............... Star-Jibber, Special Editon ...............

| | Comments (81) |

This Star-Jibber is a Special Edition. Usually we let you talk about anything and everything you want, but I'm posting this for my football freaks who can't wait for spring sports to be over and done with so I can devote more coverage to football.

As you all know I'm pretty busy with two teams in the finals, putting together an all-star softball game as well as compiling all-area teams. Yes, it's been a busy few weeks. I've gone from keeping my head above water to throwing on some goggles and swimming through it all.

Someone on my "Top 5 QB's Returning" thread said I should stop my man crush with Keith Jones and asked what I was smoking by picking Isaac Valdez as the WSGV's top QB. I stick by my choice and you'll see Valdez won't let me down. Someone also questioned my credentials. I'll let my bio at the left speak for itself. Thanks for hating!

Also, someone wanted a top 5 list of overall football players returning, and, yes, Dietrich Riley undoubtedly tops that list. If I had to pick a team with the best returning line it's gotta be Temple City. Care to chime in?

good point and I've heard nothing about who was participating from TC. I had heard Josh O and possibly Conora..(leading tackler in the RHL)but that was just the word floating around...not confirmed

maybe if it was an invite thing the fact that RB was not in house could have played a role?? Who knows....

If anyone can find an accurate roster or knows basically who is practicing at the Mead...please post!

Incorrect said:

Hall of fame practice began yesterday at Rosemead High School, and the kids and coaches seemed pretty fired up! The West doesn't look to big, but man they can move on the defensive side! I'm sure that at this time the defense is typically ahead of the offense, because they can just react and fly to the ball. I was surprised that i did not see any temple city kids out there! One of the kids had told me that Josh Ouelette (sp.) was suppose to play! Monrovia was represented as well as a lock down corner from Muir! The O-line was not bad either! Practice begins around 6pm, if you can stop by i would suggest it, it helps get that football fix we are all dying for!

Can you enlighten us with those equal numbers
that your comparing to Valdez and Cazzarin?

Oiler1992,

"The best qb is not Issac Valdez or DARRIAN CAZZARIN,
its the kid from Keppel"?
Honestly bro I highly doubt a true Oiler fan would not be voting for a Keppel kid. I'm wondering why the big highlighted letter's DARRIAN CAZZARIN?
I smell something and that something begins with the letter H!
Not taking anything away from Keppel kid he seems like a tough kid and would he start at SG or AHS? No!
Let's stick to the facts and the fact that CAZZ just
throws the ball up for grabs to the #1 Wr in the Almont
league, obviously sounds to be something much more personal you Oiler1992 guy.
It's pretty obvious "DARRIAN CAZZ" and by the way
you pretty much gave yourself away with the BIG letters, let's see;

Passing: 2209 yds

Crockom: 36 rec. 791 yds 6 tds

Gonzalez: 37 rec. 580 yds 6 tds

Peko: 23 rec. 262 yds 4 tds

Sure looks like a heck of a lot of "throw n' pray"
to me too there Mr. Oiler guy!
Miguel is totally on the money w/ the list
and I bet any money "CAZZ" throws and prays the rock
for over 3000 yds this season!

Oiler1992 said:

Im a montebello oiler fan and with that i follow the almont league and i think miguel your wrong. The best qb is not Isaac Valdez or DARRIAN CAZARIN but the kid from keppel. yes keppel. Valdez is all screens and can barely throw the ball the down field and Cazarin has the best reciever in the area and all he does is throw it up and pray Crockum comes down with it. The kid from keppel, Evan Bachmann, puts up equal numbers and with no defence no running game no line and 1 decent reciever. Props to him. And you cant say i have a biast. He is the best qb in the almont league. 2 players from keppel made all league this year. Him and edson pena. I promise you if they played at SG or Alhambra they would be gettin all the hype but they play on an 0-10 team so they get nothing. Kudos to them.

really too early to say as far as any differences, but right now there is alot to like in how things are going. A couple of the respected seniors are leading by example - and that is something that old school ancients like me love to see. I am not talking about some RahRah dude out in front yelling meaningless BS. I think you know the kind of "step up" I am talking about.

Even not in pads, you can feel the level rising, and it feels good.

