Star-Picks: Rio Hondo League showdown at Temple City

| | Comments (48) |

The Stang Fan last week: 12-1 in Friday's games
Melendez last week (overall): 10-6 (66-45-1)

LAST WEEK: The Stang Fan (aka TSF) was on a roll last week. And talk about a roll of the dice -- I picked PHS to beat Burroughs; Brentwood to beat Maranatha and La Salle to beat Verbum Dei. Those picks were way off. Alhambra's loss was a close one but Bosco Tech's and El Monte's loss wasn't so much. And don't get me started on St. Francis. Great game and all, but they had it. THEY HAD IT! ... Just wanted to answer to my boy The Lancer, who unsuccessfully tried getting me to attend La Salle vs. Verbum Dei on Saturday night. I had planned to attend the game after I read your comment. But I wasn't anticipating a 15-hour work day Friday. By the time I got home at 1:30 a.m. I was exhausted, but I had to get up early to pick up my little sister so I could take her to her first UCLA football game. Sitting under the hot sun didn't help. I looked at the clock and it was 6:30 p.m. when I texted our correspondent for directions to St. Matthias. In the end, I was just way too tired. I'm sorry to hear Verbum Dei was classless. Yes, classless. Running up the score and the starters still playing late in the game? Unbelievable.

THIS WEEK: There's no question about it, the game of the week belongs to the Rio Hondo League showdown Friday night. Bring your binoculars and a stop watch because a lot of speed will be on display Friday night at Temple City High when the host Rams (3-2-1, 1-0) take on the No. 1 (No. 2?) Monrovia (6-0, 1-0) Wildcats. Does it get any better than this? This is like Leno vs. Letterman. Jay-Z vs. Nas. Kobe vs. LeBron. Bueno vs. Ruckle. I don't mean to disregard the rest of the team because we can spend the day dissecting Temple City's and Monrovia's roster, but to be honest I'm excited to see how Max Ruckle and Nick Bueno will try to out duel each other. The lone trap is each of them trying to do too much. They must stay the course just like Bueno did against San Dimas and Rosemead and Ruckle against Arcadia and La Canada. This game is so good I'm thinking of bringing my boy who is a huge 49ers fan. He's a fan of speed, so why not this game, right? For a second ... (JUST A SECOND!) ... I almost picked Temple City beating Monrovia, but I couldn't pull the trigger. I'm still a bit confused about what happened with Monrovia last week. Maybe I provided bulletin board material for San Marino. Not sure. Maybe the Titans are just that good. Maybe I need to give them the credit they deserve. I'm all about spreading the love, and maybe after Friday's valiant effort San Marino deserves a second look. I leave it up to you to try and figure out the best way Temple City can stop Monrovia. Is there an upset in the making after last week's results? Yeah, try figuring that out. If not for a season-ending injury to Loyola star running back/child-turned-man Anthony Barr, I would have gone to see St. Francis vs. Loyola. Are you kidding me? Dietrich Riley going heads-to-head with Anthony Barr, another stud fielding offers left and right, including UCLA. I'll take SF by 14.

Coach Behavior - Let's discuss. HS sports is like college/pros but even worst sometimes. Coaches get fired after one season because parents/alumni/administrators want to Win. College scholarships at D1 schools are worth over $100,000. Donors contribute major dollars for winning football teams. This is big business and don't fool yourself otherwise.

I'm parent of former LS students and when I saw the score I said wow, Verb is a powerhouse with legitimate talent. This is the 1st league game and an intimidating score for future opponents and LS. Charles accounting for 7 scores puts him on line for D1 schools.

HS Football is no longer sportsmanship, it's business and we only have ourselves as parents/alumni to blame.

Too tough to call on TC-Monrovia game. Should be a battle.

The Stang Fan said:

Muir over CV (Should be a good one. Both teams need it....obviously. If Muir can finish drives they win comfortably. But "if" my aunt had a ________ she'd be my uncle, right?)

Monrovia over TC (After last week's 2-point win over SM, I REALLY wanted to go with TC here...BUT that's exactly why M-town will win tonight. They finally played a team that could give them a battle and they will now be the better for it.)

