Friday’s Scores

Bishop Amat 34, Muir 14 — Zach Shay scores three touchdowns and finishes with 107 yards. Jalen Moore rushes for 128 yards and a TD and Rio Ruiz throws for 145 yards and two touchdowns. Nice numbers for sure, but you get the feeling the offense has opened it up and can do so much more. Still, nice to be 3-0.

Monrovia 34, Arcadia 7 – Nick Bueno put on a show. He completed 11 of 17 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 204 yards on 12 carries with two touchdowns. He scored on runs of 53 and 78 yards and connected twice with Jay Henderson with 20- and 13-yard scores. Monrovia’s new stadium looks gorgeous, and the Wildcats made sure the unveiling of their new stadium wasn’t spoiled by a determined Arcadia team. Taylor Lagace was nearly shut down offensively. He made only three catches for 9 yards. Derrin Jenkins played flawlessly at corner and pestered Lagace all night. Mason Bryant also assisted late in the game. Ellis McCarthy is better than advertised. The 6-foot-5, 290-pound beast hounded Myles Carr all night, forcing the junior quarterback to alter his throws. Carr completed only 12-of-24 passes for 89 yards. He connected on a 28-yard touchdown pass to David Maldonado. But the Apaches wouldn’t be a threat the rest of the game. Lagace made an interception in the end zone, but the Apaches turned it over, giving way for a Christian Blanco score on the ensuing possession. Lagace returned a punt to the Monrovia 42, but the Apaches had to punt on fourth-and-20.

Ahambra 20, Temple City 14 – Alhambra scored 14 points on its first two drives after scoring just 13 points in its first two games combined. Temple City’s power running game appears to be back. Senior Joshua Simangunsong rushed for 135 yards on 20 carries, “a 180 degree difference” from their opening game, Temple City coach Mike McFarland said.

St. Francis 42, Crescenta Valley 14 — Brett Nelson completed 13 of 22 passes for 187 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for another from 7 yards. Travis Talianko connected, but Ian Hamilton was just as impressive even without a TD. He caught six passes for 110 yards.

Rowland 48, Rosemead 14 – For the second straight week, the Raiders jump to a 28-0 lead and actually scored the first two times they touched the ball. Rough night for the Panthers.

San Marino 48, La Salle 6 — The San Marino offense rode with Kwame Do. He rushed for 101 yards in the first quarter alone. It’s pretty obvious the La Salle offense continues to struggle. Do finished with 223 yards on 12 carries, but not all ended well. Do suffered what appears to be a season-ending injury when early prognosis indicated an ACL tear. We’ll know more Monday.

Burbank 44, San Gabriel 36 — Burbank opened with a 37-point lead but almost gave it away in the second half. Ulisies Ochoa ran for four TD’s and caught another one. San Gabriel’s Eric Alvarez was replaced by Andy Guerrero late in the first quarter. Guerrero made the most of his opportunity, passing for 148 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for another.

La Canada 40, Glendale 14 — Daleep Sandhu had 22 carries for 119 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Spartans. Sandhu said the La Canada offensive line is undersized, but that they played big, resulting in five rushing touchdowns.

Cathedral 36, Pasadena 0 — Can we fast forward to the Turkey Tussle?

Gabrielino 43, Keppel 0 — Running back Eddie Moreno ran back two punt returns and had a 62-yard rushing score to lead the Eagles.

Pasadena Poly 51, Marshall 21 — Way to bounce back after losing a close one to Malibu last week.

Bosco Tech 35, Gladstone 28 — Nothing like going on the road and coming home with a victory. The Tigers do it for the second straight week.

Maranatha 66, Santa Maria 21 – Maranatha’s defense shut down Santa Maria in the second half, the lone touchdown coming on a 42-yard interception return. Jeremy Majors had 234 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns total. He had two receiving (60- and 12-yards) and returned two punts for 60- and 72-yards. Sophomore quarterback Andrew Elfers completed 17 of 24 for 287 yards and four touchdowns. This kid is going to be good.

Rio Hondo Prep 44, Kilpatrick 12 — Charles Quintero had 167 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns to lead the Kares.

Grace Brethren 46, Flintridge Prep 20 — Rebels had a tough one on the road.

    GOOD LUCK STANGS!

  • Huckster!!!!!

Muir will lose 56 to nothing! Period! That’s with everyone healthy! I don’t know what it might me since they’re banged up! Oh, well…..I don’t feel sorry for them! I wish Muir “BAD LUCK” and I don’t want any of the children hurt! Just frighten and confused for the Pacific League and then no playoffs!!!!!

  • Realist

    Huckster-

Atleast Muir has the balls to play Bishop Amat. The the difference in the tussel every year. Muir plays power houses in pre season. So when they play Pasadena, its like playing La Salle. You cant talk if your team is garbage (Pasadena). Good luck stangs. We are all rooting for you.

  • MoneyTalks

    Realist,

That was real talk right there, plain and simple, as in 2 + 2 = 4. You don’t beat around the bush, hence Realist!

  • Huckster!!!!!

