Football: Blair coach staying put, Duarte lacking numbers

| | Comments (71) |

UPDATED: We had limited space in tomorrow's paper. My notebook will have all the Blair details but will miss the Monrovia and Duarte notes. For those interested, Monrovia is set to hire a girls basketball coach later this week. They are down to two finalists and are expected to make a selection. Monrovia advanced to the semifinals last season. Duarte High is looking for a boys soccer coach. Interested candidates can contact athletic director Robyn Garcia at 626.599.5720. South Pasadena is looking for a baseball coach. Interested candidates should contact athletic director Ralph Punaro at 626.441.5820, Ext. 2980.

================================

With spring playoffs done and the only thing left undone is putting together the All-Area teams, I took some time to make some calls and get to the bottom of the rumors flying around in the wonderful world of high school football. First up, Blair. Rumors surfaced that second-year coach Gary Parks resigned and possibly took the job at Verbum Dei. Not true. Though he did contemplate applying for the position, Parks gave his word to Blair principal Rich Boccia he wasn't going anywhere. And his absence from practice at Blair? He was out of town with a family emergency in Texas. I'll have more on that and other good things happening at Blair in tomorrow's paper, but here's a quote from Parks that shows his class and why you want to root for him and his program to succeed:

I like this place and I want to see it blossom into something great. We talked about (the Verbum Dei vacancy); it wasn't in depth but they knew and understood that I was battling with the decision to stay or go because thing are a lot easier at home. But I shook the man's hand and that's all it takes for me. That's how my dad taught me -- a man's handshake should be good enough, and I shook Rich's hand and said I'm here.

Blair has some coaching openings along with Monrovia High. I'll have that in tomorrow's paper, but I'm going to keep this thread football related. Next up, Duarte. I put in a call to Falcons coach Tip Sanders. Rumor had it the team was fielding just seven players during spring ball. Turns out that wasn't all that far fetched. Duarte is averaging 10-15 players during this spring ball. Sanders doesn't know why that's the case but notes he went through the same situation while at Marshall and Blair before building them into a successful program. Today is the last day of spring ball and the team will begin practice again on June 22 at 5 p.m. at Duarte. Sanders' focus right now is working with the incoming freshman and build his program from the ground up. I asked Sanders if he's hired any assistants. "As soon as I find more players," he replied. Sanders said five coaches he retained from last year's staff changed their minds and have since left Duarte.

It went well, better D than O, but this early, that is usually the way it is.

LA Marshall had a few studs (MLB) but their talent wagon was overall kinda similar to ours

we got a 2 day at LA Southwest this weekend

GA,

LMFAO!!!!! How did it go btw?

Viking Fan,

Keep doing your thing!

Goldenarm said:

Stang Fan,

Your synopsis of LA Marshall was pretty much correct.

New York,

With the end of season madness, new directions, firings and hirings...SGV football has been like living on a piece of styrofoam passing through 30 knot ocean currents...all you can do is hang on for the ride and pray you end up in a tranquil bay or cove somewhere.

Overall, most schools seemed to have fared well.

The obvious exception is Duarte, and I think the D-rock faithful need to do some serious questioning as to why the departure of Crutchfield has toileted the football program...at least for this season. That should not have happened. They laid hands on a good coach...but what didn't they do that lead to a mass exodus of kids wanting to play ball? WRONG, WAY WRONG

Viking Fan said:

Unless you have students at Blair, and are actually involved with the school, you can't really know what's going on. You just see it from the outside. Coach Parks is already making changes in the program. Someone mentioned anybody being able to play, but that's not how Coach runs his program. If they don't have the grades, they don't hit the field. We had more kids still elligible at the end of the season than we have in previous years.

Coach Parks needs to know that he has parents support, because the kids will follow the parents lead.

I don't want to go back and forth with everyone on this because we all have our own opinions and we could carry it on and on and on....and that won't prove anything. But I'm sure we'll all get into it time and time again on here...that's the fun of it, right? :-)

Patrick Jones said:

Good luck, Coach Parks.

