LA SALLE AT MARANATHA: Matt Nolan, Josh Anderson and Michael Edwards were virtually unstoppable in leading the Lancers (19-8) to a convincing 75-53 win over Blair in the first-round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 4A playoffs. Anderson scored with such ease, slashing past defenders and going to the rim with authority. He scored 17 points and Anderson also added 17 on 6-of-9 shooting. If La Salle’s front court plays as efficient as it did against Blair, then you can bet Maranatha (18-10) will have a hard time stopping them, too. The Minutemen recorded an easy 59-38 win over Kern Valley. Both teams met early in summer league, but of course, it’s not summer league anymore. It’s win or go home.

PASADENA AT AYALA: It’s around this time in the CIF-Southern Section boys basketball playoffs when Pasadena High School infamously is known for making an early exit. Sure, it’s only been in the last two years when the Bulldogs have fallen in the second round, but it’s something that will definitely be on their minds when Pasadena (21-6) visits Ayala (17-11) at 7 tonight in Division 2A action. “The second round the last couple of years have been a demon,” Bulldogs coach Tim Tucker said. “Of course you can’t not think about that when you head into this second-round game.” Pasadena is the No. 2 seed and favored to make a finals run. Tucker said anytime a team is one of the top two seeded teams they’re expected to make a deep run. “That’s part of being the No. 1 or No. 2 seed, you’re supposed to make it there (the finals),” Tucker said. “There’s no ifs, ands or buts about it. There’s a target on our backs, there’s pressure, but this is why you play the tough schedule that you play early in the season.”
Still fresh in the Bulldogs’ minds, however, are early exits at the hands of Arroyo Valley and Long Beach Poly. But don’t be quick to call it nerves. “Not nerves,” Tucker said. “I would say it’s more like in the back of our mind that’s in our past. I respect Ayala, but we’re no longer talking about Long Beach Poly and Arroyo Valley.”

LA CANADA AT CAMPBELL HALL: When La Caada (22-5) visits Campbell Hall (20-7) in Division 3A, the Spartans will play in front of the smallest crowd for a playoff game.
Campbell Hall’s gym accommodates only 200 fans, which means 100 seats are for La Caada. Those include 40 for parents and family. Fans wishing to attend the game still can do so but will have to watch from a live feed sent to a TV at another building in the school. “I guess fans who don’t want to do that can read the story in the paper,” La Caada coach Tom Hofman said. “It’s going to be a very ridiculous situation.” Nevertheless, the Spartans are still alive thanks to Omar Rady’s heads up play, when with less than 20 seconds stole the ball and converted a layup to give La Caada a 53-52 win over Brea Olinda. Trailing on Rady’s winning play was Kyle Caudill, a 7-foot, 265 pound junior forward who came close to blocking Rady’s winning shot. La Caada was up by four at halftime and had a 9-point lead in the fourth quarter that dissipated after the Spartans went scoreless for six minutes. Brea Olinda had three shot attempts in the final 20 seconds but couldn’t convert.

KEPPEL AT NORWALK: Fourth-seeded Keppel (22-5) visits Norwalk (16-12) in Division 2A, and the host Lancers have a formidable weapon in guard Anthony Holliday, who averages 18 points per game. But the Aztecs quickly are building a reputation of slowing down the big man on the opposite team. In its 58-50 first-round win over West Valley, Keppel held guard Lekeith Kimbrough to only 12 points. He entered the game averaging 30.6 points. “This kid was legit,” Keppel coach Hung Duong said. “We face-guarded him and were able to have other kids help out and we focused on limiting his drive to the basket.” The fourth-seeded Aztecs have another plan for stopping Holiday. “We were fortunate to have film on Norwalk,” Duong said. “We definitely need to stop (Holliday). He’ll be a handful, but we’ll have to make him earn and work for his shots. We can’t make it easy for him.” Keppel has improved drastically since last year’s first-round exit to Summit. It loaded its schedule with the likes of La Caada and Renaissance Academy, a team the Aztecs beat twice this season. Renaissance Academy is the top seed and favored to win the Division 5A crown.

This is probabaly Godley biggest game as a coach at Maranatha, beating LaSalle in the playoffs and possible having a chance at getting the chance to play Crespi in the Quarters. This will be a close game for sure.

