And then, there were two: Maranatha baseball on Friday and La Salle softball on Saturday give WSGV a shot to bring home two CIF-Southern Section championships

| | Comments (48) |

Well, we're down to two teams left so get ready for a lot of well-deserved pub for our two teams left standing. I have a good feeling we'll be celebrating two championships this weekend, first with Maranatha on Friday. They take on Woodcrest Christian on Friday night at Blair Field in Long Beach. The game is slated for 7:30 p.m. but the game could start late given there are two games before the Division V championship game. With our deadlines and a late start, we could have a not-so-colorful story on Maranatha, but I'll do my best. Instead of driving all the way back from Long Beach to my place in South Pasadena I think I'm going to head over to my friend's house in Fullerton to hang out and spend the night since I have to be in Irvine bright and early at 9 a.m. (yes, 9 a.m. is way too early for me). La Salle and Marymount play for the Division VI championship beginning at 10 a.m. at Deanna Manning Stadium (16 Civic Center Plaza) in Irvine. So, you have my thoughts. Two CIF championships this weekend, but what do you think? Are we bringing home two? One? None?

OTHER VIEW

Maranatha plays Woodcrest Christian, which defeated top-seeded San Jacinto, 7-3, to advance. Read the story in the Riverside Press-Enterprise.

NOTE: There is no local paper that covers Marymount, so there is no story we can link you to. Technically, Marymount is in the L.A. Times' coverage area but I don't think they covered any games.

I really like the colors here on your blog. did you design this yourself or did you outsource it to a professional?

It's been a long time since Usher released his hit single Lil Freak and I still enjoy it! The sample is wonderful with his sultry vocals and the horns work well with Nicki's hardcore rapping style. Though this track didn't chart as high as Usher's pop song, OMG, Lil Freak is definitely the better song, maybe the best on the album.

Alexandra Burke's newest single Start Without You is extremely addictive! It definitely earned the #1 spot on the singles charts and I hope Alexandra releases her second album soon! I wanna listen to Laza Morgan's debut album, too.

Why wouldn't a "First Team All Area" throw a single pitch in Post Season play? Gimme a break MS. Agenda?

"MS is a joke" you're showing your ignorance again (just under a different name). Clancy is definitely an up and comer. Things would have been much different for Mayfield this season without her. Although Mayfield plays in a relatively weak league, they also played some very tough competition this season too. Goodness, they convincingly beat Maranatha.

She is currently playing 18Gold for TeamSmith which is coached by former All-American and Olympian Julie Smith. Obviously they recognize Clancy for her talent and potential because she is only a Sophomore playing on their 18UGold team.

She'll be a standout in the next 2 years, but she'll have the jealous and petty individuals like you who will try and discredit her.

chkyrslf,

Hear hear!

Singling out any player with a negative is unnecessary uncalled for.

Since I have a "horse" in this race, I'll leave the pickin's for somebody else.

Good luck to San Dimas and to La Salle!

MS,

Good criticism, but I will stick with mine, the only player that I left out that I think deserves recognition is the TC catcher Brittney Vasquez. I would maybe exchange her for Skogsbergh or Tripoli. In my opinion all three are about equal as catchers. I have always felt that they should have a spot for a third catcher, since they are so important to the game.

"MS is a joke" is a joke. Really what a doink, jumps on the opportunity to attack one kid out of a whole dissertation.

Did you catch my note about the starting catcher for the public team being from Arroyo, who isn't even our area? what's that about?

MS, your logic is ridiculous and your bias towards La Salle is clear.

Clancy is a complete player? Ha! Where else does she play? Starts and ends with her? what's their options? Ha!

chkyrslf: I mostly agree with your opinions, but I have a few differences as listed below (I hope you don't mind me taking your list and copying and pasting with my opinions):

2009 "modified" Chky Softball All-Area Awards:

Player of the Year - Jessica Ferri (FSH) --- No question on this one. Ferri is one of the very best players to ever come from this area. Not just her pitching, but also her bat too. She has an unbelievable presence on the field and is a great leader. No doubt will make a very big impact as a college player.

