Football: Don’t hold your breath on coaching vacancy

i-5dd0e07bc4dffeeb62b93b6456896e5e-Temple City.jpg

Temple City High School athletic director John Van DeVeere said the school wanted to announce its next football coach last Friday, but cautioned a decision might not be made until this week. Just got off the phone with Temple City High principal Mary Jo King and said an announcement will come “hopefully by next week.” King added: “We’re trying to see if we have a teaching position with a coaching position. Ideally we’d like to have a coach on campus.” The hurdle right now is finding a teaching position. It’s protocol that any teaching openings be flown within the district first. As for the growing frustration among the Temple City faithful …. “We just tell them to try to be patient,” King said. “We’re trying to find the best coach we can have.” Multiple sources confirmed Whittier Christian defensive coordinator Pete Karavedas and Pasadena coach Mike McFarland are the two finalists for the position, but a twist came when Karavedas withdrew his name from the running. Here’s a message Aram Tolegian wants to get across to the big wigs at Temple City Unified:

Seriously, how hard is it to hire a football coach? When are schools going to understand that the football (coach) is the most important position on campus? And the football program means EVERYTHING to the school. You have a good football program and I guarantee you’ve got a good everything else. It’s kind of like what obesity is to health problems, but in a good way. Trust me. So an administration and/or school board HAS TO make this hire the most important thing around. No teaching position? OK, cut one of the 10 asst. principals every school has but doesn’t need. What? Do I need to run for school board and show people how it’s done? This has nothing to do with AD John Van De Veere (he’s actually a football guy with his hands tied) and everything to do with the administration/school board. Word is that Karavedas got tired of waiting on a school that’s dragging its feet. So does this make McFarland the man? Either guy seems like a great choice, so hopefully the school doesn’t lose out on McFarland, too.

The Mayor of the blog, Goldenarm, isn’t happy with the seemingly drawn out process:

The proud tradition of TC football has been toileted, and Van De Veere gets no free pass from me – he is one of the few who should have known better – AND DONE MORE. True, the admin may pull rank and power on him now, but during the Backus dismissal he was front and center and happy to lead the charge. Big mistake.

If Karavedes saw the writing on the wall and declined to continue for the reasons you state…that really sucks. The Ram kids, TC parents, boosters and supporters deserve much better than they are getting from TCUSD and the high school administrators. As a direct result of their actions and inaction, it will take years for TC football to recover.

I am sorry to say the news just keeps getting worse and the ineptness more blatant. For long time Ram fans, it seems like a dark, surreal dream that just won’t go away.

  • HAHA

The football coach is the most important position on campus? What kind of school is that, and I played football!

After reflecting on life, having kids and watching them play sports I have come to realize that it is sad that “football” gets so much press, so much money when the culture is so sick.

I BEG you to actually go in depth and get the g.p.a rates of all the sports and compare them. Compare what sports cultivate kids that go out and do great things – check the percentages and then ask “what are the other sports doing right?”

My boy played ball and then switched sports, and the change in him was positive and wonderful. I see happen at the school my kids go to but society seems to worship football.

I KNOW BALL has some great kids, but the statements this paper just wrote “most important” “everything to a school.” These are over the top and downright lies, did you take a poll on campus?

The bias reporting of this “paper” is a joke.

what is the deal with the image test??

    Goldenarm,

I don’t see anything in the spam section. The image test is to weed out the crappy spam comments, which really dragged down the blog.

Looks like HAHA got cut from his football team back in the day

    HAHA….

Football is the most important sport on campus! There was a study done and it stated… “When a football program is doing well, test scores and morals are very high on campus. Fans, student, teachers, administration, everyone is happy…” and when a football program is not doing well or there are problems with the football program, everything is down!!!

That being said, sorry you or your kid had a bad experience with football.

  • Teacher

I am a teacher at a large public school, I have seen the good and the bad in the last 13 years here. I would love to see whatever study that was, because I know, I KNOW it is flawed.

I am with ha ha, our football coach is NOT and should NOT be the most important person on campus. Like HA HA, I played ball, and I did not get cut.

Like so many others have stated here, it would be nice for other sports to get their due.

  • New York

By the nature of the game, football has the greatest number of students participating. Therefore, a head football coach is charged with leading a greater number of students than is any other head coach on campus. By sheer numbers, it seems the Head Football coach would rank among the most important positions on campus. An FB HC also has a regular teaching load as well. So, the HC has the same number of classroom students as non-coaching teachers plus an additional 100+ football players to look after. Schools should never underestimate the importance of the head football coach.

The school’s principal is charged with setting the direction and vision, but likely does not have as intimate contact with the number of students that the Head football coach does.

Thanks to the 24-hour media, coaches tend to get a lot more press than anyone else on campus. So, you had better not pick a future embrassment.

In 1998 Herb Childress, an ethonographer, with a Doctorate in Environmental-Behavior from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, wrote an online article explain “Seventeen Reasons Why Football is Better than School”. I think if many of you read this article it may change your opinion on football, football players, and football coaches; and if you are an educator it may change how your teaching approach!

By the way, i apologize for no knowing how to properly display the link!

  • A Former Track Coach

Sorry, but at my school there are 135 kids on the track team, 62 on the football.

Swim at Mark Keppel has 115 kids (my nephew swims there and it is a crazy big sport there – I doubt FB matches it.

No biggie, I love football but was just giving you stats that I am sure match up at other schools. I have taught at 3 public schools now and it was the same.

Not trying to argue but I see the Teachers point.

  • Goldenarm

Bassett just hired a new head football coach.
Background on this guy, Cieslik, reads like an ideal coach for Temple City.
With no serious organized lifting and conditioning happening at TC in the interim…and a coach starting late, late, late – below is what a late arriving coach can find waiting for him.

“Here’s the bad news, though. Cieslik reports he’s practicing with about 20 players in the week since he’s taken over. Not good! Cieslik says most of the players are sophomores because the returning upperclassmen don’t feel like they have to show up. Again, no bueno”.

Apathy, lack of interest, and the lack of bodies with no time to go hunting for others…all challenges Tip Sanders saw at Duarte last year. Tip started with 4 kids.

  • New York

    Track Coach,
Valid points. I suppose in those situations, the track and swim coaches could be considered among the most important positions on campus.

Are attendance to track and swim events large as well? Community attendance could be another factor to consider. That will tend to give weight to basketball.

Unsung heros often include band instructors and drama instructors at schools with a large participation.

*hopefully this will get posted. this is my third attempt at responding. I think this “Captcha” security mechanism is not cooperating.*

  • where is the coach?

Another football coach is hired in the SGV and it’s not at TCHS.
The new direction at TCHS must be NO MORE FOOTBALL.
The Administration and AD are destroying school & community pride.
    Shameful.
TC it’s time to stand up & speak out.

WOW! Look at all the folks with BHD(Bush Haters Disease)! Talk about somebody not doin’ their job. NObama, I mean Obama(Oprah’s lap dog) has only been in in Congress doing his job about a grand total of 120 days, look it up! The rest of the time he’s been running for President. McCain can earned his time off after 20 YEARS of Congressional work. He’s gotten more legislation through than Obama will ever get through even if he becomes Commander in Chief. Heck, Gov. Palin has done more governmental work just in her state than Obama ever will!
