BREAKING NEWS: La Salle's Agajanian suspended

| | Comments (30) |

La Salle baseball coach Harry Agajanian has been suspended for the rest of the season for what La Salle High is calling a violation of school policy.

"Coach Harry (Agajanian) is suspended as head coach of La Salle's varsity baseball team until further notice for violation of school policy," La Salle athletic director John Matheus said.

"Unfortunately, the administration just felt that we had to take action and we will discuss it further at the end of the season regarding next year."

Without going into all the details, school officials can confirm that Agajanian's suspension stems from a players refusal not to play in a game against Cantwell Sacred Heart. Agajanian sent that player to the bus after his refusal to play, and words were later exchanged. School officials met, and felt a suspension was warranted.

La Salle has two games left beginning today at home vs. Bishop Amat. They finish Friday at Bishop Amat. Assistant coach Junior Montes will take over as coach for what's left of the rest of the season. Agajanian, who has coached the Lancers the last four seasons, could not be reached for comment. He's expected to have a meeting with the principal today to discuss his future at La Salle.

Note: Please do not leave comments detailing what unfolded or which player was involved, those comments will be removed.

I love the journalism relevancy of your blog and it does a beautiful decent job of presenting the info.

You make blogging look like a walk in the park! I've been trying to blog daily but I just cant find writing material.. you're an inspiration to me and i'm sure many others!

A large percentage of of whatever you claim happens to be supprisingly appropriate and it makes me ponder why I had not looked at this with this light before. This particular piece truly did switch the light on for me as far as this particular topic goes. But there is actually 1 issue I am not too comfortable with and while I make an effort to reconcile that with the actual core theme of the issue, let me see just what all the rest of the readers have to point out.Very well done.

Thanks for this! I’ve been searching all over the web for the facts.

I am very new to all of this ...so i am just not positive exactly how to try to to it all yet. I'll just keep working on it one day at a time :D Thanks for any help you can offer here. Che Ore Sono

The decision by La Salle officials to retain Harry Agajanian is truly disturbing. What a message we send our youth at La Salle!

Three years ago La Salle baseball players were walking the Las Vegas Strip arter 11 PM.

Two years ago the La Salle baseball team played with most of the team hung over from a drinking binge in Las Vegas again the night before a loss that cost La Salle at repeating as chammpions of the tournament.

Last year this same Coach told a parent to keep his son at home because he disagreed with the Coach's methods (duh?).

And this year, 2009, the same Coach is suspended for speaking to a La Salle baseball player in an inappropriate manner!

Seems to us this Coach has shown a consistent pattern that clearly is not good for La Salle baseball, school or the overall reputation!

Miller was good for his tenor. Agajanian will also go down as a good coach for his turn at the helm. I supported them both. You can only do so much with a school that doesn't back you when a push comes to a shove. As long as the administration of the school allows kids and parent to shove them around (at any school) athletics will suffer. LS needs to grow some balls and not back down to parents and kids that whine every time things don't go their way. I hope Agajanian doesn't give in to this ridiculous behavior.

I like Agajanian, but come on, he had nothing to do with the field improvements. Im pretty sure a lot of money came in and that is how the improvements were made, the only reason the field was as nice as it was, was due to Miller taking care of it. I agree though the kid should be fired not the coach.

King
What decade are you in. When Miller had the team the field was horrible, the team had no dugouts and they were in a horrible league with no competition. Coach Aggie has built up the program. It hasn't struggled, they are just playing better teams. For a kid to ruin the end of a season for a team because he doesn't want to play deserves to be suspended not the Coach. La Salle might not be a powerhouse on the field, but they are mighty poor when it comes to placing blame. Toss the kid, Not the Coach.

Why was the baseball coach suspended. I have heard that another coach at LS did the same thing not once but twice and nothing happened. Kicking a kid off a bus is cowardly for the coach. Coach Ag is a good man and I don't know what happened. I hope this attitude is not becomming prevalent at LS.

I know Coach Agajanian he is a good guy, but to say he asked to be in Bishop Amat's league, does not sound right to me. I dont think anyone wants to be there. Although Coach Agajanian is a good guy, I think King is referring to the championship Miller won and the CIF Finalist he took them to his second to last year. Sure there league was a cream puff, but Miller must have been doing something right to go all that way in the playoffs. I just think something shady went down when Miller got fired, unless he resigned or something. I feel a coach of his caliber should not have been let go. I do think Coach Agajanian was a good pick up, just sounds like the administration is letting some kid scare them into getting rid of a great coach.

King. Exactly when was LS a "powerhouse" in the wsgv? Are you referring to when they were in the Santa Fe League where the now LS Freshmen can dominate? Agajanian wanted a tougher league when he signed up and he got the Del Rey League. Not a good request but thats what he gets. In the last two years, of the local schools, LS has topped Monrovia, Arcadia, Hoover, Alhambra, Duarte, South Pas (twice)and a host of out of towners. La Salle is in the toughest league in division IV baseball and every game they play is close. There is no doubt that Agajanian will succeed if he can eliminate the soft players.

sounds like prelude to a "new direction".

So a player refuses to play and the coach gets suspended? I don't care what the coach allegedly said, if a kid doesn't want to play that kid should be suspended not the coach. Just my opinion.

King said:

I knew he was still at the school teaching, but I feel like a person of that quality and character should still be involved with the baseball program. I agree that it sounds more like a team violation. What gives the kid the right to say when they want to play, but then again what gives the coach the right to exchange words with him about it?

goteamgo said:

Brian Miller is still at La Salle as head of the science department - just not coaching.

Was the player suspended from the team also? Refusing to play when a coach tells you to go in sounds like a team violation. I am sure the "words were later exchanged" part is why the coach is suspended.

Looks like there will be a few area coaching positions open after this season.

King said:

The LS baseball program has gone downhill ever since they got rid of Brian "Skip" Miller and his entire coaching staff. LS was once a powerhouse for baseball in the WSGV, but ever since they went in a "new" direction that program has struggled. Time to bring back Miller and let him rebuild that program.
