Football: Cardinal Roger Mahony shows his true colors

Above: St. Francis' Dietrich Riley (4) intercepts a pass as Cardinal Roger Mahony watches from the sideline during Friday night's game against Notre Dame.

OK, you're not gonna tell me you weren't surprised by what happened at halftime of the Notre Dame-St. Francis game. No, not me taking a good fall with the bench. During halftime, the announcer welcomed Cardinal Roger Mahony. The visiting and home crowds gave Mahony a welcoming applause. When it was done, the announcer wondered who Mahony was cheering for to win, but then suggested Mahony might want to instead keep that answer to himself. Without hesitation, Mahony looked up to the St. Francis crowd and pointed to the Golden Knights sidelines, prompting the standing-room only home crowd to erupt in cheers. Perhaps it was a bad omen. St. Francis lost, 28-24, in the waning minutes.

From Bishop Amat Football program:

"Ive witnessed Almany, Crespi and Notre Dame play this season and they are good and well coached, but not the same teams as they were a few short years ago(last year). Amat will need to play like they have been on defense and step up the offense a notch or two. Amat has a great chance of a undefeated season!

Great job representing the SGV!"

These people Arrogant or what?

This moron can't even spell Alemany! That's the La Puente Education for you!!! :-)

Daniel Murphy high school in the Los Angeles area was closed recently. It was closed down at the same time that the $660 million dollar settlement was announced to pay the abuse victims. Actually several school closures were announced at the same time. The scholarship funds that many area Catholic schools use to fund tution reductions to low income families that want their children to get a Catholic education was slashed in half.

The $660 Million had to and has to come from somewhere. If anyone follows Steve Lopez's column in the Los Angeles Times then you would know that Cardinal refuses to acknowledge that there ever was a problem and refuses to speak to Mr. Lopez.

One wonders then why a $660 Million settelement was paind out if nothing that horrific happened in the first place.

His showing up at the game was a distraction. Apparently someone in the crowd yelled out "keep your kids by your side" as he walked by and the crowd cheered. Not a very glowing review for the man nor his ministry.

The parents of Daniel Murphy school also pledged that on their own they would still pay an extra $1,000 per student for tuition. The school refused to even have a meeting with the parents. The school shut down and supposedly the land will be sold.

The Los Angeles Times did a story on it. I am sure that you can verify the facts.

So ignorant, as the name states, is what you unfortunately are. The Archdiocese borrowed BIG against properties and schools from many banks just to satisfy the hundreds of millions of lawsuits it had to pay because of Mahony's ignorant stand. It had to close two just in the last year because the notes were up and it was time to collect. There is an inside joke that the Bank of Ireland actually owns the Los Angeles Archdiocese

Well, there's one Angel Mahony won't be praying too.

What information does angel bec have to support that claim about rising tuition and closures? Many of the schools that are raising tuition are reacting to the rising costs of education not the cost of supporting lawsuits. Many of the school closures are a result of the economy too. Parents just simply cannot afford to keep their kids in school even in a stable tuition environment.

With all of the drama and trauma that this individual has caused for the area as a whole I could care less what side he stands or sits on. He should learn to be more forthcoming so maybe the Church wouldn't be paying out of it's nose for sexual abuse settlements and in turn that forcing some Catholic schools to have to close and others having their tuition soar.

The man should have more sense and stop stepping into the spotlight.

Years ago I was on the sideline of a St. Francis vs Loyola game. Cardinal Roger Mahony was there and I asked him why was he on St Francis sideline and not Loyola?? His answer.. I go on the side that wins the coin toss for the first half and at half time I change sides.....
