==============================
First, an apology.
I've been so busy with everything going on I've left little time to inform you all about the Public vs. Private All-Star Softball Game. The private schools roster is set but I'm still tweaking the public roster. I'll make some final calls today and update this blog with the final roster. Practice is set for Monday at Temple City High. The private team will begin practice at 3 p.m. and end at 4:30 p.m. The public schools will go from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. The game is set for Tuesday at Live Oak Park in Temple City. The home run derby begins at 5 p.m. and the game will follow. The public schools will be coached by La Cañada's K.C. Mathews while the private schools is coached by Flintridge Sacred Heart's Kirk Nishiyama and Mary Schneiders and La Salle's Mike Harper. Again, apologies for apologies for the prolonged process. As Year 2, 3, 4 and 5 come around we'll get things done in a more timely and efficient manner. Thanks for the patience thus far =)

They are usually small and are better for ladies that don't carry too much. It might only take a phone and you wallet.
Great post, thanks admin for shring this article. T'm searching for this article for several days, finally I got it !
Chcky is correct. This game was played up big the last two years and you swept it under the rug. Fred J was there 2 yrs ago and Galetti last yr. No Miguel this time around? Unbelievable.
Miguel,
Just as an experiment, do terrible coverage on a big football game, and then afterwards tell the bloggers that the boys had fun and "thats all what should matter", and see what your response is. As a matter of fact don't cover an offseason passing league scrimmage properly and tell them the same thing and see how it floats.
Its all good.
So Miguel, alien probing cannot be much worse than ours...
Much to everyone's dismay, I have not been abducted by aliens. Glad to hear the game was exciting. As far as coverage goes: I don't pick the photos, I don't tell our designers where stories should be placed and I didn't write the story. Sorry the coverage didn't appease everyone. The important thing is the girls involved had a great time and, really, that's all what should matter. We'll do things in a more timely manner, and who knows, maybe I'll end up covering the game this time around.
Has Miguel been abducted by Aliens?
Yep, I missed a bunch of great plays and players, thanks for filling those in. And I certainly missed by not naming Marnie Hillier. With a bat like that she could have a real future in the game if she wants it. Fun stuff!
Great game! Miguel we were looking forward to seeing you there. Maybe next year. But good coverage none-the-less.
Chcky, I thoughgt your comments were well intended and right on... You left out:
Great plays in right (and a perfectly executed sac bunt) by Maranatha's MARNIE HILLIER who came in second in the HR Derby.
A GREAT 7th inning AB by Rio Hondo Prep's MACEE MURPHY (about 8 or 9 pitches?)
Some great plays on hard hit balls to left by Monrovia player #7 (Laura Arnett?).
Hey, Miguel...When are the ALL Area teams comimg out?
By the way, my initial entry about the Public/Private game has been reentered down below at 6/10 8:20am.
Great game! Nice hit to win the game. That's the way to do it. Thanks to all who worked to make it happen.
For the TC players Live Oak Park brought back memories of where they first started playing. I'm sure all the players have a story of hard work, fun, wins and losses. With that much emotion involved it would be very hard to capture in a short story.
It looked like the players were having a good time even though their commitment to get this far was clearly evident in the way they played.
Again, Thanks for the opportunity.
maybe you were censored for your shameless promoting of all everything
Miguel,
How do you feel about these comments about the coverage? Do you think it is merited?
Come on its just softball, why waste the space?
Pretty good pictures though, maybe Miguel can post more on this or a new thread.
PSN sends a photographer to this great game and all we get to see is 10 photos on-line???
PSN posted DOZENS on photos of the all star basketball game they sponsored.
Overall, that was a pretty solid game played last night. I don't think that I have ever felt a crowd so happy for one kid getting a walk-off. Both sides seemed to appreciate the dynamic ending.
For the reporter being there for the entire game the article was nothing up to par about the game. next time send someone who will pay atttention
Not sure that is why you and I were censored, because my first comment didn't even mention the coverage and it was censored, but my second comment was not censored.
Mine was censored as well, assuming that it was because I was critical of the coverage as well.
I guess my previous comment was censored - not sure why.
Miguel - so, the Pasadena Star News puts on the Public vs. Private game (which is great, thanks). The game is OUTSTANDING, a truely extraordinary contest. I picked up the paper today expecting to see a full color picture of Maddie Herlache hitting the ball out of the park and a page one story, with more on page 3. What did I see - nothing on page 1, and a small black and white picture on page 3 with an article and headline that you would miss if you weren't looking for it. What's up with that?