    Realist-

At least Muir has the balls to play Bishop Amat. Thats the difference in the Tussel every year. Muir plays power houses in pre season. So when they play Pasadena, its like playing La Salle. ???????????
1st of all you play Power Houses to see where your team is at and if I can remember, every powerhouse Muir has played in the last couple of years has gotten them blown out! Ok, Charter Oaks last year, but everybody else couldnt keep their hands off yawls throats!

2nd of all, if your comparing us to La Salle then the Stangs must be San Gabriel, because you guys havent been beating us by no outstanding scores!

Bottom line is you guys need to stick around here and take 4th in the Pacific this year! Muir is a HAS BEEN PROGRAM! 12% of 50 = 6! Did you get that?

  • the critic

huckster u sound like a big hater and i think i know u let me think yo son went to pasadena and now attends p.c.c but he’s awesome but your blogs are ridiculous dude get a life and stop hating on kids why would u want muir to be frighten for league are u saying that is the only way your team can beat them……smh dont worry they wont be frighten and of course the team that your going for in league will lose again to muir…

  • Nothing but a stang thang

    Critic,

U talkin about trumpet? Come on now brotha,Trump use to step out of bounds to avoid contact, plus he was 5 feet with cheats on.

  • ActionsTalk

    AHA! Keepin’ it real..

  • ActionsTalk

Listen, I understand supporting a team and having faith in a team. But it’s also not fair to the kids to place unwarranted expectations on them. Let them set their own goals and expectations and just have faith that they can do their best.

Unfortunately for most WSGV teams, their bests aren’t up to the standards of programs from other areas for whatever reason(s). I don’t mean to be a hater just to be a hater. It’s just coming from years on here hearing people yap about this team is going to do this or that, dada should compete for divisional championships. People say these things like they just happen.. THEY DON’T JUST HAPPEN. You have to go out and earn them.

  • longtimefan

Maranatha has another decisive win. 56 to 21.

  • viking fan

C’mon, can’t we get on here and discuss the games without putting down people’s kids, especially by name?

  • Tom S

    Nice win tonight Maranatha.
Miguel, keep going against them. Seems to work

  • Moneytalks

    Monrovia played excellent ball. Period.

  • Anonymous

    Realist, what happened now?

  • John Wayne

I didn’t even read the picks that Miguel made this week. Did he really pick Maranatha to lose again? If that was the case then WOW! Still disrespecting!
How many did he get right this week?

  • John Wayne

Hey Monrovia… GREAT JOB tonight! Nick you are doing what your suppose to do, LEADING a team by example! Nice job

  • Anonymous

Stangfan kicked Miguels arse. He picked Maranatha and went 17-0 tonight. Don’t pick against the Minutemen!

  • Miguel Melendez

    I went 14-3.

John Wayne: To say I disrespect Maranatha is ludicrous and laughable.

  • Just Me

How about the quarterbacks from Maranatha? Matt Schilz starting as a redshirt freshman at Bowling Green, Cody Keith signed at East Carolina, and now the sophomore Andrew Elfers who will end up?

  • Horton not the answer- right Huckster?

    La Canada: 40
    Glendale: 14

    Cathedral: 22
    Glendale: 10

    Cathedral: 36
    PHS: 0

La Canada and Glendale can both beat PHS. The Bulldogs are a bad team and might come in 8th place in the Pacific League.

  • FB Einstein

Good game for the Rams tonight. I know they lost but they looked much better than they did last week. Get better each week and hope to be hitting on all cylinders by league.

Sorry to hear about Kwame Do. He was headed for a great season. Looking forward to see how SM does against Rosemead next week.

Tough start for San Gabriel. Hard to coach a system in high school that is so dependent on having a great QB.

    Is Blair good this year?
Will TC get it together in time?
    South Pass looks good.
LaCanada will be there in the end.
What does the loss of Do mean at SM mean?
    Monrovia is just plain scary.

  • big play

if someone finds a way to tackle, mtown can’t rely on the big play in the playoffs

  • John Wayne

    Miguel,
I guess I’m not the only one that realizes the disrespect (yes, a spade is a spade). Anyway, if you are to pick the Minutemen losing, then next week will be a serious CHALLENGE. Salesian they are big, tough, and don’t back down. I still say that Maranatha will beat them.

  • New York

Great scheme on Lagace. Tremendous pressure on Carr, especially the adjustment to contain, because he was very effective once outside the pocket.

Monrovia’s offensive line did a great job. Henderson had two scores but his best catch was a stretched out, one-handed grab. I’m not sure how Nick does what he does with his legs, but it sure is fun to watch!

The game was close until Arcadia got tired, and then it got very one-sided.

This was a great first game in the new stadium. Nice meeting you, Miguel. Thanks for the game coverage.

  • stangs03

hahahah! the feeling Huckster has after he sees the scores of every HS game has to be priceless!!! HS is the little engine that couldnt! why even suit up? save yourselves the embarrassment bulldog fans… maybe u guys should try flag football, or badminton or something…

wish my stangs could pulled off the win last nite, but hey we’ll take our lumps and get ready for league. lookin the burbank schools are gonna be the teams to beat.

enjoy football this weekend fellas! will holla!

