TC Coach Anthony White: “Your vacation is over!!!”

This one’s for my boy tcchamps …

As promised, I headed over to Temple City High School where the Rams opened camp. Gotta love the green T-shirts the Rams wore during practice: “Why not us?” in reference to Temple City shy of reaching the Mid-Valley Division final. Practice started winding down around 10:30 a.m. with three groups running sprints. As some players trailed the rest TC coach Anthony White wasn’t having it; “Your vacation is over!!!” he yelled. Anyway, there’s not much mystery surrounding the Rams this year, but the one question that remains is: Who will replace QB Morgan Hatch? Temple City returns four of its five offensive linemen from last season, including senior Matt O’Malley. Also returning is the bruising Max Ruckle at running back. That much you already knew. The QB situation is still being sorted out. After all, today was only the first day of practice. White will know more when the team throws on pads Thursday. For now, here’s what I saw … There’s a three-player rotation at quarterback, led by senior Justin Smith. The others are sophomore Calvin Copping and freshman sensation Brandon Cox. Smith appeared to get most of the snaps Monday with Cox and Copping looking on. If the season started today, I would guess Smith would start, Cox is the back-up and Copping the third string, respectively. Cox, however, is more athletic than the two, in my opinion. He’s fast, has height (he’s 6-foot-1) and has played quarterback since pop warner, though he did play running back, too. He was limited to action because of a strain ligament in his left elbow. Still, you can tell the kid’s got some serious raw talent. “I bring a lot of good assets to the team,” said Cox after Monday’s practice. “But I i’m just trying to do what i can to help the team win. I’m really a quarterback but I’ve been wanting to be a quarterback since i was 2. If they need me at receiver i’ll do it. I just want to help the team win. Speed’s one of my advantages; I’m tall and I can leap.” Rams fans will love to read this: Cox said doctors have told him he has a chance to grow to be 6-foot-4.

How you like them apples?

    Thanks Miguel, right on schedule.

I could not make it down today, bummer, missed the 1st day.

Just for the record, the balance of the O-line that returns is – Colin Smith (Cary’s brother)G 230, Derek Lumary (center)225, Justin Sutton T (260). All seniors – and depth is behind them. Sutton, O’Malley and Lumary should see plenty of defensive play as well.

    QB
Justin Smith had a fine JV season, and improved his throwing capability greatly from his freshman year. If you remember at the end of last season, I really had hoped he would return to football, after taking a year off. Luckily, both he and several others came back and are doing great.
    New QB
Happy to have new talent around, especially one who just out of 8th grade, believes he is ready to step out with the varsity squad THIS YEAR.
Young Mr. Cox has some dues to pay before the horns get slapped on his helmet – welcome Brandon.
Going back to what White has said all along – this is not a rebuild year, we intend to win this year!

Miguel – great job, but please update the photo bank…too much 2006!

Don’t get to excited, you sent the same twice. Go with decaf.

  • FB Einstein

Good stuff MM. I wish I could have been at practice too Goldenarm. I haven’t seen M-town since last year but I’m sure they will be as tough as ever. The team that seems to be keeping a low pro is SM. Anyone have the inside on their O-line? I know Mooney and is band of merry men will be ready. I hope TC is undefeated going into that one.

  • Reno Hightower

Now if this dude thinks he can wear white cleats, I might have to check him out. Since when did TC accept out of district players and where did he move into? Open the can of worms and worms come out… be careful what you wish for green and gold.

  • Goldenarm

    Matt,

give me expresso with double caffeine, decaf is like weed without THC

    FB Einstein,
I caught an SM practice before the dead period – MM is on a mission – look for double the aggression of last year’s SM line.

  • Goldenarm

One last word on the QB situation.

Let us remember a new QB needs to learn everything from when to reverse pivot versus open step, what plays he will need to initiate motion on, cadence, the pass routes of EVERY receiver on EVERY pass play, not to mention the entire playbook….
This youngster doesn’t even know his TC locker combination yet and missed all of spring ball, where he could have made enormous progress.

On the other hand, there is always the single wing direct snap offense….just joking

  • Goldenarm

just saw some tape on the kid.
the expression ‘holey moley’ comes to mind.

