Welcome to 2010 …. Tournaments over, what’s next?

It’s the first official school week of 2010, so I ask coaches, parents and boosters to give me a hand and tell me which big nonleague games should be covered this week. Most leagues will dive into action next week. Any suggestions? Boys and girls soccer coaches, now’s a good time to hound me to cover your games since it was all basketball last week, though I won’t necessarily shy away from a good hoops game.

Temple city vs Montebello Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary baseball saturday at 10am @ Temple City HS

    Happy New Year Miguel!
8 out of 10 of the Area’s top teams are into league play this week, with the other two, La Salle and Maranatha playing each other.
    Games of the week:
    Non League:
    La Salle vs. Maranantha
    FSHA vs. HW
    Mayfield vs. Westridge

Here are the updated records (please post corrections and more info) and next games to be played.
I have sorted the top ten into my choices which are clearly biasedso weigh in with how you think that the teams should be ranked

    2. Flintridge Sacred Heart (8-1-0) Los Tacos tourney Champs! The defending Mission League Champs next game is Wed. 5:00PM @ League Rival Harvard-Westlake. Last year the Tologs split their season series with the Wolverines.

    1. La Salle (9-2-3) — Los Tacos tourney 3rd place! Next game Tuesday 4:30 PM @ Maranatha.

    5. Maranatha (4-3-1) 2-3 on Max Preps! Post those results. Next game Tuesday 4:30PM vs. La Salle. Then league play vs. Valley Christian next week.

    7. Ramona Convent (6-3-2) Next game Tuesday 3:00 PM @ Sunshine League rival and Defending champs Notre Dame Academy. Can Ramona improve on last year? Last year they were blanked in their two games vs. the Regals by an aggregate of 7-0!

    9. Alverno (6-3-0) Takes 2nd place in Ontario Christian Tourney. The Jaguars’ preseason highlight is the 3-1 Semi Finals win vs. Valley Christian (defending tourney champ, CIF D5 #2 ranked, 2009 CIF Regional Small School semi finalist). The Jaguars now strive to win their 10th Consecutive Horizon League Championship and repeat their CIF Championship. Next “home” game Wed. 3:30PM vs. league rival Bishop @ Rio de Los Angeles State Park (Neither Alverno nor the City of Sierra Madre has a soccer field!)

    10. Westridge (3-1-2) next game Tuesday 3:15 PM @ League rival Mayfield. Last year the Tigers won both games vs. the Cubs by one goal margins on their way to a 2nd place Prep League finish.

    4. Flintridge Prep (4-1-0) . Next game Wed. 3:30 @ league rival Poly. Last year the Rebels had 1-0 and 0-0 games vs. the Panthers.

    6. Mayfield (5-2-0) — Next game Tuesday 3:15 PM vs. Westridge this will be a good gauge of how the new coach has the Cubs playing.

    8. Pasadena Poly (4-3-2) 1-0-2 On MaXPreps. Next game Wed. 3:30 vs. Prep League rival Flintridge Prep

    3. Arcadia (1-2-2) –Results??? No up-to-date info on Maxpreps or High School sports and the Arcadia Soccer Team pages were last updated years ago! Next game vs. Monrovia then vs. league rival Burbank on Friday

South Pasadena (3-5-1) seems like this should be a top 10 team by season’s end

La Canada (1-2-1) Got to believe that the Star News Girls soccer Coach of the year will get this team back up into the top 10

Monrovia (1-10-0) This has to be a better team than this, stop playing the offside trap for all 80 minutes of every game! Also really hard preseason and no home games..

South Pasadena is actually 5-6-1, having lost its last 3 games in the NOCC Tournament to higher division and some ranked teams. Saw only one game, where they led preseason Div 4 #1 ranked Sultana 1-0 with 15 minutes to play and then collapsed losing 3-1. Interesting team, as it has played the entire season so far without one of their best returning players who was All-League last year, is being given some recruiting looks and is being saved for League play, and their returning Keeper, who I heard may or may not play at all this year. With returning offensive star Tara Aalem, MF Erica Quinonez and Defenders Slocum and Colliau they look good on paper to do well in League. Their weakness based on the few games I have seen and heard about is their current replacement goalie who has apparently been beaten pretty easily. One last thing, I noticed Poly was not in today’s top 10 rankings. I think that is a mistake, as they sure have looked good in the few games I have seen. They may well be right up there by season end.
