Football: You gotta love Mid-Valley Div. adding Almont

The Mid-Valley Division already is fun with the Rio Hondo League and Valle Vista’s battling it out for a spot in the finals, but now we get the likes of Alhambra and San Gabriel from the Almont and Maranatha out of the Olympic League. The new division realignments are good news for our side of town, but not so much for the guys over on the East. The move to send Charter Oak, South Hills and Damien was so bad that our Freddie Robledo was compelled to say as much to CIF asst. commissioner Rob Wigod in a heated debate over the phone on Monday. But what does this mean for the Mid Valley? Alhambra, San Gabriel, Schurr and Montebello get a chance to compete in a division they belong, but we’ll still have a San Dimas-Monrovia reunion come December.

    Monrovia still the class of the division. San Dimas might as well MOVE OVER!!! because i do not think they will be in the finals again! SG new HC Jude Oliva i think he will get the right staff together and make a deep run in the new division. Schurr also will make a deep run. Maranatha i see them getting bounced early Murphy is not that great of a coach. but lets be honest the Almont is the strongest league in the division so i would not be surprised to see the Almont league having @least 1 member in the finals for the next couple of years

    “Monrovia still the class of the division” Didn’t San Dimas win the title? Champions until someone beats them. That is what I love about Monrovia, they always think they are better than everyone else.

    FYI, Murphy is an awesome coach and a perfect fit for Maranatha. He has done an incredible job over the past 5 years in the league/leagues that CIF has put Maranatha in and with the “talent” that comes to the school each year. We are not walking around blind about the upcoming season; we know that if we dont do well in League play that the playoffs dont happen. We are not going around tooting our own horn. But we have had our fair share of battles with Whittier Christian over the years and were not at all surprised by their ability to stand in the middle of the ring and slug it out with the Wildcats. I guess the saying was never so true for the Wildcats that game huh? Its better to be lucky sometimes, than good or deserving….

    I love the fact that Maranatha has joined the Olympic League. As far as Coach Murphy not being a good coach, I don’t agree with. Look what he’s been able to do in four years. They’ve gone from playing small peon schools to being a part of the Mid-Valley. Give the guy some credit, he’s building a real program. I’m not saying they will have any success come playoffs, I’m actually quite skeptical if they will at all. Not that it’s that bold of statement but I’m going to go out on a limb and say that Schurr wins it all. San Dimas is still the king, sorry Monrovia, and schools like Whittier Christian, Azusa, Baldwin Park, and Alhambra are the princes.

    The new look Mid-Valley is great. CIF really did a good job here. Teams are going to have to fight tooth and nail to just get to the playoffs, except for the top-tier teams like Monrovia and SD. Losing Paraclete seemingly weakens the MV a smidgen, but adding the Almont and Maranatha makes the division a little better all around. The playoffs will be fun, but league play may be as equally exciting.

    There are 37 teams in the divisions, which means 21 teams are out. Meanwhile in the Southeast you have 28 teams and only 12 teams that miss out. I’d like ice with that “watered-down” version, thank you. The Southeast, while a little more top-heavy then the Mid-Valley, has a lot to be desired.

    Good job on the Mid Valley CIF.

    The Southeast Division looks very favorable for Pacific League teams but who is in the Hacienda League? I have never heard of it.

    The new Hacienda League consists of Walnut, West Covina, Los Altos, Bonita, Diamond Ranch, Diamond Bar and Rowland. Two time champ charter oak is out of the DIV. I think it was the old Miramonte league.

    Almont league teams will go far in the play offs. I mean Who can stop Schurr, SG, or Alhambra easily in the playoffs in this division??? Hell now Keppel might have a chance to be in the playoffs now. If it had been like this since 2000, how many Championships would the Almont teams have already?!

    Although I wouldve preferred if you went into a little bit more detail, I still got the gist of what you meant. I agree with it. It might not be a popular idea, but it makes sense. Will definitely come back for more of this. Great work

    Both are load agin.

    Cantu at schurr is not moble enough to slow down those two defenses.

    San Dimas will know how to stop the Wing T from alhambra

    San Gabriel can’t match the Speed of Monrovia

    The best part about this division is that each league has only two guaranteed playoff spots. Most of these leagues can produce two quality teams every year. In the past, though, the weaker third place teams made for very uninteresting first round games. Hopefully this realignment makes rounds 1-4 meaningful. One aspect I don’t like, though, is the subjective nature of choosing the “at-large” teams. Overall, though, cutting down the number of guaranteed spots is a great concept for quality football. It used to be that only league champions made the playoffs…

    I don’t understand why all of a sudden San Dimas is considered to have such a great defense! I think that is a joke! The first ten games they played their opponents had a combined record of 45-63; only Monrovia, Baldwin Park, and Pomona had a winning record, and Pomona is stretch considering they played no one in preseason (ex. Keppel and Gabrielino)! In addition to that, they gave up over 300 yards of offense in the majority of their wins, including over 300 yards on the ground by Monrovia and Bonita! Now i will give credit where credit is due, when SD played teams with winning records in the playoffs they won, however, i don’t give the credit to there defense; in fact, i would say there best defense is there offense! All you need is 2 to 3 stops a game, because your offense is scoring every other possession!

