Star-Jibber: Time’s running out! Who’s still alive?

*Just thought I’d share this with you. Sam Farmer of the L.A. Times wrote a very inspiring story on Charlie Wedemeyer, who was diagnosed 31 years ago with ALS and told he had a year to live. Now, he guides players from sidelines in non-verbal language to his wife. Believe me, you will want to read this if you haven’t already. Truly inspiring.

*La Caada’s win over San Marino gives meaning to next week’s Monrovia- La Caada game. Is this easily our game of the week?

*FYI: Every time I’ve picked San Gabriel to win, they’ve lost. Every time I’ve picked them to lose, they’ve won. Who do I have in next week’s Almont League showdown pitting Schurr at San Gabriel? Undecided.

*What happened to PHS? They had this one. They had it! Someone on the blog mentioned there was no sense of urgency, but seriously, how is that possible with so much on the line?

*What happened to Arcadia? They were leading the Pacific League front-runner by six points before they let it slip away … This one’s probably the toughest game to swallow.

*Is there any more doubt St. Francis is the top team in the WSGV? No.

*La Salle coach Antoine Peterson sounded frustrated, exhausted and puzzled after Friday night’s loss to Mary Star. Peterson was hoping the Lancers would play with some sense of urgency, and the bye didn’t seem to help as some players showed rust.

*Isn’t Rio Hondo Prep the “feel good team” of the San Gabriel Valley? They hop on a bus to Viewpoint early Friday and head home in traffic late in the afternoon with a 40-0 win. And in case you’re wondering, Ken Drain is not just the head football coach. He’s also the school’s athletic director and boys basketball coach. Oh, and also the team’s bus driver. Rueben Thomas, move over. We have a new Mr. Everything taking charge.

*With Muir’s 25-0 win over Hover earlier this week, are the Mustangs’ playoff hopes still alive? At the very least, it’s looking like the Turkey Tussle will have more than just Braggin’ Rights on the line.

*Athlete of the week considerations: Temple City’s Justin Smith; San Gabriel’s Isaac Valdez; Monrovia’s De’Shawn Ramirez; and La Caada’s Rocky Moore. Picking one won’t be easy.

    Miguel-

Rovia-LAC is not your game of the week. If you think for one second Sparta has a chance against the Cats, you should fire yourself.

  • random

St Francis vs Alemany are the best teams in their division.

Game of the Week should go to them.

St Francis looked good without Dietrich Riley.
    thats scary.

  • Huckster!!!!!

M-Town vs.LC is about right as far as game of the week!

  • Goldenarm

San Gab put up 52 points on the Moors?
It is not like AHS did not know what the Mats were going to do…apparently they had no plan to a least partially shut it down. 3 hours….it must have been another officiating snafu

When after the game, you barely remember the refs…that is when you know a good game was called. I had almost forgotten that feeling. THERE WERE PENALTIES on both sides, but the refs did not take over the game and become “thee story”…putting the kids and the competition in the background like so many games recently. Way too many unneeded flags this year, incorrect calls, failure to correct bad calls, etc. Great job by last night’s ref crew…they even stuck around for awhile in darkness…and did not run for their cars in shame like the infamous Arcadia crew.

athlete of the week consideration: Austin Nieves, RB/WR/CB for the St. Francis Golden Knights. stepped in for an injured, dietrich riley and did a hell of a job. roughly 160 rushing yards on 7 carries, as well as big interception in the endzone to stop a score. kids a hard worker and showed what he’s worth last night. i hope he gets some recognition, or i lose all faith in you miguel..

    You Got to Be,
As funny as your blog was, and how you have a good point. beginning of league play, i was giving more love to LC than SM, becuz of the weak schedule of the titans. and LC has a big arm strong Quarterback that competes and has skills. But San Marino gave Monrovia all they had, but our defense was too Strong and Powerful when we needed it the most. And yeah they got that butt whipped by T.C. but their leading receiver was out…..so I think you gotta put that into play, that Monrovia-LC will not be like South Pas or even Blair. It will be one hell of a game. Do I think its the game of the week???? Im not sure yet about all that. I mean Shurr v. SG, Mon v. LC, Burbank V PHS, and even St. Francis v Alemany are all big games. but if I HAD to make the right smart choice….it’d be between SG Shurr v SG or St francis Vs. Alemany.

The SG vs AHS game was slow in the start, but wow did SG pack a punch. I didn’t expect a score like that. It was nice watching SG’s QB though. There was one particular play where he almost got sacked. He avoided it AND rushed for like 20 yards. He’s pretty darn good. To bad he’s not taller.