Tucker is right when he says 1 and 2 seeds should go far in the playoffs, that being said his team should have no problem advancing, he is correct pasadena did play a tough schedule and have beaten some good teams. He as the coach needs to stop talking about nerves and what is in the back of there minds and get his boys to play some soild defense and not have mental lapses like I have seen this year.Missed lay -ups and timely turnovers have hurt the Bulldogs this year, keep it in toyama hands and you should advance to Semi – Finals.

LaCanada vs Campbell Hall, Public vs Private, That’s all I need to say, Good Luck Hoffman you do it the right way and by developing your own kids and not getting transfers every year.

Maranatha has never been much of or really considered a rival for La Salle.

  • Just Me

    81,

That may have been true in the past but if you have been to a game, any sport, in the last couple of years they are definitely rivals now. Come to the game tonight and check out the atmosphere, it will be different than any 2nd round game.

  • Anonymous

I think Maranatha considers La Salle a rival, but La Salle does not really consider Maranatha a rival.

  • MHS Fan

My three kids say that La Salle rivalry is more hype than it really is.

Why even push a rivalry, why not just have good competition?

    Good luck to both teams.

  • 81

Maranatha has fantasies of being like LS. It’s probably why they tried to mirror LS down to the school colors and wanting to stay in the Sierra Madre area when even the City did not want them. (Which IMO was a loss for Sierra Madre.)

  • MHS Fan

Well, maybe they DID have fantasies but that is not the case anymore. They are a good school, several teams send kids to D-1 schools every year and plenty are doing the IVY thing. They had a gal score perfect SAT’s as well, so IF they did, I’m glad they did not.

As for Sierra Madre, they missed out on a lot of business. The Ralphs my MHS loves them!

I like and respect LS but its good to change it up here and there. I hope for a good game.

My kid swims, apparently the swim teams are racing as well. I’ll be there for that.

After fighting cancer for years, former AHS football coach, Jim Ellsworth passed away on Thursday the 18th of Feburary, 2010. Famous for creating the phrase “How ‘Bout Them Apaches?” he was a coach for over 20 years. He will always be remembered.

    what LS – Maranatha rivalry?

  • MHS Fan

Not much rivalry and a clear and easy win for LS. Nice job!

  • No Rivalry???

    81 -

No Rivalry?? What are you smokin 81????

First of all. In football, Maranatha won last year and this year, La Salle only won because they had Zebras on their side.

A couple of years ago in Basketball when MHS was probably the better team, La Salle would not schedule them. Nobody really expected Maranatha to win this game and even though the deck was stacked against Maranatha, there clearly was a rivalry on display last night. Is it just me or should super freshman Jeremy Major have started that game and never come out???
It might be time for another new coach at MHS.

Finally, let’s see if you dare to show up for the MHS vs. La Salle Baseball double header this year on your field.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what La Salle has to offer the rivalry then!! Oh that’s right, you don’t think there’s a rivalry. Well maybe not in baseball.
I’ll let you figure that one out with your own eyes.

  • MHS Fan

Hey LS, ignore no rivalry. You guys beat us in some sports, we beat you in others. MHS people, get over it.

  • Anonymous

    No Rivalry???

Typical response I world expect – when MHS wins it is because they are great; when they lose they blame the refs, or call people “chicken” for not scheduling them.

Hey, in the 2008 LS/MHS football game did you forget the imaginary pass interference call the “zebras” made against La Salle that set up your winning touchdown? LS won in 2009 because they were a better team.

    Get over it.

Congrats to La Canada for beating Campbell Hall, its good for once to see the schools who play by the rules beat a Private recruiting school, I know campbell Hall is not one of the worst schools who openly recruit but they have taken in a few good ones over the years.

La Canada will have its hands full against Cenntennial but if there is any coach in this area who can beat a good team like cenntenial its Hoffman.

As for the small schools its good to see AGBU/Pasadena win there first round game. Being the # 1 seed in that division is something new for that school. It gets tougher for them on Tuesday win they have to travel to Padre Pio,they lost to them last year,I see AGBU maybe getting by Padre but it will definitely end there because they will have to face Kilpatrick who I think its there’s to lose in the playoffs. They are NOT a # 4 seed at all, ask Marshall

Good Luck the rest of the way to both teams, they will need it.

Ummh LSHS beat Maranatha this year in football. Not sure about the prior year.

I figure you guys would be better than LSHS in all sports considering all the players you are trying to get in from NW Pasadena.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
