From Week 0 to Week 10, the Must-See games in 2009

WEEK 0: Arcadia at Monrovia, Sept. 4
Monrovia got off to a horrendous start last year, though things did pan out for the Wildcats in the end. Arcadia hopes to keep season-opening momentum going the rest of the year.

Prediction: Monrovia

WEEK 1: Maranatha at La Salle, Sept. 11
Last year’s epic battle is renewed as both teams test their new quarterbacks in what promises to be yet another showdown. No truth to rumors of building a wall to separate La Salle fans from Maranatha’s.

Prediction: Maranatha

WEEK 2: Rosemead at Monrovia, Sept. 18
The Wildcats will have vengeance on their mind when they take on the Panthers, which ousted Monrovia in last year’s semifinals of the CIF-Southern Section Mid-Valley Division playoffs. Rosemead QB Matt Macias vs. Monrovia QB Nick Bueno will be fun to watch. Lets see who out runs who.

Prediction: Monrovia

WEEK 3: Temple City at Arcadia, Sept. 25
Randy Backus spent 14 years at Temple City but he’ll be wearing cardinal and gold when his Apaches take on the rookie Anthony White and the Temple City Rams. “Brawl for the Mall” … uh, yeah, real clever. Who came up with that?…

Prediction: Temple City

WEEK 4: Temple City at Rosemead, Oct. 2
Last year’s Mid-Valley Division championship game that never happened, thanks to our friends in the desert. Perhaps a preview of this year’s final?

Prediction: Rosemead

WEEK 5: La Salle at Temple City or Rosemead at South Hills, Oct. 9
La Salle beefed up its schedule considerably and it’ll only help the Lancers in the long run. Still, Rams run away in the second half.

Prediction: Temple City

WEEK 6: Arcadia at Muir, Oct. 16
The Apaches had a tough time handling the Mustangs’ speed last year. Things are not as even but Arcadia will compete and give Muir a run for its money.

Prediction: Muir

WEEK 7: Monrovia at Temple City, Oct. 23
A shot at the Rio Hondo League championship will be on the line when the WSGV’s two best offensive line meet. Monrovia’s core of returning players at key positions will propel the Wildcats to a victory.

Prediction: Monrovia

WEEK 8: Alhambra at San Gabriel, Oct. 30
The Almont League’s two best quarterbacks clash when Darrian Cazarin leads the Moors against Isaac Valdez and the Matadors. Alhambra came away with a 30-14 victory courtesy of a surprise rushing attack. The Moors offensive prowess again will overwhelm San Gabriel.

Prediction: Alhambra

WEEK 9: St. Francis at Alemany, Nov. 6
The Dietrich Riley show continues. This could be a make-or-break game for the Knights who hope to secure a playoff berth with a victory.

Prediction: St. Francis

WEEK 10: Muir vs. Pasadena at Rose Bowl, Nov. 13
The Turkey Tussle won’t be as lopsided this year, though the Mustangs figure to be the odds on favorite to win, again.

Prediction: Muir

    Miguel,

You picked Monrovia last year and it was an Arcadia victory. Be careful picking against Arcadia in the 1st game of the season, that is where they are strongest (depth issues hit after a couple games). I’m not necessarily calling an Arcadia victory, just a caution.

The Arcadia-TC game is going to be heart-pounding. I am so excited for his game to be back.

  • Anonymous

Apache Joe, everyone in America had Monrovia to win that game last year, but no one expected the enormous amount of distractions that took place by the beggining of the summer. This is a whole new year and Coach Maddox has a year under his belt with his players, this should be a breakout for slot of the players you”ll see for years to come. I will be interesting how Arcadia fares in the Pacific League. I”ll Take Bueno’s leadership & athletisism over Tuck any day of the week.

  • !stang!

Is it just me or does tc/monrovia have a game every other week?

  • The Lancer

That looks like a Lancer practice shirt. Week 1, enough said!!! Ohhh and Goldenarm you better believe I will be seeing you on Week 5!

  • Goldenarm

    BIG OPENERS
    diamond ranch v muir
tc v arroyo (opener 9/11 – it will be heated!)
    monrovia v arcadia

    DOWN THE ROAD…interesting
    monrovia v san dimas
    rosemead v harvard westlake
    phs v burroughs
    sf v arcadia
    la canada v crescenta valley

PHS has a tough preleague, san marino again only marginally challenging, muir- yow, SoPas, someday it will toughen

Here are a few more “Must-see” games…some better than the games chosen above.