    WOW WHAT A GREAT MOVE BY CIF. THIS WILL GIVE THE ALMONT LEAGUE TEAMS A CHANCE TO MAKE DEEP RUNS. SAN DIMAS AND MONROVIA WITHOUT A DOUBT ARE GOOD TEAMS, I DONT BELIEVE HOWEVER, THAT MONROVIA WAS WORKING ON ALL CYLINDERS, IN THAT FINAL GAME AGAINST SD, OR ELSE THEY WOULD HAVE EASILY WON. (SHOULD OF, COULD OF, WOULD OF, OH WELL) SD MAY THINK THEYRE THE ”WING-T STOPPERS” AND BIG DOGGS OF THE DIVISION BUT WE WILL HAVE TO SEE THIS YEAR. IN ORDER FOR THE WING-T TO PRODUCE EFFICIANTLY, THE LINE HAS TO BE GOOD AND THAT ALHAMBRA HAS. SD HAS TO GET BY BOTH ALHAMBRA’S AND MONROVIAS WING OFFENSE. BUT FOR NOW GOODLUCK TO ALL TEAMS! CANT WAIT TILL THE CLEATS COME ON! GO MOORS!!

    I dont care where you put Alhambra, you can put them in division 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,1000 i dont care where you put them, i DONT care you put them in 8 man league we dont care as long we get to play the under the legendary Lou Torres. All this is media and hype i dont care bring on monrovia, san dimas, muir, pasadena all due respect to those teams i mention for all i care bring long beach poly or de la salle concord. 2010 Alhambra is back in stride with Wing T or the Power I i dont what we run. OLD SCHOOL IS BACK AT ALHAMBRA HIGH SCHOOL!!!!

    Finally the Almont is placed where they should have been a long time ago. They could not come close to hanging in the other division, especiallty Alhambra and SG. They still can’t beat the Cats or the Saints.

    It’s about time. SG And alhambra have been playing, San marino, TC, So Pas, and even Monrovia in the preseason over the last decade. The almont teams usually win or lose a close one. Then those teams go to the second or third rounds of their playoffs, unreal. It only makes sense because they are all in the SGV, and almont teams don’t have to travel for an hour.

    Alhambra wasted some very good offensive lineman last year…as did TC. From what they say of Torres, he is the type to challenge his line day in and day out to get physical and “man up” to their blocking responsibilities.
    Former TC line coach Marti Valdes taught on the same wave length…and in my opinion, this is the road to winning ballgames.
    The Moors have been sleeping underperforming giants for too long…if this ship ever gets righted, it will be a strong house over on 6th street.

    Those of you who continue to see Monrovia as less than bad ass….are mistaken. True, they had several “off” games last year, their offense sputtered and was unimaginative big time. You think Maddox will not address this????
    GA prediction to remember – M-town will score and score again on spec teams next year….kickoffs, punts, etc

    here we go again! ooh how good is Alhambra! we’ve heard the same song and dance year in year out! last year was suppose to be the year! and how did u start the year off? getting smashed by L.A. Roosevelt! I hope coach Torres does make big changes! cuz he’s going to need it! SG always makes it interesting with what lil they got! good luck coach oliva! schurr’s rein over the almont league might be over if Bell Gardens can get their heads out of their butts! Montebello should still have the best kids in the league, but coaching will depend on it so i doubt it. it should be an interesting year in the mid-valley div. good luck to all the teams if the crappy re-allignment goes thruw

    Alhambra is OVERRATED! we will see what Torres is doing. Last year you think he waisted linemen? i think that wing t is a waste of skill. As far as SG being better w/out Jones. We will have to see but Coach O isnt a slouch. I know he will have those kids believing and will not miss a step. He’ll keep SG good and with the new division i feel as though they will make a deep run. Move over idk Coach Murphy personally but i think he has turned Maranantha around. Monrovia is DEFINETLY the team to beat in this Division.. San Dimas got their butts kicked the first time around and Monrovia probably thought they had it all but won. In the spirit of the tournament my final 4 teams SG SCHURR MONROVIA SAN DIMAS. Check this post during the playoffs next year!! i GUARANTEE i get @ least 3 of the 4!! NO BRACKET BUSTERS!! HAHAHAHAHAAHAHA

    ALHAMBRA WAS INDEED OVERRATED LAST YEAR. SOME OF ITS SUPPORTERS WERE, I SHOULD SAY A BIT BIASED WHEN IT CAME TO THE DUO OF THE QB AND THE O-COORDINATOR. AND THATS WHERE WE GOT ALL THE HYPE COMING IN ABOUT ALHAMBRA. OF COURSE EVERYONE WHO NEW THESE AND WERE LIVING IN REALITY KNEW IT WASNT GOING TO WORK THE WAY “IT SHOULD HAVE” CROCKUM WASNT EVEN A THREAT (HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN AFTER A GREAT JR. YEAR) BUT AGAIN, EVERYONE SHOULD UNDERSTAND THAT THE OC AND QB ARE LONG GONE, AND THERES A NEW STAFF, AND THEREFORE IM SURE THEY ARE STRIVING FOR THE BEST TO GET ALHAMBRA OUT OF ITS “OVERRATED” SLUMP. I DONT REALLY SEE ANYONE CALLING OUT LEAGUE CHAMPS OR DIV. CHAMPS FOR THE MOORS, ALL THAT IS BEING SAID IS THE COMPETITION SHOULD BE BETTER AND THE MOORS SHOULD MAKE STRONGER STRIDES.