Coach of the Year - Jennifer Moulden (Mayfield) --- Moulden is a worthy choice but she isn't a clear cut choice. The good news was that she was handed a very apathetic program with minimal talent (except for Clancy) and turned in a great season (regardless of anyones opinion of the competitiveness of their league). The bad news was loose the assistant coach that stands behind the backstop (he doesn't help your effort). You have to consider Nishiyama at FSH because not only do they compete in a division with schools 10 times their size, this year they surpassed all expectations and would have gone at least a couple of rounds further in CIF if not for the injuries to their pitchers. Also, Harper at LaSalle is extremely worthy of consideration. He has a good team to work with but no superstars and he has gotten the most out of them and gotten them to really play as a team this season.

1st Team

Pitchers - Allie Forillo (LaSalle)
Lauren O'Leary (La Canada)-- O'Leary is good with still a ton of potential but I still think Herlache is better, and what a 1 - 2 punch with Forillo. Both very different pitchers that complement each other and she pitches much smarter than O'Leary (but she should because she is much more experienced).

Catcher - Katie Tripoli (LaSalle) --- Good choice but I only saw her play SS this season, which I can't understand why that move (I must have just missed her at C). But from past observations great choice as Catcher, but not a good choice at SS. Although some consideration for Luera at FSH. Although Ferri is an excellent pitcher, she is not easy to catch because of both speed and movement. She also, nibbles corners which requires a good catcher to constantly frame. Luera got her some of those strikeouts and caught every pitch this season. Also, I noticed that Luera called all of the pitches with no aid from the bench. They were quite a battery this season. Also, saw Luera deliver some key clutch hits.

Infielders - Veronica Grant (Temple City)
Shelby Gogreve (South Pasadena)
Tiffany Rubin (Keppel)
Jessica Loicano (Temple City) --- you can't leave Amanda Ulf off of this list of 1st teamers. To me the most imortant position player on the La Canada team this season both with her fielding and her bat.

Outfielders - Morgan Barchan (Arcadia)
Shannon Brooks (Monrovia)
Marnie Hillier (Maranantha)

Utility - Maddie Herlache (LaSalle)--- much more than a utility player, and had great value as a pitcher at LaSalle. I'd put Herlache at 1st team pitcher and at least recognize either of the Ulf twins as utility.

2nd Team

Pitchers - Lauren Cox (La Canada)--- I would put O'Leary on this list as a 2nd teamer.
Katie Clancy (Mayfield)--- Clancy would be my 2nd teamer over both O'Leary and Cox because more than a good pitcher with a lot of potential, she is more of a complete player. Also, had very little support around her on an otherwise very weak team. O'Leary and Cox are just pitchers which makes them one dimensional as compared to Clancy and when one gets tired the other comes in. The game starts and ends with Clancy. Lastly, Hardwick is possibly worth consideration as a 2nd team pitcher over either O'Leary or Cox.

Catcher - Katrina Skogsbergh (South Pasadena) --- Great choice.

Infielders - Amanda Ulf (La Canada)
Annie Sommers (Maranantha)
Sam Miller (Arcadia)
Amanda Castro (South Pasadena) --- Edwards would be very worthy of consideration here. She's an extremely talented athlete and she plays very hard (sometimes too hard - to many errors, but maturity will fix that). But I'd take her immature any day, and I love that quiet, yet tough demenor! Prediction: she will be a superstar. Also, Wantanabe is a very worthy 2nd team consideration today and another future superstar!

Outfielders - Jessica Kosharek (Temple City)--- To me both Kosharek and Ulf are worthy of 1st team consideration.
Abby Ulf (La Canada)
Laura Parada (South Pasadena)

Utility - Kimmie Sommers (Maranantha) --- Seems to have potential but in my opinion unrealized. Maybe I just missed her good days. Don't know her but my observations make her not my type of player, so wouldn't be my choice. I would take any of my 1st or 2nd team alternative selections instead for my untility(Luera, Hardwick, Edwards, Wantanabe, Kosharek, or Ulf).

Good job chkyrslf. Blog don't beat us up for offering our opinions. At least they are positive suggestions rather than how some have tried in the past to promote certain kids by riping down others.

