GHoops Preview: Muir reloads, aims for league title

Winning streaks, league title streaks and braggin' rights are all at stake.
Welcome to a 2009-10 girls basketball season where young players will be trying to find their footing replacing graduated players, some of whom have gone on to NCAA Division I programs.
New coaches will try to keep programs at the successful level of previous seasons, and a change in playoff alignments by the CIF-Southern Section could potentially have more area teams advancing further into postseason play.
The preseason area top 10, with 2008-09 records in parenthesis:
No. 1 Muir
The Mustangs do not rebuild. They just reload.
It's tough to replace two players who went to Division I schools - Cal's Eliza Pierre and Kentucky's Brittany Henderson - but coach Gary Johnson is trying.
Three-point shooter Taylor Gomez and post player Daysha Thomas are back, and two players landed on Johnson's court from the East: Junior Ashia Owens and sophomore point guard Tahniya Swett, from Texas and Atlanta, respectively, who attended elementary schools in Pasadena before moving to other states.
"You can't replace those two," Johnson said of his graduated Division I players.
The Mustangs have won 48 consecutive Pacific League games. All they seem to be missing of late is that big brass ring: a CIF-SS title. The Mustangs last won a title in 1997.
The Mustangs also have senior power forward Jermani Daniels, who had to sit out last season after transferring from Blair, and Taylor Polk and Jerrica Daniels, both up from the junior varsity.

No. 2 La Canada
On the first day teams could play games, the Spartans finally were able to field two full teams against each other in practice.
That's because the volleyball season is over and Courtney McCutchan and Grace O'Hara were available to join the team.
"We're going to have to practice while we play (games)," Spartans coach Tamar Hill said. "The girls are going to have to work on getting air. They don't run as much in volleyball."
But the adjustments should come quickly for the two returning starters.
"We're doing a drill and they were like, `I remember what we're supposed to do,' " Hill said.
Tia Chen and Shannon Denney, both of whom saw a lot of playing time last season, are back. Kristene Hossepian, who saw little playing time, steps into a starting role.
McCutchan offers the Spartans height down low, but Hill said she will miss Lora Benedetti, who graduated.
"Shannon has worked really hard this summer and fall, and we think she'll do a really good job," Hill said.
No. 3 La Salle
It's in the hands of three freshmen.
Billie Ruby, Denise Peterson and Sarah Kopcha made their high school debuts against La Mirada in the Wilson Tournament on Tuesday. Peterson, a point guard, is the daughter of Lancers football coach Antoine Peterson.
"You never quite know what to expect from freshmen," La Salle coach Kevin Cormier said. "But they've played well and I'm really happy for them."
La Salle lost Katie Tripoli and point guard Jasmine Jenkins from a team that reached the CIF-SS quarterfinals last season.
"They provided that senior leadership and we're going to miss them a lot," Cormier said.
Itos Mena-Aikhionbare and Kimi Takaoka return after making the All-Camino Real League teams last season. Takaoka is fresh off playing in the CIF/SCWGA Southern California finals, and Cormier said her shot is not there yet. She averaged double figures in scoring last season.
The Lancers are waiting on injured guard Jackie Pacheco to return. Amalea Sideropoulos also is back.
No. 4 Pasadena Poly
The ball will be going to sophomore Michelle Miller. The only question is, how can opponents stop her?
"She's gotten bigger, stronger and faster," Panthers coach Kim Weber Hall said. "Too bad she can't pass the ball to herself. She's definitely better."
Miller helped the Panthers end Flintridge Prep's Prep League dominance last season, averaging 25.2 points. This season, she'll need help from Jade Richard-Craven and senior Julia Brown. Freshman Courtney Foster is expected to start at point guard.
The Panthers lost inside muscle in Kelly Pray, but Richard-Craven played on the JV football team this fall and lifted weights daily with her teammates.
No. 5 Flintridge Prep
Todd Frost has been the Rebels coach for a little more than six weeks, replacing Kenny Fisher, the longtime and successful coach who's now an assistant at San Marino.
It's a good thing that Frost knows the program. He's a teacher on campus and was an assistant to Fisher for 10 seasons.
"I'm familiar with them and they're familiar with me," he said.
The Rebels, who had their 44-game Prep League winning streak end last season, have eight seniors.
"We're staying with the same stuff, and later on I'll probably throw in some things I want to do," Frost said. "Our goals remain the same: Win the Prep League and get to the playoffs."
Megan Musashi will lead the senior charge. She was last season's leading scorer and can play inside and out. Courtney Takada and junior Kristin Shum also will be key players.
No. 6 Keppel
The streak will have to live on with a handful of new players.
The Aztecs have not lost an Almont League game in more than eight years, with the streak at 81, and they've also won 14 consecutive league titles.
But this Aztecs team lost eight seniors, including top players Janise Ho and Tiffany Rubin. Also gone is Michelle Lo, who transferred.
"The girls want to hopefully keep that streak going," Keppel coach Ib Belou said. "It is still one of their goals."
It will be harder without Lo, who could post up and play the point. Belou said he didn't know where she transferred.
The Aztecs have three seniors, but it's the underclassmen Belou is counting on, including sophomore Sandra Gao and freshmen guards Alyson Lock, Lesley Tan and Emily Thach.
No. 7 Maranatha
The Minutemen are going up-tempo.
That's what new coach George Wrighster has installed.
"It's just a different philosophy," said Wrighster, who's made a slight move north, going from Blair to Maranatha. "It's a different style of play."
Gone is the zone defense. Also gone is any thought of a slow, methodical game.
"We have a lot of young girls," he said. "It was difficult at first, but they're beginning to love it."
The Minutemen reached the second round of the CIF-SS playoffs last season after going to the championship game the previous season.
Junior guard Mian Dinggle and athletic Taylor MacLeod, who helped the Minutemen to the volleyball quarterfinals, return. Senior guard Angeline Jefferson is expected to make a big impact. Junior Kaila Turner is also expected to contribute.
No. 8 South Pasadena
The post-Nicol Biesek era begins.
"We do not have one girl to go to; we hope to have three or four," Tigers coach Ralph Punaro said. "It's tough to replace a league MVP like Nicol, but I think we can make it up with our other players."
That includes junior guard Kelsey Lee and Kelsey Nakamura, who saw significant playing time as a freshman last season. Junior Emma Mitchell will play the post.
"We're short and scrappy," Punaro said.
No. 9 Pasadena
The Bulldogs lost key players in Phillisha McFadden and Chloris Turner, but they return guard Tyler Crockom and some inside players.
No. 10 San Marino
The Titans lost five seniors, but it didn't show in their season opener, a 59-24 victory over San Gabriel on Monday.
"We're rebuilding, but we're talented," coach David Jensen said. "We have some freshmen with talent."
That includes point guard Leigh Kunitake, who will be passing the ball to leading scorer Remi Kohno, a junior guard, and senior Andrea Chiu, who will play forward. Freshman Emma Wong is the backup point guard.
