Star Picks: Alhambra and San Gabriel renew rivalry in the Almont League while La Cañada and San Marino square off in a key Rio Hondo League game.

The Stang Fan last week: ?????
Melendez last week (overall): 15-2 (81-47-1)

Last week: My lone losses were Bell Gardens (lost to San Gabriel) and Marshall (lost to Kilpatrick).

This week: Got this interesting comment from cant believe it!

ALL I WANT TO KNOW IS........WHY WEEKEND AND WEEK OUT DO U JUST TALK ABOUT TC? THEY DONT WIN! THEIR NOT THAT GOOD BUT UR ALWAYS ON THEIR JOCK!! HELLO! THERE IS OTHER TEAMS OUT THERE! BUT NO ALL WE EVER SEE IN THIS STUPID PAPER IS TC TC TC TC TC!!! MAN GET SERIOUS!! TALK ABOUT SOME OTHER TEAMS WITH SOME TALENT!! I MEAN U NEED 2 CHANGE UR NAME 2 TC MELENDEZ OR TC MIGUEL! DID U PLAY 4 THEM? DOES UR SON, NEPHEW, COUSIN, BROTHER PLAY 4 THEM? I MEAN SERIOUS! ENOUGH ABOUT TC ALREADY!!! ITS REALLY BORING AND PLAYED OUT!!

My response?

You nailed it! I was a star defensive end at Temple City under the Mooney Era and my son and nephew were on the team. Even my daughter was a water girl!

Obviously, I was being sarcastic. I never went to Temple City and I don't have any sons or daughters, why would I? I do, however, find it funny when people try to figure out where I went to school according to the teams I cover. In fact, if not for some you who read my bio when it was announced I would take over Galleti, you might not even know where I went to school. For the record, I went to eight schools growing up, and to this day I have no idea why. I never asked and I don't plan to. On that note, I bring you this week's game of the week: San Gabriel at Alhambra. The Matadors look to improve to 3-0 in Almont League action while the Moors look to go one game above .500. I'm going with the Moors, but more on that later this week. San Gabriel still has Schurr and Montebello on its schedule while Alhambra has it a bit easier with Bell Gardens and Kepppel; all are home games for SG and Alhambra. In the Rio Hondo League, the winner of the La Cañada-San Marino game improves to 2-1 and increases its chance at a possible second-place finish, though Temple City will have something to say about that when it meets San Marino later this season. The St. Francis-St. Paul game has been switched to St. Francis. Dietrich Riley, who was injured in last week's win over Loyola, is expected to play. Upset of the week honors go to Pasadena. They'll beat CV, 28-21. C'mon, who really expected to see a double-wing last week? Eh? Eh?

MM,

Congrats....you finally got me last week. I finished at 14-3 and had very close losses with Muir and Loyola. Here are this week's picks:

Muir over Hoover (To have people even JOKE that this game will be close, tells you about the type of season the Stangs are having. I know PHS only beat Hoover by a touchdown, but that's not happening tonight.)

Alhambra over SG (Again.....)

SM over LC (Possible playoff birth on the line)

Burbank over Arcadia (VERY weird to see Muir and Arcadia combine for a whopping 2 wins in the PL after four weeks.)

TC over Blair (Again.....)

M-town over SP (Again.....)

CV over PHS (Will PHS run the wing again? Maybe they should have saved it for CV instead of....Glendale???)

SF over SP (Everyone is waiting for the Alemany showdown)

Mary Star over LS

Azuza over Duarte

Gabby over MV

The Natha over SC

The Mead over SEM

CH over Marshall

RHP over Viewpoint

BG over Keppel

Webb over FP

BT over Cantwell

Chadwick over Poly

it is just an educated guess ... my reasoning being that Sm hasnt given up more than 14 in a game and that 14 was to monrovia who's offense is far more explosive than LC's. Any team can score when a team makes mistakes but Sm defense has had few that have led to big plays there secondary has a ton of senior leadership with yortsos at safety with seasoned corners as well .... LC has to run the ball to keep it close. I dont know much about LC Defense but i dont think they will have the same result as Monrovia did against SM offense we will score its a matter if LC can keep up

Spartan guy......the shurr team is honestly really big, but not that good! u guys where 2x2 bigger than the moor team and u guys barely beat them! the moors r small and the QB really sucks!~~ im sorry 2 say that but u guys should of really blew the moors out! on the other hand like i said the QB is really bad! he lobs everything up in the air, he cant throw a hard ball at all and the sadest thing of all.......the coaches are really, really bad! the coachs blew the game! u have them throwing the ball on double and tripple coverage 2 a guy like crockem who is really not that good of a reciever if u dont put it right in his hands. their best reciever by far is that kid Becerra! and u only go 2 him 2 times in the game.....r u freakin serious? that is why the moors lost! not cuz shurr was a better team! thy really arent a better team, thy r bigger but not better!~ this kid Becerra has won 2 come back from behind games 4 them and tell me why coaches...why? u only go 2 him 2xs in the game? (this kid makes things happen and makes big plays) isnt that a quote from his own coach? hello coach flores!!! practice wht u preach!! bad, bad,bad play calling!! go 2 Becerra in the SG game and i guarentee tht u dont lose this game at all!! but play like u did agaisnt shurr and u lose! if it wasnt 4 Becerra in the montebello game moors lose! practice wht u preach coach, practice wht u preach!!! Becerra wins the game 4 thm if the darn QB can at least stop throwing interceptions!!!