When the hunt starts, is when philosophy and related play calling comes into play. Remember a couple years back when M-town supporters were near ballistic on play calling? I recall similar in Stang country...and we had some ragging at TC as well the first 4 games. Guess we will have to see how it plays out

Duarte has shown us up the past few years in this department.

It is one hell of a heated game, and when your good friend or worse yet, your own blood, is the kid behind that double bar and horseshoe facemask...it is near impossible NOT to come out swinging when somebody tosses a cheap shot his way.

The Stang Fan,
u r right about Chou, TC fortunes or(misfortunes)depend heavily on his ability to bring together a top notch D. I believe we will field the youngest TC team in many years, and youngsters tend to freelance...the RHL champion Blair D could freelance because of a wealth of team speed...TC D cannot freelance, snooze or be indecisive, or you are talkin immediate lights out. We need a disciplined, task oriented D, anchored by a front that absorbs the bombs, stays home usually, but penetrates with bloodlust in time of need. I like what I see in Chou and our new line coaches. Clearly, Chou's credentials show he knows defensive football. Time will tell.

Apache Joe,
thanks for snagging Ramoudi's name...TC will need all they got and more to hang with him. I only saw him work twice last year, but he may have the BEST bull rush of any D lineman in the Valley. He really T's off and he squares up the blocker...you better be low or you WILL get lifted. Single block this kid at your own risk...and if you must single block him...be sure to have your back up QB taking snaps on the sideline with his mouthpiece in...

Lastly, the 7-6 M-town/TC JV war, I was there and it was a tremendous football game. Somebody had to lose...and M-town was justly emotionally devasted afterward, as the pre-cooked "undefeated" league champ celebration went silent. The game was a knock you down...but it was also a shake your hand, respect your opponent game, end to end. It was an important game for the Cats, but for TC it was redemption...Monrovia had destroyed the same group of kids (and coaches Luna and Lopez)43-0 as freshman...and they had stewed on that for 365 days. The closest thing I've seen to this level of intensity at TC - was the blood in your eye stares before the San Marino game last season...

FB Einstein,
it is probably my last.

Loudest two plays of the year last season on TC home field....1) Ruckle 77 yd TD, first play of the game, on a play that looked dead from the start....
2) J Stew hook and lateral from Gianni-Bruno Lopez against Paraclete, unreal

Goldenarm,

What are your thoughts about the new offense that TC will be running this year? To me it’s the perfect opportunity to run the old 6 power behind those big ugly’s up front with a shifty speedy back like Ruckle slashing for holes. It would be a shame to see those guys pass blocking for a QB throwing incomplete passes and go three and out. At least they will be fresh for defense. Funny how you’ve followed this line for three years. Will this be your last…?:)
I like your prediction about Backus. I hope it happens.

Apache Joe,

Spot on analysis about the Apaches. Ten years ago if you would have said that Muir would beat Arcadia by a combined score of 108-28 in consecutive games I would have bet $1000 against it. Hopefully, they rebound this year and make the playoffs again.

Money Talks,

Hoover at .500 this year? Whoa! Now THAT is a hell of a prediction. Like I said to GA about Blair...I'll believe it when I see it. Btw, if Hoover does hit .500 I'm going to go ahead and invest sleds to sell in Hell....

MoneyTalks said:

Stang Fan,

I happen to know the coaching staff at Hoover high. They have done a complete 180 from last season. they are returning a ton of kids. The kids there have already told the coaches that football means something to them now. I predict a 500 record from them. They did some passing league game already with Loyola and some other school and beat both. Even though passing league doesnt mean too much, it's a good start otherwise.

Arcadia is going to be very young but full of talent. I can see the team making errors for the first 3 games, but as the season picks up in league, they will gain steam. They have a Soph Qb that will back up Garrett that is great. He is going to have a bright future @ arcadia.

Apache Joe,

Don't forget Qunicy Williams who graduated in 2000. Another complete stud. he was a RB/FS...adrian peterson style of running. He had every pac-10 after him, then he blew out his knee and settled for Arkansas state. Then, over there, bad luck hit him again, and injured the other knee. He did rehab, played for Mt. Sac for a year, then called it quits. Too much for him. He is almost a CPA now, so he's doing extremely well. Check this, The night before he blew out his knee, the Oregon coach called him and said he was flying out the next friday to watch him play. Something like that as the story goes. It's hard to remember them all.