You should grab your football and run as far away from Blair as you can. Blair will never have a good team if they can't get their students to have a 2.0 GPA. Oh, wait I forgot. Boccia will let anyone play . . . as long as they are on campus. That doesn't mean they go to class - just on campus.

When you run away from Blair, do not turn your back while you run. Boccia will get you!

New York said:

It appears that Goldenarm has been asleep at the switch, so to speak. He could have taken advantage of Monrovia's dislocation last spring as well as that of PHS this spring to create somewhat of a Charter Oak West over at Temple City. Actually, is it possible that Coach Tip's loss has been Goldenarm's gain???

The Stang Fan said:

NY,

Yeah, I know. I actually left out the "Syphon Schools" who further exacerbate the problem and emphasize the point.

It's bad enough that Pasadena leads the nation with the highest percentage of families in private schools (at around 30%), but to have to compete against other public schools just makes it that much worse.

Btw Pasadena/Monrovia East HS (aka Charter Oak) isn't alone, but of course you know that.

New York said:

You forgot to add Charter Oak to the list of choices.

The Stang Fan said:

Reading I'm Just Sayin's response reminded me of the issue of dilution of local talent. Here's the list of the high schools in Pasadena that field football teams:

1. Muir
2. PHS
3. The Natha
4. La Salle
5. Pasadena Poly
6. Blair
7. Marshall

Just for ONE CITY! Well, two considering Altadena. Not to mention St. Francis and Flintridge Prep. Nine schools to decide from! Wow! Lot's of choices for parents, but not a lot of depth for coaches....

RHL FAN SAID said:

I agree with Anonymous,Boccia is push alot of good coaches out. I thought Bill Fennessey was the AD.How many times is he going to replace Fennessey. I think they have had five boy's basketball coaches in six years. They have had six Girl's basketball coaches in six years.

Boccia is not respected in the Rio Hondo League. They have had several AD'S in the last six years. I think fennessey has been the AD 2 or 3 times. Why is he always making changes?

Its time Boccia takes some responsibility. Is this how he runs his school? I don't know the man but as the leader of Blair, the school's Athletic Department has not been stable or functioning in a positive way for Student Athletes.

Good Luck Coach Parks you are going to need it.

Goldenarm said:

Stang Fan,

Truth is , I know absolute zero on LA Marshall, other than the enrollment is listed at 4300, over double that of TC.

Passing league is what it is ...and we got the swine flu pandemic of passing league activity this year...starting today and continuing Sat/Sun. By Sept ....I may even be able to throw the short post.
(followed by 2 years of physical therapy and rehab of course)

I'm just glad to see some football comps begin, we got some guys - now we get to see what they got.... in a pre-pad world of course. Time to break out Lester the Molester Hayes "stick em"...somebody catch that thing!!!

viking Dad,
I applaud you energy and enthusiasm all programs need that. However let’s keep it realistic it does not matter what type of plan or mission Coach Parks is on he must have the talent to carry it out. He won’t have the talent he needs to compete with the best in the nation as long as he is at Blair. Can he make the program better, most definitely he has some talent kids but a powerhouse? Wake me up when you wake up. You’ve stated “College coaches are on campus recruiting potential student athletes” Let the program be actually turned around before you start making outrageous claims. Believe me I’m not a Muir fan but how many D1 scholarships players did they have last year? Put that together with the Turkey Tussle tradition and you will figure out where the upper echelon kids will attend year in and year out. The Pasadena football order (as far as where kids will attend) 1. Muir 2. PHS, (the last couple of years) 3. Maranatha 4. La Salle with Blair and Marshall after that. After Muir and PHS that order can change from year to year but Blair become like Muir? Stop embarrassing yourself.

curiousgoerge said:

Anybody out there know if Coach Backus is coaching anywhere?

!stang! said:

Viking dad,
I honestly do not believe Parks will be there long enough for him to change the tide.My ear has been to the streets lately and many of the kids are shopping around for other schools{ they don't believe in Parks themselves}.And if you look at Blairs history when have they ever been good other than the 70's ? And tip had a decent year becuase he had a monster in the backfield! And plus it is twice as hard in 2009 to build a program with so many options aviable for Student /athlete . Once a kid get a glimspe that he is a decent player they transfer out to a bigger better school.
P.S- Muir will always run Pasadena from La Salle all the way down to Blair and everything in between!
Stang Nation !