PHS had it? What? They were playing catch up the whole game. Pessy returned the opening kick 98 yards for CV and they never trailed. Never once did PHS “HAVE IT”. As far as a sense of urgency – they played in a no huddle offense through a majority of the 4TH quarter and scored two touchdowns in the last six minutes. Pasadena looked good. CV was just better. Bulldogs will beat Muir in the Turkey Tussle. Whovever fed you the info on the game was dead wrong!

  • Philly B.

I really think the big chase in the pacific league is a little more interesting. Cuz I dont think anybody couold of predict whose in the running to win league and whose is just trying to make a playoff berth. I mean Burroughs is undefeated in league only ranked 10th in the division. Burbanks ranked 4th and is also undefeated in league. Crecsenta Valley is ranked 5th in the division and only lost coming to Burbank. Who is going to win that league. Will it be a tie. What happens in rankings in the division when the season is over. Muir and Pasadena are fighting for their playoffs lives but are dying slowly. I didnt see that coming and im pretty sure not many other too

You can pretty much tell whats going to end up happening at the end of the season of the RHL. Monrovia wins league title outright again. T.C. barely ends up beating San Marino and getting 2nd place. #rd place may or not be a tie between SM and LC. they may have a tie breaker game. SM will be fighting for their playoff lives against T.C. but will then lose because of Smith’s QB play. LC’s in SM’s out Monrovia 1st T.C. 2nd. Miguel Save this and when it happens show me some credit please!!!!!

  • Huckster!!!!!

    Burbanksport,

This is the time of the year Im in love with! The Pacific League Title on the line for you guys, playoffs on the line for PHS and the Turkey Tussle looming with a possible playoff berth on the line! Damn, this some good drama! Im hoping Coach McFarland can mix the Red Bulldogs offence up and put a scorching on yawl Blue Bulldogs a$$es! I feel if our kids come to play, we can put together a good little winning streak and go into the playoffs feeling good with a possibility of upsetting a top seed!

    Let’s go “RED BULLDOGS”!!!!!

  • Huckster!!!!!

    Elias Buckwalter,

PHS was only in a no-huddle offence on the finale drive and thats why people felt there was no sense of urgency! If you know anything about football and your down three scores with 8 minutes left in the 4th quarter youre supposed to be in a hurry up offence! PHS was in the WING T running the offence like they were down by a touchdown! Urgency- means hurry the hell up! If you look at some of my earlier statements about the coaching, I clearly state, he has poor game management skills! We were at the same game, right?

As for PHS had it I think he might be talking about how PHS was in prime position to score more than twice, which wouldve put the game in Barnburner status! Maybe?

  • Hallelujah!

    Amen to that CK4L!

  • Football Fan

For all of you guys that said St. Francis only has Riley, your wrong. SF performed well without him. 34-7 isn’t to shabby.

  • The Stang Fan

Fellas, SF is the BEST team in the WSGV. And I don’t think it’s close. At least in terms of statement games.

I know, I have yet to see Monrovia, but my $$$ would be on SF…no way around it. Interior play was what stuck out to me, and this is NOT a one-man team. If SF vs. Alemany isn’t the game of the week it would be a crying shame. And don’t give me that local crap, you have the two best teams in a pretty tough division battling it out….and don’t forget there’s about 8 kids from Pasadena on the roster, so it STILL qualifies as local!

Again, the Tussle will be a FIGHT…there’s no doubt about it. But the opinion that PHS is guaranteed a win is a little baffling. Consider:

    PHS vs Arcadia: 19-14
    Muir vs Arcadia: 27-7

    PHS vs Burroughs: 12-37
Muir vs Burroughs: 6-9 (And held lead till end of 4th)

    PHS vs. Hoover: 21-13
    Muir vs. Hoover: 25-0

    PHS vs CV: 27-38
    Muir vs. CV 14-21

Again, I just don’t see how folks KNOW the Dogs will win for sure. Their defense was supposed to be their strength? They’ve given up WAAAAY more points in league than Muir has. Oh well, 2 more weeks….

  • Miguel Melendez

My thoughts and prayers go out to Jackson Allen and the rest of the Pasadena Poly football team. Allen sustained a serious head injury, causing him to go into coma. He was transported to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Our Nathan Cambridge reports in Sunday’s paper and I’ll update as soon as I can Monday morning, if not sooner.

    Stang Fan,

PHS and Muir played those games at different times, they were running different schemes and MORE Importantly, the team that is playing better football will go to the playoffs, the less one will not.

Rivalry games = anything can and will happen…

  • Huckster!!!!!