The Stang Fan,

Arcadia's talent is individual, but I don't see a collective unit of talent like the 2007 team (Walker, Golper, Fields, Picard, Willm, Ahmaz, etc...)or the teams of the past.

A.J. Rail is a strong safety/h-back and he is a darn good football player. Rodney Arnett the tailback is talented, but young. Taylor Lagace, so much potential, yet so young. Labib Damouni is a returning linemen (6'3 280) and he is a hoss. I don't see the overall talent level growing. Their are individual good players but as a unit, I'm at a wait and see right now with this upcoming team. The freshman class (2012 class) has potential, but no outright, complete stud like an Auddarrius Bailey or Chris Handy (which are hard and few to find).

Apache Joe said:

Observantcat,

That's good to hear for the Monrovia program. Josh Lowden is going to be an absolute stud for you. Everything I hear about Deshawn Ramirez (i think that's his last name) are good things other than his academic prowess. If he can take care of it in the classroom, you guys are set for the next 3 years or so at the tailback position. It really would've been crazy to have had Smith and Williams together once again for a 2nd year. It would've been similar to the Sparks/Davis combo of 06 but with much much more power. They were very good together.

The Stang Fan said:

Clearly, folks are antsy with the season just around the corner. I've already opined on this topic before, but hey, if it gets the fans blood flowing and lets us talk more football....then I'll roll with it.

Here's a Pacific/RHL Poll:

1. Muir (Like Apache Joe said, the Stangs are a step ahead...unfortunately, the playoff matchup gods abhor them)

2. Burroughs (A DAMN good team whose early exits are as frustrating as Muir's)

3. Monrovia (Would give the top two teams damn good competition)

4. TC (Normally, I'd put Arcadia here but after seeing what Jerry Chou did for Glendale last year I gotta go with the Rams this year)

5. Arcadia (I've been predicting a rough patch over the next couple of years, but the Apache faithful are telling me otherwise...)

6. CV (They've turned the corner from those recent terrible years)

7. PHS (Talent is there and McFarland will be a good change)

8. Burbank (Muir beats them by 40 last year, yet THEY win a playoff game....damn matchup gods!)

9. SM (Good staff with decent talent)

10. LC (GA swears they'll be good this year....we'll see)

11. SP (BigFatFan swears they'll be good this year....we'll see)

12. Glendale (Back to the bottom after quality staff departs)

13. Blair ("As the Blair Vikings Turn"......GA, I'll believe the "huge line" story when I see it)

14. Hoover (Uhhhh...................nevermind)

Apache Joe: Living through the Garrison age was one of the toughest things to do as a Wildcat fan. His Conservatism caused his players to play very one dimensional. It was the hardest thing to take not going for 4th & 2-3 on your opponents side of the field and settling for a 45-50 yrd field goal. Smith was not on his game in early 2007 but as the year progressed he began to come into his own. With the prospect of him coming back, Wildcat fans were waiting in the wings for him and Williams to finish what they had started at the end of 07. 2007 was a very young Monrovia team that could have been a great team in 2008 with everyone included. I am not taking anything away from other teams but I know that Monrovia should have had a Monster of a team this year. There is an abundance of talent finding their way through and I think that I will begin to show again this season.

Apache Joe said:

Observantcat,

You guys had Dwight Smith in 2007 when Arcadia beat you guys 41-20. Troy Ahmaz outshined Smith completely. (Williams was hurt that game and did not play) Ahmaz ran for 254 yards and 2 touchdowns (with 1 55 yard TD called back) while Smith had 17 carries for 45 yards.

Arcadia would've been a decent PL team last year had depth issues not caught up with them.

Monrovia came on strong last year and would've competed in the PL, I still don't think they come close to Burroughs or Muir. More comparable to me with Burbank (with more athletes). CV is a hit or miss to me lately.

New York said:

A very dysfunctional Monrovia team (week 1 with a first-time coach, new sytem, off-season distractions, etc) was the only team to face a healthy Arcadia team. Arcadia's lack of depth killed them by the time they go into league play.

