Tennis: San Marino’s Moya wins USTA’s scholar grant

San Marino senior Michael Moya won the 2010 Pancho Gonzalez Scholar Athlete grant for his high school national tennis ranking, commitment to academics and getting a good educational foundation. A tennis pioneer, Gonzalez blazed a trail for Hispanic athletes becoming one of the first Latinos to play a major sport, opening the doors for others to follow. During his career, Gonzalez became the first Hispanic to win back-to-back U.S. singles titles in 1948 and 1949 and lead the U.S. to the Davis Cup title in 1949. He also won doubles titles at the French Championships and Wimbledon in 1949. His 1948 men’s singles title at the U.S. Championships was named top moment in Hispanic tennis history. Two high school tennis players were selected from across the nation. Moya, headed to Colorado State University next year, was awarded with a $2,500 grant to put toward his tennis activities and further academic pursuits.