    Stang fan,

You have some valid points about the Dogs giving up a lot of points. I was the first one bragging on our D! Those teams that we both played in league were able to run on both of our teams! Here is where the difference is family! Muir has been used to having 1 great athlete and 2 to 3 good top notch athletes to bail them out of some sticky situations! Now, yawl coaches got to coach and some of your coaching deficiencies are being displayed in front of the world! You have no true Home Run hitter and things have been difficult this season (2-6)! Orimanine is what you hope to bail you guys out in a game, particularly the Tussle! Unfortunately, we got to many good players for that $hit! I will say, there is no guarantees of victory in any Tussles but Muir have found a way to win over the years! (Lucky, Muir Ive been a damn fool for the 1st part of my life or there wouldve never been a streak!) Bottom line is Muir has on running game and the Dogs do! Well win 27 7! DOGSHOUSE!

Huckster- Don’t know what game you were at but yeah I was at the PHS game. With eight minutes left CV had the ball – not PHS. PHS scored quickly on their previous possession – a 33 yard pass from Simpson to Escoe with 9:08 left. They scored so fast they didn’t need the no huddle on that drive. It was a pass though. CV then took possession and marched down the field and scored on a Cota pass to Bako with 5:49 left. Then PHS went to the no huddle and eventually scored on a pass to Tripling at the 2:08 mark. It was the only possession that they could have used the no huddle. The only one that made sense. Poor game management skills? Sorry you missed that one too. It was the turnovers that did them in- nothing about poor management. So yeah of course I know something about football – BUT not more than McFarland and he didn’t miss anything here. The kids have really bought into his system and they actually have shot to beat Muir. When was the last time they were in that position? CV was better- Simple as that. Believe me this is a lot better than the disaster better known as the Kevin Mills era.

  • MUIRFAN!

Funster! another one of those let down Fridays huh? dam, and you probably have another one coming this week. but o-well homie. See ya at the ARROYO!!!!! (not a high scoring game but enough to keep the ringing on the NORTHWEST side of PASADENA !) BIG BLUE ALL THE WAY

Should be an interesting game Thursday night. Both teams looking ahead to their rivalry games the following week.
You are right this is the exciting time of the season.

  • Huckster!!!!!

    Elias Buckwalter,

Ok, youre not a big fan of Mills and thats fine with me, but to say they have a better shot at beating Muir this year tells me your one of those missed informed HATERS! Only the first year of Mills tenure at PHS they had no shot of beating Muir! Lucky, for PHS this year, which they play the worst Muir team in their HISTORY, gives them a better chance of winning the Tussle and there is still no GUARANTEES! Im not a McFarland HATER either, but for him to know football so well, some of his coaching tactics are questionable to just down right stupid! I do take in account that he is a first year head coach. Im hoping the kids have bought into his system too, because PHS needs victorys on these next two Fridays! Im for Pasadena High School! Period! Whether its Mills or McFarland really doesnt matter to me! When youre a running team that can pass ok and your down by 3 scores you dont run the WING T! Period! That offence is not designed to play catch up football! Period! This is why I say, CV was not a better team! Just better coached!

I’d like to extend my thoughts and prayers to Allen and his family as well. Get well young fella!

    Hot Rod,

We talk about it all the time. Any given Friday. I obviously understand that much. However, the facts I presented were simply to counter the opinion that PHS was assured a victory over Muir. Muir has played the other league teams BETTER than PHS has. That’s a fact…ESPECIALLY defensively. The Huckster is the only person to offer up some sort of argument other than, “PHS will win.” Just food for thought, simple as that, and the truth is EITHER team can win this year….which hasn’t been the case in a LONG time, other than that ’07-’08 game.

    Huckster,

PHS will not score over 20 against Muir. Muir’s offense stinks, no doubt about it, but the D is good. It looks like this: Muir’s good D vs. PHS’s good O, and Muir’s bad O vs. PHS’s bad D. So what will it probably come down to? Hell, special teams of course!

    Final: Muir 12 PHS 7

  • viking fan

I am sure the Poly community and the Allan family certainly appreciate your kind words.

UPDATE: Debbie Reed, Poly’s head of school, said this afternoon that Allan is in critical but stable condition after undergoing surgery Saturday night. Reed said the family is asking that friends and classmates not come to the hospital in the next few days to protect the family’s privacy……

  • Goldenarm

Ive seen the field lights go out over a practice…but never over an actual game. It was a trip….because you could not even see the 22 kids on the field…the Taco Truck was the only lighted thing in the area and the PA was so muffled on the visitor side, if the dude said anyhing nobody could hear what it was.
I’m not sure if the coaches conferred with refs in the darkness and then somebody said “thats it” or what. You could not see anything.
The game was done pretty quick as TC scored 3 TDs in a hurry. Our QB can definitely run, at at times has thrown with incredible accuracy. Had Smith been tutored and QB camped, not skipped a year and concentrated solely on QB, no telling where his football life could have gone. The kid learns at a high rate and has the natural athleticism to make spectacular plays.
Overall, I don’t believe the coaches were happy with TC’s performance as a team.

