Preseason Baseball: Time to unleash the hounds!!!

| | Comments (163) |

It's obvious that football and baseball rule the blog. Winter sports threads have gone up with little action, so at the risk of my bloggers walking into our Pasadena with bats in hand, here's your second preseason baseball thread. Whatever subjects you guys wanna talk about just post them and I'll see what I can do about making your threads happen.

Recovery for your muscles and body is significant between your routines! Our muscles need time to reimburse from the workout they have just endured. What most people don’t know is that our muscle growth takes place during sleep, not during workout. After rest, muscles are substantial than they were previously, and this allows for more growth through workout.

I was at Arcadia 1991 to 1993. I wasn't the most skilled player but good enough and was on the team soph and junior year. Then Meiers cut me and four other seniors two of which were pitchers one of which started as a junior on Varsity. Basically, he was telling you as a 17 year old your commitment meant nothing to him. He had no clue how to keep a team together and build a unit. He put his players against each other and loved doing it. It took too long to fire him.

BTW......the best player that ever played for Meiers was named Ryan Humphert. The guy had the greatest arm I have ever seen and he told Meiers to stuff it senior year and didn't even play. I was there, Humphert was the kind of kid who wanted to be left alone and just play. But Meiers couldn't let him be and ran off the best player in the school. The guy was a total loser!!!!

Why even bother?

I read this on the last blog that I was at:

"In the 114 years since chiropractic began, the existence of chiropractic subluxations has never been objectively demonstrated. They have never been shown to cause interference with the nervous system. They have never been shown to cause disease. Critics of chiropractic have been pointing this out for decades, but now chiropractors themselves have come to the same conclusion."

I find it funny how everyone bashes on Chiropractors claiming that "it is fake, just like acupuncture". And yet, when someone hurts their back, the same people dont refer them to a surgeon, they simply say "You should see a Chiropractor"

Speaking of great players. I played in Temple City. I used to play against a guy in 1991-1992 I believe his name was Ryan Humphert or Humphry. I have never ever seen an arm like his. My gosh, we used to just marvel watching him throw people out from centerfield. He was another player Meiers screwed up and did wrong I noticed. Playing against Ryan in many leagues I had never seen a centerfielder come close to what he did. Nothing fell in front of him and he threw the ball like a blast from a cannon. Other guys really came on strong in those times that I played with and grew up playing against in Pony leagues and summer leagues.

Word to the HS coaches, breed good players. Be patient, and understand the minds of 16-18 yr. olds are fragile and need to be understood. Let's not ruin anymore great players.

The worst thing that ever happened to Arcadia was having John Meires as head coach. He had no clue where to play his best athletes and it was all about booster donations. He never won anything other than an easy Pacific league with the almight Muir baseball team.LOL He cussed out his players, he was a jerk who was clueless how to form a consistent lineup and ruined many kids careers in baseball. Coaching is an art and a specila talent to mold young kids minds that are going through many changes. He could never figure that out and so players like Doug Smaldino who had no arms and little natural ability became his favorites and it cost AHS so many chances to go deep into CIF. Thank goodness they fired that pervert eventually. What a waste he was! John, you have to live with this the rest of your life. 30 years of ruining good and great ball players all for your pathetic coaching ability and bad baseball moves. I can think of several guys alone in the early 90's that were studs! They could run, hit, and gun the ball like a cannon, and he screwed them up! There were others in the mid 80's that he messed up as well. Sad......

All that is fine and dandy, but when was the last time Arcadia went deep into the CIF Playoffs?

The demographics are changing and it is impacting some of their programs. BTW, winter games don't count in the standings or ratings. Let's see how they play the last two weeks of the Pacific League and into the Playoffs.

