BREAKING NEWS: PHS rallies from 6-0 deficit, wins 9-7

Burbank scored six runs in the first three innings, but if it thought the game was over Burbank sure had another thing coming. Pasadena’s Robert Lain needed only one pitch to hit a grand slam over the center field wall and the Bulldogs added four more in the sixth to cap a remarkable come-from-behind 9-7 win over Burbank on Tuesday afternoon in the Pacific League opener for both schools. William Yost started the two-out, five-run rally with a single to center. Andrew Phillips followed suit with another single to center and Chris Rucker’s RBI single brought home Yost to start the rally and make it 6-1. Chris Klein got hit by a pitch to load the bases, that’s when Lain came to the plate and, to say the least, made things interesting. Ivew Brown started the sixth with a single that rolled by the pitcher and took a bounce off the mound. He beat the throw to second. Phillips singled to right and Chris Rucker’s RBI single to right field scored Brown to make it 6-6. Klein loaded the bases again with a bunt that got past Burbank pitcher Chase Mersola. The throw to first was not in time. Lain, again facing a bases loaded situation, hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Phillips for the winning run. Kevin Winder put the icing on the cake with a single to right field, scoring Rucker and Klein for a 9-6 lead. Klein picked up his first win in two appearances. He walked and gave up a hit to the first two batters in the seventh, had two fielder’s choice for the first two outs, allowing Mersola to score and make it 9-7. Klein got Ryan Favor to ground out to second for the final out. Pasadena showed grit. It took longer than expected, but the bats finally came alive when confidence sunk in. Burbank pitcher Taylor McCauley perhaps played an inning too long. He had given up only two hits heading into the fifth. It wasn’t until midway through the sixth when McCauley was replaced.

Great Job Robert a Grand-Slam Sweeet!

    Congrats to Jeff and Tanya…

  • Thanks

So, the track season is almost 1/2 over, so is swim, nothing about either. Thanks!

  • Cyclops

Looks like the PHS crew may be on the map again this year, with a 7-2 start. When was the last time PHS started a season with those numbers? When Matuzak was there in the 60′s and 70′s? Congrats to Parisi, Lain, and the rest of the ‘Dogs crew for a nice come-back win against a powerful Burbank team. We’ll see if they move up in the Star News local rankings next week. We are all looking forward to another season of upsetting the bigger, better ranked teams in the area and competing in the Pacific League with some other very well-balanced teams. It’s anybody’s guess how that league will turn out this year!

This is so awesome. The majority of Burbank players and parents are arrogant scum bags. It starts with the coaches. Last year one of the coaches for Burbank tried to fight a parent from Arcadia. How classless can one be? The Kaupalas are on another level of arrogant, I won’t even get started on them.. GREAT JOB PASADENA! BIG WIN

  • bulldog for life.

nice win bulldogs. you guys are going straight to the top.

  • Burbank Hater

That Burbank kook Bob Hart … man what a schmuck.

He tried to cheat his way out of a baseball game by taking advantage of a disrepaired scoreboard to manipulate the score of a SUMMER BASEBALL GAME two to three years ago in a contest against Gabrielino. Gabrielino had led throughout the game until the treacherous closing moments.

Coach Hart thought he’d gotten a walkoff win (it was a 2RBI hit, 7-6 final according to him) but my book and that of a parent whom I;d been next to and penciling, comparing every hit run and pitch with THE ENTIRE GAME showed 7-7, matched each other and of course went against whatever he had so, two against one…nasty argument between the HC’s. Coach Hart then even had the nerve to invoke references to conspiracy theorists as in “cmon there’s no Kennedy conspiracy” and so on to the face of my head coach. The umpire didn’t really want anything to do with it and pretty much said fine two books against one fine it;s a tie then…wasn’t that sincere either he wanted to go home.

Shame on Bob Hart and Burbank baseball forever for their impudence!

Realist, thanks for bringing back such an infamous memory with your post.

proud of phs and for those those players, but there are 13 games left and tomorrow get over the win. Something to talk about after the season. Burbank will have nightmares over that game…….Welcome to playing 7 innings

  • mike limas

Pasadena did a great job vs. a sorry burbank team they still need to beat the power house arcadia to prove that they are really ready to be mentioned

  • Scott Hart

Good job Pasadena way to beat burbank but there are still some good team out there like CV and Arcadia.
Both school play hard and with heart. Burbank and Bourghs play with high tempers such reflections of there coaches. the families from Burbank should not care so mucn as to figh other parents pleas do people from burbank know how to control themselfs

  • GG

Congratulations to Mike Parisi and the Bulldogs on a great comeback! FANTASTIC hit Robert Lain!!

  • featherhead

Solid and gritty win for the dawgs over a pretty good Burbank squad. Great to see Parisi and his kids toughing one out early… now put it on CV.

Mister realist, if you have something to say about the Kauppila’s, one spell it right and do it to their face not in the website. Some class act you are to hide behind a message board. Grow UP!