I have been silenced
chky
Great game last night! Thank you to all that had a hand in putting it on.
Also, kudos to Maddie Herlache for her clutch walk-off 3-run HR to win it! Herlache hammered the ball her first 2 times up with nothing to show for it, so seemed fitting.
A great finish to a great game!
GREAT GAME!
Thanks to Miguel and Gino for adding the So Pas Kid
Glad to see that happen!
Who does she play Travel for?
and where is she attending college?
To the young ladies who might read this post, you were absolutely wonderful last night, every single one of you. From Maddie Herlache hitting the walk off, to Katrina Skogsbergh who showed that not only did she belong, but showed she was a starter, to Audrey Guillen who showed up and showed that she can play in any game and have an effect on the final score with her bat , to Kimmie Sommers who is still a force of nature, to Devon Zerebko, who made one of her patented "there-is-no-way-you-are-going-to-get-it-by-me" layouts at first, to Kelsey Hardwick's un-hittable drop-ball, to Morgan Barchan's shot to left field with her undeniable D1 speed, to Jessica Ferri's unquestionable spirit and smile, (even though she couldn't be in the game,) to Tiffany Horton's unselfish swing that started the last inning rally, to Ally latta's consistant swing, to Destiny Quinn's sheepish smile after giving up the walk-off and her teammates' celebration of her outstanding effort, to Jessica Kosharek's big cut, to the underclassmen cheering on their teams in their high school or travel ball garb, to Veronica Grants patient at bat and obvious skill, to Katie Tripoli's rocket arm, to Abby Ulf's performance in the HR derby, to her sister, (Amanda's) skill and intensity, to the rising energy of both teams toward the end of the game that said emphatically "wow, we really want to win this game", to all of you and your heart. You are the best!
Miguel,
I woke up this morning to see the article on the Public/Private softball game last night. A celebration of the area players and teams which lived up to its billing and beyond. The article put me back to sleep. What an exciting game! Crowded around the whole field, tacos flowin', the kids were in to it, the crowd was in to it. What a night for local softball...how about that coverage? zzzz. I put my .50 cents in for that alone..I wish I could get a refund and buy a 1/4 cup of coffee with it.
I believe everyone expected to see Miguel there,right?...He is the guy who is going to get it right...right? Apparently he was way too busy with the Blair coach article...that must have kept him up all night. (By the way, with the amount of time and energy Blair puts into football, you think that they would be able to muster a varsity softball team.)
Listen I do not doubt the work that you have on your plate, but when are you going to realize that fastpitch softball is the game that is huge for female athletes in the Southland? This is their game. Look at half of all the rosters of NCAA softball teams nationwide, they are made up of girls from Southern California. That is millions of dollars of scholarship money that is flowing through our local cities and families, big news, right? Guess what, all of these girls have parents and family and they all buy papers, if it is done right.
You missed this one Miguel...again. Way to leave us wanting more.
Thank you, players, for an exciting & suspenseful game! Very supportive crowd, too.
How fitting that the Arroyo kid scores the public's only run & the SP kid puts in a fair night's work at 3rd! Kudos to K.C. Mathews & Chuck Gunter for coaching their game with their line-up.
And, LH, whoever you are, if you had a hand in getting the SP kid into the game, thank you for the opportunity!
The SP kid showed up because she loves to play the game. She has enjoyed 4 years of softball with some terrific coaches, who taught her not only about the game, but about life & doing your best, on & off the field.
And after 4 great Tiger years, this game was the icing on a very rich cake!
Thanks to all who helped make this happen!
There were a couple of things that I saw in this game that really set it up for an incredible finish that were not brought out in the story on the web-site this morning.
In the top of the first inning, the public team got their first two batters on base via errors, but then Maddie Herlache got busy and struck out two and then got a long fly out to center to end the threat. Her composure in this situation really set the table for the Private team to be in a position to come back in the end. She was up against a group of very talented hitters and she showed great maturity in not falling apart when the first inning jitters got the best of the defense behind her.
For the Public team, the play of Kat Skogsbergh at third base and behind the plate was tremendous. She made very difficult plays look routine, taking a grounder deflected off the pitcher and throwing to first. Picking up short hops on the run.
Great game by everyone.
What a game! Well played with a great ending!
I do have to say that the SP kid, Katrina Skogsbergh, came through with some sick defense and her bat as did the Arroyo kid, Audrey Guillen, who hit a single and scored the run for the Public team. On a special night like this, inclusiveness is the word.