Overrated? Demographics catching up to Arcadia? Last year was another 20 win season, A Pacific League Championship, an Elks Tournament Championship, and a Finalist in the Arcadia Invitational. They haven't dropped a notch going into this year, they have simply reloaded. Tons of winter league victories including wins over programs like Bishop Amat, San Dimas, and Claremont bode very well for the "Overrated Apaches." Demographics catching up? As my dear friend whose son attends Arcadia says, "Hell give me all the intelligent Asians you can find!" An API score near 900 and a winning baseball tradition, it doesn't get much better.

That is unfair to the great Arcadia High's baseball success. ;)

Just because under Coach John Meiers, AHS was often knocked out in their first home game of the playoffs, despite all the tourney wins and Pacific League titles.

Now, the demographics are catching up to AHS.

St. Francis is pretty even with Arcadia for DIV II Team in this area, but they still are probably 3rd in their League behind Notre Dame and Crespi. Arcadia has to deal with CV who always fields good teams, and Pasadena could be a Dark Horse in the Pacific League.

The RHL Championship has ran thru Monrovia the last 4 years, but this year looks to be even tighter than usual
TC, La Canada, return starters and San Marino only came up 1 game short of winning the RHL last Season.

Maranatha should take the Alpha League and DIV V CIF as long as Covey stays healthy.

The farthest ball Ive ever seen hit was back in 05, Trevor Bell hit a ball into the library parking lot at Arcadia. The best outfield arm is probably Jonathan Larson when hes in the outfield. The toughest pitcher is Covey, hes solid. The shortest field is hands down La Salle. They have that short porch in right. And the best baseball player that played football is Garret Tuck or Nick Bueno. I cant name 5 power hitters but the best power hitter has to be Lonnie C from Burbank.

Highschoolsoccer:

First of all, I did play soccer at times and even coached it a bit along with baseball, football, and basketball. Teaching kids to play soccer is by far easier than tackle or even flag football, basketball, and baseball.

Hitting a baseball is the single most difficult thing to do in sports; albeit, many baseball players are not the best athletes in sports, but they are no slouches either.

Part of the problem vis-a-vis soccer and baseball is that many soccer people tend to have an air of superiority as a "world game" toward more traditional "American" sports, and poo paw those of whom that play other sports and don't like their game.

Frankly, if the CIF could drop any sport from its list of approved sports, soccer would be the first to go because of all the problems is incurs. Last year, 2008-2009 had close to 600 ejections in the first eight weeks of their season, by far the tops of any sport in the Southern Section. This info comes to me from someone who knows and works with many people in the CIF-SS office.

I will not go into a soccer thread to bash their sport, but I will defend football and baseball in our threads. In reality, soccer is a fine game, but not my, nor many Americans "cup of tea" as far as spectator sports. The local professional team moved from a venue that hosted an Olympic finals, and both a men's and women's World Cup to a venue that seats about a quarter of the Rose Bowl simply because they can't fill the seats.

Frankly, soccer, especially the men's variety, is a niche sport in the US. They have been saying soccer will be big here for the past 50 years, it just does not seem to take in the spectator department over the other games. Deal with it and leave us alone.

So don't judge. I apologize for my comment. But if you cant take the comments, then don't dish em out either.

Bob Anon:

It is a combination, first most baseball people loathe soccer as well as those people usurping this thread.

Ask most HS baseball coaches about soccer and they often go off in expletives worse than any missed call by an umpire.

To the soccerphiles:

A few years ago my son was playing Pony Baseball and one of his teammates said he was not going to play baseball next season because "the ball was too small and kicking a soccer ball was easier."

I think many baseball and football people have problems with soccer is that the season never seems to end and it has cut badly into the youth Pop Warner, Junior All-American, and youth baseball programs.

It is not just a winter, fall, spring or summer sport and it is harder to play more than one sport these days which has caused a lot of resentment.

Also some of the local AYSO programs have convinced local school districts to give them priority in use of their fields. I know a few years ago Muir's baseball team could not use their own facility because of soccer.

