  • Basketball not football.

I went to watch Rosemead-Monrovia girls basketball game and I think I saw a football game. First of all, Rosemead lost because they had an off shooting night, many open shot misses, two balls that went in and came out. End of story. No excuses. When people pay $8 to see a basketball game though that’s what they should see. Instead, officials “let them play” which gives a big and physical team like Monrovia an unfair advantage. I officiate, and I understand that my job is to not give one team an unfair advantage over another. Most coaches teach players skills and the game. Now later in the season it appears some officials at more than one game I’ve seen are “letting them play.” Why give a bigger and more physical team an advantage? Monrovia’s biggest player, who is a very good player, got her second foul early in the game when fouls were being called and the rest of the game she was allowed to “let them play,” while she repeatedly pushed off and fouled opposing players. Maybe CIF wants the most likely big teams spread out among the divisions to advance so CIF Southern Section teams are strong in all divisions to go to state. I noticed Rosemead and other Mission Valley league teams in other sports like soccer are in division 5 or 6 and in basketball they are in division 3? Sierra Vista probably won’t win at Monrovia because of “let them play” mentality. Sierra Vista, like Roseemead, is small. Too bad, Sierra Vista is a class team, has basketball skills, has integrity (which is a CIF motto) and a program that shows respect to its opponents when I’ve been at their games. Rosemead lost, congratulted Monrovia, and then and went to its locker room. All class and respect, especially when things appear to not be fair. Keep your heads up Rosemead girls and coaches, you’ll be remembered for having a lot of good character. Monrovia girls, good luck the rest of the playoffs. Sierra Vista, you will need it.

Long Beach Poly Girls BB is looking to win their 5th back to back CIF State Championships. They will sweep their bracket if all goes to plan.

To the post below it seems people always blame officials when they lose in the playoffs, that’s how it goes when you win you move on , lose you go home. Bottom line is that Rosemead plays in a very and I mean weak league and lost to a decent team. Rosemead has done very well in there league but seems to struggle when they play out of it.I don’t doubt that Rosemead is first class but let’s not complain about seeding and officials when you lose.

LC lost, best of luck to remaining local teams.

    Note to Basketball Junkie:
Did you read the post? It said Rosemead lost because they shot poorly. No excuses (which would mean they know they lost because of shooting, not because of officials). I don’t think it was a complaint about officials was because they lost, it sounded like it was because a team like that from a weak league has no chance in the playoffs in 3A and never will, especially when there is such a size difference. It also said they congratulated Monrovia and then went to their locker room, that sounds like class and respect. I also agree with the statement that some officials at a few boys and girls games “let them play” and that gives the bigger team an advantage.” Rosemead should be in a much lower division or Monrovia should be higher. Good luck to Monrovia and all the other SGV girls and boys teams in the playoffs. Go SGV!
