Star-Jibber: It’s that time again, start thinking All-Area

Above: Rosemead’s Tra Sumler was a unanimous pick for the Star-News Player of the Year.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! With hardly of us working today I thought today would be a good day to throw up this thread and let you have your say about the Star-News’ All-Area football teams while the turkey, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie get set on the table. You can fill in the blanks and make your arguments. The AP is all purpose, which can be used for an extra quarterback, two-way standout or just about anyone that absolutely deserves to be on the team. You might think the hardest decisions are at quarterback, running back, but it’s actually the offensive lineman, the ones that make it all happen.

Player of the year:
Coach of the year:
First Team Offense
QB: (1); RB: (2); AP: (1); WR: (3); OL: (5); PK: (1)
First Team Defense
DL: (3); LB: (4); DB: (3); SS: (1); P: (1)

From the players I’ve covered this year from the PSN coverage area, some players in the discussion…

    QB:
Isaac Valdez (San Gabriel) — Valdez has obviously been impressive all year. I witnessed his game against West Covina. Not sure if he had been getting hit like that all year, but Valdez took a ton of shots in this one. He was still able to show some great athleticism and pocket awareness. Couldn’t help but come away impressed with his play. He made some real good throws on the move, and didn’t necessarily show the running ability he had all year. He had a couple of tough INTs where he was trying to do too much. Overall though, Valdez is a very good HS player and is a tough kid.

    RB:
Max Ruckle (Temple City) — Ruckle was very good. He runs hard and pushes the pile despite his obvious lack of size. Doesn’t have incredible speed, but good speed. His best quality from what I saw is elusiveness as well as some pretty good conditioning. He can carry the load however many times and did a great job this season adjusting to new coach Anthony White’s spread attack. I caught their first game against Arroyo and TC struggled until they went to Ruckle and completely changed the game. TC had given him about 5 or 6 touches in the first half and as soon as they started going to the Ruckle well, everything changed. TC went from being down 21-7 to eventually taking a 24-21 lead late in the fourth. Ruckle was most impressive with 167 yards rushing, 3 receptions for 71 yards and a kickoff return for touchdown. Overall, the kid is one of the grittier players you’ll find and I came away impressed.

    WR:
Chris Rodriguez (Arroyo) — You will be hard-pressed to find a more explosive wide reciever than Rodriguez. In Week 1 vs. Temple City, Rodriguez’s numbers were: 6rec. 210yds 3TD, 1rush 35yds 1TD. The guy fights for balls in the air for his quarterback. He is explosive as soon as he gets the ball in his hands. And he just might be the most underrated player in the SGV. Rodriguez’s season totals come out to: 44rec. 741yards 8 TDs, 12car. 153yards 2TDs… With a recieving long of 91yards and an 80-yard touchdown run. Rodriguez also has three interceptions on defense.

Mark Covarrubius (San Gabriel) — Covarrubius is just a junior, but watching him play against West Covina he was very solid. Ran precise routes and has great hands. He might not be the top guy right now, but by next year he will be making some noise assuming San Gabriel can recover from losing Isaac Valdez. In any case, he finished the season with 57rec. for 815 yards and six touchdowns. He also added 124 tackles and three INTs on the other side of the ball.

Going to be catching the Marantha-Ontario Christian game this Friday night, so I will get the chance to see QB Cody Keith…

Arroyo is probably considered part of the ESGV… Thus, Steven Rivera isn’t up there.. If they are, Rivera is quite possibly the most impressive QB in the entire Valley, East or West..

  • Matt

I will operate on the assumption that Player of the Year is Bueno and that he is not included in the first team. That being said, my QB is Rocky Moore from LC. 2143 yards in 10 games with 21 TDs and only 5 picks. There were times he carried his team. The best WR in the area is Josh Hanson of LC who caught 31 passes for 800 yards and 7 TDs. Josh missed one full game and played only one quarter against Blair. He is also a great DB. All purpose is Yortsis from San Marino. He just does everything and always seems to show up when he is needed most. Ruckle from TC , although playing hurt, is still the best back I saw this year. The back from Arroyo was good and Rameriz from Monrovia was hurt early against LC so I can not say much about him.

