Friday Night Aftermath: St. Francis fumbles one away to Notre Dame, 28-24; Monrovia escapes San Marino, 14-12; Maranatha and Rio Hondo Prep win big in league action.

Notre Dame 28, St. Francis 24 — An impressive showing for St. Francis despite the loss. They were eight yards away. EIGHT YARDS!!! But a fumble inside the Notre Dame 10 was recovered by the visiting Knights who escaped with the win. It was a packed house and the game was not as advertised — Almost everyone pegged Notre Dame winning, and winning big. Not so. St. Francis led 14-0 at the half, led by Dietrich Riley who intercepted a pass in the first quarter and returned it 60 yards for a score. He intercepted Notre Dame QB Ryan Kasdorf’s fourth pass of the game. St. Francis was rockin and rollin until the second half came, particularly the fourth quarter. Notre Dame’s first lead of the game came on a 2-yard run by the unstoppable Kenneth Boggs. He rushed for a 2-yard score to give Notre Dame a 24-21 lead. Notre Dame put the final nail in the coffin when Kasdorf took off for a 10-yard score with 3:49 left in the fourth quarter. On that scoring drive, Kasdorf and Boggs escaped from tackles in the backfield. If St. Francis makes those tackles we’d be celebrating a St. Francis win and I’d be enjoying lunch next week courtesy of another reporter. But alas, Notre Dame took advantage of a Justin Posthuma fumble inside the Notre Dame 10 to earn the win. Posthuma completed 18 of 25 passes for 218 yards and he rushed for 102 yards and one touchdown. That one fumble really bothered him after the game. His head hung while St. Francis coach Jim Bonds consoled him immediately after the game. Regardless, this was an awesome game to watch, and the standing-room only crowd proved it.

Monrovia 14, San Marino 12 — The Wildcats offense was not firing on all cylinders. The running game controlled the ball but they just couldn’t score. Monrovia’s defense came up huge, led by senior linebacker Josh Lowden. San Marino defensive game plan worked effectively and Monrovia couldn’t find a way to adjust. Monrovia seemed a little rusty and they didn’t make any in-game adjustments, allowing San Marino to stay within striking distance. The San Marino offense was patient and executed, but in the end Monrovia’s was just enough to earn the win. Lowden was the star of the game. He had a couple huge tackles for a loss and a sack. Ellis McCarthy also had a sack and pressured San Marino QB Joe Forgatch to force an incomplete pass on a two-point conversion in the final two minutes.

Muir 27, Arcadia 7 — The Muir defense came up big. They had five interceptions, including two that were returned for interceptions. Muir’s offense, however, stunk the place up. They couldn’t run or throw the ball. Jarron Williams completed 5 of 10 passes for 30 yards. Ouch. Arcadia had 155 on offense to Muir’s 106 and were still down at the half, 20-0.

Maranatha 27, Brentwood 7 — The Minutemen were led by running back Erik Johnson who rushed for 124 yards on 24 carries. He was like Steve Nash, setting up the Maranatha offense. Quarterback Cody Keith completed 7 of 12 passes for 90 yards and one touchdown over the air and one on the ground. This was a big win for the Minutemen who are 3-0 in Alpha League play.

Schurr 28, Alhambra 21 — There was no stopping Schurr wide receiver Carlos Arrendondo who had 11 catches for 135 yards and three touchdowns. Make that 5 out of 6 wins for the Spartans.

South Pasadena 27, Blair 20 — The Tigers (2-4, 1-0) built up a comfortable 20-0 lead going into halftime. But they were hit with an injury to quarterback Conor Bednarski before the end of the second quarter. Second-string QB Andrew Molina came in for his first rookie start. But the Tigers lost momentum and couldn’t contain Blair’s homecoming spirit. The Vikings scored back-to-back touchdowns in the third quarter to make it 20-12. The Tigers’ Matthew Nelson scored the longest touchdown of the night with a 57-yard reception from Molina with 10 seconds to go in the third. “It’s a cliche, but that was an ugly win,” South Pasadena coach Edward Smith said. “We came out with a ‘W’ and have a two-game winning streak.” South Pasadena’s head trainer, Tamar Berberian, said Bednarski has a right-knee sprain after getting hit by a helmet

Gladstone 40, Duarte 14 — It’ll be easier for Duarte next week as a much-needed bye approaches.

Gabrielino 21, El Monte 14 — The Eagles earned their first second win of the season. Gabrielino (2-4, 1-0) jumped out to a 7-0 lead when Oscar Rivas took a handoff 55 yards for the score on the third play of scrimmage. After an El Monte (0-6, 0-1) punt, the Eagles drove 85 yards on 15 plays, capped by a Joshua Acosta 10-yard touchdown run, to push the lead to 14 midway through the first quarter.

San Gabriel 21, Keppel 7 — Capitalizing on miscues by its opponent and Fabian Amaro’s two touchdowns propelled the visiting Matador in the Almont League opener. With the game knotted at 7-7 early in the third quarter, the Matadors (3-3, 1-0) had quarterback Isaac Valdez hit receiver Mark Covarrubias on the last three plays of the first series of the second half. Valdez connected on passes of 30, 27 and finally, a 13-yard strike to Covarrubias. That gave San Gabriel a 13-7 lead. It concluded a nine-play, 70- yard drive. On the night, Valdez was 13-for-19 for 139 yards with an interception.

Arroyo 14, Rosemead 12 — Arroyo held off a late fourth-quarter rally to defeat the Panthers. Rosemead had a chance to tie the game with 3:28 left, but Mike Amaya broke up a two-point conversion pass attempt and the Knights (4-2) hung on for the win. The Knights offense struggled early but took advantage of a turnover to score late in the first quarter. Amaya grabbed an errant lateral at the Panthers 13-yard line with 4:51 left in the first quarter. After a penalty, Steven Rivera hit Mikey Vasquez on a swing pass for an 18-yard touchdown.

Rio Hondo Prep 48, Flintridge Prep 0 — Quarterback Chris Llamas passed for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Kares dropped the Rebels to 1-4 on the season. Rio Hondo Prep was just too good, scoring in its first five possessions to build a big lead.