What are you delusional? or just obvious?
LC vs SM will be a close game. SM comes in with a heavy ground game and a decent passing attack as well as a solid D. They have the advantage but LC isn't some push over team like South Pas and blair and even LC teams of the past. LC has an explosive offense that is one SM mistake away from taking it to the house. LC will come to play we know its a rivalry game and what is at stake.

Lets go spartans!!!

Titan sports Fan said:

The LC @ SM is a huge rio hondo league game that will be a lot of fun to watch. It's LC's biggest game of the year there rivalry game so SM will get there best effort. LC in the end wont have any way of stopping SM offense that comes into the game completely healthy with a revamped offensive line that shuffled people around last week and could have put up close to 70 on south pas last week. If LC is too have any chance its in a shoot out which i dont see likely with SM defense. SM wins by three touchdowns is my educated guess right now

Curious george i can tell you that i wouldn't back anyone up who speaks in nothing but insults. And im sure that the alhambra faithful are not condoning what you say either, they have a lot more class. Unfortunately its your own fans that have had the most criticism. You are probably one of those fans that talks behind the coaches backs when things go bad, and congratulates them when things go right. I hear guys like you everytime i go to a high school football game. Its too bad. Hopefully your son is a senior so people don't have to listen to you anymore.

curiousgoerge said:

True Spartan,

If this "Kick off Clown" wasn't on your staff
I highly doubt that you would even be worried about my
response. I will no longer respond to any Spartan garbage,
calling out names and bashing coaches?
Then your speaking for this bozo and calling me
the coward?
I am not a coach, my son plays, so i'm at practice
on 4th st. 2-3x a week i'm sure you know where thats at.
Schurr game is HISTORY you guy's won and that is that.
The Moor's are focusing on the next game and taking em'
one game at a time.

a true spartan said:

This message goes out to curious george and "spartan kick off" guy. I hope that the Alhambra people aren't falling for this Spartan bloggers crap. He is only trying to get a rise out of you, and it seems to be working. I am sure that curious george is not a Moor coach as i know that "spartan kick off" is not a schurr coach. If anything needs to be addressed to any staff i assure you that it will be done in person since all the coaches seem to get along on a professional level. The schurr/alhambra game is history and they will not meet again. This is a rivalry week for both teams and i am sure that they have their hands full trying to get a victory. Focus on the true rivalries, the crosstown ones. But "curious george" talks like he is pretty mad. Well you should direct your challenge to whoever you would like to in person, not on a blog you coward. Thats why i know these guys aren't coaches cause they keep shouting threats online. I think it might be something another coach is doing to keep the focus off them. Please respond curious george i am excited about reading another well written response from you.

curiousgoerge said:

Spartan coach,

If your preaching to your kids that Montebello
is KEPPEL than I hope the Oilers can use your
cocky attidudes(Don't know why cause you guys are not
as good as the tortas you eat)then maybe they can use
that as motivation to beat you guys Friday.
Our game was two weeks ago coach, what are you worried
about the Moors for focus on what you guys need to do
and hopefully(I pray to God) we will see you guy's again
in the play offs as far as were concerned I won't be responding to your nonsense til that day comes.
That Midvalley interview when the Schurr OC summed it up
best,"We got lucky"! Ha
Keep barking torta and worry about what you need to do.
WOW! South Pas put up 40 on Keppel...Spartans 28? Hmmmm
p.s. My name is George Gonzales not Gilbert since your
one of those(rat) name caller's, what is your's homey?

Spartan "Kick off team" said:

Yes we did have to come from behind to beat a team that was said to be the almont league champs....lol NOT...... NOPE NOT THIS YEAR..LOL NOT LAST YEAR SHIII I CANT REMEMBER the last time...we didnt come from behind your QB gave us the game.... "pick 3" oh ya!! then we came "stight up" and BLASSSSSTED mr. cazz and layed him out!!!!! 2 losses in league for u after theis friday..maybe CIF will give mr rudyflores a going away gift and give him the ATLARGE BIRTH...hahahahahahahah

Miguel,
Did Pasadena run the Don Markham version of the double-wing or was it more similar to the Air Force Academy? Didn't CV used to run that offense as well?