Way to do the right thing Miguel and what a shot by Maddie Herlache.
Tonights game was fantastic. All in attendance were treated to a great game and we were able to see some great players play their last game in their HS uniform...what a treat.
It appears that LH's phone calls may have helped get the SP player added on...thanks LH for helping.
If anyone saw the game it was obvious that all the stink about her proved to be correct. She showed that she deserved to be there!
What a great kid to be a topic of blogs and after all this show up. Most wouldn't have the guts to do this. I saw Keith reporting from the sidelines. Was Miguel there?
Congratulations to Private for a stunning 2 out Victory. And thanks to the people who put this on at Live Oak Park. After attending the last three years my vote is to keep it there. Easy parking, plenty of room and good food.
In the 7th inning, Maddie Herlache hit a home run with runners on second and third
to win the game 3 to 1.
Congrats to the Private Schools team!
Good luck to all the girls tonight, have fun, enjoy the competition.
Nothing screams credibility like a silly name.
Please do not try and categorize your commentary as someone who simply wants someone to move on. It doesn't read that way, to me. You have the recognizable capitalized scream. That screams personal connection. You say you don't mind dissenting opinion, but you apparently mind mine. I spoke about it for a total of 1 day and 1/2 during the period where I felt that I could affect change, then stopped talking about it, then you stepped in a day after I stopped and said all you want me to do is stop. I don' buy it. Also the concept of "eligibility" is not personal, and I never made it that way. All I ever did was point out that the decisions that were made were in character with the people involved and not inclusive like these games have been in the past. Some individuals tried to make it seem personal. My concerns were legit.
Do you really beleive that calling yourself "Chky" gives you greater "credibility" than someone called "Anon". I think the point: move on and let's discuss the accomplishments of the players selected - that is a very valid suggestion.
Discussing who got screwed seems mis-placed in this discussion and is an issue that would be more appropriately discussed off-line and face-to-face with the PSN rather than in public code-name postings.
Let's celebrate accomplishments of this season and this fun event and move forward.
Lets Just hope the South Pas kid, gets a call today!
Mr Anonymous (10:23),
You lose a little credibility yelling at people for being anonymous under the moniker "Anonymous."
Those people who have slid over from Freddie's blog, quoting me and trying to say that I am saying something negative about a kid, do not realize that I am a player advocate (to a fault), always have been. And the fact that you are coming over here, arguing a point for the first time validates my points.
Chi Chi,
From what I understand, the Public team is picked by the Prep Staff from the PSN. This does, from what I understand, somehow include Freddie Robledo who is the Prep editor for the Tribune and still has some sort of jurisdiction/input in the PSN area which probably explains the decisions made in this situation. Freddie does know softball, but he is very busy with his area.
I am looking forward to seeing the game, it is really a blast every year. I'll be the person with the fake nose and glasses.
Thank for the effort LH, but I think that I have pissed off these guys so much that they would never do the right thing on my suggestion, even if it is glaring. Right guys?
This happens every year that someone feels that some kid got cheated out of an All-Area selection and/or an All-Star game invite.
It's certainly not a perfect system, and you're not going to please everyone.
Don't mind the dissenting opinions either, but at some point you just have to move on. Plus, I think you are creating more embarrassment for the particular kid, than the apparent indignity you feel that they are suffering for not being selected. If I were this kid I’d be more embarrassed to show up at this point. Unfortunately, you are dragging other kids into it by questioning their “eligibility”, which is inappropriate.
Frankly, who are all of these anonymous voices who feel that they have the say on what determines eligibility. GET OVER IT AND MOVE ON!
It would be far more interesting to hear positive discussion about the kids that were selected rather all this negative banter.
once again......
WHO PICKS THE TEAMS!!!!!!!!!!
After a weekend from softball, I made as many calls as I could to get the So Pas kid in.
Lets hope they do the right thing!
correction: then are you saying that Brittany Vasquez should have been the starting CATCHER for this team?
correction: then are you saying that Brittany Vasquez should be the starting CATCHER for this team?
arroyo plays all these teams in preseason so apparently there is some relation between these schools. comical how a bunch of adults still believe if they kick and scream they'll get their way. tell you kids life aint fair, build a bridge and get over it.
I can't believe a group of adults would sit here in a public forum that these girls READ and make someone like "the arroyo girl" feel like she isnt wanted. You say its not personal?
