Baseball: Maranatha carries West San Gabriel Valley on its back when CIF-SS quarterfinals resume Friday.

CIF-SS PLAYOFFS
FRIDAY’S GAME
QUARTERFINALS
DIVISION 6

Maranatha at Campbell Hall, 3:15 p.m.

MARANATHA 5, HESPERIA 1: Danny Beckwith went the distance and Erik Johnson hit a two-run double in the fifth inning to propel the Maranatha High School baseball team to a 5-1 victory over Hesperia in the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 5 playoffs Tuesday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

PALOMA VALLEY 9, ALHAMBRA 0: For the fifth straight season, the Moors were ousted in Division 2. “We didn’t do any of the things we’ve done that’s made us successful,” Alhambra coach Steve Gewecke said. “It was a hard one to watch, and why we didn’t do any of the things we do well, I don’t know.” Alhambra (23-5) can take solace in that for the sixth straight season the Moors won the Almont League title. “We had a nice season,” Gewecke said. “You can’t let one game define what you’ve done this year. It was sad tonight, but you get to school on time the next day and finish off your academic year on a good note.”

SONORA 4, MONROVIA 0: Sonora scored in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings, and three of those runs came with two outs against the Wildcats (22-4) in Division 4. “We didn’t have many opportunities,” Monrovia co-coach Brad Blackmore said. “If the (Sonora pitcher) wasn’t good or we wasted opportunities I’d have a different feeling, but he was pitching great.”

HERITAGE 3, GABRIELINO 2, 8 INN.: Heritage scored in the sixth on a squeeze play, and what should have been a routine double play to end the eighth resulted in a run and the end of the Eagles’ (17-10) Division5 playoff run.