Mary Star 28, Bosco Tech 13 — Mary Star of the Sea High School found the holes in the Don Bosco Tech defense Friday night. The Stars scored on three long plays, two in the second half, to knock off the Tigers 28-13 in the Camino Real League opener for both teams at Daniels Field in San Pedro. “Those three big runs just killed us,” Bosco Tech head coach Chris Shockley said.

Calvary Chapel 55, Marshall 15 — The Eagles got banged up and the Grizzlies took advantage in an Alpha League game on Friday night. Quarterback Salvador Murillo went down in the third quarter, and the Eagles also lost two key linebackers. “Injuries cost us the game,” Marshall head coach Ricky Pickens said. “We lost a lot of key guys.” Murillo completed a 70- yard touchdown pass to Jessie Wright. But when Murillo went down, Pickens went to Aaron Shanklin, who hadn’t played the position at all this season.

Unfortunately for SF fans it’s going to be along night. The Knights don’t have as many athletes or the team speed that ND has. 42-17 ND

Have you lost faith in Maranatha? Just because of the slow start they had? This team will beat Brentwood tonight with some big payback for last year!
A win tonight should put them back in the top 10 for good and make them the front runner for the Alpha Title.
It’s clear that you have not seen them play since they lost the first two games of the year that they clearly should have won. They are a different team now and have beaten tougher teams then the first two they faced.
    Go Minutemen!!

  • Mike Collins

Would have like to seen Maranatha play Rio Hondo this year. Rio would have destroyed them. Rio a school 1/5th the enrollment.

  • SGaletti

I hate to say it, but I’m picking ND over St. Francis. I think it’ll be a close game. I don’t think Monrovia will have much trouble with San Marino. Personally I’d like to see Rio Hondo take on the likes of Monrovia, Arcadia, Muir, Pasadena, St. Francis.

  • thats makes a lot of sense….

Hey Collins, pure genius!!!! Didn’t have to put to much thought process on that analysis, huh?

  • reply to Anonymous at 8:58am

Now to dissect your humorous statements:

“A win tonight should put them back in the top 10 for good and make them the front runner for the Alpha Title.”

Top ten??? That is Miguel’s call. No way you should be ranked ahead of La Salle – they won. Anyone can be a front runner for the Alpha league title. It is one of the weakest leagues around.

“It’s clear that you have not seen them play since they lost the first two games of the year that they clearly should have won. They are a different team now and have beaten tougher teams then the first two they faced.”

First thing I will say – YOU LOST. Regarding the teams you played that “you should have won” – Linfield Christian is 5-0; La Salle is 3-3, but who are their three losses against? 1) San Marino (5-0) 2) Monrovia (5-0) and 3) TC (3-2-1) – losses are against ranked teams with a combined record of 13-2-1.

Regarding the “tougher teams” Maranatha has faced since – Bakersfield Christian (2-3), Calvary Chapel (2-3)and Kilpatrick (0-5) – combined record of 4-11.

Get you facts straight – your statements are humorous.

  • Muir Fan

Let’s go Muir. The Apaches are terrible, and their fans are as well. I was trashtalked as I left an Arcadia game once.

  • Muir Fan

Sorry, that’s not fair to bash on Arcadia’s fans. I mean their students are terrible when it comes to sportsmanship.

  • Goldenarm

    will benny hung play tonight?

  • Tom S

Oh man, Ive been stay off the blogs for a while but since the bashing of Maranatha has started again guess I have to chime in.
Look, Maranatha will take care of Brentwood tonight and be the clear favorite to take the Alpha league. Im ducking waiting for the bashing to start. Will go deep into the playoffs and maybe a championship game.
The Minutemen step it up next year by moving up to the Olympic league. League will consist of Valley, Village and Whittier Christian, LA Baptist and Maranatha, Paraclete moves out. I have it from responsible parties that Maranatha has scheduled preseason games against local public schools and no not Marshall or Blair.
Murphy is going to challenge the team in preseason with them taking on a tougher league.
And no the Minutemen do not deserve to be in the PSN Top 10 yet.

Lol you want to talk about bad sportsmanship? Muir is one of the worst in the Pacific League by far…The muir coaches talk trash to the opposing players…or is that considered good sportsmanship in your books?

  • goteamgo

    Tom S –

The Maranatha bashing probably started because the Maranatha chest thumping started. Let the Anonymous ones fight it out.

Good to see that they will be moving to a tougher league next season. The Alpha league seemed to lull Maranatha into complacency. It will be interesting to see who they schedule for non-league games next season.

    Good luck in your season.

Monrovia just played their worst, most uninspired football ever. Way too many penalties. Defense dropped three easy interceptions. Offensive play calling was too conservative. Seemed like Bell was coaching not to lose. While SM played not to lose by much and grinded down the clock all night. Monrovia didn’t look at all like the 5-0 team that they are. If they play like this next week against TC they will definitely get their butts handed to them. Looks like the bye week did more bad than good. Hope they have a better performance next week.

  • the Sleeper

hey looks like this league will be interesting this year. could mtown have some weakness? maybe

St. Francis tough loss tonight i think the whole west San Gabriel valley was routing for you all the way. You’ll make us proud

  • Observantcat

I agree with you Anne Onimus, Give the Game ball to Lowden, he looked like a Man amongst boys out there tonight on Defense. He practically single handily took apart San Marino’s offense. Especially with San Marino having the Ball with first and goal on the 1 yard line and our D shut them down. Our offense didn’t look like the Monrovia offense that our fans are used to. Way to many conservative plays being called right up the gut. Johnson ran like a man on fire through the middle, but the penalties made his efforts a bit worthless. This might be a good thing in waking up this sleeping giant for next weeks match up with TC. I should be a great game and the team that wants it enough should win and go into CIF with a chip on their shoulder and bring home the Big Trophy. I think that Mike Mooney did everything he could to keep the game within winning distance and with lot’s of help from the guys in stripes, but in the end Monrovia was way to physical on the D and that was the difference. This RHL race will get better and better as the weeks follow.

  • Billy Jacobs

Hey Gunny great prediction. If you were at the game you would have seen that SF should have won that game, but whatever s*** happens. I think SFs 4 point loss to ND tops MHS 2 point win over SM.