Burbank Hater, since you can’t move on with your life, did you check the checker past of your coach Parisi, Bob Hart has never had a problem with CIF and the Law. Like you know who did at Arcadia. Don’t throw stones, when you have no glue about what you are talking about. I still rather live and go to high school in Burbank than Pasadena Also.

Can we please have these posters that are using head coaches names removed? This is ridiculous.

  • d-mgee

    Anon,

Nobody is scared to say anything to the Kauppila’s. Yes they are incredible players, Lonnie is most likely the top SS in California, but they are classless people. Nobody will miss them when Lonnie graduates.

  • PHS Phan

    Dear Principal Evans,

Kindly note the superior baseball coach, Mike Parisi, you have at your school. He continues to do amazing things with a limited number of players in the program. He clearly deserves a chance to be a more permanent part of the PHS Coaching Landscape. How about a Real job for a hard working coach/teacher, who by the way has a masters degree.

It is wonderful, truly sweet for PHS Football and soccer, to enjoy their million dollar playground. But the baseball team players work just as hard and each day perform maintenance and physical work to maintain their sad field. It’s not fair.

How many full time jobs go to the football and basketball coaches at PHS?

How many go for the baseball coaches?

    Zero.

    Sincerely,

    Loyal PHS Supporter

P.S. “All we are saying, is give Parisi a chance”

Hey phs phan, the principal of PHS has little if any say over money allowcated to their baseball program, particularly the field, and besides PHS has the best field in the city by far. By the way, the coach has only been there a few years.

  • bulldogs

the bulldogs have done a great job developing their players.

  • PHS Phan

The lads are doing great. We just need Dr. Evans to do the right thing and give the man a job at the school.

    Miguel,
I know you are relatively new to the area so I’m going to help you out a little. In this morning’s Pacific League note you said, and I quote, “traditional powers Burbank and Crescenta Valley are on the outside looking in.” One out of two isn’t bad. The past 15 Pacific League titles have gone to either Arcadia, or C.V., these are the traditional Pacific League powers. I don’t know what it is you have against Arcadia, but it is becoming quite obvious to everyone that reads the Star News that there is a bias. It’s okay, we will do just fine without your support, but please, at least keep the facts straight. Traditional powers indeed…..

  • No AD’s in PUSD

It’s going to be hard to keep the few good PUSD coaches, especially considering that the district has eliminated the Athletic Director position at all four high schools starting next year. Sad times I tell ya.

The league always goes through Arcadia and CV. If you take a look at the last 18 years Arcadia only has 5 titles. It’s not like they have dominated the league. So take a deep breath before you attack Miguel. CV has dominated the league unfortunatly. No one in the west sgv wants that. This year Burbank has a loaded senior oriented squad that will contend for the league title. CVs best players are sophmores who can compete with anyone. The league is wide open and everyone knows that.

I believe you are the same poster that said, you heard that Arcadia and a couple of other local schools didn’t want to play Maranatha. We heard there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, artificial sweeteners were safe, and Anna Nicole married for love. Be careful about what you “hear.” As far as the Pacific League,in the past 12 years C.V. has 7 titles, Arcadia 5, and nobody else SQUAT! In the years that one or the other of those 2 teams didn’t win the league they were always in the hunt, finishing well enough to earn a CIF Playoff berth. Burbank’s senior loaded, C.V. has sophs that can play with anyone, la de da de da. You are talking about potential, and everyone that knows sports, knows potential means you haven’t done anything yet. The Apaches are the DEFENDING PACIFIC LEAGUE CHAMPIONS! Until someone knocks them off that’s how it will stay and you and your prognostications will remain totally irrelevent.

Burbank and Burroughs both have no class, they are showing everyone how not to play the game right. It starts with the coaching staff and how they let their players get away with anything and everything……get the dads off the field.

  • Realist

    FAN-

You are 100% right. This past week when Arcadia beat down Burroughs. A Burroughs player came out of their dugout and got in the Arcadia first baseman’s face. Which then led to benches clearing. Then a parent of Burroughs came onto the field with a bat threatening the Arcadia players.. What is the deal with that? Where is the discipline? What trashy people. Its the same with Burbank!

  • Anonymous

If you do your research and understand the Pacific League then you would realize CV has won 9 out of the last 12 and Arcadia 5. Remember now CV co champed with Parisi’s teams in 02 and 03 eventhough Arcadia beat them 2 out of 3. Non the less Arcadia is the defending champs and until someone else knocks them off, they are the favorites, especially after how the start of the season has gone.

  • Realist

    Anonymous:

The Pacific League has gone through TWO schools in the last 12 years. It doesn’t matter who has been better in the past 12 years. Because for some odd reason Miguel put Burbank in the ranks of Arcadia an CV. Which should never happen. The League title will be won through one if not both of these teams. So Miguel has it wrong. It doesn’t matter how great Burbank is, because tradition will have something to do with results in the pacific League. Just look what Arcadia did to Burroughs.
