Signing Day: St. Francis' Dietrich Riley headed to UCLA

| | Comments (48) |

*UPDATE* Coming Thursday morning on the blog, "Life of Riley," a photo essay following Dietrich Riley at ESPN studios in Los Angeles.

*UPDATE* As you know by now, St. Francis' Dietrich Riley is headed to UCLA. I was there along with our photographer Sarah Reingewirtz. We were the lone media outlet allowed to go upstairs with Riley, his mother Marika McWhorter, grandmother Margaret McWhorter, uncle Darron McWhorter and cousin Kenneth Edwards. Riley's well-over a dozen family and friends waited in the lobby and watched it all unfold on TV. Riley's set lofty expectations for his first season with UCLA, where he's going to help run the Wildcat formation. Ultimately, Riley felt comfortable with UCLA and felt he belonged, a stark difference from his other trips. After I'm done writing my Signing Day story I'll provide more insight on Riley's announcement and the scenery at ESPN L.A.

By the way ... I was right. UCLA it was.

Below: Dietrich Riley goes through some sound testing before going on the air. The rest of us waited in the green room.

*UPDATE* Dietrich Riley tweeted an hour ago that it feels like NFL Draft day. Let's not get ahead of ourselves, but I'm sure this is a huge day for Riley and his family. He also tweeted that the school he's picking will come from the Pac-10, meaning Notre Dame and LSU are now out of the picture. It's down to UCLA and USC. Click here to follow me on Twitter!!!

Myself and a photographer got clearance late last night from ESPN to follow St. Francis' Dietrich Riley to be at the L.A. studio when he makes his announcement at 1:30 p.m. on ESPNU. My guess is he'll be wearing Blue & Gold next year, but nothing ever is for sure until recruits put it on paper and sign. Riley, a four-star recruit, is one of the most coveted recruits the WSGV has had in quite a while. With well over 30 scholarship offers, Riley narrowed his list to UCLA, USC, Notre Dame and LSU. We reported last week that Riley has UCLA on the top of his list. We'll have the latest when and bring it to you when it becomes available. But we know Riley is not the only local signing today. Muir's Jarron Williams is signing with Portland State and Alhambra's Mitchell Crockom signed this morning with Idaho. Muir's Taylar Mills (track) is also signing, and she's headed to UNLV. I will be leaving for L.A. around noon, and won't be back til around 2:30 p.m., so I'm asking all AD's and coaches to e-mail or call me about their players if they're signing today so they can be included in our Signing Day story.

Below: St. Francis coach Jim Bonds and Dietrich Riley pose for a picture on the set of SportsCenter Los Angeles.

Nice to have you aboard , Dietrich. You should do well at UCLA. I see the losers who took shots at Golper a year ago are still here . Probably losers on the field, in the classroom and in life as well. Oh well, too bad for them.

Angel Bec,

Thanks for the clarification and response. No need to apologize, I need to remember that my sarcasm does not translate well to the Internet.

The important thing, my friend may not be playing football but he is having a good time. Riley will have a good time at UCLA just as he would have had a good time at USC. Unlike many USC fans, I do root for UCLA out-of-conference. It would be nice to see them beat Texas this year.

It's a two-way street with USC and UCLA, and brawls hopefully stop. However, Kiffin and Neuheisel are a little more "excitable" than Dorrell or Hackett (ick!) so the passion buckets for both teams will continue to overflow.

Now let's get back to talking basketball/baseball/softball Miguel!

Angel Bec said:

Bob Anon,

Thank you for the clarification. I derive from your comment that you attended LC. A great school - great athletic program. You are correct - it all evens out. Athletics are not the bee all and end all. One must be able to read, write and know what they are talking about. I am a trojan fan although I have had family members attend UCLA. This was a year of sheer embarrasment for both teams culminating in the USC/UCLA game with both teams chanting, trash talking and storming the field. If I had a child in the position who had many D1 schools to pick from that would have really steered me away.

The arrogance of some fans destroys it for others. Both are great schools - both have great athletic programs and both can give you a great head start on life career wise.

My thoughts go out to your friend who sustained an injury that affected his choices. Life can certainly throw you some curveballs sometimes can't it?

My apologies for misreading your post. I have read your posts before and you do make good posts.

Please accept my apologies ....

Congrats to all our local sgv players who are getting the opportunity to play at the next level.Riley will be an outstanding player for the bruins, Crockom will be a great addition for the Vandels, and Williams will do his thing over at Portland St. I will be following all 3 of them next season. I hope we can get to watch some of them play in that upcoming Hall of Fame game, but i'm not sure if their UNIV allow them to play.

Bob Anon said:

Angel Bec,

Thank you for taking the time to reply to me. Regarding my maturity, I can't seem to see what you're getting at. I guess my sarcasm (in poor taste, but sarcasm nonetheless) equates to immaturity? St Francis is a rival school to the one I went to. St Francis would beat my school in football badly, but in other sports and academics, things even out. (Let me clarify: both school have great academics. I am not comparing one to the other)

The USC fanbase has lots of flaws, but with all due respect, so does the UCLA fanbase. The "my s**t doesn't stink" mentality ignores the fact that there are good and bad fans on both sides of the rivalry. Had Riley picked USC, there would be posts here or on Fred's blog upset at Dietrich.