  • Call It Like It Is

San Marino outplayed Monrovia tonight. Held them scoreless in the second half. SM missed a pick on the two that went for a complete and subsequent TD or don’t you remember that Monrovia fan. SM fumble on 4th and one with the running back in reaching the end zone to end, but dropped the ball to end the first half. Would have been 14 – 13 Monrovia at half time. Does San Marino fold? No. Monrovia gets the kickoff and San Marino holds and they did on five more possessions. San Marino stopped Monrovia all night long. All the talk about how great this team is. Maybe there are and if they are then give credit where due. Monrovia had two offensive penalties and two on defense. They just got stuffed at the line of scrimmage by San Marino time and time again. San Marino stopped them going wide as well and Bueno only had two decent scramble runs. Give San Marino the credit. They had more offense than Monrovia. Had SM not missed an extra point in the first half they would have been playing overtime. Monrovia may be as good as everyone is saying, but all those who gave no credit to San Marino should step up now and admit they were wrong. Monrovia was outplayed and should have lost that game. Should have, would have could have – I know that at the end it’s scoreboard, but Monrovia got lucky.

  • longtimefan

Solid win for MHS (27) vs Brentwood (7).

  • Missed a Great Game

You saw a what sounds like a great game of SF vs. ND. You also missed a great Monrovia vs. San Marino game. Hope you had someone who knows what they are doing covering that game for you. Maybe now you might get off your high horse that only speaks how great Monrovia and TC are in the RHL. San Marino stuffed Monrovia all night long. Two drives is all Monrovia could put together. How many points did Monrovia score in the second half – zero. They stepped up and stopped San Marino on defense and they deserve credit for that, but San Marino should have won that game. Sure hope you report this as it should be in tomorrow’s Star New.

  • Big Bob

Look how many excuses Monrovia is making already. Blaming the officials for this game? Monrovia couldn’t move the ball consistently. All year long there’ talk how no one can stop Monrovia. None of their possession were stopped by referees. Too much time, illegal procedure, clear late hit of SM’s QB, and #55 (who is an awesome player) hitting SM’s QB three steps out of bounds. Monrovia – face the fact and quit making excuses. You aren’t the dynasty you think you are. Can’t crush a weak SM team that plays a weak preseason. And what do you do – blame conservative play calling and the refs. If you were that good neither would matter. Grow up and accept the fact you escaped with a win and be classy about it. Give the other team what they deserve. Monrovia is good, but show some class.

  • annonymous

Calm down Big Bob: I didn’t see any excuses made in that ugly win. Bottom line is they won. Being an outside RHL fan, I didn’t see anything that SM did that made them look good except for the Monrovia mistakes. Go have another beer and pick on somebody your own size.

  • Rhl fan

Wait “anonymous” (a.k.a. M-town dad) How is stopping the Monrovia o 6 times in the 2nd half for 0 points Monrovia mistakes, the m-town D did play extremely well but San marino’s O and especially the qb were able to make plays on them, thts not Monrovia mistakes, can yoi guys just wear it that your not that great and that SM isn’t that bad

  • LBoogie

I think ST. Francis played a hell of a game! We should of won that game, but unfortunately it didn’t turn out that way. The SF defense needs to wrap up on there tackles and also be more disipline with their assignments. SF was giving them way too much yardage on third and long. The turn over on the first drive in the third quater killed us. Let’s get ready for Loyola now. I think SF is for real this year. Miguel, you were at the game. SF should definately be the #1 team in the area…………..

  • sfhs92

    Billy Jacobs,
I dont think a loss is as good as a win and neither should you. Monrovia did what it needed to do to get the W, and SF couldnt hold on. Hopefully the youngmen in the Brown and Gold learn from this and put a whopping on loyola. It’s long over due.

  • Kentera

What a showing against a good team. There is a new #1 in the WSGV. St Francis proved that against a great team. Had the game won, blew it. But dominated a Pac-5 team the whole time. One of the Top ranked teams in the LA times. They will beat Loyola, Alemany, Chaminade and St Paul(which crushed your biggest threat(Clete). 4th place in our league) You monrovia fans need to get thicker skin and stop calling us rich and spoiled(yes, you Philly B.) Try to show some class. I worked two jobs to put my kid through St. Frncis. The reason why Riley is getting his scholarship offers is because he is a football player. Not his heighth or speed. He can just flat out play. St Francis stepped up, played with the big boys, made a mistake and got beat.

  • The Lancer

Miguel you gotta come down to the game at St. Matthias!!!! Come on La Salle vs. Verbum Dei, where else would you want to be on a Saturday Night!!!! Get over there and see Mike Alexander and the Lancers tear it up!!!

  • Big L

really? the keppel sg game was tied 3rd quarter? Looks like keppels showing some life.

  • Coach C

St Francis is for REAL! Tough loss but will make them stronger for the playoffs. They will not see a better team in the post season. I think a CIF Championship is coming to the WSGV, but it will be at Foothill Blvd. Riley is the man. Plays BOTH O and D. Player of the Year. Wow!

  • Anne Onimus

Big B. The only excuse Ive read so far was that there was a few bad calls by the officials. What other excuses are you talking about? Monrovia played conservatively by trying to run the ball up the middle against a stout SM d line and they kept getting stuffed, thats a fact. Monrovia defense couldnt hold on to three possible interceptions enabling SM to prolong their drives, thats a fact. Monrovia committed too many penalties on both sides of the ball, resulting in our offense getting pushed back or SMs offense moving forward, thats a fact. Monrovias receivers couldnt catch a cold, thats a fact. So what excuses are you talking about? Ill be classy like you asked, SM played a good game and almost won. Monrovia didnt play so well and almost lost. SM is as good as their record shows. Pull back on your reins Big B. youre coming across as a grumpy old man.

Billy J. What the hell are you smoking?! A loss is better than a win?! Since when? And in what part of the world? Im sure none of the SF kids were yelling Yayyy we almost won! Im NOT calling you an idiot, but that comment was idiotic. Again, Im NOT calling you an idiot.

Call it like it is. Ill give SM credit, they played hard nose football tonight and they gave Monrovia almost all they can handle. And yes, Monrovia was lucky to walk away with a win. SM is better than what people are giving them credit for. But what Im getting from what you wrote is that you think SM played incompetently tonight. Is that right? First you mention the missed pick that ended up being caught by the intended receiver(I do remember that, it just happened last night). Then the fumble at the goal line. And then the missed extra point. By the way, a missed pick that gets caught by the receiver for a completion, is still a completion(I dont understand why you brought this up). So youre saying that if none of these things would have happened SM would have won? And then you say Monrovia got outplayed. My definition of outplaying someone is beating them. If SM outplayed Monrovia they would have won. SM played an awesome game tonight, but when the game was on the line, Monrovias defense stepped up.