YOU BEAT ME TO THAT PUNCH LINE! YES SCHURR BEAT ALHAMBRA. BUT COMMON SPARTANS YOU GUYS HAD TO COME FORM BEHIND!! QUOTE, FROM A SPARTAN COACH, ''WE THOUGHT WE WERE GOING TO RUN ALL OVER YOU GUYS, BUT YOU SCARED THE HELL OUT OF US'' IT WAS ONE HELL OF A GAME WITHOUT A DOUBT SCHURR WANTED THAT MORE BUT AGAIN. EASILY ALHAMBRA WOULD HAVE WON WITH BETTER PLAY CALLING. THATS NOT AN EXCUSE ITS A FACT! I'VE STATED THIS BEFORE! ''ANYONE WHO KNOWS ALHAMBRA FOOTBALL KNOWS THE PLAY CALLING IS BAD!'' SO MAYBE YOU SPARTAN PEOPLE SHOULD WORRY ABOUT BEATING MONTEBELLO AND B.G. INSTEAD OF TALKING. THE MOORS CAN GET A WIN OVER SAN GABRIEL. IT WILL BE ONE HELL OF A SHOOTOUT THATS FOR SURE.

BTW, SCHURR ONLY PUT UP 27 POINTS ON KEPPLE, HMMM STRUGGLED?

GO MOORS!!!

Sam32 said:

Hey Spartan "Jack ass team"

You write on here like Schurr didn't have to come from behind to beat Alhambra. If Schurr was all that then they shouldn't have had to come from behind. I hope Montebello beats Schurr so you can shut your punk @$$ up. Go Moors!

Hey Miguel,

Yes its true. You do gush and ball wash over TC and Coach White. "Breaking News:White...over 80 players at meeting...hires best staff ever...hired at TCUSD..." White is not Maddox. Maddox left West Covina with best wishes and good luck. Not so sure about White. Also, there is at least two to three factual errors in your stories. Prime example; Deshawn Ramirez is a sophomore, not a freshman and we all know it but you. The TC/M-town score at 1/2 time was what? Was it 21-17 or 21-14? Then there is a little heat on the TC coaching staff and Prado cries on the blog. Zeke, we all know that coaches put in tons of hours and get little credit/respect. It is the nature of the beast except now it is online and not at the barbershop or local tavern. So Miguelito and Zearino, as Bill Murray said in Stripes, "thats the fact, Jack!"

Goldenarm said:

San Marino played bare bones fundamental football and were one play away from overtime and a legitimate shot at beating the Division's #1 team.
Though Monrovia looked flat and lethargic after the bye, the Titans gave little respect and did well against a stubborn, non-creative M-town running game...and played a strong 4th quarter defensively.
At 6-1 with everyone healthy SM has got to be called the RHL runner up at this stage of the season.

Any one who saw both games knows TC played a different M-town. The Rams had their chances as well, and were smothered by a couple crucial mistakes/turnovers and at least two game changing officiating errors. (the film tells no lie on Torres incomplete pass...which was picked up and run in as a TD by M-town)Either way, anytime you have 3 INTs, those are demoralizing, drive ending plays and fresh opportunities for the opponent. Hopefully the Rams learned vital lessons.

Rocky Moore is going to need help in the way of defensive stops and the LC special teams must create some havoc and not waver in their own assignments. Yoder must do his best prep job for the Spartans. The Titans will be out of their funk following the M-town loss and looking to hit early and hard. LC better be ready for a whole lotta Hung.
Like I said 8 weeks ago, San Marino is not soft and definitely not gutless on the line of scrimmage this year. Converse really looked good against M-town. SM's coaching staff has done everything in getting the most out of their players. This is a good game of the week - wish it was on a Thursday.

Goldenarm said:

does anybody have the background on why the Blair/TC game shifted from PCC to Lincoln Ave???

Was it for the BBQ?

I like the lighting on the Stang home field, it allows a clean, clear view of play. It is a nice set up. Heard the players like the surface as well, but maybe Stang Fan has heard different from Stang players. Last time I was there parking was $, but street parking was avail, fairly close if you got there early.

PCC would have been fine...closer to the homeland, but it beats driving to Brawley.

Nigel, Dont write off Maranatha. They dropped the first two games as new schemes were being introduced. Even with those losses the games could have gone either way. Every game since, they are getting better. They are a "cute" team that has heart. Undefeated in League please look for this team to go deeper into CIF playoffs than most of the other 9 teams listed above them.

SM LC game of the week. Why? If SM wins they clinch playoffs and eliminate LC (with a SM win over Blair and a LC lost against M-Town, both very likely). However if LC wins, things get interesting as SM must be TC to force a three way tie for second. Easy game of week

My prediction for Friday night's shootout
between AHS vs SG.
Talk about a cross town rivalry it doesn't get
any bigger than this.
SG will be hosting the Moors on their brand new
field and taking part in their homecoming.
The stage is set for Friday night and i'll say
it again, SHOOTOUT!
I still believe that Moor's size and speed
at the skill position will be too much for
the Matador's defense. On the other hand, Valdez
has gotten his troop's going on all cylinders after
putting up 49 pts on BG. The fact of the matter is,
the Moor's defense is jelling just at the right time
and their speed will be the factor in the end.
No matter what it will be a great rivalry game
as always. Moor's pull away 42-27 for the "W"!
