I am just in awe that they can allow Margarito back after just a year suspension for what he did. This isn't the first time he's been accused of this, however it is the first time he has been caught. Luis Resto went to prison and got banned for life for what he did. Margarito basically did the same, but he got caught before he could get in the ring and almost/kill someone. This scumbag does this and then gets a title shot with the best P4P boxer around the world, what a disgrace.

Mia,

I have navigated that river perfectly for a while.

In terms of comparing fastpitch to football there is no comparison for several reasons. Football is the greatest game, in my opinion, and no game compares. In terms of High School it plays on a Friday night, there are fifty kids on each team, there are school activities connected to it (proms dances), it is an American Pastime and communities rally around it. No comparison. So you won't get an argument out of me there.

However, when you bring up ESPN please do not try to tell me that they do not dictate which sports and teams are important. For example, do you think UCONN would get anywhere near the coverage that they get if ESPN wasn't based in Bristol Conneticut. Sure they are an excellent basketball team, but they dominated the presses, sports center, espn radio,... during march madness, while NC was clearly the better team with the better story.

A more interesting thing that I noticed last year during the college world series was, although softball was getting good numbers, there were no highlights being shown on sportscenter and there was zero advertising or hype surrounding it. All of the audience watched it organically. Imagine what a little hype would do. Knowing some of the personallities and athletes at that level, there were a lot of personal stories and hooks that could have been used, but the decision makers weren't interested enough in it, therefore they determined which sport was more important at that particular time, despite the numbers.

I don't think softball people are looking for "Superfastpitch Sunday" with a national Holiday, but the fact is this, fastpitch is the only unique women's team sport that women can claim ownership of making it TV worthy and in my humble opinion they should give credit where credit is due. I also feel that that applies on a local level as well. And I think this applies whether the current local players are the greatest ever or the best we have right now.

Nice job with the stats…but you missed my point! You were originally claiming that the media determines which sports are relevant based on their coverage.

“On all levels it is the media that determines which sports are more important and it seems like your decision has been made. It is a big reason why women's sports cannot get ahead, you listen to sports talk shows and when the subject comes up, it the commentators that poo-poo the female sports.”

I’m not saying that softball and women’s sports haven’t come a long way in the past ten years, but it will never get the audience of men’s sports. If the Championship game is being played then the numbers might get respectable, but it’s June and what else is there to watch? Last year MLB sold more tickets to games than any other year in its history. Count the number of people at the next high school football game and compare that to softball games. That’s not the media or talk radio’s fault, it’s just a fact. If that’s being a bigot then I guess the executives at all the networks and ESPN are guilty too. Those numbers are cute and I’m sure ESPN will continue to cover Women’s Softball, but at the end of the day they would shut it off it a second to cover Tim Tebow and Peyton Manning playing in Alaska. That’s not bigotry that’s business!

Denial is a river in Egypt…

Jacques Rogge has stated that Baseball will not return to the Olympics until MLB allows the top athletes to play in the Olympics.

From Bob Costas interview with Rogge:

" Rogge gave a very solid response as to why softball was dropped. Rogge stated that the ISF (governing body of International Softball) had not done a very good job of differentiating to the IOC Board that softball was not the female version of baseball. Rogge inferred that this was critical due to the positive testing that had been rampant in MLB (sorry PGP!). Rogge also stated that many countries had one Federation that encompassed both sports and this was another reason the IOC Board Members had for removing both sports from the Olympics; the feeling being (I assume) these 2 sports were "joined at the hip".

Rogge went on to say that the ISF was now hard at work in correcting the misconception and that that organization was also introducing and assisting with numerous softball programmes throughout the world.

When pressed by Costas, about whether Rogge supported softball's inclusion in the 2016 Olympics, Rogge stated he had to remain neutral and that the voting members of the IOC would make that determination."

SO - basically - because MLB won't let the best players play, and the MLB Players Union doesn't want drug testing Softball has been thrown out of the Olympics. Hopefully the IOC will correct this huge mistake later this year.

Mia Hamm,

I had no idea how little you know.

Ok here's your research:

According to the NCAA's website:

The Women's College World Series has jumped from three games being covered in 1999 to every game being broadcast live from 2003 - 2008. The WCWS final has outrated every Major League Baseball game on ESPN or ESPN2 on Memorial Day the last three years.

Women's softball never has had a positive test for drug use in the Olympics or World Championships.

From the ESPN website:

An estimated 1.676 million households tuned in to watch Arizona win its eighth national title by beating Tennessee 5-0 on June 6, 2007. The ESPN2 telecast received a 1.8 rating, tying it with the rating for Game 3 of the 2005 championship series between UCLA and Michigan. About 1.644 million households tuned in for that game, which was won by Michigan.