MaGG. Tell me again why SM should have won this game.

Monrovia definitely has some work to do to become better. SM is better than expected. We should all spend more time supporting the teams we like, rather than bashing the teams we dont. Beyond that, all you Monrovia haters keep telling yourself whatever you want to get yourself thru the night.

In case some of you missed my Monday….New York…Philly B…and of course Observantcat….

“””SM can hang with M-town if they play ball-control offense, which Mooney will do. Get to the fourth quarter and anything can happen. SM also has to play mistake free and gang-tackle on defense. SM will give up the big play eventually but SM must stay poised and eventually Monrovia will show its true colors and hurt themselves…frustrate them with the run and hard-hitting defense…speed kills but so does UNDISCIPLINED football!”””

  • Wildcats vs Titans

Had to go back and look at the stats.

Monrovia scores 27, 59, 33, 36 and 48 points in their first five games and San Marino holds them to 14 points. Monrovia doesn’t score in the second half nor get past San Marinos 22 yard line on second half six possessions.

Monrovia gains 320, 332, 306, 324 and 405 yards on the ground in their first five games. San Marino holds them to 182 yards on the ground and just 40 passing. Not one offensive play was called back due to a penalty. Bueno gets 46 yards, Johnson 72 and Ramierz 60. San Marino didnt allow a big play all night longest play 24 yards.

San Marinos defense played a great game and their offense controlled the ball, managed the game well and played in Monrovias side of the field much of the game.

If San Marinos running back doesnt drop the handoff from the one yard line hes in the end zone and halftime score is 14 -13. SMs mistake no hit by Monrovia. Both teams fumbled twice, both teams were penalized five times.

San Marino should stay in the top five in the Mid Valley Division after that showing. If anything San Marino proved to many that they are for real and much better than most gave them credit.

Hope the Star News give San Marino the coverage, credit and respect they deserve.

    StF, what a game!

I was with a few other guys enjoying the game and all of us were impressed with StFs showing. That ND team is very talented and well coached. Minus a couple plays and the game could have very well gone in favor of StF. Great showing and a wonderful turnout by folks in the SGV.

Miguel even put on his own side show. How are you feeling after that Miguel? lol

  • sfhs89

Very tough loss at Freidman Field for us last night – one of the tougher ones I’ve ever endured as a Golden Knight (whether it be as a student-athelete or alum).

Posthuma was a friggin stud out there.

If we play this way next week versus the hated Cubs, we’ll take them out.

  • Miguel Melendez

Muddy: It was freekin funny, that’s for sure. But honestly my back is aching as we speak, but I’ll be OK. Great showing by the Golden Knights. I was really rooting for them. I also liked that Cardinal Roger Mahoney didn’t hide his true colors when he openly gestured he was rooting for St. Francis. Pretty cool.

  • Tom S

Miguel: How did you end up on your picks this week? Hope you keep going against the Minutemen. They really stepped it up this week against a strong Brentwood team. Good game for them both offense and defense.
Ill let the Anons battle it out and I’m stay out of the way. Im done with all the petty bickering.

There is no way after last night that Monrovia is better than SF. SF proved that they are the best team.

I cant wait to see all of the no class comments that you Monrovia fans will say after this comment. Your comments are not just examples of no class but a lack of intelligence as well.

  • cant believe it!

  • New York

I dont know why a close game with San Marino was such a surprise. Ive played against too many Mooney-coached San Marino teams to ever overlook them, especially at San Marino.

I know Monrovia has far more talent, but football is not a relay race. There are many other factors involved. There are many things that the opposing team can do to disrupt things.

It is nice to see Monrovia win a close game and have to face loss, unlike in any of the other games. Hopefully this close victory will serve as a reminder to stay sharp and focused.

  • Observantcat

    Football Fan:

Why look forward to classless comments when St. Francis showed up and played the game to win and almost did. I think the difference in comments are made from those who do not really understand the game of football. Always trying to put class and other things in the way of the truth. I for one was rooting in favor of St. Francis to win over ND and probably most of this areas true football fans were rooting for St. Francis to win that game. It seems all of classless blogs begin with how much Greater St. Francis is over everyone no matter what the circumstances are. If you enjoy the game of football you would know that a game isn’t won on a blog it is won on the field. I hope that for Riley’s sake that he gets his just rewards in CIF and maybe get CIF player of the year in your DIv. That may be the ultimate reward for St. Francis and the RIley family. There would be absolutely no reason for anyone to look at St. Francis efforts as less than stellar and yes they should have won but the season is far from over and they might meet ND again down the line this time with a different outcome.

  • Anne Onimus

FF. What are you talking about?

  • Grim Reaperxxx

    Key points that are overlooked.

    1. Conditioning: Monrovia was clearly fading. I was on the Monrovia sidelines last night and it was clear that edge for conditioning was on the SM side. Why do you think Monrovia didn’t score in the second half. Why do you think SM scored on its final drive.

If the game was 5 quarters Monrovia would have lost by two touchdowns. But the game is 4 quarters so they were able to sneak out with a W, but it was clear that they were all in at the end. When the legs go, the talent evaporated.

    2. Another poster observed that Monrovia, while more talented, was not a disciplined team. Yes there were several instances (only one flagged) where the team had 12 players on the field (both offense and defense). The substitutions were not smooth my any means. Monrovia would be vulnerable to a no huddle offense (both due to the pressure it would put on personnel due to conditioning issues cited above) and poor substituting. The pressure will draw penalties for mistakes. Substituting, players missing keys, and being out of position, if not corrected will result in an early Monrovia departure from the playoffs.

The good news for Monrovia fans is that the coaching staff has time to correct these issues, (rather than whine about the refs) the question is whether the physically talented players can improve their conditioning and execution. Two big IF’s.

If they dont beat san gabriel in the next two weeks i want the coaching staff, cheerleaders, the dance team, the band i dont care if they get rid of the concession workers anyone who has been contiminated about this situation for the last 3 years. Darrin is overrated. i ve seen better alhambra qb in whole 19 yearsd there plus, the offensive coordinator i want him gone and fired, he chokes at playing calling!!!!

i remember there some bloggers criticing me about the alhambra play caller and alhambra QB well the schurr game just marked my words.