Miguel… Azul tonite bruh! Drinks on me…

  • Observantcat

This was kind of like the breaking out party that Monrovia has been awaiting for this season. We are still in the hunt for a true backfield, but for what Nick for brings to the table I dont see the rush. The second half was all Monrovia and Nick sat back confidently in the pocket and found recievers. I was particulary impressed from the play of the underclassmen ie. George Frazier, Anthony Craft & Mason Bryant and having a great defensive game in stopping the Arcadia passing attack. Derrin Jenkins was spectacular holding Taylor Legace to just 9 yrds. This game will help Arcadia more than it should Monrovia this season they will watch the film and really get to know their weaknesses. The Monrovia Defense was steller as I thought it would be with Derrick Johnson and Ellis McCarthy as well as John Adams and Dean Bisterfeldt tossing around the Apache running backs as though they were manigans. I feel that Arcadia will demolish teams that dont have a great pass defense or teams with weak secondary’s. The Arcadia defense had their moments, but could not last the entire game. This could be a problem down the stretch.
Well we need to take care of unfinished business against our new Div. rivals San Dimas. This one will be very interesting. I have Monrovia by 14

  • Tom S

    John W:
Lay off Miguel, hes got a lot going on then worry about little MHS. Hes given us support in the past and if this young team keeps playing like it has the last couple of games well get his attention. The Salesian game this week will be a test but I remember in the 06-07 season when we went down there for the 2nd round playoff game we were big underdogs. Even Freddy didnt have us winning but we put the hurt on Salesian with a 52-6 win. If youre going to the game I will say its a bit of a hostile environment. They put the visiting crowd down at one end of the field around the 20 yard marker. You sit high right over the out of bounds and its not easy viewing the game.
Oh, parking sucks, get there early and be prepared to pay

  • I speak the Truth

you know it’s football season – the Maranatha fans are in full whining mode. Should Miguel have picked the Minutemen to win?…of course, Santa Maria is a pretty bad team. But Maranatha fans come in here every year and act like their school is the only school that counts.

“Miguel, you didn’t cover us enough” “Miguel, you didn’t pick us”. Sheesh, get over your self absorption and realize that there our other schools in this world. It really reflects badly on the school.

  • Anonymous

Maranatha doesnt play anyone. You would get stomped if you played Mtown, Muir, St. Francis…etc. You guys need to sit-down, shut-up and let the adults talk.

  • Witness

    Maranatha Faithful,

This is not the 2006-2007 Salesian team MHS will be facing. These guys are big, physical and fast on both sides of the ball. In fact, their team is better than last year’s team that made it to the CIF Semi-finals. A number of Division 1 commitments and prospects will make it difficult for Maranatha to pull out the “W”.

  • The Stang Fan

The game went exactly how I thought it would. The Stangs were a COMPLETELY undermanned team. If they were healthy it would have been closer, but Amat would still win. There were 23-24 players suited-up, and that was before the ambulance picked up two more linemen and the starting WR #7 never came back in the game after his injury in the 1st quarter.

I’ve never seen a Muir team this decimated by injuries. This is the kind of situation bye-weeks were created for. Forget licking their wounds, they’ve got to give their wounds open-mouthed, sloppy, tongue kisses.

Anyhow, league is now the focus. If the horses can recover well in their stables over the next couple of weeks, they can be unleashed on the Pacific league. This team has enough talent to do well in league and make noise in the playoffs.

    Get healthy fellas and….

    LET’S GO STANGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Goldenarm

this blog should be on fire!

There is SO much goin on.

    Stang Fan,
you see aram’s piece about Muir’s low attendance, non-supporting fan base? Was wondering what you thought.

    La Canada
look out for the spartans. if you recall when yoder got the job- his came right out and said “we will be running a TC offense with a TC mindset”. He knew it would work – unfortunately our wise administration at TC believed otherwise, and pushed out the dinosuars for another direction.
Sandhu is hammering behind a determined O-line and LC is punishing some people with straight forward smart football.
    San Marino
Yes, there are better than you think. Losing Kwame is huge, because that offense needs quickness in the RB position – who is next in line? I don’t know. Look who Mooney has on his staff – incredible experience and talent.
Monrovia – Bueno 200 plus yards…..somebody predicted this back in May. Cats have not even approached 100% yet.
Temple City – they are workin hard and fighting for whatever they can get. A leaderless, unpushed offseason is hard to overcome. It was not the classic sweatfest, teams in the weight room, psycho agilities so standard in the Backus era. Many other factors. Tim Sanderson is giving 200% – Tim, save some for league my man. Tough horn locking game with the Mead – time to eat some moldy chorizo and get those huevos swollen! Hit somebody!
    Go Rams!

  • Miguel Melendez

Goldenarm: I agree, this blog should be on fire. To have only 33 comments as of Saturday, 7:22 p.m. is depressing. We had info up Friday night on just about every game. I, too, have been disappointed with the Muir following. Low turnout on the road AND at home.

Stangs03: I was going there tonight already!