Just Muir? You are crazy. Burroughs would stomp the RHL, Arcadia who was the 5th place team smashed the RHL champs, and CV would have run all over the RHL. Come to think of it Muir probably won't even win league this year. They better watch out for Arcadia, Burroughs and Crescenta Valley this year. They would all be dominant in the MidValley easily.

New York said:

Thank you, Annie. I suppose we can argue that the RHL collectively was capable of performing just as poorly in the Eastern Division as the PL teams did and probably the PL teams would have done just as well in the MidValley as did the RHL teams.

Pacific League Fan:

Bring some of your drink with you at the Arcadia/Monrovia TC/Arcadia Game. You sure seem to believe you know your teams well enough to explain an early demise of Teams in the Mid-Valley div. Over the years Monrovia has played teams in other leagues that would dominate the Pacific league from head to toe and vice verse. This should be a good year to prepare some showdowns since most of the teams are pretty much even in terms of returning starters. Don't allow for last years Arcadia game to be your ruler of success over Monrovia. Remember we were missing Brandon Golden (Jr.) Charter Oaks 1st Team Miramonte league, Leon Youngblood (Charter Oaks 1st team All Miramonte league, Josiah Thropay (Upcoming Jr. QB willing to bet he'll be All CIF, Brandon Brooks all Miramonte league 1st team Dwight Smith ( State of Texas Div. 3 Back of the year Carthage High School. Now when you can find a group of players of that magnitude coming from just one of your football teams that leave and attend another program and your team still makes it to the Semi's maybe then you can put down a league that you think you have some kind of superiority over. Just in case you don't really know what I meant by having great athletes, here is just a sample of His play in the state of Texas (http://www.hsgametime.com/dfw/videopage.html?nvid=315175&shu=1) . Now show me where in Burbank, Glendale, Crescenta Valley, Arcadia, PHS, or Burroughs you could loose this much talent in one year and even compete against Mark Keppel?.. Didn't think so. This message is not aimed at all of those who are Pacific League followers, just the RHL Haters that don't really know Football. Athlete of the Week - December 17th--Dwight Smith

Just another Clip on Dwight Smith (Has Already Signed with TCU) D1 heavily recruited at Texas, Georgia, Tennessee.
The Carthage Bulldogs are one win away from history, and one of the big reasons is running back Dwight Smith. The Dawgs football team is in the state championship for only the 2nd time in school history. The last time in 1991, Carthage did not come away victorious, so a win this weekend in Texas Stadium would make history.

Smith is perhaps the biggest offensive weapon in Texas high school football right now. The past two weeks he has run for over 530 yards and helped Carthage to big wins over Gilmer and Giddings. Now one win away from immortality, Smith is staying humble, crediting his line and coaches with his success.

But at least for this day, Smith gets the credit he deserves as the Landers Dodge Chrysler Jeep athlete of the week.

Pacific League fan,

Don't you mean Muir would run through that division? Stop bundling all of the Pacific League onto Muir's coattail. Yes, we get it, Muir is good, probably better than all of Rio Hondo League. But for all PL fans to continuously compare the two leagues is unfair, specially since the PL enrollment is twice that of the RHL(Cue the comments about how Asian kids don't play football). By the way, didn't you all get knocked out of the first round last year? Oh I'm sorry, CV made it to the second round. After Muir ran over all the teams in PL, all they can manage was a first round exit. PL couldn't run rough shod through their own division, so we'll go after the lower one. Two of our teams made it to the semi finals. So why don't we just leave it at that. You worry about your division, and we'll worry about ours. Typical PL fan, you're not happy unless someone is constantly patting you on the back.

Otherwise you will end up pitting Muir's 4x100 track squad against M-towns wrestlers...and on and on into the sunset.

The put downs on the RHL grow increasingly meaningless, especially as the league is benefitting from fresh, committed new blood in the coaching ranks and the RHL (along with Mead) just experienced a season of thumbing our nose at the ESGV, who picked us to roll over and die in CIF bracket play...but were grossly mistaken. TC and Monrovia have been shying away from playing no one, and the Rams will benefit from our week 3 match up with the Pac League's Apaches.

Can we get a conclusion? Blair seemed to be moving in a positive direction, and a change in the coaching staff at this point will have a traumatic effect, considering their schedule next year.

