Danny Beckwith targets playoff nemesis: St. Margaret’s

ST. MARGARET’S FOILED TITLE HOPES FOR MARANATHA IN PAST THREE YEARS

By Miguel A. Melendez, Staff Writer

It was a cold December night. The rain showed no signs of letting up.

Nobody expected the harsh conditions would prove to be a bad omen for the Maranatha High School football team playing in its first CIF-Southern Section Division XIII championship game against St. Margaret’s.

What should have been a glorious Saturday night for the Minutemen nearly three years ago was the beginning of agony and defeat.

That it came on the last play of the game against a would-be nemesis only made the loss that much more difficult to swallow.

Danny Beckwith, only a freshman at the time and brought up to varsity during Maranatha’s late run, remembers that game as if it happened yesterday.

He handled the loss with poise, despite a sting that lingers to this day.

But it was necessary for Beckwith to learn from it and move on.

He has but hasn’t moved on.

UPDATED: La Caada/Alhambra ruled “no-contest” per CIF-SS; Rio Hondo Prep/Kilpatrick game canceled.

*UPDATED 2:24 p.m.* Rob Wigod, CIF-SS assistant commissioner in charge of football, said the La Caada/Alhambra game has been ruled a “no-contest.”

“Bottom line, we’re not going to award a victory or give someone a loss when it’s beyond the school’s control,” Wigod said. The Week 1 game between LC and Alhambra was canceled because the Spartans did not meet the minimum 10 days of mandatory practice. Reason? Poor air quality from the Station Fire.

“The Rio Hondo-Kilpatrick game, now thas’ a little different,” Wigod said. “That’s considered a forfeit victory for Rio Hondo Prep.”

<========================>

*WEDNESDAY (12:01 p.m.)* If it’s not one thing, it’s something else, right?

Rio Hondo Prep football coach Ken Drain confirmed Kilpatrick forfeited Friday night’s game against the Kares after a riot involving football players erupted at Kilptrick.

According to Drain, all but seven players from JV and varsity were suspended, thus giving Rio Hondo Prep (2-0) a forfeit victory.

Kilpatrick AD Donald Freeman confirmed the forfeit, adding the riot took place Saturday.

“I can’t tell you more beyond what I’ve told you,” Freeman said.

Kilpatrick, a juvenile school under the control of the Los Angeles Court Schools, houses its students.

Drain, also the school’s athletic director, said he tried to schedule another team before the Week 2 showdown against Brentwood next week, but to no avail.

….Star Picks….Can I get a second take, please?

The Stang Fan: 7-3
Melendez: 4-6

A week late, I know. Much like the rest of the WSGV, I wish I had another crack at picking last week’s winners, which weren’t all that much better than my atrocious start last year. While I got a chance to catch both Monrovia/Arcadia and Diamond Ranch/Muir, I’m sad to say I won’t get a similar chance this week. There’s a lot of hype surrounding Arroyo, which hosts Temple City on Friday night. The Anthony White era begins amid question marks at key positions, including QB. Then you have the La Salle/Maranatha showdown. Last year’s epic battle will be hard to match, but you just never know what will happen in what’s becoming a true crosstown rivalry. It’s hard to choose, really. Minutemen or Lancers? In-N-Out or tri-tip? I know, I know, I’d go with In-N-Out any day, too. As far as the game itself? Well, that’s hard to gauge. Maranatha led through the fourth quarter until it self-destructed after surrendering two late touchdowns. Is it a matter of new QB Cody Keith (14 of 35, 168 yards, 1 TD, 3 INT’s) having first-game jitters playing in warm Southern California, Keith still getting used to new teammates or simply a poorly executed game by the Minutemen? Bad luck? Maybe. Linfield Christian got a lucky bounce to score its first points of the game, coming in the third quarter. Quarterback Justin Carter threw to Austin Maranville for a 26-yard gain before he was stripped of the ball by a Minuteman defender. However, Linfield Christian’s Brandon Blake scooped up the ball and ran in the remaining 28 yards for the score. Not making excuses for our boys at Saint John Ave., but sometimes you just don’t get the bounces to go your way, and the Minutemen did have a valiant effort on the defensive end with Josh Jones’ two INT’s and Brandon Wilson and Chris Cornell each adding apiece. Meanwhile, La Salle needed a Marcus Well to score a late TD and recover a fumble with 1:19 to play to stop a last-minute Village Christian drive. The air quality won’t affect team practices, so lets hope we get the best of how these teams can play, and the guess here is when it’s all said and done, Maranatha comes out on top.