Loyola over SF (SF fans, TRUST me....I wanted to go with the G-Knights SOOOOOOO bad. However, the boys on the hill might be in for a letdown after last week's tough loss at home. I know Loyola is hurting without their stud, but they still found a way to pummel Chaminade last week, who is a much better team than the last few years. I will NOT be surprised, however, if SF ends their LOOOOOOOONG losing streak to their bitter rivals at "Loyola U.")

PHS over Glendale (If this game is as close as the game PHS had with Hoover....well, then ALL that Tussle talk will definitely die down.)

Alhambra over Montebello (Can't get over their Schurr hump, and will have more difficulty with Montebello than the past few years...though they pull this one out.)

Burroughs over Arcadia (Looks like back-to-back playoff absences for the Apaches, and it may be the beginning of some more tough times....man, how times have changed.)

LC over Blair (A Blair TD will be a victory)

The MEad over MV

Arroyo over Gabby

Schurr over Keppel

The Natha over MP

Kilkpatrick over Marshall

BG over SG

RHP over Chadwick

Poly over FP

VD over BT

Alhambra over Montebello

GoTeamGo: that was a sad recounting of LS's encounter with VD. I guess that is more reason to get La Salle into the Rio Hondo League and toss Blair to the curb. with SP beating Blair, I can only surmise the VD coaches will want to schedule us and the rest of the RHL teams next year, so they can "teach us a lesson". ha ha.

Blair is quite bad again this year, along the line of "Duarte-bad". so I dont see them winning a single game this season. the only reason the score with SP was close, was due to a Blair kid wacking our QB in the knee and taking him out of the game, early in the second quarter. we were up 20-0 and rolling for another score at the time of the injury and ready to score once again.

I have to agree with goteamgo with the notion that the actions of Verbum Dei were very classless.....As mentioned, its obvious Verbum Dei has no regard for sportmanship whatsoever.....I mean cmon let us be real here, this is high school football.......this is not the pros, this is not even college ball....Obviously the coaching staff at Verb has failed to realize that and has taken the dignity away from the high school game.....Those coaches need a reality check in sportmanship and need to wake up and smell the coffee, that its just a game. Let the boys play, and realize when enough is enough...no need to run up scores.

That being said....La Salle, great effort....and i hope this Saturday my Tigers will bring the hat to Verb! and do it while displaying sportmanship....the way it should be!

In past years, Monrovia's d-line was tested by Temple City's pounding. This year will be interesting. Continual pass-rushing can be very exhausting as well. Monrovia's secondary will be plenty tested.

I take the 'Cats in a well-played battle.

going by memory only, I think lifetime it is 14-12-1 TC, something like that.

right now the only one that matters is Friday.

m-town spilled over the SM visitor stands - I would expect an even larger turnout on both sides friday.
the kind of game and atmosphere we need in the SGV!

For those who have not yet seen the Rams - it is a whole new face on Ram football.

New York said:

Philly and Goldenarm,

The buildup for this game is always exciting, even when the actual game does not turn out to be. In 2006 somebody posted an article that detailed the results of this game. There have been some great battles as well as some lopsided victories/losses. I think Monrovia won the first couple matchups when we first joined the RHL in the early 1980s, but then TC dominated the series until 1995 when Monrovia went on a streak, but then Mooney's return as head coach tilted it back toward TC.

Monrovia's early success may have lead to a situation where our starters were not conditioned to play four full quarters. That was pretty much the case for TC in 1996 when TC was 8-0 and Monrovia ended up beating TC.

Hopefully, San Marino conditioned us to play four quarters.

The other thing with Monrovia, maybe we learned that Monrovia is best when the schedule is not disrupted. Rusty game against Arcadia (possibly due to the fires) and rusty game against San Marino (possibly due to the bye-week). Regardless, we must give credit to San Marino. They are 5-1 and have done a great job all season.

Yortsos was silent until that play in the 4th 3rd and 23 from near the goal...he got behind the defense and had to come back for an underthrown ball, still managed to make the reception though. Good D on SM's premier wide out.

Philly B, O cat

I can't believe it is week 7 already! I got gut rot nervousness already for the M-town game this Friday, thing is , you just never know how it will start, flow and end. Sometimes you are pretty close in seeing it - this year with everything different at TC - I am smart enough to not even wager a guess.
Common opponent scores are very close, but really mean little since both TC/Mtown ran subs late in the game.