The Stang Fan said:

Apache Joe,

Very unfortunate for the Apaches, but as GA said, maybe Backus can make up for the loss.

Out of area,

Eagle Rock? They're a city school...and the PSN isn't even delivered there.

GA,

Butt-kickin' from LA Marshall? LA Marshall? Even in June that's not gonna happen! Hope the boys learn and compete.

Anonymous,

I don't know the man, but I've heard the same sort of thing about Blair's principal.

viking DAD,

Hey....I'm glad you have enthusiasm for your son's/daughter's school. Kudos. But if you think for ONE MINUTE that Parks will turn the tide at Blair enough for Pasadena's REAL football players to start going there...well, sir, you are SADLY msitaken. That ship sailed in the 70's shortly after the Blair Pair. And as far as playing the "nations best"....I think I'll take Oaks Christian over St. Margarets any day of the week! Keep up the spirit though!!!

viking DAD said:

I am glad that coach choose this direction. The decision must have been troubling but a sigh of relief has been released. Stang fan, Blair will become what you believe Muir is. Coach sounds like he has a plan in order, a agenda that will eventually rise to the top. College coaches are on campus recruting potential student athlete's, if you saw the article this man is on a mission to bring the best in the country to compete against Blair. St.Margret's in football, Westchester and Carson in BOYS HOOPS. Playing teams like that Muir athlete's will eventualy come to the VIKING NATION !

GA, did RB land at Arcadia and if so when did this happen? What will he be coaching there? Will he still be teaching at TC?

Speaking of the Eagle Rock connection, why isn't Eagle Rock covered by TSN? It's probably the closest of the non Pasadena schools.

Goldenarm said:

the eagle rock connection must be bringing LA Marshall into the picture for TC.
sounds good....definitely a challenge...they sure can score points.

if your gonna take a butt-kickin, take it in june

So what I'm telling coach Parks is to watch out for his self because when the rubber meets the road the principal has a tendency to flip the script. Viking Fan how many coaching changes has there been in the Blair sports program based on the principal in the last 2 years, 7 or 8? Again coach Parks watch your back.

Anonymous said:

Viking Fan,
Nothing personal just stating facts. The principal is a person that could be considered to have questionable character. Well if you think seeing your job posted on the CIF website without your principal being man enough to inform you you're fired is good character than we have a difference of opinion. That sounds like a coward to me. As a matter of fact It did not happen to just one coach but several coaches. I'm not a coach so personal, Naw.

Charlie said:

LA Marshall good match-up for a first test 7-4 last year, 7-4 the yearb4, 10-3 in 06 and 10-3-1 in 05 you only get better by going against good teams

Goldenarm said:

WONKA,

TC has a honkin size passing league agenda and schedule ...easily double the normal year.

Whether this a good thing or bad, time will tell.

The QB's need it for sure...but the throwing (and seeing) with 11 versus 7 is waaaaay different. You can get timing and QB mechanics without passing tourney attendance...I still think the defensive aspects and player review are the top reasons for doing the PL's.

Goldenarm said:

Mustain, a former backer at TC, may be the new DC at San Dimas.

Apparently another TC'er has joined the San Marino staff as well.

Things just keep looking better at M-town.

Goldenarm said:

Apache Joe,

Bummer on losing An. On the positive side, the bald one (RB) has got to be a boost for the Apaches. He is an outstanding teacher of fundamentals, and for years at TC was instrumental in making good football players - into winning football players - and decent kids upon graduation.

RB and Coach D - Two coaches deservedly known for getting every drop of effort out of whatever talent they have. Examples are many.

Marty Valdes would be a good candidate for replacing An. Not sure if he is affiliated with another program or not.

The Stang Fan said:

I feel for Tip...that's a terrible situation. What'll probably happen is that he'll be forced to play A LOT of youngsters this year and next (with no JV team) and get the program up and going again, and turn them into a decent team in 2-3 years.