  • WSGVFan

I have a question and I dont want things to get started off on the wrong foot with TC’s new staff but how are they going to be in gear on Thursday? And if that picture is of this years team? How are they in helmets already? The CIF rule on when to practice is crystal clear. Everyone has 25 allowable practices before their first actual game. School days count as 1 practice opportunity and non-school days count as 2 pracrtice opportunities. Sundays dont count. Just count backwards. TC starts school on September 3. By my math they will be at 23 practices as of August 31st and that is only counting these first 3 days as 1 practice opportunity, when I think CIF says it has to be counted as 2. CIF doesnt care whether you are on the field or not, or whether you have 1 practice a day or 3. School days count for 1 and non-school days count for 2 whether you use them or not. I believe they are in violation of CIF rules by being out there in helmets already and will be in big trouble if they are in full gear by Thursday. They way it looks to me is that they aren’t legally to be in gear until next Thursday, with the 1st three days of practices being used for conditioning. Please someone pass this on to the coaches… the White era is starting about as shaky as the Backus era ended. If I am wrong then feel free to correct me… but if Im right then everyone on this blog knows that they have violated a CIF rule. My opinion… no harm no foul just get them off the field until next week.

  • Mind it

What are you talking about? There are several schools that are suiting up late this week? Why are you singling out TC? Look in your backyard, then state your case.

  • Hater lover

WSGVfan how smart are u to not know the rules then complain about it.

  • MVLHoops

The ONLY way a school can be in pads THIS WEEK is if they have a Week 0 game. Temple City DOES NOT play a game Week 0, so how can they possibly be in full gear this week?

  • Panther

Stop complaining Rosemead High has been in Helmets since Monday and will be in full pads this Thursday for the bull in the ring! Cant wait to hear the click clack! Rosemead got our pads during the dead period. Lets Kick Off

  • Goldenarm

in the rush to get padded up or to get “ahead” of other schools by cramming too much too soon…the biggest worry should not be CIF – IT SHOULD BE INJURY, this is a fact!

    WSGV
that picture is 4 years old, pretty sure that is the 2006 Rams.

I won’t even attempt to try any E=mc2 formula to dispute your 23 days this and 31 days that….to determine some CIF infraction. In the grand scheme of things – does it mean anything? If it does – grab your slide rule and abacus and head for the CIF homeland. I don’t mean that as insult…it is just that everyone, every team, has just fired the primary boosters on their shuttle, and that crap seems like some minor debris as we all leave the atmosphere.

If the new TC staff are a bunch of rule breakin’, CIF mandate violatin’ slimes – it will come back to haunt them. In the meantime, your comment does have a strange undertone to it.

  • tcchamps

    Miguel:

Perhaps you can live blog/twitter/txt/email….. the CIF for a response to WSGVFan concern.

We started on Monday too. ?Que Importa?

    Ah, two a daze…

    - wet grass or wet T-Shirt. Take your choice.
    - dusty dirt or cardboard dry T-Shirt. Take your choice.
    - coach drinking coffeee in the shade barking to you in the sun.
    - jumping into same coache’s ride for 7-11 run with him still in the shade. Fat dude doesn’t move for nobody.
    - fog burning off in middle of nasty ass run drill.
    - helmets too tight. Burnt the roof of my mouth molding the mouth piece; Hot pizza type burn. Fat coach falling asleep in team film meeting.
    - reliving missed assigments over and over again @ night in my bed.

    - Monday: Oh, no!!

  • New York

    Reno,
You forgot the part about diving off the bridge at French Gulch.

  • vicki

If the youngster can (and he CAN) play and win, why not go with a winner. Or be stuck on stupid and have a losing season.

  • Goldenarm

    Reno H

not sure if others had similar – run 5 quarters under 90!
No problem….but the catch phrase was – everyone had to be under 90.
This usually meant we had to fireman carry a couple honkin size 300lb linemen across the last 100 yards. I remember carying and puking simultaineously, by week 2, I had great carry and pule rhythem. Of course if you did not make it under 90, you ran another quarter.

The worst was the bear crawling on top of those weeds, that when dried up and dead, leave nasty 1/4 inch spines scattered among the grass. One of the captains turned to the HC and said “Sir, we will bear crawl 100 miles, the rest of the night whatever, but can we please move down to the dirt area to do it? Coach called him a “pu&*@y and told him to get back in line.

    Everyone kept bear crawling.

We all had those slivers in our palms and fingers for weeks, many weeks. It was no tattoo of toughness, more like stupidity. It was just the result of a little Coach Napaolean dude, who confused the good idea of conditioning with some internal psycho power struggle he was having. Needless to say, team unity was not our strong point that year.

    New Direction

More than allowable practices? Maybe. Recruited transfer in? Probably. Understanding the demographics? Doubt it. Tradition thrown out the window? Definitely. Egg on King’s and VanDeVeere’s face? Priceless!

    Rams Know It All

Stick around for the season or post your 1-800 Therapy phone number.

I’m going to be needing you if darkness falls across the land.

Tradition was one of the things I most liked about TC.
Mooney and Backus were true to it. I saw it evolve in the 70′s under Hitchcock.

Things change, good or bad. Time will render a ruling.

Is this freshman the kid from the Glendale Bears? Are you kidding me?

The kid has game but cmon now this is varsity for Christ sake.