Our JV coaches know the rivalry well but the new crew??? They know it from a distance only. Our seniors will keep it alive and let all the young bucs know this is far from any ordinary game!! Of course, once they see Ellis McCarthy come out of his 3 point, they will see this is no ordinary opponent.
For our OFFENSIVE LINE, this is a signature game. Hopefully the kids will get a chance to get downfield and run block, and I pray somebody puts a hat on Lowden, otherwise #55 will be imprinted on Ruckle, making his jersey read 558. Ruckle has played tremendously week in and week out - given only a shred of light to run into...we need to give him a better path to the goal line.
See ya Friday

Goldenarm,
I cant agree with you more. I believe San Marino did give us a scare, and I hope and pray that, the play calling goes back to normal to where we've had success against the likes of rosemead and san dimas. If our defense comes with it, and gives t.c.'s QB a couple of hits, it should be a long night. for the rams. But the RHL league after t.c. and monrovia is weak, soft whatever you wanna call it. I thought La canada was gonna make some noise early, but t.c. wasnt having any of that. I think with the injury of south pas's Qb. Im looking for a three-way tie between South pas, San marino, and LC. I dont know who's gonna come out in third place on that one! you are also right, you will not see the same green and white come friday. This is for basically the league title, this is a rivalry game!!!! Every year, no matter the outcome its a rivalry!!! And with it being at your house, I can only remember once or twice where the cats were able to get a win in t.c. New york can maybe help me with that. Our secondary is very fast and they like to make tackles which i love that in a DB. but I saw some of t.c.'s DB's they look pretty tall, but i dont know how fast they are. But I cant wait for this game, it should be a good. Good luck to both teams. even though i hate ya, i respect ya t.c.

My hats off to the coaching staff and the players. I believe Benny Hung really made a "huge" difference in the game.Hung was the missing component of the running game in the San Gabriel game. The game plan was outstanding and well executed.

Did anyone else notice Bueno at CB one on one with #4? I am a very biased M-Town fan. This being said,"The D-line for Monrovia was in the backfield all night and failed to make plays while the QB managed to." I think the passing game for Monrovia was a non factor due to the drops in the game. I have not seen TC play only listened to GA's comments and he appears rather humble, which intrigues me.

Win or lose against TC,it will not be due to lack of preparation.

Good Assessment GA:

I feel that practice is over for the Cat's offensive plans, either we're going to live with what got us here or die by what got you guys here. I feel that Our Defense will stand the chance of time, our Offense should improve traumatically this Friday if we utilize all of the Backfield the way we began the preseason. I think someone was trying out Nick's passing game last week and Nick didn't quite look comfortable trying to cover new waters. I know that TC and White will come with their A game and if you give them an opportunity to run with it, it could be a long night. All in all I feel the Wildcats will come out prepared to do battle for this league crown. We are 95% healthy and 100% geared up to play so if everything is working on all cylinders then I have to root strongly for the Cats to pull this one off. BUT GA! I'm prepared as can be for any surprises!!! I think that this game will be the banner game for the regular season heading into the playoffs. Good Luck to Both teams from hear on out.

people, people....comon
Monrovia has an off game and suddenly they are vulnerable to this, that and the other thing? San Marino had the game laid out before them, but were not able to reel it in-the reason- an M-town defense that is fundamentally sound and has several stellar athletes on it....all of which made the plays needed to thwart San Marino when they had to.

It was obvious Maddox was stubbornly and nearly disastrously determined to run, run and run again. Even with the 1st half break to think about it, M-town came out after half and went right back to consecutive strings of running plays, using the two legged battering ram #6, Johnson. He is a load supreme.
San Marino was dug in and did a stand up job defending. When Bueno rolled out, he had the universe before him, and either got a decent run or threw a completion....but he rolled out maybe twice all night.

Rarely do I criticize a coach and team I respect so much, but play calling was unimaginative, did not reflect the defensive alignment before him and in the end, wholly non-effective for the M-town offense. Parts of the equation may lie with the bye drying up the Monrovia oil and parts may be poor execution - but the rest lies with the mindset and preparation of the Titans, who were prepared, schooled and usually in the right place to make a play. Credit the SM staff...a top notch bunch.