Having read all the previous entries on this Blog I have two conclusions.

1.SM fans say Titans played great and controllede the ball.

2.Monrovia Fans agree the Cats played poorly on offense and Defense held their ground.

Therefore SM played well Monrovia played poorly and here is the “BUT” CATS STILL WON!!!!

Conclusion; Even on Monrovias worst day they can still beat the Titans!

  • Big Football Fanatic

SM vs Monrovia two Big Ifs!

If SM could have got the ball in the end zone when they had 1st and goal at the 1 yd line.
Instead of the Cats stuffing 4 straight plays!

If SM could have made a simple 2 point conversion!

I guess our out of shape undiciplined players will just have to settle for the Win!

This may come as shock but Monrovia doesn’t care about what SF does win or lose.

We don’t play SF you are not in our League or Division for that matter so get over yourself!

Its all happened before. M-town comes out of the gate on fire, but once they peak all they can do is fall. The whole football culture in Monrovia is about coming out strong but never finishing. Monrovia came to play a far athletically inferior SM team. But when SM didnt fold the cats did. Once again M-town fields undoubtedly the best athletes in their Division, with one of the best coaches. But the program still stinks of giving up like it always has.

    Big football finatic,
if sm fumbled on the one and couldn’t covert on the 2-point conversion and missed a pat, and let a pick slip through a db’s hands and lead to a touchdown,, then they obviously didnt play well, you’re contradicting yourself and this is going to be a good year for the RHL

  • 210love

The league title is M-towns if they want it. Just like it is most years. TC, Sm, not so sure about LC anymore all have an existing chance the question is when do the cats collapse. In league or when it really matters. Prior to the results of last nights game I thought M-town had a new attitude. But last night was all to familiar to the 2006 Cats.

Hope I dont get blindsided on this but best luck with your game tonight against Verbum Dei. Hope your team does well in league and go deep in the playoffs, but Id hate to be in the same division as Oaks Christian. Who knows, with Maranatha moving to the Olympic league and with realignment maybe someday well be in the same division. Wouldnt a Maranatha v LaSalle playoff game be great.
Hey, how about we get on each schools ADs and lets get next years La Salle v Maranatha game moved to PCC. Neither school can hold the crowds comfortably and PCC would be a great venue. Since it will be Maranathas home game Ill get the In-N-Out truck there and both schools can tailgate in the southeast parking lot. Would be a blast and maybe then we can get Miggy to show up.

What the Paper didnt tell you about the Verbum Dei vs La Salle game:

With Verb up some 46+ points to La Salles 28 & approximately 5 minutes left in the game, Verb went for an onside kick which they recovered. They went on to score another TD and point after. Verb 55-28 with 4+ minutes left in the game. La Salle receives the next kickoff and shoots 3 and out. Verb then begins an all out air assault attempting passes of 40+ yards per pass attempt. One eventually hits and Verb goes up 61-28. There was less than 2 minutes remaining on the clock at this point. Verb goes for and completes a 2 point conversion. As you could imagine, Verbs 1st team was in the entire game. Verb wins a classless 63-28.

From the stands: The vast majority of Verb fans were very respectful and kind. I found myself speaking to a few families prior to the game near the snack bar and wishing each others players luck for the game. It was great to see.

This next description from the stands was on only from 8 to 10 visitors from the Verb side. I want to make that clear. These 8 to 10 Verb visitors made the way over to the center of the stands (There is only one set of seats both teams share) and began taunting the La Salle visitors & families. These same people were not there until the last 12 minutes (4th Quarter) of the game so they clearly were there to incite and humiliate the La Salle families. An elderly couple who I met drove 45 minutes to see their grandson play in the La Salle game. They left the game early fearing that these Verb fans may incite some violence. Yup, it got that bad.

Verbs coaches displayed no class by running up the score and running it up in the manner in which they did. HOWEVER, these 8 to 10 Verb visitors did more harm to the reputation of their school, families, faculty, and fans than any classless play calling by their coaches. They humiliated themselves and cast a shadow over their program for years to come by their behavior. Simply put, these 8-10 Verb fans acted like hoot rats and thugs.

Where was the Verb AD? Actually, where was La Salles AD? Grey didnt make this trip I see.

    Observations from the stands

Traveled to La Canada to watch the SF/ND game but was unable to find parking, so ol’ Reno mosseyed over to Muir to watch the Mustangs/Apaches. There is a reason the this two teams are in the middle of the Pacific League. Arcadia out played Muir but threw 4 interceptions, 2 for TD and another that set up a TD. Reno knows QBs and while the soph QB for Arcadia will be good, he has thrown 8 interceptions in the past games from what I’ve heard-time for a change. Yet Muir couldn’t put away Arcadia and fumbled twice in the 4th quarter. Good teams don’t make this mistakes and these two teams are not very good (BAD!). However I was impressed with #17 and #28 from Muir. Those boys can play. The RB from Arcadia was shifty and had to have 150 yards and the Apaches clearly outgained Muir in total yardage. Long season will soon be very short in Altadena and on Campus Drive.

  • The Lancer

The Verbum Dei crowd was very disappointing. I can only hope we see them in the playoffs. The problem is at some point the Verbum Dei coaching decided to act like children. The players and fans are very immature, but that is expected from Verbum Dei, but the coaching staff should know better than what they showed. Honestly this rivalry has hit an absolute new level. I will be calling a few old Verbum Dei alumni (the very few respectful alumni) to see if there will be any action taken against their coaching staff. If I was anyone important over at La Salle, I would honestly be asking for the Verbum Dei coaching staff to be fired. Then it took a bad turn, when I was walking to my car and both sides were verbally attacking each other, and the Verbum Dei side got very racial. They made some pretty serious accusations up. It got very ugly to say the least, the Verbum Dei faculty, teachers, principal, alumni, students, fans, basically anyone associated with Verbum Dei should be very ashamed with themselves and should really seek help if they had anything to do with the outcome of this game.
I mean an onside kick with 4 minutes to go up by four or five touchdowns. I am very sad and soooo glad I am done with high school football after this season.

My point was SM fans thought the Titans played well and they still lost. So what happens when they play poorly?

