Umpires to decide if game(s) are postponed due to rain
I remember a couple years ago being on assignment with the Angels and covering a rare rain delay at Angel Stadium with the Boston Red Sox in town. We waited a couple hours before the sun finally peaked, and the Red Sox went on to spank the Angels. Nothing new in 2007, if you remember Boston did the same, sweeping the Angels in the American League Divisional Series. We weren't expecting much rain that morning but it sure did come down pouring after I arrived to the stadium.
I'm hoping I don't bring that kind of karma Friday night, the first of two days when teams vie for a CIF-Southern Section Divisional championship in baseball and softball.
Chance of rain is strong Friday, and if we're by the beach chances increase. Long Beach is the site of the CIF-Southern Section Division V championship, pitting Maranatha vs. Woodcrest Chriastian. The game at Blair Field in Long Beach is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. but who knows if the game starts on time with two games preceding.
Rain could potentially postpone the first couple games, thus pushing back the start of the Maranatha game.
According to CIF-Southern Section spokesman Thom Simmons, the game will be played and only delayed and/or postponed if the umpire crew deems it necessary.
"Barring any lightning they'll play in the rain," Simmons said. "It'll be the umpire's call. In the event it's postponed they'll pick up right where they left off (Monday) at the home team's site. If (the) grounds crews deem play is unplayable then we'll defer to them.
"I don't know that it's happened in baseball but it has happened in football."
If the game is pushed back we could see an 8 p.m or 8:30 start.
"We're not going to start at 1 a.m. but we will play it at a reasonable time," Simmons said. "We'll try to get it in as best we can."
In the event the game is postponed, we could see the Division V final being played Monday at Woodcrest Christian. Still no word on the time if we even reach that point. Woodcrest Christian is from Riverside.
Some drizzle is forecast Saturday but I don't anticipate La Salle going through this problem.
Lets hope the game starts on time and there are no delays. But again, stranger things have happened.

Tell you what, once you graduate from high school, finish college, if you’re going and live in the real world for a few years why don’t you come back and we’ll have a educated discussion. Who in their right mind would think a school with about 180 students could go against a school of 1,200 – 1,400 students. That’s why they have different divisions in CIF so schools of different enrollments and abilities and play equally matched schools. That’s all from me for now.

Mr. S Ken Drain led Rio Hondo Prep to a title on the lowest level in 11-man football. If Rio played Muir do you think they'd last more than a quarter? Rio couldn't even beat Maranatha. Covey is a good pitcher but he was just 3-2 after 5 games and lost the 2 games against teams that could actually hit. Remember Rasmusen from Poly? Dominant until he faced real hitting.
Wow, so you’re saying that coaches who’s team went one and out should be considered Coach of the Year over coaches who lead their teams to a championship game or deep into the playoffs like Pasadena Poly, just because they’re in Div 2. If that’s the case sorry to say Ken Drain bring your Coach of the Year award back even though you won a CIF title because your team play in Div XII and not a higher division. Man, your screen name fits you well, “Unbelievable”
All I know is I’ll be in Long Beach tomorrow night cheering on the Minutemen for a CIF Baseball championship Division V as all the other PSN teams sit at home and wait until next year.

The proof of the relative weaknesses in Division 5 programs is that a FIRST YEAR VARSITY team made it to the semi-finals vs MHS!
Mr. S you don't think if Arcadia or Alhambra or Monrovia or San Marino or Temple City or for that matter Pasadena they wouldn't be frontrunners to reach the finals over Maranatha? You can't compare coaches that way because if Maranatha was division 2 they wouldn't even make the playoffs.

To Just Me: It doesn’t matter to MHS if the game was postponed until Monday. When you have two quality pitchers like Covey and Popham either one can take the mound and get the win.
Miguel: In regards to your blog entry on May 27th about Baseball All-Area it’s a no brainier that Brian DeHaan is at the top of the list for Area Coach of the Year. Ya, I know he was Co-Coach last year but for the second year in a row he’s lead his team to a championship game as no other area coach seems to be able to do.

What would make it super interesting is that innings would start over on Monday and both teams would have their best pitchers available and ready to go. At least that's how I understand it, Miguel?