There are also non-sanctioned leagues or groups of soccer players squatting on city parks hampering permitted activities like official league practices and games, especially at Recreation Park in Monrovia where MYBL officials had to call the local constabulary (MPD) to get these squatter off the field. They stash goal behind the bushes and just set up even during games at Rec Park and also have seen similar situations at Rosemead Park over the years.

AYSO was able to use lights at PHS for years but the neighbors balked to let Friday night football played at their own field.

Let's say there is quite a bit of bad blood between the gridders and ballers regarding futbol.

IF YOU HAVE PLAYED FOR A MAJOR LEAGUE TEAM AND MADE MILLIONS DOING SO, AND CAN PROVE IT. BY ALL MEANS SPEAK YOUR MIND, BUT EVEN THEN YOU WOULD KNOW HOW HARD IT IS. SO PLEASE KEEP YOUR IMPULSIVENESS AND DESPERETISM OF WANTING TO PUT SOCCER ON THE HIGH SCHOOL MAP, TO A LOW. Baseball is the only sport in the world where you swing a round bat in an attempt to hit a round ball coming at you very, very quickly.

A fastball coming at you at 95 mph from 60 feet 6 inches away gives you approximately .434 seconds to react before the ball is in the catchers glove.

I won't even get into trying to hit the slider or a wicked curveball.

Regarding fitness.....I urge you to talk to any high school, collegiate, or professional baseball player and inquire about the speed and core training necessary to be successful.

Trust me...the fat kid sitting on the couch all day playing video games would never be successful on a baseball field!

Odd fields in the area:

1. Southwestern Academy. Last time I checked there was a tree in right field and the oddest ground rules in town.

2. Pasadena Poly. Very short porch on right field since the construction reconfiguration, the gym roof HRs, and forever in left field possibly ending in the softball game.

3. Rio Hondo Prep. Odd shaped field, short center field, a huge bank and outfield nets.

4. Blair. Track running through the field, not kept up very well, odd ground rules.

5. Flintridge Prep. Well they don't play at home anymore, but this was right up there with Poly, and Southwestern.

6. Duarte. Not bad, but they have first base out of play situation, fans possibly in the in play area, short center field porch, and communist kickball players messing in right and center field.

7. Arroyo. Another field not sealed from fans coming to the game and some odd ground rules. The roof on the fieldhouse and bullpen area and an open right field.

Speaking of communist kickball (Association Football AKA soccer), stay in your own threads.

Baseball is Reno's second sport, behind football and only in front of golf and bowling (where a few cold pops are involved). Reno witnessed a few Jim Gott Shotz at SM back in the day. One of those towering missles reportedly brought down Sky Lab. Gott played in the majors for awhile. Also Mario Molina from Alahambra hit a ball 475 at Dos Pueblos in a CIF game that shut up the home crowd as the Moors advanced to the CIF Semi Finals under Roger Lawson. Molina was drafted by the Angels.

Montebello High has short field. Also look at Calabasas, Chaminade...

If any of you have ever heard of Faith Baptist (notable 8man football powerhouse) in Canoga Park,,,
their baseball field -- RIGHT FIELD is 200 ft!!! NO KIDDING...they do have a ground rule where if you hit OVER the shortside fence (right) of the telephone pole it's given a double, all to the LEFT of pole is HR.

Oh and their left field hovers around 280-290 I think.

That might be true in whatever country you're from but in the USA only small children and Girls play soccer.

I mean c'mon you don't even have to have any hand-eye coordination to play, just the ability to run and kick the ball.

That's why anyone can play!

Hey I got a good idea. How about all the blog people put together an all wsgv team of all seniors. And an all wsgv team of juniors and sophmores. Just for fun to see what talent is out there. Instead of a top ten for teams in the area.

Without question, Covey has far and away the best arm from the outfield. I've seen him throw guys out at home from 280' out in center field and the ball was never more than 6' above the ground still gaining speed when it reached home. Yes, he throws in the 92-95 range, but his arm is most impressive from the outfield.