LH "Understand Audrey is a Good kid, and a hell of a Hitter." Damn Straight!
chky "she is taking away a spot from a kid in our area that is very capable of filling the void and not only that, she is starting in front of another kid from our area that will now not be starting with her pitcher from her team."
So if starting pitcher is from TC, then are you saying that Brittany Vasquez should have been the starting pitcher for this team? You telling me this isnt personal??
The Arroyo girl ye all are jabbing about (Audrey Guillen) hit a double over the left fielder off of Los Altos' Diana-Lynn Patterson top 8th inning in the North vs South Senior All Star Game @ Mt Sac three nights ago. F-Y-I.
I'm a firsthand witness from the pressbox where I saw and penciled in eveything. Thought I'd give some input here.

La Salle 1 9 3
Marymount 3 5 2
Very sloppy play by La Salle is what has hurt them. There were ctually a lot more than 3 errors.
Marymount found the big weakness in La Salle's defense and have kept attacking her.
La Salle pitcher did not look sharp and had issues with control.
La Salle great effort with 2 outs in bottom of 7(h with #1 and #2 batters back to back doubles. Then flyout to left.
Isn't Rich Diaz a head coach for LaSalle?
It is my understanding that he and Mike Harper are both named as co-head coaches at LaSalle's athletic dept. If his is the case then Diaz just got forgotten and he along with his co-head coach Harper are playing in a CIF Championship game as I type.
Another big screw up by the PSN? How come three coaches were named for Private and only one for public?
Miguel,
I'm sorry for mispelling your name.
It's apparent that there will never be a perfect system when it comes to selecting kids for recognition in sports. What is apparent is that it can be improved! Whether it be for this year or the following years to come.
1) identify the schools in the area for selection
2) identify all Seniors
3) only allow players from the identified schools to participate, unless #'s are neeeded to fill
4) triple check roster to make sure this years mistake doesn't happen
5) Call it what it is...a "Senior Allstar Game"
6) start with 2 players from each school and then go to 3, 4 or whatever
I don't think the PSN should say how this was formed this year as it will become a whole new Blog issue. We have all agreed it's not perfect. What I do think is they should identify how (without individual names) the process will be handled for the following years and what they have added or done to improve the process of selecting local "AREA PLAYERS"
LH....map quest CV from LaCanada...Eagle Rock from SP...stupid and unvalid point..LOL
Just Saying...WHY DID YOU SHOUT AT ME? I have only posted 3x in two years under the same name. I appreciate you pointing out my typo's....very kind of you to care
who,
ok, lets move on from our BS and get to what matters.
I love you too LH.
Now we have to get the powers that be, Miguel, to see it and fix it, it is definitely the right thing to do and easy to fix. A four year starting senior who plays 18 Gold and I was told tonight that she is walking on at UNLV next year. She has a very strong arm, some speed, and had a pretty good year this year. I think she will be a nice addition, whadayasay buddy, come on.
PS-As a bonus i will stop buggin' you about it if you do. I will even say some nice things about Keith and Scott.
hey rhlfan2,
IT'S MIGUEL, NOT MIQUEL...
YOU GIVE AWAY THAT YOU HAVE MULTIPLE IDENTITIES BECAUSE YOU ALLLLLWAYS MISSPELL HIS NAME.
SMARTEN UP!!
Lh or I have never said the the So Pas kid shoudnt be included she should. The fact that you called out the Arroyo kid, makes it personal. What do you expect?
You called her out? BOTH situations are WRONG here
1 you shouldnt have called out the arrotyo kid
and 2) The south pas kid should be added, even if it happens now! ADD HER OWN, the arroyo kid plays multiple positions and the So Pas kis plays more than Catcher so add her, no Biggie!
WHO and LH,
Don't you get it, nobody wants the Arroyo girl out of it, I am sure she is great...they just want the SP kid in. she deserves to be there. It really is sad. Imagine if the Arroyo girl didn't get invited to play in the senior game for the Tribune how would you feel. Oh and please re-read Rich's "origin of the game" letter and tell me that the SP senior should not be invited.
I really wish other people from the area would step up and let Miguel know that this is not right.
Miguel, you really need to address this, it would be really simple to fix.
Just wanted to know, who picks the teams?
Hey LH They will never get it!Dont worry about it. I know who you are! WE HAVE YOUR BACK lol
When the arroyo kid wins the HR contest we will be laughing! If this game was being held in "our Area" we wouldnt have any issues- Whateva!
GAME ON BABY GAME ON !