  • Anonymous

Well this may give you something to smile about Miguel. Monrovia bloggers will remain faithful til the end and have a crowd following that represents our issues well home and away. At the Glendora game we carried a crowd of 1,100+ fans to Citrus College and our Friday attendance against Arcadia was 3,500. We wil always represent our school in a positive way both on and off the field and in your blogs. This year a lot of west valley teams dont seem to have it in them to support their teams. Monrovia has one of the best community support systems available to all of its residents and that is why there is always so much support in whatever the city decides to do. By the way our freshman game score was Monrovia 50- Arcadia 26 those youngsters have a whole lot to look forward to with this new stadium and football environment. Dont worry this blog will get louder as the season progresses. Muir vs. Arcadia – Monrovia vs. San Dimas etc.

  • Anonymous

Id just like to point something out. To someone not extremely knowledgeable in the history of sgv football as myself, it appears as if it is a wide belief that San Gabriel Valley schools could not compete with those schools to the east. My only hope is that over time, schools like Monrovia and Muir along with other schools will remain competitive with schools in the East San Gabriel Valley and Inland Empires. I feel like it is time that local schools strengthen their programs and schedules. There is a reason the Tribune blog has three times as many posts on saturdays and i believe that has a large part to do with the community support for schools in this area. Fans from Temple City, Monrovia, Arcadia, Rosemead, etc., Its time to show these kids who play for their cities that their cities are behind them rooting for them.

  • Classic

Anon……we MHS fans we are a bit much I admit but at least we post.

Both Mig and Goldenarm admit that the blog is dead, I don’t care much…I like all the sports and while I love football the bias press bugs me, I’m still here though because I support the school.

But Anon. You are right, MHS will lose soon and would lose to Muir and bigger schools, but at least the posters are proud of their team win or lose.

How many teams or schools have that? How many schools have parents that show up and get passionate over a team that has only 300 or so boys at a school? (I know Rio does but you get my point)

Last year we were down a league and CIF Div. and we received grief, now we went up both and still get grief.

For crying out loud, we’re playing La Canada (they look VERY GOOD) and you don’t hear us crying?

Let’s focus on the positive, enjoy the fall and a good season.

    GO MHS!

  • HOT ROD

    A few points -

    Bishop Amat a Powerhouse?
Really… they had a surprising good season last year, the first in a LONG time.

Muir travels small crowd to Amat – That same small crowd is the amount they have for their home games too.

Pasadena Football struggles – Yes they do, and I hate to think of damage done to unlucky teams if they catch fire. They have speed and its BURNS! BTW, the grandstands were overflowing with a sell out crowd at a game PHS didnt stand much of a chance in. What a great fanbase!

  • Witness

    Anonymous September 18, 2010 4:50 PM ,

Please keep things in perspective. The CIF has differnt divisions for a reason…..When smaller schools play up wins become a little tougher to come by…M-Town would lose to Glendora, Muir would lose to Amat, and if St Francis played Mission Viejo the result would probably not be any different.

Try to keep things in context otherwise you lose credibility.

  • football man

Yes this is not the same Salesian Team Maranatha will face is because Salesian has no ethics and let’s anybody in to play. They are letting all those D1 guys inplaying in a small school Divison 13. I guarantee you most of their players could not cut the grades at Maranatha or other school’s in D13.

  • The Pacific league!

I think Cif should assign Divisions every 2-3 years. Good teams are good teams, all this upper division BS needs to stop. You can’t say just because a team is in a upper division they are good, better or would win a game. Its really hard to say, some upper division schools are good because they have a program, coach and system. Some are good because they have a limitless talent pool. From decade to decade powerhouses change. Just like Charter Oak went up after winning two titles, some teams should be sent down. For example Glendale and hoover, should be moved down. If upper division teams do win, they are supposed to right? Teams still have to play the game. If that premise stands true then what happen friday shouldn’t have happened. The Rio Hondo is a weak league today, with teams like blair and temple city stinking it up.But hey its lower division. The Pacific Being a upper division league in the wsgv, teams should be playing better. The top 3 teams in Muir, Burbank and Burroughs are playing well…But the rest is no good. Depending on how they play out the rest of preseason will tell the tail of the pacific league. They should think about adding Monrovia to the league. After all every year Monrovia could finish first thru third place in Football, first thru 3rd in Baseball, and Basketball they would not place in league. But Monrovia would be a better replacement for hoover and glendale. It works out for the pacific league and Monrovia. Monrovia needs to be tested every year in league. They need that in order to have a shot at a title. If you play weak teams all year, you can’t handle adverstity and will choke, as monrovia has for decades. Lets take a look at the Pacific league this year.