  • WingNut

    Verb vs. La Salle

Besides the classless play calling at the end, I saw the same thing with the Verb fans coming over after the 3rd qtr. Note, there were no students from Verb involved. The VD fans ranged in age from early 20s to late 40s. I was shocked and waited to leave the stands after most of the VD fans cleared out so I didnt have to walk past some of the trouble makers. I looked over the parking lot prior to leaving before I made my way to my vehicle. I would be lying if I didnt tell you I was genuinely concerned for my safety.

Their AD should have stepped in and put a stop to the verbal assaults. A few VD folks seemed like they were looking for a fight. Over a HS football game? It reminded me of the Turkey Tussle and why the crowd is separated with a Police Line. Win or lose, it is a GAME.

Personally, I would never want to play that team again, even if we have an opportunity to face them in the playoffs. I can promise you this, I will never put 1 dollar in VD’s pocket by paying to attend another game on their “turf.”

Question, why would VDs coaches go out of their way risking injury to starting players on a game that is clearly theirs to run up the score?

  • response to RHL fan

To answer your question – When SM plays poorly like they did vs. Cantwell and San Gabriel – they still found a way to win. Playing well, but not well enough against a very tough Monrovia team they lose the game – by two with all Monrovia people holding their breath at the end. SM made a lot of mistakes, constantly battled a relentless Monrovia pass rush and still SM had almost 200 yards passing and many clutch plays. Maybe you need to just suck it up RHL fan and let yourself be okay with the fact that San Marino outplayed Monrovia. You sound like you know football well enough to realize that a team can outplay the another team and still lose the game.

  • Hawk Fan

Here is a something that really bothers me, How can anyone compare Monrovia n St. Frances. Monrovia has a Great football team n athletes, but is not in the same Division as St. Francis. Yes, Monrovia is 6-0 but has played very easy teams. If you look back at there games, the two schools that have given them a challenge have been Arcadia n San Marino. At that, Arcadias game would have probably been closer, if there main running back had not suffered an injury. If you stop an look at Monrovia’s schedule it is more than likely they will end up undefeated, there is no one there than can really challenge them other than Temple City.I would like to see Monrovia play the schedule St. Francis has. And by all means if they match up just as good, then my hats off to Monrovia. And for someone to say that Bueno is as good as Riley,is ridiculous. I have seen both kids play n there aint no comparison. Riley is by far a better athlete. I don’t mean to take anything away from Bueno he is in his own way a good athlete. I don’t know where someone got Bueno’s stats from, but he is no 5ft 8in. If anything, he might be 5ft 6in and maybe 135lbs. Ramirez is 5ft 9in or maybe 5ft 10in and about 155lbs. When u see this two together Ramirez by far is bigger, so Bueno’s stats could not be right. After all this u might think I’m not a Monrovia fan but never the less I am. I just don’t think that this two schools can be compared until they play in the same Division. I hope coach Maddoxx lines up harder school for preseason next year. St Francis n Charter Oak would be good.

  • The Stang Fan

Honestly, I wasn’t able to make the game this weekend, so I can’t refute your description with my own account. I did however have a buddy of mine call me throughout the game and in his estimation the Stangs played down to the level of their opponent. In fact, he mentioned that Muir played MUCH better against Burbank. That’s unfortunate. Muir had the ball in the redzone a few times and fumbled twice and failed to score on the other. That can NOT continue to happen.

But no one I spoke with said ANYTHING about Arcadia outplaying Muir. Two drives, one of which occurred with 2 minutes left in the game and Muir up by 20, was all Arcadia could muster. I’d be interested to hear from Apache Joe about the game.

I’m sticking with my prediction that Muir will do better in the playoffs than they have the last two years…remember, it’s all about matchups in the playoffs, and the young guys are going to have a MUCH more confidence and EXPERIENCE heading into Week 11. Not to mention 2010….

Btw….congrats to SF for playing your ASSES off and almost pulling it out vs. ND. And for ANYONE, even you sfhs92, to suggest that M-town’s 2-point victory is more impressive, important, beneficial, or whatever term you wanna use, than SF’s 4-point loss….is COMPLETELY MORONIC! It is also moronic for some folks to suggest that SF’s entire schedule is DOMINANT. Their last 5 games are….and the truth is they need to start scheduling 1-2 tougher teams for their first five games in order to prepare themselves for the ND’s, BA’s, Crespi’s, etc. And did anyone see that ALemany beat Crespi…SF vs. Alemany should be a good one.

    Notes on Amat

Did anyone happen to notice that Alemany beat Crespi last night ?

    Interesting eh

Anyway, prior to last night, I was under the impression that our games were going to get progressively harder as the schedule wore on. Boy was I wrong. I guess that it just goes to show you that any of these teams on our schedule can beat anyone on any given night, including some of the states power houses.

As for the game itself, I have to tell you that last nights game was intense. The kind of hitting that the Amat defensive back field put on the St Paul swordsmen last night was out of this world ! I have to say that over the last few years, I havent seen that type of hitting coming out of an Amat team against an opponent in a long time. To tell you the truth, it got pretty scary out on the field last night for those poor swordsmen. I can see now why so many of these guys decided to drop the ball rather than take the kinds of hits that that defense was putting out there on those receivers last night. Seeing all those guys getting laid out so badly was truly smash mouth football. Yikes !

And, still No CIF Championship in 15 years!

I agree that San Marino outplayed Monrovia and still lost, however they could have easily won. 3rd and goal on the 1 and you fumble 15 seconds before half? SM played well but could have played M-Town much better and really taken advantage of Monrovia’s off night. Sm found ways to make plays but it could only get them so far

  • What would it take?

I’ll be okay with the fact that SM outplayed Monrovia and still lost. But riddle me this Batman. If SM outplayed Monrovia and still lost, what would it take for SM to outplay Monrovia and win? How about first and goal on the one?.. Oh wait, you had that.

  • Big Football Fanatic

San Marino Fans keep saying how if they hadn’t turned the ball over etc, etc, they outplayed Monrovia yada yada.

They don’t mention the Facts that Cats defense created those turn overs and dropped 3 additional interceptions

Also we handed the Titans the Ball at our own 20 which led to their 1st score.

Their 2nd touchdown was assisted by 3 Big Penalties late in the game.

They never sustained a decent drive on their own during the entire game.

