Baseball Postgame: Jordan Calloway comes up big, leads Maranatha to semifinals with 4-0 win over Campbell Hall; Pasadena Poly loses to Rosamond, 6-3.

I don't know about you but I thought we had some really good weather today. It was almost as if the game started at 7 p.m. with no sun. Regardless, the Minutemen got the win. They were led by Dylan Covey on the mound. He struck out 11 and went the distance to pick up the victory. Senior Jordan Calloway had a big day, going 2-for-3 with a double in the fourth that scored two runs and an RBI single in the sixth that padded the lead. We'll find out soon if Maranatha plays at Paraclete on Tuesday or at home vs. Tahquitz. I know, you're wondering: What's a Tahquitz. Well, Tahquiz from what I understand is a fairly new school. They're 3-years-old and their coach is good friends with Brian DeHaan.Tahquiz is in Hemet and they play in the Mountain Pass League where they finished second. Their mascot is the Titans. Time to write my story. Unlike Calloway's visiting relatives from Colorado, I have to get my Lakers on...

Neat blog layout! Very easy on the eyes.. i like the colors you picked out
This is the best blog I've ever seen in my life! I really appreciate you taking the time out of your busy day to share your this with everyone.
Great blog, I will add this blog to my favorites.
all these insults and comments are just sick. D2 is so far from dylan, its almost funny to hear that. the fact is both of these kids are great ball players. each side could make a legitimate arguement for which player is better, but if your going to make an arguement, least get things straight. natha's league was pretty solid, with a solid cc downey team, and paraclete who knocked off monrovia last year. weak? debateable. Azusa the toughest opponent? not even close
Whether or whether not covey has seen good competition in high school doesnt matter. he doesnt choke like arcadia did in game one of CIF. ANd you cant judge a pitcher based on their record. Im not calling covey a dan haren but dan haren is 4-4 this year. Just an average pitcher right? no. he has a 2.5 era in the majors, thats disgusting. COvey is a good pitcher so arcadia people just accept that your coveted bryce isnt the best player ever to play the game. and stop making excuses. its really annoying
That post wasn't directed towards those using facts. Calling a kid a D-2 player at best is an insult to his talent. That is bashing IMO.
As much as everyone likes to dispute what a division a player plays in HS it does not necessarily an indication on how well a player will do after school. Covey has no control of who he faces during the HS season. Are the teams he faced as good Arcadia faced? No. that is a fact. There is no disputing that. He did what he should have done to the hitters he faced. Did he have a bad outing, yes? Doesn't everyone from time to time? He pitched 61 inning with 114 K and only 27 hits. Not too bad of a year. Let take HS out of the equation...Here are some facts..Covey is committed to San Diego while he had multiple offers from colleges before his Jr year.(Are these colleges wrong?)Covey is projected to be a top draft pick next year(scouts wrong?). Covey throws 92-94 and topped at 97. He is enjoying being a part of his HS team. Has it hurt Covey playing at a smaller school in Maranatha?
I'm not badmouthing Covey. The point is that Covey had 2 losses against inferior competition compared to what Rutherford had to face. And is his first 5 games. Switch roles and Rutherford could have gone undefeated and Covey could have had at least 5 losses. There is a huge difference between Division 2 and the noneleague games Arcadia played and the bottom of the barrel Maranatha is playing. Not badmouthing anyone just stating facts. Maranatha is playing the schedule it was dealt and doing farely well. But they hardly dominated in a weak division. They barely won their own league.
Everything I've heard is that Covey is a good kid, well-mannered and dedicated in his approach to the game. Give him a break. It's not his fault Maranatha doesn't play anyone good, and when he has played great teams/prospects, etc. he has performed at an exceptionally high level.
This reminds me of the Golper situation. When they play someone good, no one says a word, but when they play a poor team, they get bashed? Come on now. We're all adults here. Grow up and give the kid some credit.
Bashing on the Maranatha scheduling is one thing, its another to bash on a kid in HS. Grow up everyone.
Mr. S it's because Maranatha never plays anybody good pure and simple. You can spin it that other schools don't want to play Maranatha but it's probably more Maranatha just wanting to stay in their little comfort zone and play against powerhouses like Rio Hondo Prep. Nothing wrong with staying in the comfort zone but when you want to pound your chest and act like one of the big boys in division 2 you can't be a team that belongs in division 7.
Dylan Covey has already committed to the University of San Diego. He was sought after just about every major program in the country. Perfect Game has Dylan Covey ranked as the #3 prospect in the country for 2010 class. Dylan has faced many of the top hitters in country over the past two years playing in some of the top tournaments and showcases. Dylan is also a hardworking and humble kid so I am not sure where the negative comments are coming from.