Muir is good, they always are going to have a team. They have lots of talent over there. I give them major props for going into Bishop. That’s the Muir spirit. but they are not the muir of the 80′s and 90′s. Those Muir teams would go to Bishop and have a track meet and put up 40. If Monrovia and Muir played, there would not be any blowouts and Monrovia could win. I mean the pacific league is getting beat by everyone these days. Muir is the only team in that league. La Canada just beat the brakes off Glendale, South Pasadena beat Hoover. Monrovia just blasted Arcadia, Pasadena is terrible and just got shut out. South Pasadena beat and held San Gabriel to 9pts, Muir gave up 12pt, and Burbank got into a barn burning shoot out with San Gabriel giving up 36 pts. Burroughs may be decent, but we will have to see how they do against the rest of the league. CV lost to St Francis, but how good are they? They like to beat up on Lower division WSGV Teams then lose in the playoffs!Really they had the services of a Pasadena Kid Diedrich Riley who should have been at Muir! lol. St Francis gave up four TD’s to Arcadia, which Monrovia would have shut out if they did not play the back ups. San Marino Just destroyed la Salle, and PHS plays them next. We will see what happens. The Pacific league traditionally has been the toughest league in the WSGV, but not any more. This year its shapping up to be the worst its ever been year to date. This sucks for Muir, BC They have a shot to go deep in the playoffs, but they are going to get a horrible draw in the playoffs bc of how weak thier league is playing this year. They literally will have to put up 40 pts on every one in league and beat Burbank. If their lower division foes are beating up on the bottom to mid class of the Pacific, that does not look good. Especially if Muir or Burbank struggles with anyone in league. Good luck Muir…

  • Aaron

I think things at Muir may be a tad different than at Pasadena. I watched Muir at the Wolfpack Challenge in Claremont…there were a bunch of schools that traveled a good bit more distance than Muir. However Muir was the only team that came on a school bus, everyone else has cars. I told my father the same observation and he said that I had to think about the area that is North Pasadena.

So as far as Muir’s following…it has a lot to do with economics.

  • StangScout

After going to see Bishop Amat last weekend play a sub-par Dominguez team and win in the fashion they did, I expected a lot more out of our Stangs in this weeks performance even with all of the injury’s. I then attended the Arcadia versus Monrovia game on Friday and what I saw was a team I would put my money on in a Bishop Amat/Monrovia showdown. The Monrovia Defense was nails and watching them walk through the Arcadia line as though they were transparent made me wonder just how good are these guys. I believe if not for some questionable offensive play calling Monrovia could have put up 60 points or better on a decent Arcadia team. What I saw at Bishop was that they lack speed on offense and the line was not the line of the old Amat teams. I thought the Stangs would go in there and take advantage of the weight and skill position advantages that Amat would give them but they gave into Bishop Amats game right from the start. After taking a close look at Arcadia I would say that if they make some quick adjustments on their offensive strategies and not depend so much on the Carr to Legace connection they could give some of their Pacific league opponents a run for their money. As I was checking my coveritlive, it looked like the stangs were hanging in there pretty good with Amat until I went to reload my page and noticed a major undoing in the 3rd quarter. We will get better and I do believe that we will be challenged a lot more than we would like to be by both Burbank schools, But we will prevail in the end. Good luck to all of the area teams lets bring some pride back to the West.

  • Hmm

If Monrovia won a title or two at their current division, perhaps moving them to the Pacific Leauge would prove to be a good idea?

  • Realistic

    Hey Realist:

    Frosh 50 – 26
    JV 22 – 18
    Varsity 34 – 7

  • Hey Hmm

Why would that matter? It’s not like anyone in the Pacific has won their division lately. Monrovia would run all over the Pacific this year as well. And don’t kid yourself.

  • anonymous

    theREALdeal,

Good thing Bueno is not a real quarterback or they would have really kicked Arcadia’s tail.

Derrin Jenkins(Kryptonite) sure did a number on Lagace(superman). hahahaha!!!

    Myles Carr = OVERRATED!!!

  • hahaha

What does that say about the Apaches when they let an under-sized baseball player total 400+ yards and account for 4 TDs on their defense?!

  • CatsFan

Where was the vaunted Carr to Lagace connection???

  • Anonymous

    @Hmm,

Title or not, what good does having Hoover or Glendale in That league. Really. Those two games alone are cake walks. Those two schools Really hurt that league. I would take a titless Monrovia over those two schools anyday. They would lose to anyone in the Rio hondo Except Blair. Temple city has had some bad years lately, but historically, they would still beat Hoover and Glendale. It’s Muirs lose. All my Muir peeps always complain about playoff seeding. That league is what’s causing that.

  • Elephant

Arcadia is in big trouble this year. If lucky we could end up 4-6. The coaches need to break up that lovefest between no.8 and no.28. That connection is too easy for any DC with half a brain to defend. “Man him up with help over the top” it’s no secret. And no more jump ball passes! He’s not going to out jump everyone! Monrovia’s no.4 broke up a jump ball pass to him!(that boy can jump) Multiple times other receivers were open and the ball was still forced to no.28. As much smack talking as he did on the field I was hoping he would back it up. And as mentioned before, no.8 still has a lot to learn specially when dealing against a fast and athletic defense. Coaches need to trust no.3 and get him the ball more in the open with a toss or a screen. It was made obvious this Friday that we’re not going to be running the ball down anyone’s throats, specially up the middle. Overall, our line is undersized and the team as a whole lacks speed and there’s no real leaders on the team. Establish the run game to open up the passing game. Go back to the I formation with either no.20 or no.23 at fullback and plow for 3 or 4 yards. This would at least kill the clock and keep our slow defense off the field. And can somebody please tell our defense that passing league is over and that they actually have to start tackling. And don’t any other Arcadia fan say that it would have been different if no.9 played, cause it wouldn’t have made a difference. Monrovia whooped us straight up.