I heard that really good qb from the Panthers -who is just as good as the Glendale kid- is at Muir now and do you think he is gonna start for there varsity?

Stop rushing and let the kids grow first. Sheez!

  • Goldenarm

    Anon

After some delirium I hope people have come to their senses….this is not the second coming of Mims from Palmdale.
Even as a receiver, he needs time to develop and learn, like 99.8% of all freshman do. His future could be an amazing one, because he has natural gifts, obviously. I look forward to seeing him and many other new faces on the football field this year.

Facing the Monrovia or Paraclete pass rush as compared to the Glendale Bears pass rush – are two world’s very far apart. He has not had a chance to learn that fact yet.

Right now, the Rams just need to work on fundamentals and assure they are in the right place when the ball gets snapped. We’re a very young team in need of reps and scrimmage time.

  • RHP83

TC and USC alumni Desmond Reed also played Varsity as a freshman. So did Monrovia 2009 Graduate Kendall Boggs.
If Cox is ready for Varsity, Coach White will put him there. If not, the kid will probaly be on JV.
The season still has not started, so let Coach White watch and evaluate this kid and make the call.

  • Observantcat

Joshiah Thropay attempted just 8 or so passes as a true freshman at Monrovia and 2 of those went for TD’s. Maturity is the key factor, Having watched Josiah play with the Duarte Hawkes and lead that team to the Pop Warner superbowl you would have to take into account his teamates Jordan Canada, Brandon Golden, Adam Muemma, Leon Youngblood, etc….. now working with these kind of athletes will either force you to become a great leader or you may decide to let the next man lead. Give his a chance on the varsity and see what he is made of. Only time will tell. Great QB’s make great offense, but he must suround himself with good athletes to really stand out.

Hey know it all why are you still stuck in the 70′s? that was 40 years ago. It is true Backus and Mooney were old TC coaches but we have a new coach now and from the looks sounds and feel of everything we are right on track with the tradition of being respectable on the field. and if lining up in the wishbone hitchcock is what you want maybe you should beg him to come out of his 10 year retirement and join the staff, because the season is about to start. and in my opinion king and vandeveere have done what no one thought they could have done and that is hire a great staff, get kids back on the field that quit because of backus and other reasons, and set us up for the season. where have you been know it all? the only egg on anyones face is on yours guess u dont know it all. keep up the great work MM, TC and the RHL is one of the better stories to follow in years

  • interested observer

Thanks to all you bloggers for your insight whether it be intelligent or incredibly stupid!! I have coached high school sports for many many years so I think I have a pretty good idea of how things work. This my first blog so be nice to me!!
First off is the idea of freshman playing varsity. If the parent who must sign a release to play varsity feel that their son is mature enough to play so be it! Who are we to question it. Some of these blogs sound like these kids are coming in and starting. I am sure some can but all have to adjust to the new system, speed of the game etc. If the kid can play I wouldn’t have a problem with it. I’d love to have a 4 year letterman rather than a 2 or 3 year guy!
Next is C.i.F. rules violation. I just read the bluebook and its alittle confusing on counting backwards from your first game and the maximum allowable practice opportunities Huh!!!! I think there are alot of schools in the southern section in violation but say nothing. And why is everyone picking on Temple City?????? What have they done in the last 30 or so years to have so much scrutiny. In regards to recruiting I think things can be alittle sticky here. If you were to change the scenario to academics you might understand a whole lot better. If your local public school had poor test scores or other types of problems would you want to send your kids there?? I think not. You will try to find the best situation for your child. Private school may be cost prohibitive so maybe you use grandma’s address or try to get a permit. If you are not looking out for the best interest of your son or daughter you’re not a very good parent!! But if its athletics people send up the red flag and say they are recruiting. Can a parent also look for a good athletic program?? To some of you I guess not. Don’t get me wrong I don’t like it when a player is flat out recruited by some other coach or their network of friends. But if the kid doesn’t want to play for my program I really haven’t lost anything right??? Thats it for now, sorry for the lengthy blog.

  • Sadtitan

for San Marino, our Asst. Principal Mooney who I think is our OL coach or Offensive coordinator and the head Coach Mooreland recruited William Do’s little brother from the Rams last year Who played on the JV and now we have some players that showed up from Muir high school during the summer. San Marino , Arcadia and Temple city all have remarkable academics and I cannot blame parents for wanting their children to get a top notch education for free especially in this economy.

omg many of the responses individuals make are kinda silly, every now and then i contemplate whether they in truth read the posts and content before leaving your 2 cents or if perhaps they only look at the title of the post and compose the initial thought that pops into their heads. anyhow, it is actually good to read through clever commentary every now and then in contrast to the very same, old oppinion vomit which i quite often discover on the net