Covey has already verbally committed to the University of San Diego and turned down verbal offers from USC and UCLA among others. UCLA's head coach was a games last year so you should slow down with the kid bashing. Crawl back into your hole until you get a clue!
Who does Rutherford play for in the summer?
It’s always the same
Maranatha Success equals Maranatha Bashing
It’s happened time and time again. When any Maranatha team goes deep into the playoffs it’s always they don’t play anyone, their league is weak and so on. Give me a break!

Covey will be a JC or division 2 or 3 player at best on the next level. At least he'll have pitched on the championship level against schools with 15 kids. Congrats.
So Rutherford doesn't play travel ball? That's news. Your little example still doesn't have anything to do with the weak competition Covey plays against in high school. If Azusa is indeed the best he's pitched against, there are T-ball teams that are better.
The Whole Truth-
You are completely wrong in saying that Bryce has faced tougher competition. If you are referring to the regular season then maybe you are right. Overall though you are wrong. SGV Baseball if you are watching this. Tell "The Whole Truth" about Dylan's pitching performance last fall in Jupiter Florida against the Kansas City Royals Scout team. I'm quite certain that that is a level of competitioin that Bryce has never pitched against.
If I remember correctly, Dylan pitched a 1 hit shutout, striking out 17 batters. So you can't say that Dylan has not faced one team the caliber of Bryce.
I just gave you one that goes way beyond what Bryce has faced.
The fact that Azusa is usually the biggest game on Maranatha's schedule every year shows the need to step up and play at least one good team a season. Their retreats are probably tougher than any game they play.
Covey hasn't faced one team the caliber of what Rutherford has faced. Ever. Last year Rutherford outpitched Noe Ramirez (remember him?) although he lost a tight game. Covey didn't look so hot in the finals last year and may very well have to face the same team again this year. Think about it, it took Covey 5 games to lose to. Rutherford's 2nd loss came on the last game. And that's if he was the losing pitcher. Chances are Covey will have 3 losses come Saturday because that San Jacinto team had him figured out. Covey is like Rasmussen, a nice lower level pitcher.
Covey has pitched well in many CIF games in his career where as rutherford and arcadia goes 1 and done. Chokers
So if Maranatha wins in the semis and loses to San Jacinto again can we say the same about Covey not being able to perform on the big stage again?
They were full of seniors who couldnt perform on the big stage.
Yep:
Yep.
Yep:
Yep.
Now now Apache lovers, this season Bryce was nowhere near the dominant pitcher he was as a junior. He deserved POY for Pacific League last season but this year he's got serious competition from other players on his team as well as players throughout the league. He just doesn't have the best numbers this year....
So the real problem is the pacific league is full of kids who cant perform on the big stage. They choke when it counts
realist, I agree with what you are saying about the pacific league needing to move divisions, but this year i think if Arcadia and Burroughs were playing the way they could and can play they could have gone far and might have been able to win it. Burroughs lost to chino hills in extra innings in the first round of cif(Chino Hills is now in the Semi finals of CIF) and arcadia was much better then santa barbra. They just didnt step up.
Lets get real
What a perfect handle for someone that lives in his own Fantasy World of wishes and daydreams! Nothing you say makes any sense and has no relevance but don't go away mad..just go away.
Player of the year is not just for playoffs it is for the entire season. Covey was 3-2 in his first 5 starts. For argument sake since Arcadia didn't put their last game on max preps lets give Rutherford the loss to make him 8-2 in 11 starts. His losses would be Glendora and if he got the loss against Santa Barbara. I'd put some safe money that Glendora would win Maranatha's league easily and Santa Barbara might too. Covey's losses were to Calvary Chapel and Paraclete. Rutherford's wins Gabrielino, Monrovia, Burroughs, La Salle, a La Habra team that won 17 games and was knocked out by Bishop Amat. Covey's wins, well I don't see any really good teams. It was mentioned that without Covey Maranatha wouldn't be good. Popham might disagree. But switch rolls and put Rutherford against Maranatha's schedule and other way around and Rutherford might be undefeated and Covey would have at least 3 or 4 more losses. Covey has a better fastball Rutherford is a better pitcher. Rutherford player of the year. Case closed.
Areader -
Sure, Bryce has pitched against some tough competition in division 2 which is obviously too high for Arcadia and the rest of the Pacific league.
You are right in saying that Dylan Covey no doubt is the best prospect in the area, and I'll agree that Rutherford is very good as well, but for the player of the year, you should include how they did in the playoffs and for Arcadia and most of the teams in the area, that was very short lived.
It's a little hard to compare Arcadia or any team to Maranatha if they don't play eachother. If that happens, then we will truely know. How does next year sound?? Make it happen and then we'll talk about it.