  • tcchamps

Looks like it’s going to be a down year in football.

  • Anonymous

Well Apache Joe, What did you think of the comparison of Ellis McCarthy and your former player Todd Golper?.. I think that this kid is living up to his billing and he still has another year to go. If he isn’t D1 starting materiala then I cant see anyone else going D1 bcs from this area at his position.

  • Apache Alum

It was fun coming down to Monrovia and watching the opening of the new stadium, I also got a chance to see our apache freshman squad, they looked pretty competitive out there. Big question is who on that Monrovia squad was #22? that kid is a beast of a running back. If he’s only a freshman I wonder what he is going to be as a Jr. or Sr. This kid could have probably started on Arcadia’s varsity this season and made a difference. Good luck Cats, you guys really have it going on.

Monrovia fans, get off your high horse. You won a game that was close until midway through the 4th. Try winning a CIF title, then you can talk. Choke Choke. Until then, I suggest stop running your mouths.

  • Red Leader

Raging Waters. What high horse? We’re just excited about our team. YOU need to stop running your mouth and instead say something of value.

  • Anonymous

    @ Raging Waters

No one is on a high horse. At least Monrovia fans are showing support for their team. We could use more of that for other local teams, I think anyone would agree with that.

  • Anonymous

    football man,

The last time I checked all kids going to college, irregrdless of their Division I prospect status, had to have relatively decent ACT/SAT scores and GPA’s to gain entrance. Since 1958, the folks at Salesian have done a wonderful job at “taking a chance” on “inner city” kids who may not have fit the same mold as kids who test into and attend fine academic institution like Poly, Chadwick, Webb, and Flintridge Prep. If taking a chance on young men who may not be taking Physics and Trigonometry their freshman year is unethical, then Salesian is damn guilty of it!

  • Spartans 09

With yoder as head coach LC will do some damage. He is a very firm believer in the weight room and putting in work while your in there. LC will enjoy some long years of football prosperity while he is there. Congratulations to coach yoder and the spartans 2-0 is a good start. This week the falcons will be a good test.

The rest of the rio hondo is looking strong as well. I’m excited to see how league will play out this year.

  • Goldenarm

    Apache Alum,

I have no idea who the M-town freshman # 22 is, but I do know your question is the same one I asked for 4 straight years – seeing another amazing, high potential, heavy on God given talent kid, enter into the Monrovia High School football program.
    Who is that kid?
Being a Temple City Ram supporter, the only counter to the obvious mismatch in raw talent, was to play disciplined and fundamental straight ahead football, make less mistakes than your opponent, and be conditioned physically and mentally enough to complete 4 quarters of football.
Only a confused football mind would consider a run and shoot contest with the Wildcats, unless you had shutdown team defensive speed, which Temple City has never had.
The talent pool shows no sign of drying up in Monrovia. The attraction of football elsewhere still exists, but before boarding that train, kids now see reasons to stay with the home grass. It is up to others in the RHL to raise their game and challenge Monrovia…which La Canada and San Marino and maybe even South Pasadena are looking better able to do this year. Even with the 5 missing starters, it may not have been TC’s year to challenge the Wildcats. But this all shows promise for the quality of football in the RHL, and ups our chances of competing in post season Mid Valley play.

  • HS Sports Fan

To Sports Pasadena Area sports fans. Muir has between 1000-1100 students while PHS has between 2800-3000 yet year after year Muir has produced a better product on the field. Kudos to Coach Howard (for coaching) and Muir Administration (supporting Howard) with a falling enrollment and kids more interested in Futbol vs Football. I am proud of the Mighty Mustangs. The question is what is happening at PHS? Almost three times as many kids as Muir and a wealth of talent but they can’t field a competitive team! HS football is 90% coaching. And if you doubt that look what Brownfield was able to do at Muir. No excuses for bad programs. The buck stops at the coach, period! Look at any good program in the area and they are coach strong. It is time we wake up and tell it like it is!!! Comments welcomed.

  • Goldenarm

    I agree on the coaching.
Muir’s weakness this year and in many seasons past is sheer numbers of bodies…depth in general. This is most often evident on the line, where two injuries can be enough to decimate the trenches.
Last season against Venice the Stangs had 7 or 8 kids in street clothes, that was nearly 1/3 of their roster.
If Howard were able to average 10 more kids on the roster each year…what a difference it could make.

  • sstress

I have to agree that ultimately it is the coachs responsibility to produce a good football program. However, I believe strong parent support is needed also and when the team is not doing well parent and community support tends to decline as well. I hear what the Monrovia community is saying and that is a given. They have one school for the city while Pasadena has four public schools with four football programs. The community support is divided. I personally support Blair as my son is on the team, however I also root, and cheer and when it is possible attend Muir or PHS game to support Pasadena. Good Luck to all the Pasadena teams and thanks for all the updates and information on the games. I really enjoy reading the blog regarding the other team in SGV.