To the PSN Star News(Miquel): How can you NOT have the Senior from SPHS in this game. She was a 4 year starter for SPHS and is the only other senior catcher in the local area from the Public side. If your papers coverage is about "readership areas" which I belive it is,then I would like to know what the PSN distribution rate is in El Monte Vs the Pasadena area? Isn't this game about the area in which you distribute? I have no complaints about El Monte or any players around there but my point is that they are covered by the Tribune. If they already had a game and some of the kids from the PSN "readership area" played in it them shame on you unless they didn't have the #'s to play, which I doubt is the case. Why don't you have anyone from CV playing?...because they are not in the PSN "readership are" enough said. Maybe I missed all the articles about Arroyo this season in the PSN or was it just when LaSalle beat them that you actually covered them in the PSN? I would suggest that boundaries of you "readership" be defined. It is obvious that only a select few are invited. Again A SPHS senior catcher is not even a sub and players from outside the PSN "readership" are invited.....pure crap and political
thats deep!
The So Pas catcher is available (thanks for checking, chkyrslf!) and is happy for her 2 teammates who made the team. She'll be there on Tuesday, cheering them & the Public team on!
Miguel,
Help me please..it just doesn't make sense to me
The Public vs. Private game is a bit of an undertaking to put on.
Last year, I spent a lot of time organizing the game and I know Miguel has the same undertaking this year.
It was one of my last true duties at the paper and looking back, it was an enjoyable one.
I'm not sure it works this year, but the last couple of years Gino Buccola was instrumental in putting together the private roster, while the public roster was up to us.
Congratulations to those who will be participating. And remember, think University New Mexico. I just had to put that in.
Okay So this will be my last post as I am done with this
Since you need to know my whole background I guess? Here it is.
I am Originally from Rosemead. Many friends and Family have played at Rosemead HS and Arroyo HS, I coach kids from all over. Yes some from El Monte. Okay Yeah I moved to San Marino- No big deal
Doesnt mean I dont know where I come from right? No point there?
I just dont understand what your point is. Rich already explained how this actual game was developed. The Fact that Arroyo was included Before, why not now? Maybe the last 2 years they didnt have a worthy Senior, WAIT I know for a Fact, they didnt thats why they didnt get a nomination. THIS Year however Audrey was worthy enough.
Dude I dont know what you want from this!
AND DO I HAVE A SAY ON WHO GETS IN ON THE GAME?
YEAH SURE I DO- COME ON! Thats plain stupid!
Lastly I did a Quick Mapquest from Temple City High School to Arroyo High School. Guess what its literally 4 miles away from eachother - lol!
Ok, this really makes sense.
Lets see, LH, you are stoked about a kid from El Monte making the PSN senior game, and you are so pissed at me that you are making some odd claim that I don't like her because she is from El Monte, yet you are from San Marino.
Ok then, do you honestly think that El Monte is part of the PSN coverage area? And if so tell me how that works. (beside the fact that 4 years ago there was a player from Arroyo in the game.)
What i would really like is for Miguel to explain it to me or bend a little and be inclusive. I am not looking for the kid from El Monte not to play. Mr. LH from San Marino has deducted that.
One more question, Mr LH, did you have anything to do with the roster?
CHKYRSLF
Are you asking me this question
Honestly, do you consider yourself part of the Pasadena Star News Area?
IF so yes I do. I live in San Marino.
Y wouldnt I consider myself part of the PSN Area?
Jackie Najera from Mayfield was invited to play in this game - not sure if she is available or not.
I agree BL
But some times things need to be clarified
We didnt start this!
Anyways who cares the Line ups are set, nothings going to change, let everyone complain if they want was done is done!
Wait a minute, she is from El Monte? Now that really ticks me off!
Just playing... like I said it has nothing to do with the young lady or El Monte, but it has everything to do with the fact that she's the only one from out of the area playing on either team in this game and she is taking away a spot from a kid in our area that is very capable of filling the void and not only that, she is starting in front of another kid from our area that will now not be starting with her pitcher from her team. Thats that.
The fact that there were several players from our area on the Tribune team shows it is a different type of game. If they were to open up this game to that sort of inclusiveness I would have no problem with it. But to diss the local players like they are, I think it is reprehensible.
Honestly, do you consider yourself part of the Pasadena Star News Area?
I am really hoping for a response from Miguel about this, not her mother and father. You could settle this, Miguel, with a logical response as to why this decision was made, or to just bend and make it inclusive.
