The Stang Fan: 7-3
Melendez: 4-6

A week late, I know. Much like the rest of the WSGV, I wish I had another crack at picking last week's winners, which weren't all that much better than my atrocious start last year. While I got a chance to catch both Monrovia/Arcadia and Diamond Ranch/Muir, I'm sad to say I won't get a similar chance this week. There's a lot of hype surrounding Arroyo, which hosts Temple City on Friday night. The Anthony White era begins amid question marks at key positions, including QB. Then you have the La Salle/Maranatha showdown. Last year's epic battle will be hard to match, but you just never know what will happen in what's becoming a true crosstown rivalry. It's hard to choose, really. Minutemen or Lancers? In-N-Out or tri-tip? I know, I know, I'd go with In-N-Out any day, too. As far as the game itself? Well, that's hard to gauge. Maranatha led through the fourth quarter until it self-destructed after surrendering two late touchdowns. Is it a matter of new QB Cody Keith (14 of 35, 168 yards, 1 TD, 3 INT's) having first-game jitters playing in warm Southern California, Keith still getting used to new teammates or simply a poorly executed game by the Minutemen? Bad luck? Maybe. Linfield Christian got a lucky bounce to score its first points of the game, coming in the third quarter. Quarterback Justin Carter threw to Austin Maranville for a 26-yard gain before he was stripped of the ball by a Minuteman defender. However, Linfield Christian's Brandon Blake scooped up the ball and ran in the remaining 28 yards for the score. Not making excuses for our boys at Saint John Ave., but sometimes you just don't get the bounces to go your way, and the Minutemen did have a valiant effort on the defensive end with Josh Jones' two INT's and Brandon Wilson and Chris Cornell each adding apiece. Meanwhile, La Salle needed a Marcus Well to score a late TD and recover a fumble with 1:19 to play to stop a last-minute Village Christian drive. The air quality won't affect team practices, so lets hope we get the best of how these teams can play, and the guess here is when it's all said and done, Maranatha comes out on top.

Get ready! We got rid of the stupid helmets so we're ready to roll.
No shame in our 17-14 loss to Chaminade tonight or in your loss to OC.
If Muir had Chaminade's kicker, the 'Stangs would win it all. A good snap, good hold and that kid can hit from 50 with ease.

MM,

Write me down for Saugus over the dogs and Workman over Keppel as well.

I love more Burbank Dogs on the blog too. Hell, they're much better than the other dogs in the Pacific.

Burbanksports, I LOVE your enthusiasm this year. You guys are going to NEED it!

burbanksports said:

I like that...another Burbank 'Dog in the blog. Not only did Burbank have the best baseball player in the Pacific (Stanford bound) it looks like they might have the best defensive player in the Pacific and possibly the best running game in the Pacific. Could also have the Coach of the Year even though it's his first year.
Looking forward to October 9th.

Knight10,

Listen I know you got a doozy of a game against arcadia, but in terms of best football game and most exciting game. La Salle vs. Maranatha is head and shoulders above all the other games. I mean really you have already come on here and completely belittled the players at La Salle and Maranatha, stop blogging for a while and go play your games. I mean this should be your senior year, dont worry so much about La Salle and Maranatha.

Knight10 said:

Just because its a close game doesn't mean its a good game to watch. Its a good rivalry and they are close in location. But the level of play will be significantly lower than some other games being played

Thank you for adding the flintridge vs st gens game. its much appreciated

35-14 is a little kind.

The Stangs won't be at full strength for a few more weeks. Friday is going to be a long night brother.

Miguel,

what about Flintridge Prep vs St. Gens? Why no flintridge prep prediction. they are in the area too.

Oc wins 35 - 14. Unless muir can stop the running game then I think it will be a lot closer.

Goldenarm said:

I'm glad TC / Arroyo is not the "game of the week".

Last season Miguel had a black cat bone or some ancient "Arona" hispanic curse mojo in his suit pocket when he came to TC as "game of the week" dude. Maybe it was a suit he borrowed from FJR at the last minute, I don't know. I am pretty sure my friend Galetti did not leave any Ram curses in the old PSN office for Miquel to pick up.

Miguel was at AHS when we lost with 2:16 in the 4th, was there when the Mead and Sumler steamrollered us at home. He did however, see a tremendous half of Ram football when we faced the eventual CIF champion Paraclete. He even penned a pretty solid account of the game afterward....noting the roars and insanity of the extreme underdog Ram crowd packed into the stands.