  • Red Leader

Still no sign of Realist? How about his buddies, Realist 1.0 and 2.0? They’re probably still icing their bruises from when that small baseball player from Monrovia ran all over them.

  • Huckster!!!!!!!!

    HS Sports Fan,

You can blame the head football coach, because hes the first face you see to blame! Pasadena High School has deeper issues than the eye can see.The first part is the Administration is terrible when it comes to sports! Period! Its like theyre out to get the student athletes on the East side of town and I mean they do not discriminate either! All the head coaches of the respected varsity teams have different agendas and not a BULLDOG AGENDA! Tony Brooks is the athletics director and he is the worst pieces of crap ever chosen for a position, which requires strong leadership! The man loses important legal documents in regards to the children and CIF issues. Oh and let me get this right, just the football teams documents! I wish I was lying, but Tony Brooks and head basketball coach Tucker are trying to sabotage the football program! They even stole all the money from the 2009 football snack stands revenue! They wont let the kids play two sports and its all kinds of under hand things going on over there that are flat out embarrassing! Assistant Principal Mike Bell is a good man, but he plays Scared Chicken Politics meaning the man doesnt want to make crucial decisions! The sad part about all of this is that PHS is considered a white school, but they got a lot of African American Men in head positions and folks theyre just not cutting it! Just know its a lot of Black on Black crime going on over there and that contributes to the losing more than anything! I wish someone would respond, so I can spill all the beans!

  • Hal Lamaster

    To Anonymous,
Hoover and Glendale cannot control what league they are in. I’m sure there are plenty of schools with losing records that wish they could move to an easier league.

It’s been many seasons since either Glendale school was a factor in a league title chase.

And true, Hoover and Glendale don’t help add to the “strength” of Pacific League in football but the addition of Burbank and Burroughs didn’t hurt. The top 6 teams in the Pacific League are still competitive with their counterparts in the Rio Hondo, Almont and some other leagues in most years.

  • HS Sports Fan

Huckster!!! Wow, it would be difficult to comment for a lot of reasons. My comments supported both the Administration and Coach at Muir! Let me go further to say Coaches and Prin. Orange is all for the kids.

It takes a village to raise a child and in Pasadena it must take a City. As I have stated in prior posts we all lose when the kids aren’t offered the best. A lot will be placed on the line this weekend when PHS faces LaSalle. Should LS (750 students) prevail over PHS (2800+) then PHS has “very” serious problems. No excuses about a young inexperienced team. My pick LaSalle to win!

  • A Real Bulldog

Huck you’ve been nothing but a cancer and an embarrassment to PHS for a long time. I’m tired of it. Someone told me about this blogging stuff and I blew it off but then I heard what you said about Coach Tuck and Brooks. I did not believe it at first until but came on here to see and I was shocked. But when it comes to you I know I should never be shocked. You are loud, obnoxious, immature and your act is beyond tired. Coach Tuck and Coach Brooks are good stand up men. Unlike you! They have developed a program that brings respect and pride to our school. Unlike you! I am proud to say that these men represent PHS. Unlike you! And they would never do shady things to get money. UNLIKE YOU! Please, please, please, please, stay away from our school. Our boys do not need your type of support. You talk about how much you hate Muir but you act just like their kind! I can officially say you are dead to us.

  • Huckster!!!!!!!

    A Real Bulldog?

Like most cowards! They hide when the $hit starts coming out and the smell is non other than them selves! Okay, where do I start? I might be all those things you said, but the facts I stated are TRUE! Anybody that backs Coach Tuck or Brooks is flat out not for PHS or the kids! You cant be! What has Tuck done for anyone at PHS? Seriously! You know, I know the inside business, so please tell everyone on this blog! The man is out to meet his own selfish agendas at the expense of the children! What is a stand up MAN by your definition? Does it mean, working at a school for 17 years and not getting one person in college? Convincing the parents of a young man that had brain surgery come back to early to assure another winning season? Not letting young men explore the possibilities that there may be other opportunities to attend college? I can go on and on, but if its about winning and only winning then the AD at PHS need to stop sabotaging the football program! The man never has any of the paper work done when a kid is coming to play football! Example, Chris Hollis a player that was up to have a year back of HS for academic and personal reasons was supposed to be playing at PHS this year, but Tony Brooks never got his paper work into CIF so he couldnt play for our school (PHS)! He is currently playing football at North Hollywood! I guess they got some white man in charge and the paper work got done! When a basketball player comes in to the PHS program there is never any trouble that the player plays. Why? Brooks is a former Basketball player! Tuck won a title, but no kids he got into college! Coach Loose never won a title and 5 kids with scholarships! Coach Mills never won a title and got 3 kids to college! Im more of a MAN than you and them! Im willing to sit and have a heart to heart discussion too!

  • Huckster!!!!!!!

Oh, for the record! No one could ever take my BULLDOG PASS away! I understand how you feel, because I want to take Tony Brooks African-American, Black, Brotha, Bro and so on Card away! I do realize that its not for me to take!!!!