I think you better come out to see some of the teams MHS is playing before you call them "very weak". You are right that Covey did not have the break out year that he could have. He was not even the best pitcher on his team. Cory Popham's numbers were better. I appreciate your well wishes for Maranatha but lets let the boys decide things on the field. The big problem is just about every team in the area will not schedule Maranatha. Until that changes, we will only have opinions.
Big Baseball Fanatic -
Just don't talk anymore ok? You obviously don't know your stuff. If the Rio teams would roll over Maranatha, as you say, why not make it happen? I would be extatic to see MHS play any Rio team on any day. Talk to the coach for the team you follow. Make it happen. I would be willing to bet that after next year, you will see Maranatha move to Division 4 and the Rio Hondo League move back down to 5 where they actually have a chance to advance in the playoffs.
hey miguel!!!
when are you going to put the all area teams on?
just wondering
MHS supporter
The RHL has already won a D5 Championship with the Wildcats and is one of the best Leagues in the area.
Maranatha is playing in what's left of a weak Division that most RHL teams would easily roll right thru and past.
If it wasn't for Covey MHS would not even win their own League!
Miguel, Covey no doubt is the best prospect...but for the player of the year award Rutherford was the best pitcher this year in the area on the best team in the area. Yes, Maranatha is going deep into playoffs, but why shouldnt they? They r playing very weak teams. Covey should be facing better competition and he didnt have the break out year that he should have. Until then he shouldnt be player of the year. Rutherford should get it this year without any doubt, he pitched in the biggest games against the best teams in the area. But goodluck to Maranatha bring home that CIF championship guys, make the sgv proud!
Too Bad -
I don't think it's a shame at all that San Jacinto moved up to Division 5 as well. Hopefully they will make it to the finals and meet again. It should be a different story this year. By the way, last year was far from Dylan's fault. He only gave up 1, maybe 2 earned runs in almost 8 innings. MHS gave the game away last year. I don't know how you can ask much more from your pitcher in a championship game.
Go Minutemen!!
The USD coach was there at the game. Dylan is committed to USD. When we talked after the game he said he said Dylan sitting 92-94. I have personally seen Dylan hit 97 in a game. In front of 100's scouts at a tournament in Jupitor he was sitting 92-95. His 1st pitch of the game was 94 and his last pitch in the 7th was 94.
It's a shame that one of the teams that moved up with Maranatha is the same team that beat them last year and has won 2 titles in a row. Hopefully Covey has a little more this year because San Jacinto was able to hit him.
cheddar? -
You sound like one of those sore loser Rio Hondo league fans.
For your information, USD's pitching coach was there with a gun and officially clocked Dylan in the mid 90's. Mark my words, this kid will go far beyond Rasmussen and should do at least as well as Tucker in his future. Also, if the rest of the team besides Dylan is very average then where does that put the rest of the teams in the area who are no longer playing???
Big Baseball Fanatic -
If any of the 6 teams you are talking about that moved from D5 to D4 are from the the Rio Hondo league then you have lost credability. I can think of one team that is solid - Bishop Amat. Can you name any others?
Blowing cheddar? I was at the game yesterday and Covey is a talented player who was throwing 86-88. Topped out at 90. Big difference from 92-95. Seen alot of games over the years and only Tucker has been 91-92 consistently. Rasmussen and Mckiernan 89-91. Doesnt mean Dylan isnt a great pitcher, but if he was throwin 95 mph Campell Hall wouldnt have put the ball in play. Good lookin kid with a bright future, like to see what he does during the summer. Rest of the team besides right fielder very average. 2nd and short looked solid too. Catcher awful. Good luck next round.
As much as I'd say Covey is right up there, I think Rutherford may have still been the most consistent pitcher in the area. And he pitched against some stiffer competition.
As good a year that Covey is having Maranatha is still in a Division that had 6 of the best Teams moved up and out which lowered the overall quality of Teams he has had to face. I think this will hurt his chances a little when the Voting starts.
Dylan Covey was at 92-95 yesterday. HE was throwing some serious cheddar yesterday. The Taquitz coach is the previous Mountain View head coach.
Miguel, if Covey isn't the player of the year, please share with me what you're drinking. He's the best baseball prospect on the team going the furthest. But something tells me your Rio Hondo love affair will go with someone else.
Congrates to MHS. Good luck, hope you take it all.
And then there was one. Looks kinda like last year.
Hopefully the difference will be finishing with a win in the finals!! 2 more to go to get it done. Jackie Robinson will be Rockin one more time in 2009!!!
Go Minutemen!!
MM
I just got a text. Tahquitz won 7-2. We play at home Tues - 3:15