The best LB was Converse from San Marino. Lowden from Monrovia is the real deal. David Miller from LC should be included in this group. Monrovia had two good corners.

    Bueno, Riley, Ruckle also

WR or AP – Mike Alexander – LSHS (played QB,WR, Safety, and returned kicks/punts – at least those who kicked in his direction)

Punter – Mark Danhuassen – LSHS

good luck picking a QB between

    Justin Posthuma and Nick Bueno
I would go Posthuma due to seniority and also strength of schedule

I catch a different game every week from the eastern valley to the west. Sometimes you run across something special. Saw quite a few but I will limit mine to three. These boys just stand out as something above and beyond special this season. They made their respective games exciting to watch.

    First Team (offense and defense):
AP-Nick Bueno-Monrovia(Leads his team everyweek like non other—he is a fearless QB)
AP-Cody Cowell-RIO (Incredible to watch both on offense and defense, great football instincts, he hits hard, I even see a field goal to his credit, sorry I missed that. I give him the edge on Player of the Year.)
AP-Dietrich Riley-St Francis-(wow, what instinct, speed speed speed!)

  • Knight03

I really hope this years area team is not a pity party (sg qb or anyone else on that weak squad). No team who comes in second or third and gets trounced in the first round deserves to have a player make first team. However, it is pretty obvious that mm has some kind of ties and favoritism towards almont league teams. MM grow a pair and make the right decisions. Stop cheating players that actually deserve the recognition.

  • Apache Joe

Lagace has to be on this list from Arcadia. He is one of the top players in the valley already as a sophomore. He should be either at safety or receiver, IMO at receiver.

He is a stud. Plain and simple, and the deserving all-area player from Arcadia this year.

  • Titan Sports Fan

agree with yortsos for all purpose but if not that WR or Safety. Hanson sorry to say it doesnt have anything on yortsos as a WR hanson in a more pass friendly offense so he may have better stats but i dont believe teams game plan to stop him like they do yortsos. Converse at MLB has anchored a very formidable linebacking corp at SM as the only starting senior of the bunch and deserves strong consideration

  • the truth

a good amount of the SF line should get credit. they gave justin posthuma, dietrich riley, and travis talianko the time and holes to spread the ball around. cameron st. george anchors the offensive line as a senior, not getting much recognition because of his lack of size, but holds his ground as well as anyone else. patrick carroll at the left tackle letting up few to no sacks. and of course david chirikian, a two way standout, 2nd year starter.

I’m not sure what to do with this section of the blog.

    a) Is this the best players at their position?
    b) Is this the best players at their position on the best teams?
    c) Is this the guys with the best statistics?
    d) Is this guys who are the toughest to stop?

What should be my criteria for this? I have a lot of thoughts but I’d probably just pick the best players that I’ve seen this year. That would not include anyone from Rio Hondo Prep since none of their players could touch the field in the Pacific League. It would also force me to pick Dietrich Riley for Player of the Year. He’s by far the best athlete/player in the valley and college coaches agree. I’d love to pick a full team so I’ll give it a shot:

POY: Riley (SF) – Not anyone near his abilities.
COY: Ryan Maddox (Monrovia) – A perfect regular season and another RHL title. They have some young skill guys and he’s been able to get them to work together.

Side Note: Hector Valencia (Burbank) – Done a ton. When was the last time you saw a Burbank team that was relevant?