Lets calm down people! Its just a game. Lets just make peace ane enjoy the game come Tuesday :)
CHKYRSLF
Its best if you do check yourself and just shut up already You are not making any valid points
Yes Audrey played at the Senior game at MT SAC
She ropped a Double off of Diana Patterson(Los Altos)
So WHAT?
P - Kelsey Hardwick (Temple City
SS - Veronica Grant (Temple City)
2B - Amanda Ulf (La Cañada)
LF - Shannon Brooks (Monrovia)
Sub - Tiffany Rubin (Keppel)
Sub - Brittany Vasquez (Temple City
All these kids played in that game
SO WHAT? Why pick on Audrey Because she is From El Monte ??? Oh Now I get it!
Give me a Break
First of all, stop yelling.
I have plenty of crap to talk, I never run out of that. You must have made your last post before you read my last one.
Anyway, thanks Keith and Miguel for giving priority to Tribune players over the kids in our area.
Please answer my question LH, did the Arroyo player play in the Tribune senior game?
ALL OF A SUDDEN NO MATTER WHO PLAYS IT WILL BE A GOOD GAME.haha! Amazing that when you provide facts. no one has any crap to talk!
LH,
Hey, I already said that she is probably a great player, and I am not dissing on her. Never would.
My point is that we participate all year in this blog with this paper discussing the same teams and the same players and have contests against each other that conclude in these games and awards. In this process never, in recent years (except apparently one time 4 years ago), has Arroyo been included at all. However we do have kids that do see this area as their domain and would appreciate the recognition that they deserve. Now, the Tribune fully covers Arroyo and has a senior game which was incredibly inclusive, 41 players. This year our game is very exclusive. So be it, but the problem that I have is that they are suddenly excluding the players that were in the mix all year with somebody who has not until now. Why not put in Bishop Amat players on the Private Team?
I am sorry this is a legit question that is pointed towards no one except Miguel and Keith.
Am I alone with this concern? And I should also say that if this game was a little more inclusive, like it has been in the past, this would not be an issue
Answer me this, did she play in the Tribune senior game?
Trust me, my little opinions will have no effect on whether these kids enjoy playing the game, the same as they will have no effect on how this game is run.
sincerely,
THE JERK
chkyrslf,
Maybe our Blogfather can help us answer that question.
I really don't know.....Miguel?
Personally, it doesn't matter who plays, it will be a great game!
Come on guys. Miguel is an Orange County guy who is still learning the boundries of his own paper. He started covering Duarte this year although that makes a lot more sense than Arroyo. But he doesn't cover Eagle Rock which is closer than La Canada. At least there is a game.
I will anwer your question
about the arroyo player. You can go ahead and believe that its who you know not what you know thats fine.
However just to remind all of you, who only started following this game about a year ago.
4 Years ago Franseca Gonzales 4 Time arroyo ss/p Starter, Junior College Player of the year and Now the 3b player at Cal State Fullerton was the MVP of this game, which was held at Arcadia High School. MY POINT? That Arroyo has always been included in this game from the start!
And as for you stiring this up like this is wrong! Understand Audrey is a Good kid, and a hell of a Hitter. I am sure her reading this will make her feel really good about her last High school Game!
THANKS JERK!
Somebody help me out here. Is there a reason why there is an Arroyo player starting at catcher for the Public team when they are not and have never been in our area?
Bueller...anyone?
The Arroyo catcher has confirmed :)
It depends on if Ferri is pitching.
Why don't you answer my question about the Arroyo player, Deacon Blue? I am sure you know.
So....Who will win this game?
I say Private 5-2.
If I am wrong about the South Pas catcher's availability, let me know and I will shut up. Especially since you say that you can't confirm the Arroyo player's availability.
Miguel,
Please answer this question. Why do we have a starting catcher on the public team from Arroyo? Arroyo is covered by the Tribune and they have already had their senior game. This is not right, I am sure the player is great, but this isn't her game. Is somebody close to her and stuck her in? politics?
We have two senior catchers in our area with their pitchers pitching, one of them is in the game and from what I understand, the other is available, but not invited. I had this catcher picked as my second team all area behind the private team catcher. This kid is an 18 gold player and has been a four year starter for South Pas. Whats up?
I have to say that at this point you are missing the celebratory nature of this event. The Tribune had 41 seniors playing in their game.
I like the idea of the Seniors getting together with players they have played with or against all through high school. My daughter enjoyed getting to know the Ulfs on the same side for a change. They were good representatives of their school and sport.
Why -
I have no bad feelings for Poly - I am not even sure how you are inferring that. My argument has nothing to do with Poly.