As far as TC, we will not see the same green and white this Friday, that is assured. M-town fans say what you will, but SM put a scare into the Divisions' #1 rated team...an eye opener ...that just walking through the "soft" RHL is no given thing.
TC will see the same ground pound, but not see a talent like Bueno being generally silent in the background, more carries...more passes...and an effort to spread the field to deploy the multiple scoring capabilities the Cats have.

We have to give our QB time and give Ruckle a seam, neither an easy thing with the likes of Lowden, Hagerty, McCarthy and the many fast dudes that comprise the M-town secondary. We don't turn it over - we got a shot.
Go Rams!!

To the Verbum Dei supporters below:

I was one of the La Salle fans scratching my head wondering why Verbum Dei (VD), a school which we have always held in high regard (and which one of our teachers volunteered numerous hours at), and never had an ax to grind against would show a total lack of class in our recent game. For those that were not there, VD had a 42-28 lead with 8 minutes left in the game. For the last 8 minutes they then kept their starters in for the rest of the game, went for onside kicks, ran long pass plays to score quickly rather than use a running game to eat up the clock, went for 2 point conversions upon scoring, and at the end of the game their coach ran off the field, refusing to shake hands. The score looks worse than it was – 21 points were scored by VD in the last 8 minutes.

The explanation below for this behavior from the VD supporters, if I understand correctly is 1) the coaching staff at Blair came from Verbum Dei; 2) one of the coaches at Blair has a nephew at VD, and 3) because La Salle beat Blair, VD wanted “revenge” due to the family connections. Now VD wants “revenge” on Bosco Tech because they beat Blair.

That is the most immature and idiotic excuse I have ever heard. GROW UP!! Blair has some good kids, they can fight their own battles, and play their own games. If VD was playing Blair, what would they do? Play all “nicey nice” and let them win?

If I were the La Salle coaching staff I would have taken the team off the field, rather than put up with that b***s***. VD did not come to play football, they came to belittle and humiliate.

They may have won a football game, but they lost a lot more, like respect.

Great analogies. Obviously monrovia is jay-z all the albums and t.c. is nas great lyricist, but not all the recognition. The Monrovia vs Temple City game should be a great game. I think the rams have a good shot at getting the W this week but it won't be easy. Temple City's defense has to play assignment football and stay discipline. If they load the box and take away the run thats the only thing that the cats have.

Haha. There's Jay-Z and then there's everybody else. Is that the case with Monrovia? We will soon find out.

Should be another stellar Rio Hondo match up this week. Let's see if that was a kink in the armor last week or if the Cats have shook off the rust. This is their last semi-tough game, as it should be smooth sailing after this week.

I'm interested in seeing the outcome...would love to make but it looks like I can't get down there Friday. Please keep a brotha informed during the game...coughs, purty please Goldenarm?

LC is the better team, but is coming off of some tough losses. On the other hand, Blair finally got the close loss (not "moral victory") that they have been looking for. Blair is playing loose, with nothing to lose.

Anyone else think Blair may win this week? :(

Melendez, how can you only be 66-45, that's absolutely terrible. Your picking winners without any betting lines and your barely 65 percent, that's unreal for someone who should know his area football teams. More than half of these picks are automatic gimmies, if you can't pick 80 percent or better, something's wrong with you. BTW, was the Chadwick-Rio Hondo Prep game so difficult that you couldn't even decide???? C'mon man, start paying attention.

If the TC coach will listen to me and run some no huddle offense, they will draw so many penalties and missed assignments, they will have all the mistakes they will ever need to win the game.

Further, if you run more plays, on a quicker pace Monrovia will fade faster than a bride's bouquet at a $10 wedding. Their talent will shrink faster than a ten cent pair of swap meet socks.

Why no pick regarding the 1st place match up of Chadwick and Rio Hondo. Both are undefeated.
I think the rush on the Chadwick QB will be too much for Chadwick to handle. Carson the defensive coach for Rio is just too smart. Rio should go all the way to a CIF final of LinField and RHP. There will be the toughest game of the year for Rio.
I agree that RHP should be ranked number 6.

they will be caught on there heals and forced to throw.
I saw SM play against SG and I still can't believe Rovia barely got by 14-12.
This will be a great game no doubt,
I'm going with the Rams and who everyone will call an upset victory. Good Luck

Last week was a bye week fluke.... the 'Cats are going to bring it this week.