Btw, are kids just deciding not to play, or are they ALL transferring?

Random thought: No offense to Blair and I truly wish Coach Parks well (and obviously there is MUCH more to consider than simply football).......BUT if I lived within the PUSD boundaries and I REALLY wanted my son to have the best football experience in high school.....there is NO WAY that I would choose Blair. No way at all...

WONKA said:

Temple City has a passing league game tomarrow vs. LA Marshall @ TC. They seem to be coming together very well under the new coaching staff. Coach White has seemed to kept the tradition going at TC, SO FAR...Ive also heard that TC has 15 varsity coaches, any truth to this? Aren't we in a recesion?

Viking Fan said:

Well, I'm glad that Coach Parks made the decision he did, no matter what his reason. Blair's been the laughingstock of Pasadena for years and we need some stability to do something good with our sports program. We're going through some things all the way around and our kids deserve better.

Anonymous, sounds like you have a personal issue with Mr. Boccia.

Apache Joe said:

Wildcats Fan,

Paul An has left to become a graduate assistant coach at Fresno St. It is a DEVASTATING loss for Arcadia. He is the major reason why they had success in their O-line, especially in the 2007 season. He will be VERY hard to replace. Congratulations to him and a good luck to him as well. He deserves it.

New York said:

Correct. Things are looking good.

CatsFan said:

Coach Lujan was also added to the M-town staff.

CatsFan said:

Maddox is still the DC. They brought in Schuster to work with the receivers and defensive backs. He replaces Coach Griffin who left to coach at Boise State. I am hearing that Monrovia is loaded this coming season.

New York said:

Interesting take. How was Azusa prior to Schuster? Is there a chance that Azusa's recent success was related to a foundation that Schuster helped build? Maybe not. I'm just curious. One of my favorite coaches is also a former Azusa HC.

AzuzaRaider said:

Schuster 5-6 in 2006, 5-5 in 2005, and 4-7 in 2004. He is not a winner! Azuza didnt win until Scherf got here! and Everyone knows Schuster got the job because of "Daddy." how good was his Defense against Baldwin Park and Rosemead? Looks like San Marino and TempleCity got a gift, calling offensive plays against Schuster!

New York said:

Isn't Schuster also a former head coach at Azusa? I beleive he had a good record there, prior to leaving last year and then coaching at San Dimas one season. Maybe these guys heard how much talent Monrovia has and how great it is to be coaching in that program. It sounds like Maddox has quietly assembled a quality staff.

Observantcat said:

Goldenarm;
I wasn't quite sure but you could be right. Both he and Lopez were Co-D coordinators last season for San Dimas.

Goldenarm said:

i just wanted to ask you if you know whats going on with arcadia's lineman coach, Paul On?? I heared that he is leaving arcadia and is headed to Fresno State as a lineman Coach. If its true, its a tough loss for Arcadia cause Paul was a great coach and with such a talented returnin line coming back...what a shame.

Stang Fan,

I would have to agree with you in regards to the HOF game, it seems it is becoming a second tier game with second tier players! Don't get me wrong, there is definitely talent there, however, many of these kids aren't necessarily THE best in the area. There was a time when you use to go to the HOF game and pick up a program and get to see the players names with the schools in which they were going to be playing ball for at the next level right next to there name! I think with all these new games such as the fiesta the HOF has lost its appeal. Back in the day you had the big game which was the Shrine, the HOF game, and the 605! Now there is many games to play in!

In saying that, i do have to admit though that i like to see these blue collar kids out here playing with a chip on their shoulder! I can't wait for the first day in gear, hopefully it is today!

Matt,

no doubt I'm losing it...sleep deprivation, OT, you name it.

A fellow TC'er told me about the add on to Maddox' staff being a SD guy. Right now, if Maddox hires the local Pastry Chef - it's probably a good move. In fact, he could hire the whole Pastry Crew and still have less coaches than TC.