The argument for Amy being on the All-Area team is basically that she was picked as Player of the Year by the Prep League coaches over all of the other players in the Prep League. These are people who saw her play regularly and they put her above every player in the Prep League. There were plenty of Prep League players on the All-Area team, it seems to me that it was an oversight that she was left off the team or the Pasadena Star News just disagrees with my opinion and that of the Prep League Coaches from last year.
We really don't need to go over this again, as I made the same argument last year. My whole point in bringing it up was just to explain comments anonymous made about a problem with a Mayfield player from last year. There was no problem, just a difference of opinion.
R Clancy your argument about Amy Vergel De Dios was that she won the home run derby? She was a singles hitter who didn't even lead her team in rbis and her team finished tied for 2nd (aka 3rd) in a weak Prep League. I see a lot of 2b and ss listed on that honorable mention team and the list of players seems awefully long to begin with. So she batted with a high average. And she was the Prep player of the year? That tells me there must be some bad feelings towards Poly.
an anonymous thesis at that.

this game is not an all star game and was never intended to be. This game was formed a few years ago when temple city resident came up with the idea of having a game with seniors who during their high school career as a softball player that never had the opportunity to play on a platform where they could be recognized. I was involved in picking the public school players that year and sending them an invitation to play in the game.
the number one criteria was that you were a senior and you were available to play, stats were not even taken into consideration, and little do you know many players were not able to participate in this game due to other commitments, graduated, still in CIF play, and in some cases in travel ball tournaments, that is why the dates have been adjusted this year and again next year.
I am sure the girl from Mayfield is a very good softball player and I would almost be certainly sure her parents have been contacted to play, and in many instances the school is contacted as well. Maybe you should ask them before you think she was left off the team, you just might be surprised with the answer ansd assuming she was left off the team
As anyone who follows high school sports very good athletes are not recognized and yet go on to play at a high level of competition, for some reason some players get much exposure and others do not, that is why this game was created to give the player that was not recognized, her chance to do just that during this game as well as meet other players from other schools.
So in your mind if you think this is an all star so be it, but to the people who formed this game it was never our intention. I hope everyone comes out to the game and has a great time watching the girls participate in their last game with other senior class mates from the class of 2009

Easy on the thesis. Communication should be clear concise and to the point. I haven't check a softball thread in a month and now I will return to the world of Baseball. Yikes.
Sorry - meant to say "Amy is now playing for Villanova".
The issue with the Mayfield player last year was not with this game. Amy Vergel De Dios was not included in the Pasadena Star News All-Area team despite the fact that she was voted Prep League Player of the Year and she won the Home-Run Derby at the Public vs. Private game last year. Amy is not playing for Villanova.
I know it happens all of the time that stats are mysteriously missing from Maxpreps and then when you check them the next logon they magically reappear. The Mayfield ststa are there now. I'm sure it's a glitch with Maxpreps and it happens all of the time.
Nevertheless, for senior allstar selection, I'm sure that stats are a minor factor as compared to hands-on observation. Primarily because with most teams you can't count on the stats being accurate, and in most cases they are very inaccurate.
Also, keep in mind the teams in this area compete on a number of very different competitive levels from very high level to very low CIF divisions. Sometimes competition within the same CIF division can vary greatly from league to league (Rio Hondo League and Prep League are in the same CIF division but there is a huge difference in the level of competition between both leagues). Especially in comparing stats, even if they were accurate, comparing a batting average or ERA in a competitive Div. 1 team is very different in comparing it a batting average or ERA in a Div. 7 team. That huge competitive difference exists in the Pasadena area just within Div. 5 between two leagues.
I would disagree with a previous blog statement saying, "this is not an allstar game". This is very definitely an allstar game and being a senior starter is not what makes a player eligible. The great majority of seniors are starters, and for allstar selection you look at a player in comparison to other senior players of their same position. Would you pick this particular senior as a better player at their position as compared to the other senior players at the same position (would you at least put them in the top two players at their position in the area)?
The harsh truth to non-allstars is that allstar games are for allstar
players and are not games meant to recognize participation.
The definition of senior allstar "fun" is competition amongst the best seniors at every position. Again, it is labeled, and always has been labeled, a "senior allstar game". Not a "senior" game.
I don't think that the previous blog comment, "I believe all of those
selected have made some level of commitment to softball beyond the high school season which is key to advancing a player's level of skill" was suggesting play outside of high school as a criteria to allstar selection. But I do believe that the statement was an accurate explanation of why some players are allstar level and why some are not. There are other reasons too but that is a very big reason in high school. Talk to the very highest area athletic achievers and the best will tell you that they practice constantly and work on developing their skill far beyond high school practices and the high school season.