    Week 0:

Muir vs. Diamond Ranch (3rd game in 2 years, WSGV power vs. CIF Finalist….great game!)

SG vs. Cathedral (pass happy offense vs…pass happy offense)

Alhambra vs. Roosevelt (as much “anticipation” as the Moors have, it’ll be interesting to see how they perform against an average team from the city)

TC vs. Arroyo (this long-standing opener means a lot to both of these schools and I hear it can get pretty physical)

Blair vs. St. Margaret’s (only because I MUST SEE how bad this can possibly get)

    Week 1:

Arcadia vs. SF (Apaches won this game two years ago…doubt that they can do it this year, nontheless a really good local game)

Muir vs. Oaks Christian (I know, I know…but anytime a good local team takes on a state or national power it is must-see to me, if only to see how good they really are)

    Week 2:

Maranathaa vs. Bakersfield Christian (The Natha’s toughest regular season game BY FAR! BC is a pretty damn good program who played against Oaks Christian last year and just graduated David Carr’s little brother who is going to Fresno St. as well)

Muir vs. Venice (a pretty good City team will be looking for revenge against the Stangs)

    Week 3:

SF vs. Burroughs (tough, physical match-up)

    Week 4:

Muir vs. Burroughs (STRAIGHT out of the gate for the Pacific League title….this should be played later in the season)

    Week 5:

PHS vs. Arcadia (Arcadia has just as long a streak against the Dogs as Muir…can McFarland’s crew end it?)

SM vs. SG (two programs that are evenly matched and are usually in the PSN Top Ten)

    Week 6:

Alhambra vs. Schurr (most likely for the Almont League title)

SF vs ND (see Muir vs. OC in Week 1)

Arrroyo vs. Rosemead (for all the marbles in the MVL)

    Week 7:

SF vs. Loyola (as lopsided as the Turkey Tussle, but still a strong rivalry)

    Week 8:

SG vs. Alhambra (NO love lost between these two rivals)

  • The Stang Fan

    My bad…that’s me below.

  • Just wondering

This is a question for Anonymous
Since when does TEAM have an I in it? I don’t doubt that Bueno is a good athlete but he is not the only one out on the Football field playing. I do believe it will be the leadership an athleticism of the whole team that will win them games. If I understand this right, it takes a good line to help out there quarterback if not he would have a hard time making a play if the other team was getting through. This is just my observation. Good luck to all of the Monrovia Football Players. Have a great year.

  • curiousgoerge

    Stang!

The Moors have every reason to anticipate playing
an “ABOVE” avg. city team in L.A. Roosevelt.
    There record 5-1 league/ 10-3 overall/
made it to the semi-finals in the playoff’s.
Like I said, they have their whole team returning
according to neighborhood sources, they have a couple
D1 prospects OL/DL I believe one of them getting offer’s from USC and Oregon.
Far from AVERAGE city team, it’ll be a tough test for the Moor’s and YES we are anticipating a great ball game, hopefully!

  • burbanksports

    Stang Fan!
You got the Pacific Title game right.
Don’t get too nervous when Burbank routs San Gabriel before starting league play.

  • Apache Joe

    Anonymous,

Everyone in America? I doubt that highly.

I picked Arcadia to win it. This year I’m not making my decision until I see Arcadia practice (which I need to try to get out to one).

  • The Stang Fan

    burbanksports,

Long time no see bro! Uh…no…SG getting blown out by Burbank doesn’t scare me in the LEAST! Btw, who do you have winning the Muir/Burroughs matchup?

    cg,

L.A. Roosevelt is the definition of an average City team. Their pre-season schedule is WEAK. They play in one of worst leagues in the city (Eastern). And they don’t even play in the City 4A playoff bracket, where ALL the best city teams compete…rather, they CHOOSE to stay in the weak 3A playoff bracket. The only two decent teams they played, Torrey Pines and Garfield, beat the crap out of them.

    Again…a VERY AVERAGE city team.

  • MoneyTalks

Arcadia v Monrovia is a coin flip. The problem for arcadia is going to be containing Bueno. Arcadia’s defense ends have always had a difficult time keeping contain or being in position for cut backs.

  • MoneyTalks

I watched that Bueno highlight film a hand full of times on youtube… He reminds me of Forrest Elder the former Muir QB in 2004 that lead Muir to a ‘W’ against arcadia.