Here you go:

1. TBD – Good Coaches know who not to throw to in certain situations.

2. I’d prefer to mention the no fence field at Blair. That’s the field were the track runs through center field and games have been known to be stopped to witness a 4 minute mile attempt. Balls hit to the gap have been witnessed rounding the far turn with Trevor Denman doing the play by play and Coaches grooving HR stats on Max Preps.

3. I think Will Do hit one across Duarte a few years back when visiting Arcadia. I remember a shot to left center at San Marino that Scott Smith hit in 2003. It landed on the roof of the buildings out there and was part of a 3 homer day for him. Seen a few balls hit across the wash at Stengel. That’s a shot. Rumor has it that Rob Nelson gave many a pitcher a sore neck too.

4. Covey, hands down. 90 + and if control is not established yet, a batter tends to not want to dig in. I still recall some bone bruised batters from a pre-season chuck and duck outing last year.

5. TBD - but I’m still impressed with Arcadia’s Huntzinger from last year. Dude threw beebees from right to third and home.

6. Soccer invading a baseball blog when they won’t support their own.

7. Best football player playing baseball – Bueno, Big fan of Tuck too.

Your number one blog thread as, far as comments go, so far this year was your first general baseball talk thread---57 comments; your number two thread with 37 comments was your girl's top ten soccer post way back on Jan. 6 nothing else has come close, including all your football posts! I know you hate soccer "Why soccer?" but hey give us soccer lovers a general thread to post on and transfer all these soccer comments to that thread so Base ball folks can have their thread and soccer folks can have their thread.

Goldenarm,
What are the rules about collisions at home plate as well as pitchers brushing back batters? There seems to be inconsistency between Prep and Professional.

Not sure about the long-balls. Monrovia once had a very deep left field and left-centerfield fence...it was Madison Avenue at one point in time. There were always urban legends, but I'm not sure if anyone ever cleared those old dimensions.

Have you guys found a QB yet? How is that freshman transfer from Glendale working out?

Hey TC, actually, a lot of people care about soccer. I would argue a lot of time, money and effort gets dumped into soccer.

I sincerely wonder how many kids play soccer between 9 - 13 compared to other sports?

I played FB and wrestled in SGV but I see the merit of a good soccer program.

I plan to put both my girl and boy into this sport simply to develop them, I think the other sports are listing their rankings because no one else seems to be?

1 who are the area's top 5 power hitters, I am talking about crushing the deep ball, not place hitter's or finesse swingers, but the angry, strike out or launch the pelota deep into the Station Fire THC bong cloud kinda hitter.

2 shortest fence in the WSGV

3 longest ball you baseball fanatics can recall being hit in prep play

4 this year's scariest pitcher to face down

5 best arm in the outfield

6. Worst rule or what needs a changin'

7. Best football player playing baseball

Baseball Lover,
You are correct that Arcadia hammered Bishop Amat but it was 12 to 3. Arcadia may not have a Trevor Bell or Ryan Tucker but they are loaded with good pitchers. Sean O'Leary has worked wonders with this young staff. We all know offense sells tickets but championships are won with pitching and defense. Arcadia has both. With Maranatha, St. Francis, Monrovia, Temple City, and Pasadena all fielding good teams it should be a great season.

P.S. Scott Burkholder from Monrovia (Freshman) and Eric Trask (Arcadia) are 2 youngs pitchers to watch

In my experience coaching baseball, most teams who get their paperwork in on time get placed in the tournament. Am I missing something here or is the Elks Tournament simply anti-Maranatha? Please clarify!

About the Elks tournament, its sad that those who control the tournament won't give in a little and let Maranatha in. It would be better for the entire local baseball community if they were, for many reasons. I'm not sure the reason, I've heard many different things, but it kind of feels like no one wants to take the chance of losing to a small school. It'll be interesting to see if they are allowed in next year. Good for La Salle, San Marino, and Poly for taking them on this year during the season.