    First Team Offense:
QB: Justin Posthuma (SF) – Best pure QB in the area.
AP: Nick Bueno (Monrovia) – Best all-around ATH not Riley.
RB: Max Ruckle (TC) – Best back in the RHL. Barring injuries he’s clearly, and I mean clearly, the best.
RB: Dalton Williams (Burroughs) – Dominant athlete. Toughest in the Pacific to stop.
WR: Taylor Lagace (Arcadia) – Clearly the Best WR in the Pacific.
WR: Stephen Yortsos (SM) – Clearly the Best WR in the RHL.
WR: Travis Talianko (SF) – Best WR at St. Francis not named Riley.
OL: Matt O’Malley (TC) – Best OL in the RHL (the last of a dying breed at TC).
OL: Patrick Carroll (SF) – Strong/Tough LT for the Knights.
OL: Cameron St. George (SF) – Brains of the operation on the best area OL.
OL: Alan Felix (SM) – Biggest and Best OL at SM. Downblocks and double teams are strong.
PK: Ian Sternau (SF) – Best Leg in the Area.

DL: David Chirikian (SF): Two way guy that is tough to block alone.
DL: Luis Diaz (Rosemead): Tough and quick off the ball. A Sack Machine.
DL: Justin Sutton (TC): Dominant run stopper with a high motor.
LB: Josh Lowden (Monrovia): Best athlete at LB in the area. Great kid too.
LB: Chris Cabrera (SF): He’s everywhere for the Knights.
LB: Mark Covarrubius (SG): Best tackler in that league by far. Anchors their defense.
LB: Trent Converse (SM): Great instincts, high motor, great tackler, makes plays.
DB: Jarron Williams (Muir) – Skills and toughness to be a great one at the next level.
DB: Stevie Yortsos (SM) – Again leads the area in INT’s. Makes big plays too.
DB: Mitchell Crockam (Alhambra) – Great size and cover skills. Rarely gets chances to make plays.
SS: Josh Hanson (LC) – Best and only defensive playmaker at LC.
P: Mark Danhuassen (LS) – Great kid; great story in the paper too. Decent leg in a down year for punters.

Give me the feedback. What’s wrong with this list??

If Miguel doesnt go off your picks for All Area, then theres something wrong. I thought it was for the most part un-biased. And pretty much right on, I dont see anything wrong with your picks

  • small school fan

    To Stadium Faculty Crew:

I respect your picks, not bad, but I take it you have something against Rio Hondo Prep. They may be part of the small school segment, but judgeing by your ignorant comment you have never seen them play. Yes, some might not ever touch a field in Pacific League, but a few WOULD HAVE taken key starting positions away from some in the Pacific League. A great athlete is a great athlete and shines wherever he/she goes.
Good luck to EVERY STAR NEWS AREA team still in playoffs. An area where every team had at least a standout out or two this season.

  • goteamgo

SFC has good, logical, well thought out picks. If I argued with him, we would still both be right, and neither of us would be wrong.

I still would make a case for Mike Alexander of La Salle for AP or WR, probably one of the best players the Star News has not seen this year. Did not get on the radar for his senior year as most of his junior year was missed due to injury. Without him, La Salle would not have made the playoffs.

  • Goldenarm

Matt O’malley – great description as “a dying breed”. It may actually be a dying lineman factory. Matt has been a joy to watch and talk with over the 4 years…the mold may be broken forever with him.

His fake punt run against M-town JV, where he dragged two guys 6 yards to get the 1st down. His psycho kickoff onsides recovery well downfield against LC, his brick wall pancake on Paraclete’s Buteyn last year, punt blocks, strips, flattened DE’s, fumble recoveries…crap I will even miss his endless leg cramps on the field – and cooking him 3 extra burgers at BBQ time.
Once again this year – he owned the TC weight room as well – there were bigger lineman, none stronger though.

    Good luck Matt.

  • LSHS

I completely agree with goteamgo. Mike Alexander has to be on the first team for AP, WR, or DB…The kids numbers are better than most in the area and he didnt really play one specific position. In my opinion he saved Coach Peterson’s job. La Salle looked down and out going into there final two regular season games. Mike Alexander really put his team on his shoulders to beat Cantwell. He had TD runs of 65, 67, and 57 out of the wildcat formation. He also had a 96 yard kickoff return to the house. Defensively for that game he had 10 tackles, 4 of which were touchdown saving tackles. Possibly the best game played by anyone in the area.

