Baseball: Arcadia flexes muscles, wins 8-0 to go 9-0

The view from atop the Pacific League standings keep getting better and better for the Arcadia High School baseball team. If nothing else, the Apaches flexed their muscles and proved why they’re the defending league champions with a convincing 8-0 win over Pasadena on Friday afternoon.
Arcadia (17-3, 9-0) is a more balanced team this season, but there’s no doubt that seniors Garrett Tuck and Jonathan Larson are the Apaches’ bread and butter. Tuck scattered three hits across five innings to pick up his sixth win of the season. Larson went 3 for 3 and scored a run in the sixth after drawing a walk. He laid down a beauty of a bunt down the third-base line for a single on the first pitch in the fourth with two outs, catching Pasadena (12-10, 5-4) completely off guard. Larson’s bunt single scored Erik Trask from third, who reached first on an error. In fact, the Bulldogs were marred by three errors, two of which came in the sixth on a single play that scored Jonathan Tom and Larson to make it 8-0.

Not surprising. Afterall, Arcadia is the best team in the area.

As long as the Cats have “Wayne Tao” You’ll always be 2nd best.

Could be ….BUT…. because Arcadia decided not to fit Maranatha into their schedule this year, we will, VERY UNFORTUNATELY never know for sure. I think you ARE..The best PUBLIC school in the area for sure!
How about this…As soon as Arcadia and Maranatha are finished with both of their playoff runs…wait a week and schedule a game. I bet the players would be up for it!!

    Wait just a minute-

Now, now, now. Maranatha lost to La Salle and San Marino. All they have is Covey. And trust me, he can’t do it all at a competitive level of baseball. Maranatha’s defense is decent at best. So if a team just puts the ball in play, they are in good shape.

  • Wait just a minute

    Realist-
You must remember something, Maranatha split double headers with San Marino and La Salle. Covey did not even pitch against San Marino and Maranatha beat them in the first game 14-4 with Beckwith on the mound (A player you seem to have overlooked). Also, Covey beat La Salle, giving up just one earned run, striking out 9 in 5 2/3.
In the other game,Beckwith left the game after 4 innings with a lead due to an early season pitch count, giving up only 2 earned runs in 4 innings while striking out 7.
Look at the stats next time before you try to say things like “All they have is Covey”.
Remember, it was your coach who messed up by not scheduling Maranatha when he had the chance. That leaves you only with your opinion.
I like to base my comments on stats like 7 wins in a row, top 2 pitchers Covey 0.14 ERA, Beckwith 1.50 ERA etc…
Also, whats the best team you’ve defeated this year??
Maranatha beat Damien in a tournament Championship that Covey only threw 2 innings in.

  • If You Look At Stats…

    Wait Just a Minute-

If it is stats you base your comparison off of, how about looking into them better yourself.

    Runs/game: Arcadia- 7.6 Marantha- 6.0
    Runs allowed/game: Arcadia- 2.2 Maranatha- 4.3
Team Batting Avg.: Arcadia- .339 Maranatha- .309
    Extra BH/game: Arcadia- 2.2 Maranatha- 1.8
Fielding Percentage: Arcadia- .953 Maranatha- .897
    ERA: Arcadia- 1.70 Maranatha- 2.02

Now… Arcadia averages outscoring their opponents by 5.4 runs. Maranatha only averages outscoring them by 1.7.

Maranatha’s losses (with records): Sylmar (12-11-1), Newbury Park (17-7), Golden Valley (10-11), Taft (14-9), La Salle (9-12), Paraclete (10-9), San Marino (10-11), Lakeside (9-11-1)

Arcadia’s losses (with records): Northview (14-4-1), Alhambra (18-4), Glendora (18-2-1)

Last but not least, while Maranatha can steal bases off subpar Division V catchers, try running on an outstanding Division II catcher like Lucas, who has thrown out 10 of the 14 runners who have tried to steal on him… runners are only successful 28.6% of the time.

your right, lets talk stats. There they are. You lose. Nice try though.

    Realist –
If you want to talk Divisions, How many Division 1 teams has Arcadia played?
Maranatha played 5 of them to start the season.
Still, the bottom line is, your coach didn’t have the guts to play Maranatha so thanks to him, all we have are opinions.

  • just the facts

maranatha will win the divisions because of covey.

arcadia will lose in the 1st or 2nd round like always.

arcadia is a better team in a higher division, maranatha has a once in a lifetime pitcher that they will ride to the championship.

I just laugh at the nonsense of parents bickering about whose high school baseball team is better. Its a little ridiculous.
