Star-Jibber: ..... All football, all the time .....
The last football thread we posted had over 100 comments. For the record, I've put in numerous calls to San Gabriel, La Salle and Pasadena. Got a call back from Pasadena but by the time I heard it I was on to my next story (remember the spring playoffs?). As spring sports wind down tell us what's going on at spring practices. I pose you this question: Who is the best QB returning this fall? I'm thinking of a kid whose last name starts with a V and ends with a Z ....

Great wordpress blog here.. It's hard to find quality writing like yours these days. I really appreciate people like you! take care and see you soon

"By October....most of your line is going both ways and special teams are laced with starters...and you begin to cannibalize the JV roster, and find yourself scouring the hallways and badminton courts for somebody who at least knows how to play Madden"
I believe this happens year in year out at Mark Keppel...sad but true.
4 straight posts - obviously it is 50/50 on me surviving until Sept.
The Stang Fan mentioned something so obvious - you tend to forget about how true it is. That is the attrition rate - or body count, come summer heat, Hell Week and contact...the 80 kids coaches are boasting about in late April....drops to 62, then below 50 and suddenly you use that beautiful depth chart sheet for a snot rag.

At the pregame meal you ask - does anybody here know how to long snap??
Maybe this year will be different.
Heard TC has 85 plus at spring football. That’s a nice turn-out. Also heard they have one coach for every player…haha.
Also heard Backus is at Arcadia, haven’t confirmed it but word is he's on the staff, not sure at what capacity. Should be an interesting Brawl for the Mall with RB on the Apache sideline.

DOES ANYBODY HAVE A THURSDAY NIGHT GAME??
MIQUEL
100 posts??
Maybe time to feed some spring reports...animals are getting restless....how many kids in cleats at PHS?
How good is So Pas? Is La Salle going to return to groundpound? If SM's schedule is soft again - they just might go 8-0 again to start.
I think alhambra will be stronger this year than last.
Stang Fan,
Rocky Jr shoots very decent hoop as well for LC.
BTW, you asked about week zero...confirmed at the mandatory parent meeting last night...we scrimmage ElMO the afternoon of the 1st day of school...(maybe a Thurs)and open 9/11 at Arroyo.
You need sparklers?? Roman Candle, Pinwheels?? See GA in the TC fireworks booth....gotta support the boys!
Stangs still have the same first 3 opponents? I was curious how Glendale would be in 09...also wonder if Valdes or Loya might be on the hire list over there.
I miss Loya...he was a rare dude and loved to talk football.
Found this yesterday...can't wait to see what Bingo does on Saturdays the next few years! The video is a little long, but pretty damn good. The bad-punt-snap-turned-run at the 5:44 mark is ridiculous:

goteamgo,
That's right, I completely forgot about that. I know the SGV hasn't seen what he has done, but any QB tutored by Clarkson has to be at least mentioned.
GA,
The name Rocky Moore rings loud and clear at Muir, as Rocky Sr. led the Stangs to two CIF hoop titles in the mid-90's. I wish his son much success!
What's the news on Maranatha's new QB? The one and done, third high school in three years guy?
Apologies...I meant to say had Thropay stayed in Monrovia, not TG.
TC has only 4 home games....4 homers out of 10 games.
There goes the hot dog concession.
The Rams open at Arroyo, who are loaded and Coach Sinsinger must be drooling at the thought of payback and surgically hacking the heart out of TC to start the season. Immediate and heavy gut check.
We then get the Moors at home, then travel to Arcadia and Rosemead. That 1st four games should loosen the jocks of the TC squad.
Expect to see more sophs than you have have EVER seen under the TC lights.
You know what else really pis@#(* me off about Thropay....is remember he is a kid. He can't be having any fun...at this stage in his life. He has not thrown a pinpoint TD pass and won a game for a couple years.... and had the joy of celebrating wildly with his team mates after a win. Hopefully others will take note of the Thropay winding road and learn something. Even a serious prospect like Golper - was able to "enjoy" playing under constant scout scrutiny and high expectations across the board. No doubt his presence in the Apache lineup positively impacted players around him. Had he stayed in M-town - his stat sheet would be in recruiters notebooks right now.
Back to QB's, Valdez probably holds the top spot. He really throws the slant / short post with killer timing and has been doing so for awhile. SG has a slew of formations/motions and weirdness in their offense - and IV handles all of it well.
Unmentioned in the RHL is Rocky Moore from LC, likely to have a great year in 09. Beware Bednarski with an offensive line.
TC totally shut down Bueno last season, I believe he completed two passes and one was to a guy with horns on his helmet. Conora was assigned iso coverage on Bueno's scrambling and that was minimal as well. However, Bueno's stats speak to his overall game - and right now he has got to be noted as tops in the RHL. I've seen some great film on him, including that long run against the Mead. He is going to find the endzone with regularity come Sept.
Seems like a stretch to say anything about Tropay, considering he has not played a game in 2 years, due to being ineligible due to his family moves.