The kid played his tail off all season, even in the playoffs where La Salle got beat easily. I think that all the Rio Hondo league teams would agree that this kid is one of the best in the area.
I really hope Mike Alexander makes the first team all area, he truly deserves it.

monrovias and temple citys dline i would say has been the best ive seen and ive been to many games.
temple citys line is fast but strong in the middle with Matt omalley and Justin Sutton and very strong put fast ends in Steven fei and Victor dominguez also carlos mota.monrovias line is big and fast and dominates most olines they faced. basciaally these guys should be either first or second team.

    Ellis Mcarthy
    Grant Haggard
    justin sutton
    matt omalley
    victor dominguez
    steven fei..all these guys dominate!

  • LSHS

    SFC,

Well I am obviously bias, but Mike Alexander has better numbers than all the receivers you chose. I think Alexander should be the AP player, his numbers are close to Buenos in yards. Nick having 854 yards passing and 1191 yards rushing in 11 games. Mike having 212 yards passing, 589 yards rushing, and 622 yards receiving in 10 games. I think what separates Mike from Nick is Mike also had 113 yards in punt returns and 207 yards in kickoff returns, his long being 96 yards. Defensively he had 33 tackles and 3 interceptions. Lastly Mike had 15 touchdowns in comparison to Nick’s 14 touchdowns. All of these stats are Mike having played 10 games to Nick’s 11 games.

Now the only thing is are we basing these players off of stats, how good the team does, etc. I just wanted to show that a case can and should be made for Mike Alexander to be on the first team all area at AP, W.R., or even D.B. Mike literally carried the team on his shoulders. Mike is an amazing athlete and I can not wait to see where he ends up.

LSHS, if you’re going to count all of Alexander’s all purpose td’s then you should also include Bueno’s passing td’s as well. Which would bring his total to 24 td’s. And keep this in mind, in 8 of 12 games Bueno was pulled either at half time or midway thru the 3rd quarter. Both are very talented in their own way.

I clearly dont understand why everyone is saying that Max Ruckle should be the all area running back when Dalton Williams of John Burroughs HS is deserving of all area RB if you dont believe me then look up his stats on maxpreps and take note that he plays both ways also starts at linebacker and has only played in the first half of 4 games. you can google him and you will also find out that films 21 named him the offensive player of the year. after you do your homework you will realize that Dalton Williams is your pick for all area running back.

Justin Posthuma is a tough kid who proved his worth time and time again. His statistics speak for themselves, and quite frankly, there is not a better arm in the SGV. Regarding his toughness, How many kids will get back on the field to lead their team with a broken hand? He deserves the QB spot.

That said, I do not think anybody will argue that Nick Bueno’s leadership and toughness will lead Monrovia to the CIF title….He clearly deserves to be Player of the Year.

  • Miguel Melendez

For the record: Burroughs, Crescenta Valley, Burbank or any of the other school after the Foothill exit off the 210 freeway is out of our coverage area.

  • goteamgo

Here is a “controversial” opinion that may keep a few bloggers happy (and disappoint a few):

    POY – Nick Bueno
    QB – Justin Posthuma
AP – Mike Alexander (this kid was the classic definition of “all purpose” – WR, QB, RB, KR, DB – too bad MM did not see him play)
    DB – Dietrich Riley

The controversy may come because Riley is no doubt the top player in the SGV, and that warrants POY consideration; however, he missed a game or two due to injury – obviously not his fault, but POY is consistency over the entire 10 game season -

I obviously have my biases, but food for discussion.

  • BigFatFan

i just dont see Riley as POY. yeah, he’s being recruited big time, but that does not mean he had the statically best season of all the boys in the SGV. Bueno gets my vote.