  • SGV Football Fan

Another year that San Marino doesn’t go to playoffs after running through a soft pre-season schedule.

  • Where are you?

    O-Cat, Philly B., New York,
Any comments on how SF won without Riley? You said it couldn’t be done. Just wondering. Why the radio silence?

  • Huckster!!!!!

    Stang Fan,

Ok thats good assessment on how Muir could win, but you left out one critical ingredient! Muir cant run the ball! If Muir had a decent running game I would honestly be worried, but yawl DONT! All the playoff qualifying teams from the Pacific League will be able to run the ball efficiently and thats why Muir will not be one of them.

As for PHSs defensive problems, its merely due to being tricked on 3rd and longs for the most part! I would say its due to coaching, but the kids are being plain stupid! If your coach keeps telling you whats coming and you dont listen then youre going to get burned! Its simple as babys hand on the stove theory!

Oh, I used the word STUPID because the kids do read this blog and I communicate with them often explaining they ultimately have to be accountable for their play!

    Burbank 34 PHS 46!
    Muir 7 PHS 27!

    LETS GO DOGS!

  • Huckster!!!!!

    Where are you?

If they can beat Alemany with out D. Riley then they will have done something! Its at the end of the season, so playing with out your main horse could prove costly!

Is the Armon Binns kid who had 5 catches for 138 yards & 2 tds for Cincinnati this past saturday the same one who played for phs?

  • Observantcat

    SF FAN:

I never said that SF couldn’t beat anyone without Riley, Especially a team like St. Paul I think La Canada Could beat them without Riley. St. Paul has been struggling to get back on the Map for years. I believe that every game depends on all 11 players on O and D St. Paul would get blown completely off their field with Monrovia’s offense and completely stopped on Offense by Monrovia’s Defense. I think the Crespi score was something like 63-14 and Crespi had over 50 of those points by halftime. St. Paul may be well coached but have 0 talent. I still wish St. Francis the best this season, because if you take it all then you deserve it. But wishing Monrovia bad will not help. All of us Monrovia fans just with that we could put you on next years MENU. That would help bring you the truth why most fans think that this would be a great game. I just DONT THINK YOU GUYS COULD STOP OUR OFFENSE AND I THINK THAT OUR GUYS COULD STOP YOURS. That’s the name of the game!

  • New York

I typically don’t respond to call-outs, but what the heck.

I have never made any comment regarding SF as a one person team. I assume that SF would have at least one great player per class as well as several solid players. A USC offer suggests a talent beyond great.

I try not to bash other teams. Rather, I focus on praising my own team as well as the strengths of others.

I felt it would be redundant to restate my post from last week regarding #1 and #2. Go back and read it. I stand by that comment.

Did anybody confirm whether or not St Paul was in fact missing a bunch of starters? I think an SF guy mentioned that possibility. It does not matter to me but it sounded like an interesting piece of information.

Huckster- I’m not a “hater” as you put it at all. I’m not even a Pasadena fan or a Muir fan. Just a football fan. All I did was point out to you in detail about how you were incorrect regarding the Pasadena- CV game. I told you the times they scored and how they scored. They went to the no huddle when it was necessary when they finally got the ball back with a little over five minutes left. McFarland is a good coach – So is Howard. I just think Pasadena has a shot to win. But again – and hopefully this is the last time I have to tell you- Pasadena lost to CV because they turned the ball over not because of bad coaching. Before you call ME uninformed maybe YOU should get your facts straight. Oh and if you really are a Muir guy go check out Rueben “Bingo” Thomas at PCC. I’ve seen him a few times. He’s having a great year.

  • Football Fan

I have come to the conclusion that Monrovia Fans have no class.

  • Goldenarm

San Marino has a thing about 14.
    Last 4 games.

    SM beat San Gabriel 14 – 13
    SM lost to Monrovia 14 – 12
    SM beat So Pasadena 14 – 41
    SM lost to LaCanada 14 – 10

Temple City put up more points on M-town than ANY of Monrovia’s opponents, 21.
Problem was we turned over the ball, left our defense on the field too long and were finally staked through the heart by two incorrectly called penalties. Bottom line though, Monrovia played better and deserved the win.
Last year was worse, we outplayed the Wildcats and still lost 13-7. 13 1st half first downs, owned time of possesion and won the fight against Monrovia’s excellent defensive line. We had the last possesion in the 4th, put together a gutsy drive, got down to the 10 and had two open receivers in the end zone…and could not put it together as the clock ran out. That loss sticks to the ribs worse than this year.