They couldn’t run so they went to the air and did complete some passes, but even then Forgatch was either under pressure or being tackled and just threw the ball up for grabs and mostly just got lucky.

I do have to give Yortsos credit for some good grabs of bad passes that wobbled thru the air were just near enough for him to get to.

The bottom line is you didn’t play good enough to win just Like Baseball last year you win some games look good on paper but in the end it’s our Boys with the Rio Hondo League Champions patch on their Lettermans Jacket.

  • Reply to Big Football Fan

    Hey Mr. Big Football Fan,

How about saying it was a hard fought game, both sides made plenty of mistakes and be proud of your Monrovia team that had a couple great defensive stands for the win when your offense had an off night. Forgatch was rushed all night, stayed poised and still completed a number of clutch passes usually on the run and then ran 14 yards for the last score. A fair observation is he played a better game than Nick Bueno who threw a key pick, fumbled twice (recovered both) and had just 40 yards on the ground although we all see he is an excellent running QB. San Marino’s defense along with Forgatch kept San Marino them the game.

  • haha

Hey La Salle fans, quit whining, you dont like the score getting run up on you? how bout you stop them on that D that apparently was a strength??? last year? I remember all the BS about last season was the fault of Rettig and the OC well now both are gone and you guys are getting blown out worse with more returners…hmmm maybe all the negative karma of all that scapegoating has returned…no one else to blame…Redemption?

  • Reno Hightower

    Stang fan,

As a van conversion specialist, I call them as I see them. Arcadia played made the mistakes that allowed Muir to win. The two interceptions that were returned for TDs, and a great return by Muir both times, followed very good Apache drives. Arcadia had a substational adavantage in yardage. A good combination of runs and passes that ate up yards and then… a good Mustang defensive play (TD). Muir, as a 3rd or 4th place team, will face a pretty good team in the 1st round and turn in the pads before Thanksgiving. Hopefully, for you, they will be eating Bulldog leftovers.

  • Lc alum

    Hey big football finatic
I agree that Yortsos made one play where he caught a 50 yard ball from Forgatch (on the run and if he had caught it the first time it wouldve been a 90 yard td) and that he threw the ball up for grabs on a fourth down to give his team a chance and then made a bad decision on a ball that lowden laid out for and couldn’t hang on to but give the kid some credit, with about .4 seconds to throw every play and a bad snap every other play he still managed to make plays, almost throw two hundred yards, run for the potential game winning td, didn’t throw a pic and outplayed the great Nick bueno. If m-town playS like that against tc or us, i doubt they will have the rhl champion patch on their letterman jackets

  • anonymous

    big football finatic,
how did monrovia force the fumble on the 1, the fullback dropped the ball before he was touched

  • Response to Football Finatic

Why don’t you just give SM some credit because they stayed in the ring with M-Town which no one else could do. Show some respect to a team that didn’t back down or believe that they would get destroyed

  • Goldenarm

San Marino may have exacted some revenge on TC already by throwing a road flare in the collective underwear of Monrovia’s players and coaching staff.

Monrovia’s offense ran no plays designed as “scoring plays” or even big plays. They just ran plays – and looked to the individuals involved to blow open a simple run into a big play – and it did not happen. Bueno was a background player (by designation) and only rolled out a couple times, no QB draws or major play designed with #4 in mind. This was even more clear starting the 2nd half, with Maddox intently focused on running the ball, many carries going to “The Punisher” the M-town big load himself, #6 D. Johnson. Hit him low – or pick up your neck brace and Cpap breathing machine on the way out. For all their talent, M-town was frustrated by SM – and it showed. TC will now come face to face with that frustration – and no way will M-town play 2 consecutive unmotivated offensive games.
Trent Converse had a tremendous game for SM, as did the entire SM defense. The SM O-line is real and Mooney had them motivated. Unfortunately, Benny Hung did not appear 100% or on his game entirely…he ran straight ahead and fell to the first tackler, juking no one. Not what I’ve seen from Hung in the past. He still did his job.
I could write a novel on M-town’s defensive standouts. Lowden has no peer and will easily fit D-1, were he to start tomorrow…. just an outstanding big play performer with natural football instincts. McCarthy is a QB’s bad dream.
Please kill the “bad refs” theory on the M-town performance, that is so far fetched to describe the big picture over 4 quarters of football. By far the most game changing call was the punted ball that hit an M-town player and was recovered by SM….a zebra huddle followed and the Cats had the ball, not SM.

Lastly, to the ugly bastard wearing SM colors and standing near the snack bar – who said “Forgatch sucks” as the Titans went down in the last seconds…I can only say I truly wish another SM fan had wheeled on you with an uppercut and a couple right crosses. Your QB gave all he had, and while not perfect, did an outstanding job putting his team in a position to win.

In response to the negative comments about the Alhambra MOORS. I think that the MOORS are an average team with a couple of very good players and yet they were able to give Schurr a run for their money. That is a tribute to good coaching and preparation. I am reading all the knocks on the MOOR coaching staff and what people do not realize is that if you cannot protect your QB then you will be in trouble. I am sure the MOORS will be ready on Friday because their coaches will have them ready for their next league game.

  • watching

Alhambra had 2 weeks to prepare for schurr i hope they were ready. So you are blaming your o-line so it was their fault the receivers did not catch the ball. It was their fault the balls were thrown Three different time to the same DB from schurr. So if they were COACHED and they had two weeks to watch film and prepare. You would think the COACHING would have an answer for the protection problems. Once again these are excuses that we hear everytime alhambra loses a game. It cant be the COACHING it the kids its the linemen. The alhambra QB has been running for his life for the passed 6 weeks. So this is not a new problem the COACHES knew they had this problem.

Hey GA nice to hear you chime in.
I totally concur with your assesment of the Cats Offense. I kept expecting Bueno to keep amd run amd it never really appeared.

As far as the kick where Cats player touched the ball but retained possesion, that was because the player was blocked into the ball from behind after he had stopped running.

As far as that Fan comment about Forgatch it’s sad but doesn’t surprise me. You should hear what is said at Baseball Games.

6.)player callers who have no understanding of making in-game adjustments= no job for u next year(not in coaching)
7.)Oh ya! and any coach at any level who blames his players oline or whoever for a loss = a sorry excuse for a coach.