  • Witness

Riley is easily the top player in the SGV. Unfortunately his hamsring injury and missing a few games will cost him the player of the year honor. We have all seen what Riley can do on the field and we look forward to watching him play on Saturday afternoons next season.

  • Anonymous

Max Ruckle has as good as talent as any back in the SGV. However out of that offense he was limited and with his injury towards the end of the season, he’s a great running back but this isn’t based on talent this should be based on performance and he because he was limited he should not be first team. Even looking at stats, Hung has more yards than him and Ruckle is clearly a better RB than Hung and its a shame he was stuck in a spread O

  • H2O

you guys r retards. ISAAC VALDEZ!! is once again the premiere QB in the entire west san gabriel valley! anyone who does not see this has yet to watch a SGHS football game. he can throw, extends plays with his feet, has great pocket presence, field vision, is an outstanding leader, extreme competitor, and is SUPER ATHLETIC! bueno gr8 all purpose guy. SF is gonna get extra hype bcuz they are SF but common ISAAC VALDEZ has been doing this for 3 years! he has continued his dominance in the SAN GABRIEL VALLEY @ his position. Do NOT commit the crime of the century and belittle his accomplishments because he is the best QB in the valley HANDS DOWN!

  • Elephant

    Just my opinion

POY- Nick Bueno, Monrovia. Bueno has been a treat to watch. There’s always a potential of him making an incredible play every time he had the ball. A lot have criticized Bueno for not throwing the ball enough, but you can’t deny that he can throw the ball when he needs to. On the run, Bueno has accumulated well over 1200 yards at an astounding 12 yards per carry. And as mentioned earlier, in 8 games he was pulled early in the 3rd quarter. Can you imagine his stats if he would have played 12 complete games? Leads by example. Tough as nails, I heard his coaches were pleading with him to run out of bounds more often. Impact player.

QB- Justin Posthuma, SF. No doubt the best pure qb in the area. 17 tds – 5 ints.

AP- toss up Mike Alexander, La Salle. Led his team in almost every category that involved moving the ball. Or Steve Yortsos, SM. Got it done on both sides of the ball. 8 ints.

DB- Dietrich Riley, SF. Pure natural athlete and deserving of all the college attention. Injury hurt his chance for POY, as well as sharing the spotlight with Posthuma and Talianko.

LB- Josh Lowden, Monrovia. Simply a beast. Quick to the ball and reads the guards well. Not too many rbs or receivers are going to outrun this guy.

I don’t know enough about the other positions so I won’t comment on them.

H2O, I think you did more damage representing Valdez by starting your comment with “you guys r retards”.

  • LSHS

Mike Alexander did everything, just looked up his stats:
He passed for 212 yards and a touchdown.
He rushed for 589 yards on 56 carries for 10.52 yards per carry.
He had 622 yards receiving on 31 catches for a huge average of 20.07 yards per reception.
He returned 12 punts for 113 yards averaging 9.42 yards a return.
He also returned 6 kickoffs for 207 yards, which averages out to 34.5 yards a return.
He only really played defense for a total of 6 games and had 33 tackles and 3 interceptions. If we count the playoffs he had an extra interception (against one of the top rated teams in the state).
-All these statistics are over the regular season, playoffs not counted, except the interception.

I know I am obviouly bias, but when I looked up the other players numbers (over the regular season only)no one else came close to what he did on offense for his team. If you include defense the numbers are just mind boggling. I really hope Miguel looks into this, because it would be a total bummer if Alexander got overlooked. Trust me the number’s dont lie. Look at the number of receptions, carries, returns, etc. Most of the other players touched the ball more, but Mike’s numbers are better. I mean his averages(yards per catch, run, returns) are remarkable!!!