I still wouldn't doubt a close game between these rivals though.

MOORS!!!

You hit it right on the money.
Cazz couldn't of picked a WORSE night to have his WORSE
game of the year. For what reason?
Who knows but I do know it happens at all levels,
at the ever so important QB position.
That being said, Moors still battle 4qtrs, and go
up 21-14 less than 5 min left in game.
Next two possession's, two COSTLY picks.
Can't afford to have this breakdown EVER again.

Miguel,

Great pick on game of the week. Should be a dandy. Have you noticed that Monrovia hasn't been throwig the ball lately. Is there something wrong with Bueno seems like lately his number hasnt been called. Of course if I had Ramirez in the backfield i would give it to him most of the time as well. How does Smith look to you for TC. Seems like he is coming into his own as a quarterback. Monrovia defense looked they had trouble covering the play-action pass last week vs SM. It's almost a pick your poison with TC. You stop Ruckle and you got Smith and vice versa. Same with Monrovia Bueno or Ramirez. I see another close game for Monrovia and this time they don't escape. In fact they crumble like they have done so many times in the past.

Tech Support -- First of all, I love your screen name. Clever. Second, I'll check with Chris Shockley and make the change if needed.

Eagleball -- The way UCLA was playing, yeah, you're right. On a brighter note, my sister had an awesome time at the game. I wanted to leave with three minutes left in the game and she said "What? You can't leave? What kind of UCLA fan are you? Win, lose or tie, Bruin til I die." I was so proud.

TomS: I missed the RHP-Chadwick game, but my pick would go to the Kares. RHP may move up the rankings soon, but I'm still not sure. They wouldn't beat any of the teams above them, but maybe wins alone warrants a move up.

Miguel,

I think the start time on the Bosco/Verb game has been moved to earlier in the day. Might want to check on that.

Hate to see you go with Maranatha this week but pretty much a no brainer. Kilpatrick is tougher then you think and will pull off a victory against sorry Marshall. What’s your pick on Chadwick vs. RHP. You don’t say. Chadwick looks to be RHP’s toughest game after their game with Brentwood.
Oh, also RHP with there 5 and 0 record so far this year and defending CIF champions should be #6 on your top 10. It’s a sad note for the WSGV when you have to dip down to teams with a 2 and 3 records to be on your top 10

Watching/lets be real:

THE MOORS PLAYED THEIR HEARTS OUT LAST FRI VS. SCHURR. IT WAS AN INTENSE AND EMOTIONAL GAME AS ALWAYS AGAINST THE SPARTANS. HOWEVER, I HAVE TO AGREE WITH ALL THE NEGATIVE COMMENTS OF COACHING(PLAY CALLING). PASS PROTECTION FOR THE MOORS IMPROVED DRASTICALLY SINCE WEEK 1 VS. ROOSEVELT. CAZZ HAD PLENTY OF TIME TO PICK APART SCHURR AND MAKE THE CORRECT THROWS. HOWEVER, HE INSTEAD DECIDED TO RUSH AND THROW INTO BLACK HOLES WHERE #22 WAS THE WHOLE TIME. I BELIEVE I ONLY SAW CAZZ GET RUSHED ONCE MAYBE, MAYBE TWICE. THE REST WAS HIM TRYING TO LEAVE THE POCKET BECAUSE, ''DIV.1 PROSPECT CROCKUM, OR BACCERA WASNT OPEN?!?!?!?!'' COMMON MOORS! THERE IS NO WAY SCHURR SHUT DOWN EVERY CORNER. WE GOT OUT COACHED. BECAUSE THE BOYS DID WHAT THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO DO. (PRIDE DETERMINATION DESIRE! AND THEY SURE PLAYED 4 QTRS!!) NEW WEEK NEW OPPONENT. LETS GET BACK ON TRACK FOR LEAGUE BOYS ITS NOT OVER!!! GO MOORS!!