This year's three-game championship series averaged 1.363 million households and a 1.5 rating, making it the most-viewed and highest-rated championship final ever for the networks.

Thats a lot of moms, dads, little girls and wives.

The series also set an attendance record for the fourth straight year, drawing 62,463 fans to break last year's mark of 46,122.

By the way, Mia, that is really a good idea to change the game to be more like baseball. Since baseball has the most declining numbers in American sports and softball has the highest incline in participation in the last five years. According to the NCAA website, the costly nature of the space that baseball takes up is the reason for the Olympics to get rid of baseball and softball. (throwing out the baby with the bath-water) The sooner the IOC recognizes the fact that softball is growing internationally and is fundamentally different than baseball, the sooner it will get back in the Olympics.

Bigotry is a disease.

Apache Joe,

I intentionally put football in the mix because it was in the offseason. The fact that you can give football 9 times the coverage in the offseason over a sport that was in season says something. I am not sure exactly what it says, because I am not calling for less football coverage. It more leans to the idea of trying harder with the current sports.

Ummm? The media determines which sports are important. I think you need to do some research regarding how much money baseball and football bring to a school district before you go and make a statement like that. I agree there needs to be some coverage of all sports, but don’t confuse the media’s coverage of sports based on their agenda. The media is in the business of selling papers and gaining viewership for their websites. That means they write about what people want to read about. If you are unhappy with the lack of coverage of softball then make the sport more interesting. You could start by pushing the pitchers mound back about 8 feet and open up the infield so it’s not like watching a baseball game played in my living room. Women’s sports has its place in our society but the bottom line is society doesn’t tune-in to women’s sports unless their little girl, girlfriend, or wife is playing. Is softball in the Olympics anymore??? Does anyone care about Hockey???

Your statistics of the football posts per thread should probably not be included. It's not in-season.

The other ones are valid though.

chkyrslf said:

Miguel,

I did some work for you:

On the current page in terms of amounts of threads per sport it breaks down like this (I did not count the ones that were not based on one sport):

10 baseball threads
9 football threads
4 basketball threads
2 track and field threads
1 softball thread

I also calculated the amount of posts per thread by sport on average for this page:

baseball - 9 posts per thread
football - 6.7 posts per thread
basketball - 1 post per thread
track and field - 2 posts per thread
softball - 27 posts per thread

(Since there was only one softball thread on this page I calculated the whole season. There has been a total of 12 softball threads this whole season averaging at 21.83 posts per thread. Baseball in a total of 26 threads has averaged 23.84 per thread and football with 18 threads has posted 18.94 per thread. The other sports do not rival these three sports even when they are in season. Soccer has its moments.)

No one would argue covering baseball and updating football info (it is clearly the best sport and the most popular), but is there any reason that you are not keeping up with softball. Perhaps it is the same reason that you continue to put up non-athletic pictures of softball players on the threads as you continue to put up glorious and athletic pictures of football and baseball. Perhaps it is the fact that your softball correspondent hates softball and treats it that way. I go to softball and baseball games and the crowds at the softball games are the same if not bigger. On all levels it is the media that determines which sports are more important and it seems like your decision has been made. It is a big reason why women's sports cannot get ahead, you listen to sports talk shows and when the subject comes up, it the commentators that poo-poo the female sports. It would be nice to get some enthusiasm behind the coverage. Last year I suggested getting a woman to cover the women's sports, but apparently you went with the same ol' same ol'...

I would like to suggest for people to watch a lot of the college softball that is currently playing on cable tv and follow it to the College Women's World Series. It is really fun to watch and it gets great ratings. For the last several years it has had numbers that rivaled the Men's College World Series with much less advertising and it has beaten the NHL's ratings as well.

Could you address this for me Miguel?

I would say an interview with Tip or the Duarte AD would be a hot topic right now - the public has Duarte beneath both axles of the bus as far as next season. Can it possibly be as bad as these posters are saying??

There is alot going on, and it is early. You sure you guys at PSN have enough bodies and keyboards to cover when it gets even more hectic in late spring??

Us football animals are going to need regular feeding.

From what I hear, plenty of kids from TC, Monrovia and San Gabriel got Sparq'ed at the Nike combine at LA S West College. My buddy from Cathedral was there and said attendance and participation was high... and Nike was expecting the same at Long Beach

He said a couple SGV kids lite up the 40 and recorded some very respectable vertical leaps....but had no names to share. So far I have not seen the results released yet - does anyone know who shined??

As a former Pasadena area coach in football and track, I was saddened to hear of the passing of Art Large, former track coach( legend) at Pasadena HS.

Art was a great coach and sent many athletes to national stature both on the high school and collegiate and Olympic level.

Oddly, the Star- News did not write a single article related to this legend. Another colleague told me about his passing and I read the obituary in the Star-News.

Miguel, you need to right this wrong.