  • burbanksports

    Stang-
I’ll have to wait and make a game time pick for the Muir/JBHS game. Muir has that killer non-league schedule which continues to set them apart from the rest of the Pacific. If the Stangs come through that injury free, it’s hard not to pick them.

  • Elias Buckwalter

Who came up with the “Brawl for the Mall?” uh we thought you did Miguel…

  • Other stang fan

Miguel, are you on La Salle’s payroll? They get toooooo
much pub for a small school one win program.

  • papa d

loyola vs. sf should b the game of the year and u dont have it in the top ten

  • curiousgoerge

    Mr. Stang Fan,

    Your absolutely right!
L.A. ROOSEVELT is the TRUE definition of an AVERAGE
city team. It would be a shame if we lost to a team who plays in such a WEAK league as the EASTERN, right! RIGHT
Funny thing about all them facts your kicking is that
MUIR lost to an AVERAGE team from that league a year
    before last to FRANKLIN???
So yeah your right hopefully we don’t do that!
We wouldn’t want to lose to such an AVERAGE city team!Ha
Hopefully the STANGS don’t lose to an avg 4a city team
    in VENUS, right?

  • The Lancer

    Other Stang Fan,
How is one article on La Salle too much PUB. Don’t try to come down on our little school because for once we got some attention. Look back what other PUB did we get…Get over yourself. Do you have to constantly bring up one win, I thought we were all looking in the future now. It’s a new season and they have a lot going on over there, sorry we dont play Oaks Christian, oh wait there in our division.

  • goteamgo

I always thought the Star News was on Maranatha’s payroll.

  • curious

goteamgo, why such the big hater for the Natha?

  • goteamgo

Not a hater, but responding to comment by Other Stang Fan below – I think back to May/June when the Star News appeared to be the Maranatha school newspaper, even getting a story (6/4) basically called “why do people pick on Maranatha.” Using it as a point of comparison to respond.

  • The Stang Fan

    cg,

You are ABSOLUTELY right! Muir did lose to a VERY AVERAGE City team from the WEAK Eastern league a couple of years ago. That was one of the school’s worst losses in the last 20 years….ESPECIALLY considering we smacked them at their house the year before AND we were up by 20 at halftime the year they beat us. Easily, one of the most EMBARASSING losses in a LONG time. But facts are facts, they are still an AVERAGE city team…just like Roosevelt.

Venice is a MUCH better City team than Franklin ever has been or will be and we will be looking forward to making it two victories in a row against them this year.

    papa d,

I’m interested to know why you think SF has such a good shot against Loyola this year. Just curious.

    Money talks,

Forrest was quite an exciting and dangerous QB…and FUN to watch. True competitor!

    burbanksports,

I hear ya. It should be a good game, but I see the Stangs coming out on top once again, because of their line and the tough pre-season, as you mentioned.

  • Lack of Creativity

    Hey Miguel,

By the way you worded it, I take it you think the moniker “Brawl for the Mall” is weak or doesn’t suit your standards of what is creative. Well then why don’t you give us your idea of what it should be called? Or, come up with one for the Arcadia/Monrovia match-up.

Oh, wait a minute… That would require creativity!

Like I always say…”Don’t knock what you can’t do!”

  • curiousgoerge

    Stangfan,

Anytime A CIF team goes against a city team,
    especially an SGV team,
I will always pull for the CIF team, ya dig!
So go Moors and Mustangs, SGV represent!

  • Miguel Melendez

    Lack of Creativity:

    great comeback … LOL!!

  • bigfatfan

SP starts practicing tomorrow (thursday). their first game is Sept. 11th.

  • New York

Is there any type of “trophy” at stake in the Monrovia-Arcadia game? Is there a bell involved?

  • The Stang Fan

    cg,

THERE is something we can agree on bro!

  • tcchamps

    New York:

Yes, it’s called “The Bleeders Cup”

  • Lack of Creativity

    Miguel,

    Great response! LOL

    Thanks for proving my point!!

  • New York

    TCChamps,

That was witty. You should help Miguel with that the Lack of Creativity guy.

  • tcchamps

    New York:

Yeah, thought it was better than the Colorado Belle. When we do intersquads here in TC we call it the Brawl for the Bridal Shop.

  • Hal Lamaster

I remember watching Cleo Bates play. Very good back.