Real coaches will take the blame for a tough loss and when their qb throws 3 picks and makes 10 bad plays in 1 gaME for having “that” kid at the position and who is the line coach?? no one knows and no one cares ..qb loss the game and they need a new play caller NOW or teams with half the talent will continue to beat them and send mr coach rudyflores to his retirement 5-5…

It was kind of funny reading the Monrovia bloggers {Observant cat, Philly B] talking how great their team is, and how they would beat teams like Amat by 20. Do you guy’s still think that? Its easy to score a lot of points and look impressive when you play the schedule the Cats have, but you see what happens when you come up against a decent team. San Marino isn’t even close to a St. Francis, can you imagine what St. Francis would have done to the Wildcats on Friday night? Monrovia is good in their division but its a big difference between Mid valley and Western divisions.

you have to accept for monrovia / san marino game that neither team played up to its full potential but you have to give credit where its due and san marino’s d cordinator (still moreland for those who think mooney is calling d now too) came up with a a solid game plan and executed it very well. San Marinos offense was stymied by monrovias D at pivotal points in the game. I did also notice monrovia seemed to be tiring cuz hung in the fourth was starting to get to second level a bit in the defense. Ultimately game came down to failed oppurtunites on offense for SM and Monrovias D rising to the occasion and bailing them out when needed. I think monrovias offense was very vanilla with nothing surprising the Sm D or keeping them on there toes. Temple city monrovia game will be interesting to what changes m-town makes on O

  • Observantcat

Good in their division or aka (you know who you are)

I still believe that the Cats can take on any team on any of your schedules and shock most of you who do not know football to well. The Monrovia/San Marino Game is Parallel to the St. Francis/Cresenta Valley game. Most thought that CV was going to lay on the field and wave the white flag… Didn’t happen and the same with San Marino (Ditto) St. Francis had to play with all they had to keep their record alive and so did the Wildcats in week 6. So to pass judgement on a team that has still yet to loose to anyone they have played so far is far too premature in accessing how good they really are. Go figure that Burbank would beat a CV by 30 and Big St. Francis could only muster a 7 point victory. So to draw any conclusions at this point would be very insignificant. Sure these types of comparisons draw plenty of haters to the blogs trying to throw in their side jabs to the ribs but what you must remember is that their is only 1 undefeated team on the West Side and 1 Undefeated team on the East and unless something changes soon it may remain that way until Dec.

    Moor Til I Die

Its too bad that people have to result to name calling and bad mouthing in order to get their point across. I am sure this is not an alhambra coach writing these things since those guys seem to have some class. But im sure it is someone close to their program. The negative comments being written about the Moors are coming from their own community. Yet mud keeps beig thrown at people not involved. You are part of the reason for the negative responses. Just move on and support your team in their next game. A loss is a loss and we have to man up when it happens. At the end the neither the Moors or the Spartans will be standing so when it is all done it doesn’t matter. Just let the coach retire with some dignity. Don’t ruin what he has built by runnig your mouth and disrespecting other programs. I’m sure coach rudyflores respects all of his fellow opponents and his players do as well.

They only reason why Alhambra passes the ball so much is that Darrin dad is the play caller. What happened with Alhambras special plays 30 trap, 28 sweep, 46 gap Z reverse, those plays worked all the time with Danny Harrison, Phil Huretas, Andy Fuentes, Clifton Gatlin, Freddie Colbert, Adam Tate just to name a few. Those plays is what made Alhambra football, running the ball until the DB’s come up and throw over the top. I hope Alhambra gets back on track and make a run at the playoffs. And for next year, Alhambra needs pickup Randy Backus from Ruedaflores first coaching staff or go after Keith Jones Gil’s assistant coach in the mid 90’s. Those two coaches know what Alhambra Football is all about. 4 QTRS, ALHAMBRA PRIDE

well my intro in number 11 wr from verbum dei i have read all your comments about us but lets look at your faults the only reason i mean the only reason we ran up the score is because yall did the same thing to our undermaned JV team i was at the game 33-0 we had 15 people including my little brother so i take the blame for this i wanted to run up the score because my brother felt horrable so its not our coaches fault it was mine and how can you blame us for playing the best we could but in a player point of view were very respectful we helped you guys up congradulated after the game and ACTULAYY IF WE WANTED TO WE COULD OF PUT UP 80 and to the crowd situation after the game i came to my girlfriend and one of the la salle parents told me your a lucky NIger that our qb is hurt so stop wit this empression that its all verb fault LA SALLE IS LUCKY I HAVE TO MUCH RESPECT FOR U GUYS BECAUSE OF CHASE I WASENT EVEN PLAYING MY HARDEST

Ex #1 from la salle the guy is one of the best athletes i played against but not being used in the right way also #10 hell of a player and #5

Hey #11, I think your last name is Edison…right. Well it takes guts to come on a blog and put your real name on here and say what you say. I give you respect. The only thing that was very frustrating is your coach should not allow you to make the decisions…No offense, but he has lived a lot longer and should realize how hard a team works to win. Personally I did not see the jv game, but 33 to 0 doesnt sound too bad to me, unless they were up 21 to 0 with four minutes left and kicked an onside to get it back. Ive talked to some of the players and they said it wasn’t bad on the field and the respect was there, on the varsity level…But in all my football time I have never seen an onside kick up three four five touchdowns with four minutes left. Thats when your coach should have stepped in and said no. If you the players were making the call to run it up, well than the coach has already lost control and my argument is pointless. It was just so sad that the game ended that way…I was in the parking lot at the end of the game and did not hear any racist comments, but either way it is unacceptable. I hope you, you personally have a good season. I still can not respect your coaches in any way. Good Luck.

  • WOW! Look at all the folks with BHD(Bush Haters Disease)! Talk about somebody not doin’ their job. NObama, I mean Obama(Oprah’s lap dog) has only been in in Congress doing his job about a grand total of 120 days, look it up! The rest of the time he’s been running for President. McCain can earned his time off after 20 YEARS of Congressional work. He’s gotten more legislation through than Obama will ever get through even if he becomes Commander in Chief. Heck, Gov. Palin has done more governmental work just in her state than Obama ever will!

The problem is that it can only power small devices such as a small lamp or small radio and the devices have to be modified just a little bit in order to step up the small amount of voltage thats in the telephone line.