  • King

    LSHS-

By looking at those numbers I would have to agree that Mike Alexander deserves a spot of the First Team All Area. If he doesn’t then this whole process is blah. Those are some pretty solid numbers for a kid that seems to be just about every where on the field. Without Mike in the game or on that La Salle team who knows how many games they don’t win. I recall he basically beat Cantwell with his legs, and had a huge touchdown against Natha (maybe 2?). Mike for FIRST TEAM!

what about ormoni duncanWRjohnmuir SR he is a very graet player he should be 1 WR HE SCORD EVERY GAME AVG 100 REC YARDS A GAME HE DESSERTS IT

  • goteamgo

    LSHS/King -

If that is not the definition of “All Purpose” then I do not know what is. Too bad MM did not see him in person this year.

  • BigFatFan

Coach of the Year: Mike McFarland at Pasadena, for turning that program around. sure you could vote for Maddox, but with all the horses in the Monrovia stable, it would be hard to miss with any coach

  • linemen

starting off with defensive linemen first

DL- Sutton (TC) – beast run stopper with huge body and a great motor

DL- Haggard (Mtown) – great pass rusher… a nightmare for OT’s

DL- Luis Diaz (rosemead) – solid motor, gets a lot of sacks

    O-line:

OL- Carrol (SF) – LT for arguably the areas best team

OL- Matt O’malley (TC) – another beast from TC, hard to disagree when you see his beard

OL- Alan Felix (SM) – great surge off the ball, large yet agile and athletic

OL- Cameron St. George (SF) – leader of the best OL in the area

    just my opinion…

  • Quimmer

I was at the Cantwell/La Salle game, and the performance Mike Alexander put on was UNREAL! He is incredible to watch Miguel. He plays with heart and determination on every play – both offensively and defensively. Last year La Salle went 1-9 with their “highly touted” QB, but Mike was injured almost all season. I can’t imagine how much better they would have done with Mike on the field. Mike stepped up this season and took that team on his back. I’m on the Mike bandwagon, and agree he deserves 1st team!!! The other teams stopped kicking the ball to Mike on all kick-offs, and that really says something! Good luck to Mike in college, he is something special.

  • 12345

Bueno needs to get AP no doubt. He is the fastest kid in the area and needs to prove it by going to a combine or something soon. Rocky Moore from LCHS QB led the Rio Hondo league in passing and broke all but 2 school records. Anyone who played LC knows Josh Hanson is extremely dangerous and plays the wideout position better than anyone in Rio Hondo. Lowden from Monrovia can rival Bueno for AP but a simple spot at LB would do more than fine. Travis Talianko is the best tight end in the area without a doubt. There needs to be a TE slot, not just WR spots.

  • LSHS

    12345,

Could you please elaborate why Bueno should receive the AP (all-purpose) spot, considering he only played one position all season. Also why should Lowden be considered for the AP spot. Please state your case, in my opinion neither should be even nominated for the All-Purpose spot. Lowden played defense, very well but should only be considered as a LB. Bueno only played quarterback, where he threw and ran the ball very well, but as expected considering the offense is tailored to him. Not to knock either, but I think your definition of All-Purpose is off, or maybe its just me.

  • Anonymous

Yeah 12345 that doesn’t make any sense, can you also explain how Josh Hanson is a better reciever than Stevie Yortsos?

  • Anonymous

i would personally love to see the stats of Saint Francis players if they played teams such as mary star of the sea, la sallee, and la canada as opposed to teams such as Bishop Alemany, Chaminade, Notre Dame, and Loyola, who were all excellent teams this year.

  • LSHS

I would also like it if I could see how good La Salle could be if they had 1,374 male/students to pick from, as opposed to the 390 male/students they pick from now. Man I hope St. Francis is playing better competition with 1,000 more players to pick from. Don’t knock the smaller schools for being small. The leagues are aligned like they are for a reason.

  • anonymous

excuse me St francis only has 400 guys

  • LSHS

They definitely have more than 400, you’re right I went off calpreps numbers, they doubled it. The real number is around 680-710. Which is still double that of La Salle.

  • goteamgo

Calpreps doubles enrollment for all-boys schools, to provide a comparison to co-ed schools.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