The Rams need to get healthy, focus and fine tune in the So Pas homecoming game and get meaner and more aggressive for the San Marino RHL league closeout showdown.

Dont call out new york, or O-cat, becuz out of the three of us, I am the first one NOT to bite my tongue, and ill say what i think. But like O-cat said our offense is very good, and theres no way in hell that st. francis would destroy monrovia like you sf fans think. It’d be a good game, and i think we’d have a good chance to win!!

  • FN Champ

    Fellow bloggers–

I’m still here just a little less invested….son Trevor at Wartburg College in Iowa, NCAA DIII school. He is “threatening” to play there next year. He is having a great college experience thus far.

Be prepared for another Finchamp in HS next year–Hannah Rae. She owns EVERY meaningful triathlon record in the state of California and more. Odds favor Maranatha as her choice.

Nothing new about that RHP feeling Miguel however Scott Galetti had my son driving that bus a couple of years ago. They romp through Prep which does little to prepare them for the playoffs. There appear to be three or four very capable teams in this division of CIF. Some word floating around again that CIF is looking at possible realignment pushing RHP up again which is a poor idea. I do like their chances at a repeat…

  • BigFatFan

Philly B, just wanted to put in my two cents worth on the Monrovia fans. SP was beaten handily by Monrovia last friday. as my wife, son and I exited the field, we had to walk through the construction gauntlet by the Monrovia locker room. I’m wearing my SP hat and my son is wearing his SP lettermans jacket. You know what a crush this area is, we had to jockey between all the Monrovia players and fans, and NOT ONCE did a Monrovia kid make a derogatory comment or jeer or make any kind of wise cracks about the SP football team or fans as we wound our way through the crush of kids on the way to the car.

Secondly, the snack bar that was set up for the visitors was very nice, hot cooked food right there. finally, it was nice to be able to pay $3 for parking in one of the school lots, rather than to hunt up and own the streets for parking.

Of course I’d have like to have seen SP fight on a bit longer (seems like we ran out of gas in the second half), but the fan experience at Monrovia was very nice.

  • Anne Onimus

BigFF, I’m glad your Monrovia experience went well. I was wondering if you have any info on Bednarski. Is he injured? I was looking forward to seeing him play. Good luck to the rest of your season.

monrovia and tc don’t like each other. however, there were WAY more middle finger salutes, verbal taunts and meaningless brain dead insults at arroyo or rosemead this year….by far.
even the cheerleaders at arroyo were choosing off our players – who filmed the game from the Arroyo side, some dwarf size mini me vatos wanted a piece of our linemen and were talkin crap all night long, yelling about the white boys.
rosemead broke from their pregame warm ups and 4 or 5 of their players came over to taunt TC as they entered the field area….they got real quiet by the 3rd qtr however
I saw the m-town crowd at tc and san marino…that kind of behavior was not present on the field or in the stands. The game was very hard hitting – conversation was at a minimum

SP is hopeful that Bednarski can play this week against TC. he is recovering from a mild MCL sprain that occurred when a Blair lineman was blocked into his right knee a few weeks ago. I heard he has begun working out witht the team last week, but was not ready to go in full contact yet.

As crazy as the stereotypes go Monrovia is one of the classiest settings in the SGV. We have very dedicated fans who believe in winning fairly and taunting the other side goes against the grain. I’v been to many of games and never once have I seen a Monrovia fan give off any bad gestures to the opposing team or it’s fans.

Im glad that u can let it be known how monrovia fans and players are. I dont know why that is, but thats how it is for us. players and fans alike. I remember being on the bus when i was a freshman in the band and us leaving i forgot what school….i believe it was T.C. or south pas. but some fans thought it’d be funny to shoot our bus with paint ball gun!! We’re just not like that. We love our teams, but we never go overboard you know. I think the only time where u have to watch out is the monrovia-duarte game. That game can be rowdy on both sides. And yes I know about the crush area after the game and even during halftime at homecoming so I know where ur coming from.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

Yes, the AM/PM Rejuvenating Cream works almost magically on my dry skin. ITs very hydrating, I think since it has Hyaluronic Acid in it. I was researching products online with that ingredient after reading how great Hyluronic Acid is for "mature" skin, which tends to be dry, and found a review on Hydroxatone. I fell in love with the cream right away and it hasn’t taken long to see an improvement.
