CIF STATE PLAYOFFS
SOCAL REGIONAL
TUESDAY'S SCORES
FIRST ROUND
DIVISION II
LIBERTY 69, KEPPEL 49
-- Liberty of Bakersfield used a 10-0 run in the third quarter to fuel its momentum, and didn't allow Keppel to get within nine in the first round of the Southern California Regional. The Aztecs (24-7) trailed 29-19 at the half. They were led by Sam Thim's 19 points. Timmy Wong was held to just eight points. Keppel made its deepest playoff run this season with a semifinal appearance in the CIF-SS Division 2A playoffs. It was the Aztecs' first appearance in the CIF State Playoffs.

PASADENA 64, UNIVERSITY 44 -- Pasadena overcame an unmotivated first quarter, kicked it into third gear in the second quarter and took off in the fourth, dispatching University High of Los Angeles, 64-44, in the first round of the Southern California Regional CIF State Division II playoffs Tuesday night. George Toyama finished with a team-high 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Chris Bridges, who finished with five steals in the game, added 11 points. Fellow junior Todd Lewis Jr. also added 11 points. University was led by David Nwaba, who scored 20 points. Anthony Harris added 15. No other Wildcat player scored in double figures. Pasadena will visit Murrieta Valley in Thursday's second-round action.

SOCAL REGIONAL
TUESDAY'S SCORES
FIRST ROUND
DIVISION III
MUIR 52, FRONTIER of BAKERSFIELD 38
-- The Mustangs forced 30 turnovers and held visiting Frontier of Bakersfield to 30.6 percent shooting (15 of 49) en route to a 52-38 victory in the opening round of the Division III state playoffs.

DIVISION V
FRESNO CHRISTIAN 53, PASADENA POLY 49
-- The Eagles rallied from a 29-26 halftime deficit and made a clutch 3-point shot when the Panthers tried to rally back in the opening round of the Division V state playoffs in Fresno. "That week off hurt us," Poly coach Kim Weber said. "We didn't know if we were going to be in and out. We lost our wind and that was something that helped us throughout the season. In the first two minutes, I could see the gas already." The Panthers, who advanced to the CIF-SS Division 5A semifinals, typicall play with only two or three substitutes rotating in and out. Sophomore Michelle Miller, the state's leading scorer, had 26 points and nine steals. She had to guard 6-foot-4 Paige Armstrong-Maltos, who had 20 points.

PHS should win this game however they can't let Murrieta Valley stay in the game because they won't get any calls in the end. Go Bulldogs!

Miguel, I never stated PHS had no chance, what I stated was they were lucky to have a chance. Eisenhower shot more FT’s because they were the aggressor’s, PHS played on their heels all day and did not adjust to use their superior inside presence (Eisenhower's tallest player was 6'2). PHS got in the penalty to fast because they could not guard #20 or #25 man to man which they insisted on playing. In the first quarter #20 beat 3 different defender to the basket on almost 3 consecutive trips down the court, that was the time to go to a zone. In the second half #25 picked up where #20 left off. Barber should have been in the game, everyone was having an off night because Eisenhower had them playing so fast everyone was out of rhythm. If Tucker goes to a zone early it slows down the game and allows his team to get in sync. Also if Tucker takes the blame for the loss don’t be soft and not report it. By not reporting you made it looks like Tucker was throwing his players under the bus. Coaches are suppose to put their players in the best situation they can and he did not do that. From someone who was there and knows a little about basketball it was very obvious the way PHS came out after halftime Tucker was overmatched in this one. Sitting in the area after half time I never thought PHS would win, they had no rhythm, no swagger. Yes they should win tonight this team according to maxpreps is 19 and 14 not 19 and 4. PHS can do some damage in this tourney if they cut down their mistakes and play together.

IJS: To be far, Tucker did take the blame for the loss. He said so himself when he said in the postgame conference that the blame falls on him for not adjusting, though I didn't use the quote. Still, I disagree that PHS had no chance. They had the looks, they had a bunch of shots rattle in and out, and it's still a mystery how PHS had only 10 free throw attempts and Eisenhower had 32. 32!!! Barber sitting down stemmed from an off night. Matchup wise he should have had the advantage, but the shots just weren't falling. PHS should win tonight.

Tucker and Miguel let’s be real PHS was lucky to even have a chance last Saturday. If I’m Eisenhower I’m saying to myself we missed 16 or 17 free throws and went 3 for 22 from 3’s. If Eisenhower makes 6 or 7 more free throws and 3 more 3’s it’s not close. Tucker the game was lost when you would not go to a zone and make Eisenhower prove themselves from the perimeter. Eisenhower had 2 player that no one on PHS could guard, #20 & #25 both could get anywhere on the court they wanted at anytime, this is why they shot more FT’s, no one could stay with them man to man. Eisenhower ran a spread offense shot fast and from everywhere and that’s why the big men for PHS were out of position and ineffective most of the time. Eisenhower made PHS play their game and PHS was not used to playing that fast hence the poor shooting and turnovers, they had no rhythm. Also why Barber was set down for a long period of time is a mystery to me. Like Lewis this game was made for him so Tucker leaving him on the bench proved to be a big mistake. PHS has problems with athletic teams and definitely fast guards which they will see in the state tourney. I am a PHS fan so I hope they do well however everything has to be in sync players and coaches. Tucker take your share of the blame for the loss, your inability to adjust cost your team just like the 5 turnovers in a row. Good luck PHS regroup and go get em.

Well it's about time for the All-Area Basketball Team selections and I wonder who will make first team:

Deshawn Muir - Leading Scorer in the SGV
George PHS - Has carried the team all year
Don't know about anybody else but those two are a lock. Any thoughts!

Pasadena Bulldogs Basketball, your time to sulk cannot last long because the Wildcats of University High School, who they themselves lost in their respective division championship game, will be visiting. This is now the time to step up and prove that a bad Saturday was just that, a bad Saturday. Like history class taught us about history, let it serve to teach and avoid mistakes. Simply stated, let your defense be your base and execute your shots a.k.a. make your shots, win the rebound battle on both ends, and DO NOT TURN THE BALL OVER. If you do this then you will forget Saturday and experience the glory of the coronation that a state championship brings. It happened for Pasadena in 1977, how great would it be to bring another one to Pasadena High School in 2010 and know that you had something to do with this. BULLDOGS, READY SET GO!