"Give that line a lot of credit, this kid could have written a check to the opposing team with all the time he had in the pocket"
lol!
JF Matador: That Youtube video does give me second thoughts and after looking at this kids stats as a sophomore It gives him twice the credit I would have given him without seeing him play. Miguel you picked a good candidate for potential pre-season QB. Give that line a lot of credit, this kid could have written a check to the opposing team with all the time he had in the pocket. Arcadia QB Garrett Tuck needs to gain a hell of a lot of confidence in order to tap into the top 5 West SGV QB's, with the line he had in front of him last season you would have thought he would put up much greater numbers but he sort of folds under pressure of a quick defense. This could be Nick Bueno's prove me year, He could be the opposing threat to the defenses that he'll be facing this year. If his heart remains as big as it has been, he is going be a monster to stop, I like a QB that keeps the ball in his offenses hands. In addition to having good QB's you must have good catch and run receivers, it looked like SG had plenty of them. Monrovia will have to provide Nick with a few good break away receivers and that would balance out his run game. I don't recall seeing any other returning QB's from the RHL that stand out this year enough to write home about except the kid from South Pasadena, Conor Bednarski Excellent passer.
both Valdez and Bueno are outstanding QB's but in my opinion Chris llamas reads the defense better then both Val and bueno but the athletism, hands down goes to Valdez.

The Stang Fan,
I agree. Williams and Tuck are going to have great years. Tuck has good size, a decent arm, and good accuracy. If he gets going in the first quarter, he plays with confidence the rest of the game. Hopefully with a year under his belt, it won't matter how the first couple plays go, he will have that confidence regardless. Look for him to have a good year.
ObservantCat:
Valdez hands down. not only is he a great QB/Leader. He is also an outstanding athlete. why not let him do what he does best which is be an athlete. SG's offense puts the ball in the hands of their playmakers. Thats what you do if you want to be successful on Offense isnt it? Believe me i've watched this kid for years now it doesnt matter if Valdez is undercenter/shotgun/pistol the results would be the same.
The Pacific League will boast a quite few returning QB's this year. Arcadia, Muir, either Burroughs or Burbank (can't remember which), PHS, Glendale, and Hoover, all had underclassmen taking a majority of the snaps last year. None of these guys are "prototypical" QB's, but they all have a year under their belt and learned what it takes to lead their teams.
Of the kids returning in the PL I think that Jarron Williams (Muir) and Garrett Tuck (Arcadia)will have really good years. Jarron doesn't possess the rocket arm of Rettig or the blazing speed of Bingo, but he reads defenses well, makes the smart throw, stays steady in the pocket, and has the ability to scramble when his protection breaks down and/or his WR's are covered. What limits him however, is that he is depended on tremendously on the defensive side of the ball, where he is actually better suited....but hey, as much as I hate the QB going both ways, many guys have done it before and many will do it after. As far as Tuck, it's hard for me to use last year's Muir/Arcadia game as a barometer for how I think he'll fare this season. He, and his team for that matter, really struggled that game and I walked away unimpressed. However, with that year under his belt and with the confidence he gained in himself this baseball season, I can see Tuck doing some really good things, especially in our league. I doubt that he will big mistakes like forcing the ball into triple coverage, as he did against Muir last year.
Dead horse beating in 3...2...1...I know it is OLD, tired, rehashed, spilled-milk news, but let us not forget two guys who should have been great WSGV QB's this year: Josiah Thropay and Dennis Rufus, both of Charter Oak.
keep an eye out for the duo of Darian and Crockom this year @ Alhambra. the two have been together since frosh. and have a good sense for each other out on the gridiron. they will be seniors next year. and i am sure they will be very productive. good luck moors!!
Miguel:
Issac's numbers are great, but to be the best in the San Gabriel Valley you must have at least a 500. win lose record. His individual stats are phenomenal but his team had an overall losing record. I just think that in order to classify one as the best you must lead your team to the best or at least close to the best record. ? who would you choose as your QB if you had the choice of Chase Retig or Issac Valdez? and could place them on any team you wanted in the West San Gabriel Valley? I take nothing away from the Kid I just think San Gabriel's entire offensive strategy is geared toward the pass or QB keep plays. I would like to check out one of his games though to get a realistic sense of his skills.
I'm going with last names here.... starts with a V and ends with a Z .. Nick Bueno would be starts with a B ends with an O .... Nick Bueno is good, really good. But I think my boy V-Z has the numbers to support him being the best returning QB in the WSGV.
Miguel: You mean starting with N and ending with B?.... Or at least by seasons end you may make the switch.