Actually the losses and blame lie in early season poor execution, the pains of team evolution and good coaching via the "go with what is working"... not what we thought would work in the spring technique. We got better...old history.

The bottom line this season and it is a scary one...one which the clever Stang Fan just alluded to.

Arroyo knows what they are doing.
The unanswered question is whether TC, a CIF semi-finalist last year, knows what they are doing.

Good luck Coaches...
White, Sumida, Mondo, Prado, McKay, Chou, the linebacker dude, the db dude, Lopez, Camerano, Cable and the other 6 or 7 names I will find in the program tomorrow....hard work pays off!!
Go Rams!

THE TC V. ARROYO GAME WILL DEFINETLY BE THE GAME TO WATCH FRIDAY NIGHT. IF ARROYO WAS IN THE PSN COVERAGE AREA THEY WOULD BE IN THE TOP 10 FOR SURE. HAVIN SAID THAT U WOULD HAVE TWO TOP 10 TEAMS GOING AT IT, POSSIBLY EVEN TWO TOP 5 TEAMS. WOULDN'T YOU RATHER SEE THAT THEN SEE A SINGLE TOP TEN TEAM PLAYING?

The Stang Fan said:

7-3...not bad. I REALLY wanted to go with La Salle too. Oh well. Btw, I don't get any extra points for going against my Stangs when you, Robledo, and Ramirez all picked them to beat DR? Well, maybe not. I guess I was privy to a little "inside info." Anyhow, here are my Week 1 picks:

The Natha vs. La Salle- LS (confidence from last week's win combined with home-field advantage = win)

SF vs. Arcadia- SF (say hello to your new PSN #1 team)

TC vs. Arroyo- Arroyo (Arroyo KNOWS what they have...does TC?)

Monrovia vs. Duarte- M-town (say hello to your new PSN #2 team)

Covina at The Mead- Covina (The Mead is searching for their new identity, Covina seems to comfortable with theirs)

Gabby at SM- SM (Considering Gabby lost to LP last week, and it wasn't close, I'll take the San Marino Mooney's...uhhhh, Titans)

SG at SP- SG (Not even CLOSE to being convinced about the Tigers, and SG has a game under their belt already)

Kilkpatrick vs. RHP- Cancelled (I think the winner might be the TSA security hired for this game....now they don't have to show up! Seriously, RHP deserves props for scheduling the Mustangs, and to all the boys locked up....SETTLE THE HELL DOWN IN THERE!)

Marshall vs. Salesian- Salesian (If the Eagles were playing the Boys and Girls Club, I'd STILL pick Marshall to lose)

Blair vs. Bosco Tech- BT (See the Marshall game above)

Muir vs. OC- OC (Just make EVERY play count fellas...cuzz it's gonna be a loooooooong evening!)

King said:

Why shouldn't La Salle v Natha be game of the week? Pop-Warner game...really? This could very well be the closest game in the area this week. The only other game that might be good enough for GOTW wouldbe TC v Arroyo. All the other games won't be close.

The Lancer said:

Knight10,
First off grow up, Pop Warner, come on. I will let that go because you are obviously only 17 or 18...Knight2010...Hard to pass up this game, considering last year was the best game of the year, but keep the crap talking going, just adds fuel to the fire!!!

Knight10 said:

Why is the La Salle game Game of the Week. That game is gonna look like a pop-warner game. Theres gotta be better games out there this week.

Miguel Melendez said:

King: LOL, I'll get there early and enjoy the tri-tip. It'll be myself and our ace photographer. I'll update the record. That was my bad.

King said:

Miguel-

I have heard grumblings about working out some type of VIP parking for the PSN staff, I'm sure all you gotta do is flash your badge and they'll be putting you in Center Field, just a few steps from the field. I'll see what I can do you for buddy.

PS. I think you have LS record mixed up 1-1? OR is that just your prediction of their record for after the game?

Miguel Melendez said:

King, any truth to rumors I have a spot reserved for my BMW 645i?

King said:

LS v The Natha is going to be another great game. This one could very well come down to special teams and the kicking game. Get there early if you plan on finding parking or a place to sit, things could get tight!

Paul Finchamp said:

Miguel--

The Rio Hondo Prep v. Kilpatrick game has been cancelled as Kilpatrick had some sort of problem last week resulting in just a handful of the remaining players being eligible to play. Kilpatrick forfeits.