The Pacific League had 5 players sign D-1/D-1AA scholarships last year. 4 from Muir alone and the other to UCLA. Who from the RHL or Monrovia signed. It is a crock and a joke to say that Monrovia has far more athletes than any school in the Valley. Typical delusional RHL fan.

Save it! Stick with your fantasy league gimmicks for now. If it ever comes a day when the San Gabriel valley allows these teams to meet up then we will see, but until then I would say Monrovia Has Far More Athletes to choose from year after year than anyone in the San Gabriel Valley and thats a fact! Of course that is my Biased opinion, now If things hadn't have changed so drastically in the Pasadena area then I would put Muir and PHS way ahead of the pack... but in this day and age the rest of the Pacific league are no better than the bottom half of the Rio Hondo league.

IS PARKS OUT AT BLAIR?
RUMOR OR FACT?

Prediction:
Randy Backus will again be a head football coach, by this time next year. And no, it won't be at Temple City.

Are you kidding me, the only J.V's "M-town" has been winning League is because their in a weak league. I wanna see them come to the Pacific League playing teams like C.V, Burbank,Muir, Burroughs....They'll get killed

Any passing league games or lineman competitions coming up soon?

To Cat Fan;
You are absolutely correct about that J.V. team coming up.You know they ran the Old Power I last year all the way to there 3rd league title in a row.Probably,I mean realistically they for sure had 1 thousand yard rusher and 2 with at least 500-600 apiece.I don't think Offensive Line will be an issue for awhile at M-Town.J.V. is J.V.though looking forward to see how these kids mature as Football players with quality Varsity coaching.

The Maranatha QB is old news - see blog of 3/16/09 for info:

http://www.insidesocal.com/paspreps/2009/03/football-temple-city-down-to-t.html

What I find curious is the we do not hear too much chatter from the Maranatha faithful about their new QB, but they may be pre-occupied with baseball right now. Maybe they are planning to keep him under a blanket, and unveil him at the first game, or things are not working as planned.

former ram,

I share your enthusiasm, but "dominate" is a strong word for June.

TC will have it's hands full, trust me, with the big fronts of Rosemead and Arcadia. The tough, quick and now experienced line and backer crew of Arroyo will not show up on 9/11 with a T shirt that says "dominate me". These kids are gonna want our scrotum on a stick.

If you are friends with the TC line, start feeding them raw red meat now...and take it away from them 10 days into September. Teams are going to be payback hungry this season...and we better lose our grin and be up for it.

Goldenarm said:

woah,

Depends on who you have returning, of the two "beasts" I saw last year, I believe one graduated. The 6'4 kid if he is returning - he is one monster to block!

CatFan,

Your argument is a good one and totally valid. By memory, I believe TC was close to 3000 combined rushing yards last season....and that was with Ruckle seeing no real carries until week 5 against La Salle.

Following last years'TC/Wildcat game our O-line was impressed by M-town's physical defensive front. I believe some of the M-town kids played both sides of the ball - much like TC.

We lose the 6'5" 265lb Josh O at tackle, but have several big boys who will contend for that spot. Our kids have lifted and continue to lift hard...so we look to be bigger and stronger up front. I have followed this line group for 3 years and their strong point - PRIDE. They got each others back.

All the kudos and praise from last season MEAN NOTHING. The Ram line's biggest challenge - learning and adjusting to new things under new coaches.

J.A.F.,

Crockum will make the SGV proud on Saturdays. I'm sure of it. But did you just say "top returner hands down?" Lmao!!! Uhhhhh, no. You've got to take a trip to that hill up on Foothill Blvd. in La Canada and check out the kid wearing #4. B-E-A-S-T!!!

Monrovia returns 4 OL starters that blocked for a 2,000 yard rusher, defending RHL champs and CIF semi-finalists. 2nd team unit blocked for a JV team that went 9 and 1 and were also league champs.

Just heard. Maranatha has a new transfer quarterback, by the name of Cody, dont know if he is any good or not but i do know he has the same coaching background as their previous quarterback matt schillz.

Hell yeah Temple City has the best line next year. O'Malley, Sutton, Smith, Lumary, Angeles, and returners Truong and Wong will sure as heck dominate other schools' defensive lines.