  • A Real Bulldog

Are you that insane? What about Joe Henson at SJSU, Keion Bell at Pepperdine, Kyle Austin at USC/UCR, Trevon Harmon at Cleveland State, and Artis Gant at LBSU/CSULA. Not to mention the CIF ring and a whole bunch of wins that brings pride to the campus and community. If it wasn’t for the basketball team we would be known as a sorry football school. I want the football team to be awesome too! I just don’t know why a school so big like us loses to a sorry small school like Muir every single year! That is a shame! It probably has to do with the fact that there have been people like you around the program and on the staff! I’m proud of the brothas in powerful positions at a school like PHS why are you trying to bring them down? Those are some real men. Like I said before, UNLIKE you! And you have the nerve to cal someone else selfish when all you do is try and make the football program all about Huck and not the kids! If we are a reflection of you we will never win games! Like I said please, please, please, please stay away from our school and kids!

  • Philly B.

Congrats to the cats for taking care of the apaches in their new stadium!!! Every year we hear about how weak the rio hondo league is and blah blah blah….but now it seems that the pacific league could be weaker than the rio hondo…I mean Glendale and Hoover have always been inferior to teams of the WSGV…But There is no reason PHS should be atop of the pacific along with muir. I hope Muir will get healthy before league play….

Im glad the rio hondo is “looking” a bit more competitve than recent years…but San Marino would come into league and be 5-0, and really didnt do that much damage in league-play…So I dont wanna jump on the band-wagon quite yet on La Canada, and South Pas…And with the big lost at San Marino with Do…I really dont know how good their gonna be….

Lets go cats this friday, payback to what them Saints took from us….

  • Anonymous

Slow down on the RHL being better than the Pacific talk. 75% of the wins are against the Glendale schools.

The RHL #1 team [Monrovia] beat the Pacific #6 team [Arcadia]
The RHL #5 team [South Pas] beat the Pacific #7 team [Hoover]
The RHL #3 team [La Canada] beat the Pacific #8 team [Glendale]
The RHL #5 team [South Pas] beat the Pacific #8 team [Glendale]

  • Anonymous

Overall, it was an embarrassing performance by Arcadia. Not tackling on defense, not keeping any contain on the quarterback, running a repetitive and predictable offense, and not competing. Apache teams of old would be disgraced.

  • Huckster!!!!!!

Save the insane! I’ve heard it with my own ears from each one of those kids, except maybe Keion Bell that Tuck or Broooks never help them get to college! That’s from his basketball players!!!!

The “NERVE” of you! Trying to state, I would bring a Brotha down and its Tony Brooks that is in a powerful position, but only displays incompetence! There are all kinds of evidence showing the man is in over his head with other sporting programs either mangled or just not attended to. The girls soccer team, the girls volleyball, the softball team and the the boy & girls Track teams. The track team didn’t have a coach until mid to late January and the season started in February! PHS and Muir knew they didn’t have a track coach in 2009, but Muir hires Randy Horton (PHS’s Head Football Coach) in September and PHS asked, Randy to be the coach in the beginning of January! So you mean to tell me that I’m putting the “BLACK MAN DOWN”? To think your “a REAL BULLDOG” is “INSANE”! Then you say, stay away from “OUR” school? I’m laughing so hard right now!!! I’m starting to think this is “Tuck or Brooks” because I sense “FEAR”!

  • Hal Lamaster

“The RHL #5 team [South Pas] beat the Pacific #8 team [Glendale]”

Not yet they haven’t. They play on Friday. Last year South Pas was Glendale’s only win, I think.

  • Hal Lamaster

I was surprised by the Monrovia/Arcadia score. I expected a much closer game. Credit Monrovia for getting things turned around.

This week’s Pasadena vs. La Salle game will be big for East Pasadena bragging right. The schools are on the same street for goodness sakes.

A La Salle win over the Bulldogs would have been unthinkable just a few short years ago.

I expect PHS to pick up their first win and gain some momentum heading into the league opener with Arcadia.

  • A Real Bulldog

If you think Coach Tuck didn’t help those boys get to college than you’re crazier than I thought. I do know one person who didn’t get help from his coach to land a scholarship. Armon Binns! We all know how he got to Cincinnati! And it had nothing to do with the football coaches! And, there are only 12-15 players on a basketball team, yet there are 35-40 players on a football team. And your bragging that Coach Mills got only three kids scholarships in four years? That’s 0.75 players a year! At a big school like PHS for Christ’s sake! Big friggin deal! You keep blasting these strong brothas at PHS who actually do something from the school when all you do is drink a lot of alcohol and refuse to close that big, fat, foul mouth of yours. There isn’t enough chemotherapy in the world to get rid of a debilitating cancer such as you Huck! You are a poor excuse of a man!

  • Anon

Huck and Bulldog: Enough! There’s a lot of blame to go around on the eastside. Color of the Adminstration doesn’t matter. There is incompetence and quality in any race. It might be more acceptable to enter others into the dialouge about what is needed.