Participation in high school sports in a variety of skill levels is very important, however, allstar selections and trophies should not be automatic and awards for simply participating.
Probably the most important point of all, it's primarily the responsibility of your school to promote their players for allstar selection. If a player was not selected and wonders why, they should take it up with their school to find out what the school did to promote a particular athlete. Wasn't this an issue with a Mayfield player last year too? Someone at Mayfield should ask the school what they did to promote their good Mayfield players.
i had no idea arroyo was in our area. doesnt the tribune report on them?
Miguel, rclancy does have a point about the amount of kids. And believe me, Mayfield has never been as competitive as this year and while you can mostly attribute it to new/good coaching and very good pitching, you have to give a little bit to senior leadership, especially when there was only one that was a major contributer.
I should also say that at least Mayfield plays in Division 5 and they tied for the lead of the Prep League which is way more competitive than the D6 leagues that LaSalle and Maranantha easily dominate and that Alverno usually dominates.
I say its only fair, Mayfield should be represented...at least this year.
Miguel,
Why does the Private team have less players - were there not enough girls able to make the date?
DONT FORGET AUDREY GUILLEN FROM ARROYO!
Sometimes it is a matter of availability or lack of reference from the coach. Is that the case with this kid? Because her numbers were certainly good enough and they do have their numbers on maxpreps. I would invite her.
MS,
come on you are better than that saying that Mayfield's stats weren't on maxpreps, they were there all year. Your argument would have been fine if it was accurate.
MS - Mayfield's stats are complete and accurate on MaxPreps - they have been there all year and have been consistently updated. The Senior for Mayfield is Jackie Najera - she batted .368 with a .422 OBP - certainly respectable enough to earn her a spot in this game.
It is not really an "All-Star" game because only Seniors play. I definitely think all of the area teams should be represented, particularly if they have Seniors who started on the team. What is the harm in having 15 or more girls on the team, this should be a fun event. Mayfield has only 1 Senior on the team who played full-time with Mayfield and she should be included in this event.
I love the public vs. private idea. Why not do that with baseball as well??
MS,
I can assure you that the decision as to who participates in this All-Star game had nothing to do with the girls commitment to playing softball at a higher level. Some girls had already hung-up their cleats and were simply estatic when they got the news.
Mayfield's softball stats are definitely posted on Maxpreps....Poly did not list any of their stats yet Ally Latta is on the team and finished very near the top of the Prep Leagues MVP voting this year! Selection considerations were NOT based on Maxpreps stats.
I agree with you on the celebratory event this game should be. These girls worked HARD to get where they are and no blogger with a computer and a theory can take that away from them!
Anonymous,
Lay off the Haterade.....and get a name!
Not an all-star in my opinion, nor any stats.
This isn't the major leagues. There are too many teams in the area to pick bench warmers on an all star team to make sure each team is represented. And not having stats is a major problem that only the school can be blamed for.
I have no affiliation to Mayfield. I was just asking a question. Even in the MLB all star game one player from each team is represented. Again I will ask... Not one Mayfield player deserves to be on this team?
For Mayfield one senior was an occassional fill-in player and the other senior was not an "allstar" level player. Also, I believe all of those selected have made some level of commitment to softball beyond the high school season which is key to advancing a player's level of skill.
Also, there are no published stats by Mayfield on Maxpreps to give consideration either. Blame yourselves internally and I sure hope you keep it internal rather than pleas on the blog.
I hope this doesn't become another year long discussion by the few complaining about the non-selection of a particular player.
Let's celebrate the players who have been selected and I think the Star news got it right.
This always is a fun event and a great recognition for allstar players and, for other than a very select few, most of them it is the final game of their athletic career. Congradulations to the 30 great senior players who have been selected. It will be fun to see them all on the same field at once.
Am I mistaken but doesn't TC have their team banquet that same night. Does that mean Grant, Vasquez or any other Varsity player not going to be playing in it? Anyone have info on this?
They were at the top of the Prep league for quite a bit of the season. You're telling me not one Mayfield player deserves to be on this team?
Nothing against Mayfield but was the player among the best players in the area? Or do you want her on the team simply because she's a senior? This is an all star game not a senior game.
Mayfield had only 1 senior on the team, and she definitely should be included in this game.
No Mayfield participants? Ouch
