Dodgers' Manny Ramirez tests positive for performance-enhancing drugs, suspended 50 games starting tonight
Well, so much for the feel good story that is the Dodgers winning its first 13 home games this season, a new Major League record. The buzz now will surround good 'ol Manny Ramirez who was suspended 50 games for violation of MLB Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program, The Times' Bill Shakin and Dylan Hernandez reports.
The suspension will cost Ramirez $7.7 million, or roughly 31% of his $25-million salary. Players in violation of baseball's drug policy are not paid during suspensions.
The Times first reported this early this morning.
Ramirez is expected to attribute the test results to medication received from a doctor for a personal medical issue, according to a source familiar with matter but not authorized to speak publicly.
The Dodgers informed triple-A outfielder Xavier Paul this morning that he was being promoted to Los Angeles.
With the suspension taking effect with tonight's game against the Washington Nationals at Dodger Stadium, Ramirez will not be eligible to return to the team until July 3.
Ramirez would become the biggest star suspended under an oft-criticized major league testing program that started in 2003. He had been a model citizen since arriving in Los Angeles last August, following a stormy tenure with the Boston Red Sox.
This is the second drug scandal to rock baseball within four months. In a year in which baseball officials hoped their greatest concern would be the slumping economy, the two highest-paid players in the game have been revealed to have failed a drug test.
Alex Rodriguez, the game's highest-paid player, acknowledged during a February news conference that he used steroids from 2001 to 2003. The admission followed a Sports Illustrated report that he failed a drug test in 2003, when players were not subject to suspension.

Where is the outrage that was shown to others for being on the juice? I guess if you like the guy it is OK. Bottom line Manny is 37 years old with pressure to perform like someone 27 and he used drugs. He got caught so let him serve his 50 games and move on. Great research King.
He was infact using a sexual enhancer as you might have called it. But what he used was a female hormone called HGC. Basically due to the fact that he had been taking steroids his body shut down the testosterone making process. HGC is commonly used by females who are attempting to become pregnant. Because his body was shutting down this process and to some how hide the steroids he turned to this.

okay guys, heres the facts. i dont know if you've done your research but from what ive heard it was not performance enhancing drugs or marijuana. the word is that manny was using sexual enhancers (yes you read it right). apparently he was prescribed by his doctor, in order to spice up his love life. the reason he got in trouble was that this boosted testosterone production and was on the "no-no" list of the mlb.
im not saying he shouldnt be suspended. he should have known/checked to make sure he was clear. however, people are making this much bigger of a deal than it should be

It's sort of frsutrating when you have to explain to your kids why their favorite player won't be playing. I wish they would just out everyone who has been juicing and get the damn thing over with.

I'm sorry Mister Dodger Hater, but the Dodgers will do fine with or without Manny on their roster for the next 50 games. Unlike last season, Manny hasn't been carrying them on his shoulders, they've been shining on their own. With players like Ethier and Hudson, to name a few, they'll be fine if they keep up the momentum as they have so far.
Besides, Manny didnt start with the Dodgers last season until July, which is when he's planned to return.
This will be a great season, and I can't wait to have the last laugh when we win the pennant.
