Football: Muir speaks out, bring it on Charter Oak!

Charter Oak (9-1) is the defending Southeast Division champion and No. 1 seed, but don’t expect Muir (4-6), which started 0-5 and needed to win its last three game to make the playoffs as the fourth place team from the Pacific League to be intimated when they visit the Chargers in the first round on Friday. Muir has played one of the toughest schedules in the division, losing to Southern Section powers Oaks Christian and Venice. In the Pacific League they lost three games, though just by a combined 11 points, which included a 29-28 loss to fourth-seed Burbank. “It’s another team, they’re not the team of old, that’s a good thing for us,” Muir coach Ken Howard said of Charter Oak. “We don’t mind getting them because now they have all the pressure. They have everything to lose and we have nothing to lose. We have been struggling in the playoffs the last couple years and they won a championship. We’re not going to worry about it, we’re going to show up and give them our best shot.”

    Even if Muir gets by Charter Oaks, their is still South Hills. Tough division for any team trying to reach the finals. But I was thinking, if Monrovia was in the southeast division, how far might they go? really makes you think that the mid-valley can’t be compared with the southeast.

    Here is something else Coach Wooden said: “We don’t prepare for them, they prepare for us.” Believe me, Ken, there is no pressure here! We started with a significantly better Cresenta Valley team last year! Enough Said!!!

    Southeast fan,
    I’m sure Monrovia would do just fine in the Southeast, but would not be the consensus favorite to make it to the finals the way we are in the MidValley.

    The Southeast has become the “Charter Oak Invitational,” which is why they will be in a different division next year. Two sets of Monrovia kids have a good shot at winning CIF this year, those kids at Monrovia as well as those at Charter Oak.

    I like the way OC CIF champions left out the part where Coach Howard says that his team is struggling. I guess that statement had too much class for him. Muir also has a rich football tradition and Howard is not afraid to mention that it’s been a rough year. He knows what his team is capable of and knows that Friday’s game will be tough for both teams.

    For CO CIF Champions to say Coach Howard has no class shows just how little he knows. Howard has more class and character than OC could ever dream of having. What, just because he didn’t say something you wanted to hear? How does that show no class? So because you’re saying Coach Howard has no class and doesn’t respect tradition that must mean you have no class as well. Or do we have a double standard??? You can talk about us and ours but we can’t say anything about you and yours?

    Since you quoted a ledged I hope you take his words to heart and “prepare for us”!!

    Who in the world would be dumb enough to compare the mid-valley to the Southeast division???? Thats just dumb. But I’ll tell you this with the direction Monrovia is going, I wouldnt count out the fact that we could hang with some of those teams!!!

    According to the article Coach Howard simply said his teams have struggled in the playoffs in recent years but that they were going to show up and give it their best. He wants his team to be lose and come out without feeling pressured or worried. Thus he stated that the pressure is all on the number one seed not on Muir who has had a off year with a lot of new young faces. Howard has had tremendous success at Muir year after year and he knows how to get his teams focused. Next season their team will be the team to watch and you simply can’t count them out this year, so if CO thinks they can just show up then they have another thing coming. Stang Nation will rip your heart out of your chest…ask Pasadena.

    I watch muir play in 3 games. They aren’t fast as everyone thinks. They did not have td over yards. The other teams was able to run outside plays. Muirs pass coverage is questionable! And they are weak period . CO wins by 21!