0-cat
you open at San Marino, and SM could again be undefeated at that stage. I'm surprised Mooney has not used some influence to stiffen the preleague opponent board. But.....even so, SM could be a better team than last year, particularly in the trenches. They have Hung, Forgatch and Yortsos coming back in the skill area...and SYortsos must sit out game 1 - due to suspension in a Spirit cheap-shot fest in a losing effort against the Clete last season.

M-town is clearly # 1 going in. Nobody else is close.

The Stang Fan said:

incorrect,

Thanks for the updates! It's unfortunate that the Fiesta has taken so many of the SGV's best, but hey, that's competition for you.

One problem with the HOF game is that they have limited each school to three players. Hell, it's an all-star game, let the best play. Had 3 of Muir's 4 scholarship players decided to play in the HOF game, one would have been left out and Dunlap (who you say is the best DB out there bar none) wouldn't have even been considered.

BigFatFan said:

Who are the QB candidates for the West Team?

incorrect said:

Stang Fan,

Don't know who the young man is, but he is the best one out there...bar none! There is a lineman from St. Francis that is a D-Lineman from St. Francis that is kicking everyone's ass! Sumler and Chavez are running around causing problems like always! Angel the QB from Rosemead and the South El Monte QB look good, however, i did not see the SEM kid yesterday! I'm surprised SEM's big WR is not out there!

There are some Monrovia kids out there: Williams, a safety, and a LB. The backer seems to be shining a little more at this point. Williams looks a little out of shape!

The Stang Fan said:

incorrect,

Please explain that name to me! Lol!

Anyhow, according to Miguel's previous thread on the Fiesta All-star game, Muir's four scholarship players were all headed to the Fiesta game, and not the Hall of Fame game. So, if the other kid out there has a ton of speed I'm willing to bet that's Chris Dunlap.

Any other WSGV players out there doing well so far?

Goldenarm,

Not to sure why there was no one represented in from Temple City, but like i mentioned before Josh Ouelette from what i understand was asked to play. A friend who once coached the Hall of Fame game mentioned to me that a lot of kids end up backing out after once committing! I'm assuming senior trips or just being plain lazy! Endless these athletes are going to play at the next level, my assumption would be that they are going to be out of shape; unless they played a spring sport!

Stang Fan,

In regards to Muir players i did see three kids that were wearing Muir helmets! One of them was wearing a solid gold helmet, it could of been Alhambra. However, he was hanging out with the Muir kids! All i know is the kid with the solid gold helmet plays corner and has locked everyone down. The young man has some serious make-up speed!

New York said:

It's difficult to judge a coach based solely on the school he is coming from, for better or worse. Furthermore, I am sure our defensive strategy will start and stop with Coach Maddox, no matter who may be named the DC. If Coach Maddox felt the new staffer is qualified then we need to trust his decision. So far so good with what Coach Maddox is doing at Monrovia.

Observantcat said:

I meant 46 points to Baldwin Park. But you get my drift.

Observantcat said:

Goldenarm: New York:

I think the D. Coordinator goes by the name of Danny Lopez. But I would throw caution to the wind in thinking that he will come in and create greatness looking at his stats at San Dimas. My thoughts were that if San Dimas had played Monrovia this year the game would have looked similar to the Rosemead game. San Dimas defense stunk!..... That was their biggest flaw, Giving up 79 points to Baldwin Park was the biggest mystery of 2009 football. San Dimas allowed 322 points to its opponents last year compared to Monrovia only allowing 202, I don't know about you guys but I don't see the benefit. I would like to say that Monrovia in my opinion has one of the best Defenses aligned coming back to the 2009 season but they need a real strong and competitive coaching staff to show them the ropes, not some one who has just hung around locker rooms most of his career and got upgraded to DC. Just my opinion, I hope that I'm wrong.

A word of caution to coach Parks. When shaking your principal's hand keep an eye on the other hand. He has been known to do harm with that other hand, watch your back. Don't believe me ask many of his former coaches. Get out now because it’s no fun seeing your job listed as open on the CIF website without your knowledge of it being posted. That’s who you’re dealing with so save yourself and take the job at Verbum Dei.