I don't see where I am trying to take away from Riley's moment. The kid has gone through a lot, but so have many other kids. Don't get me wrong, his story is amazing. One of my closest friends suffered an injury his senior season that likely prevented him from having the opportunity of walking on at an FCS program. That guy at Baldwin Park wasn't even eligible to play this year! I use only one handle here; I am not any other anonymous poster.

the star news reported that Jerone Cox (formerly of Duarte HS) was signing with Eastern Michigan. for the life of me, I can not find his name listed on the Eastern Michigan website, nor at Rivals. was this for real??

Angel Bec said:

Bob Anon,

I mentioned that my daughter went to school alongside his school due to the fact that she has known him since being a freshman in high school when he wasn't paid particular attention to. She has seen not only what he has gone through but his family as well to get him to where he is now.

I'm not quite sure what your point was - but the point that rung out is that you are rather immature in your statements - as for maturity - please try and exhibit some.

Many of us have watched his rise during the years - stop trying to take away from that - the USC/UCLA fan base drama is rather boring ... don't you think??

Bob Anon said:

Congrats to Jarron Williams! Congrats also to Mitchell Crockom who will be attending Idaho.

I know these players aren't going to a specific school like another player is, but Crockom and Williams deserve congratulations too.

Good luck to Riley. Someone mentioned their daughter going to school near his school, well I went to the school right next to his school. (Whoopdedoo)

When Hayes Pullard decommitted from UCLA, some fans did not take too nicely to that. So let's stop throwing stones at particular fanbases and assuming certain school have only perfect angelic fanbases, yes?

Anon 10:15pm,

Golper overrated? Come on man... Soft? the kid plays with broken bones. He was a 4 star LB coming out of arcadia, rated by experts. Top ten ILB in the nation. The kid is a player and his football IQ is through the roof. Plus, he is a leader and leads by example. Colleges just don't give away D-1 rides. The kid is going to get some serious PT next season. In a scrimmage before the season at UCLA, he shocked everyone with his great performance.

TG said:

Normally I don't respond to those but I have to with this one.

If your football IQ matches your grammar and writing ability then I MIGHT possibly take your words to heart, but fortunately enough for me you should probably learn to write a proper sentence to make a valid argument. Thanks for your kindheartedness though!

@!stang! Jarron Williams has signed and will be attending Portland State...more Muir players have offers including some juniors but are waiting for final offers to be submitted...and Miguel are there more players from the pacific league going anywhere?

Witness said:

Miguel,

If USC gets handed down harsh sanctions by the NCAA, which players are allowed to transfer to the school of their choice? Just the new recruits? or all enrolled players?

Anonymous said:

Yo D, it wouldn't be my choice but more power to you brotha! UCLA is gonna be the same old UCLA, nothing spectacular, just alot of hoop la. And another thing, all you Gopler fans...Way to Over rated and Very Soft!!!

Congrats D.riley. All the hard work has paid off! MM , is there anyone else sign in the area? No players from muir ? What happen to the alhambra kid? Or M-town?

Riley, good choice. I know you will Represent the SGV to the fullest! Make us all proud. You and Golper on the same defense is going to be tremendous to watch whether someone is a UCLA fan or not. I am a USC fan and I can't wait to see you guys ball together.

Best of luck Riley!!!

Apache Joe,

Thank you for taking the time to make your comment. For those of us who have had children who have played sports and whose names have appeared on this blog - suffice it to say the remarks can be extremely painful and cutting - especially to a young person. What Mr. Riley and his family were able to accomplish was and continues to be amazing. My daughter attended high school next to his and also worked summer camps for the City of Pasadena with him. He is a very hard working, geniune and capable young man. It's unfortunate that some people find a sick thrill in showing their ignorance - especially on a blog.

With that being said - congrats big D!!! you did it and it's all yours. You have an amazing future ahead of you and you will do well. God bless and good luck!

Only a Trojan would have the immaturity and lack of sincerity to consider praising and keeping a local kid such as Dietrich documented with info on his future. Trojan fans like the ones who have written on this board are just a reflection of the bandwagoning, disrespectful, unsportsmanlike and immature fans that make up the half of the trojan fan base. I know plenty respectable trojan fans and they would never exhibit that type of poor behavior in their life. Anyone who can write on a blog anonymously and bash a kid indirectly through Miguel's reporting (of a kid who is more highly ranked than any kid coming out of high school from our area in the last 5 or 10 years) is a representation of that ugly disgraceful half that makes up part of the USC bandwagon fanbase, because the true fans, or at least the ones I have grown to become friends with, would never exhibit that type of behavior. They are true alumni.

You know what, actually I'm partially wrong. It doesn't matter if your a trojan or a bruin or any other fan of that matter Anyone that can sit here and bash a player directly or indirectly through Miguel and on a blog has no place here. Get some maturity and honor and hold your tongues. We should celebrate this.

Call me out on this one if you feel but I am sick of people bashing a kid and a reporter for doing his job covering the most highly decorated football player in our side of the SGV in 5 to 10 years.

If this was your son or daughter, you would not be gawking at the coverage. Trust me on that one.

Congratulations Dietrich on your decision. I hope all your dreams come true and you make us proud in the WSGV.

Thank you Miguel for covering this great event in his life and our football area.

Congratulations, Dietrich! It is great that you will be representing St. Francis not only at the next level, but close to home as well. I am ecstatic that you will be going to the same storied institution that Coach Bonds attended. He is one of the greatest people one could ever have the privilege to meet, let alone play for. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors. Go Golden Knights and Go Bruins!

I don't think MM would know he's been ball washing Riley. Now that this is over, where do we go from here MM? Your star has come and gone, time to move on to something new.

Good luck to Riley. But UCLA still SUCKS!!!

Hey are there any other young men in the area signing?