Any word on Ms Ferri's knee? Will she be able to pitch Next Tuesday?

Come on, don't you have 20 football threads that you can have this argument on?

No Joke -
I'm sure that Miguel would agree with this statement.
"Put up or shut up!" If you don't play Maranatha, you can't say you're better. I don't care WHAT division you are in. Those are the facts. Opinion is opinion but if one team will play anyone, anytime and several teams turn down their offer, if you pull for one of them then you have no argument.

No Joke said:

Maranatha and La Salle have to be the biggest complainers I've ever seen. Miguel isn't there a Muir or Pasadena or Arcadia passing league game you could cover instead of Maranatha and La Salle this weekend? La Salle is slightly bigger and plays teams like Bishop Amat while Maranatha is smaller and plays teams like Bishop and parades around as the best school in the WSGV. Let's see Marantha play Mater Dei or Bishop Amat or Arcadia for that matter. Playing schools with less than 20 students is a joke.

New crosstown rivalry??? These two schools have sort of been rivals for awhile. Only lately, La Salle has taken Maranatha off of it's schedule in sports like Baseball and Basketball where Maranatha has now become stronger over the last few years.
I am one who believes that this could be one of the best rivalry's in the area and they should play eachother in every sport possible.
Hats off to the La Salle football coaches for putting MHS on the schedule last year and this year. Let's keep that going. What happened to baseball and basketball though?? MHS improves and then you don't want to play anymore?? Come on!! Let's get those going again. Who's with me on this??

Even though I do not like getting into awards and comparing kids, I get the feeling that you might need a little help, so here you go:

2009 Chky Softball All-Area Awards:

Katie Clancy (Mayfield)

Catcher - Katrina Skogsbergh (South Pasadena)

Infielders - Amanda Ulf (La Canada)
Annie Sommers (Maranantha)
Sam Miller (Arcadia)
Amanda Castro (South Pasadena)

Outfielders - Jessica Kosharek (Temple City)
Abby Ulf (La Canada)
Laura Parada (South Pasadena)

Utility - Kimmie Sommers (Maranantha)

Thats what I got, there are some teams in our area that I do not have a lot of first hand knowledge about, so it is hard for me to select those players.

MM -

Maybe sent Coach Peterson an e-mail to arrange a time to talk. From my experience, he checks e-mail more regularly than his phone.

Miguel Melendez said:

Donk: All I have to say is "sticks and stones ... " I've had nothing but good experiences while on assignment at La Salle, even when I was a cub reporter eight years ago as a Star-News correspondent.

No word yet on Peterson. Every time I call I get a voice mail, but with spring sports winding down I'll find a way to get a hold and have a story ready to go soon.

The Donk said:

Miguel don't let the words of one person let you think that is how La Salle fans feel as a whole. I can not speak for everyone, but I think you covered the Agajanian story well. I mean what is he supposed to do get information on a possible firing and sit on it. He called Matheus and got the story from the horses mouth so to speak. Don't get so intense, the only reason you are all up in arms is probably because he posted a picture of the Maranatha softball pitcher and not La Salle's. hahahaha
With that said, hey Miguel any word from Peterson yet about La Salle's football team next year?

Miguel Melendez said:

Hate to say it La Sale Alum, but you're so way off base. In fact, every time I get on the phone with Backus and Agajanian they thank me for their support, therefore negating your theory, which is what it is. I don't favor ANY schools, not even my alma mater if you care to guess. I'm all for a great story and that's all I'll ever root for. Thanks for reading!

LA SALLE ALUM said:

When someone goes the lengths he does to destroy coaches careers such as Backus and Agajanian. Then yes he is a joke.

I was at the game yesterday, I heard all of La Salle talk about how Miguel handled the situation in the paper with the coach and how he favors Marantha.

I also know much more about the Backus story then he could ever dream of knowing. Instead of thinking about the ramifications he ran with a story that eventually hurt a very good coach. He almost did the same with Agajanian as well.

That was a non-issue in all aspects and he tried to blow it completely out context.

You shouldn't send anyone out there for the La Salle girls team. You might just jinx them.
