PrepXtra: Monrovia leads preseason football rankings

1. MONROVIA
Strengths: Nick Bueno's return would be enough for any team to feel confident about its offense, but what makes the Wildcats dangerous is the depth at running back, starting with senior Derrick Johnson. The offensive line has added size, and a good core on defense also returns. The Wildcats have a chance to prove they're the team to beat with a tough nonleague schedule that includes Mid-Valley Division champion San Dimas.
Obstacles: Experience may be an issue -- the offensive line returns only two starters (Dean Bisterfeldt and Ellis McCarthy).
Outlook: With Bueno virtually directing the offense, don't expect Monrovia to skip a beat offensively. If the newcomers adapt well, the Wildcats could be tougher to beat.

2. ST. FRANCIS
Strengths: A stout offensive line is anchored by Patrick Carroll. The 6-foot-4 lineman had a good summer, getting the attention of colleges and quickly becoming a coveted recruit. The receiving core and secondary return, solidified by Travis Talianko, Ryan Jenkins and Ian Hamilton.
Obstacles: The Golden Knights have a talented but unproven quarterback in Brett Nelson. The 6-foot-3 senior was a transfer from Loyola who didn't play there and was a backup last season. Who replaces Dietrich Riley, now at UCLA, also may be an issue.
Outlook: Nelson has the protection any quarterback would want. If he continues to develop and his talents come to fruition, then St. Francis definitely will surprise teams.

3. MUIR
Strengths: This year's team returns 17 players, 10 of whom started last year. They're a year older after playing valuable minutes last year. Experience on the line, anchored by Danny Huerta and Cameron Palmer, will be key. Running back Kevon Seymour and wide receiver Karl Holmes appear ready to shoulder the responsibility of producing on offense.
Obstacles: Replacing Jarron Williams will be no easy task; Williams played virtually every position and had poise. Jeff Davis, a senior, appears to be the front-runner to take over at quarterback, but lacks valuable minutes.
Outlook: A rebuilding year was expected last year with such a young team. A year older and wiser, Muir expects to improve on a fourth-place finish in the Pacific League and get past the first round of the Southeast Division playoffs.

4. SAN MARINO
Strengths: Mike Mooney makes a grand return to the head coaching ranks. His return alone is a big boost to the Titans. Mooney brings with him a proven staff that includes longtime assistant Tim Loya, who will be offensive coordinator. Kawame Do, a junior, should help provide a seamless transition at running back.
Obstacles: There's a three-player battle at quarterback. Regardless of who wins the spot, they'll still be unproven and will have to adapt to varsity speed.
Outlook: Bet the house anytime Mooney is in the mix.

5. ROSEMEAD
Strengths: Rosemead coach Matt Koffler takes pride in the Panthers' ability to execute the run well. It's a reason why you can expect Rosemead's run production to improve this season, and no one's better at protecting the ball than senior Matt Fregoso, who was a bright spot in the Panthers' 42-20 loss to San Marino in a rare first-round playoff loss. Matt Macias also returns at quarterback, along with seven starters on defense and four of five starters from last year's offensive line.
Obstacles: The Panthers have a tough road for a Mission Valley League crown, competing against the likes of Arroyo, which has bolstered its roster throughout.
Outlook: Rosemead will have an old-school feel with a determined rushing attack. Koffler seems adamant about improving ground production, which may translate to a deeper playoff run this season.

6. ARCADIA
Strengths: Taylor Lagace leads a long list of juniors who are expected to produce after earning starting roles as sophomores. Lagace, a 6-foot-2 wide receiver, caught 74 passes for 895 yards and 12 touchdowns. Rodney Arnett rushed for 670 yards and three touchdowns. Myles Carr was thrust into the starting role at quarterback after Garrett Tuck suffered a shoulder injury halfway through the season. He passed for 859 yards and eight touchdowns.
Obstacles: Tuck was a proven leader on the field. His presence will be missed. The expectations are higher now that the returning group is a year older, but whether they can handle those expectations remains to be seen.
Outlook: St. Francis coach Jim Bonds was impressed with Arcadia during a passing game early this summer. With such a talented group returning, it may not be all that surprising to see the Apaches make a playoff run.

7. SAN GABRIEL
Strengths: Senior wide receiver Mark Covarrubias highlights the Matadors roster this season. As a junior, Covarrubias caught 57 passes for 815 yards and six touchdowns. He'll also solidify the defense after making 124 tackles as a safety. Senior running back Arthur Brown said he's healthy and no longer has lingering affects from an ankle injury that slowed him last year.
Obstacles: Isaac Valdez spoiled the Matadors with three stellar seasons as quarterback. His speed, agility, management and creativity will be sorely missed. There's a three-player race for the starting job, and Eric Alvarez, a sophomore, appears to be the front-runner. Experience will be hard to come by, however. Injuries plagued the Matadors for most of the preseason, and they hope to shake any ill effects.
Outlook: San Gabriel loaded its nonleague schedule with the likes of Muir, Burbank and Rosemead. If it can avoid injuries, keep games close and have another strong Almont League season, the Matadors can put themselves in position for a good playoff run.

8. ALHAMBRA
Strengths: The Moors are running the Wing-T offense, which is suitable for a team with an offensive line anchored by seniors Chris Salgado and Dominic Gonzales. Lou Torres takes over as head coach after spending more than two decades as an assistant under Gil Ruedaflores. Torres knows the Wing-T offense well, and his experience will help things to run smoothly.
Obstacles: The Moors lost a lot of offensive weapons in Mitchell Crockom (Idaho State), Darrian Cazarin (ELAC) and Vailele Peko (transferred to La Habra). Crockom provided size and speed, while Cazarin was a proven quarterback (2,151 yards, 18 touchdowns).
Outlook: Alhambra looks to improve on last season's 6-4 year and third-place finish in the Almont League. It will be tough to produce offensively, but if newcomer Joshua Mendoza (quarterback) can grasp the offense quickly, the Moors may still find themselves contending.

9. LA CAÑADA
Strengths: Seniors Jay Kolina and Daleep Sandhu return and are ready to carry the load offensively. Kolina, a tight end/linebacker, caught 23 passes for 330 yards and five touchdowns. Sandhu is a quick running back who showed glimpses of producing big numbers last year as a junior -- he rushed for 668 yards and scored seven touchdowns. Michael Arkfeld also returns, and his versatility will help a Spartans team in search of depth -- the senior split time last year at wide receiver, running back and defensive back.
Obstacles: La Cañada lost its two biggest offensive threats in quarterback Rocky Moore (2,143 yards passing, 21 touchdowns) and wide receiver Josh Hanson (800 yards receiving, seven touchdowns). Newcomers will try filling the void, but it could take some time before a noticeable impact.
Outlook: The Spartans look to improve from last year's 5-5 overall record and a third-place finish in the Rio Hondo League. Though it earned a playoff berth after an exciting play-in game, La Cañada hopes to contend for a higher placing and give San Marino and Temple City a run for their money.

10. TEMPLE CITY
Strengths: Look for Temple City to pull away from last year's spread offense. First-year coach Mike McFarland will run multiple formations and an offense that will complement the personnel. Tim Sanderson returns at linebacker. He accounted for 112 tackles last year and will be a big, physical target should he end up playing tight end.
Obstacles: There'll be plenty of competition at quarterback and in the backfield, and replacing Justin Smith (1,726 yards passing, 14 touchdowns) and Max Ruckle (1,116 yards rushing, 13 touchdowns) won't come easy. The senior-studded offensive line is also gone, meaning the Rams' depth on the line remains but experience does not.
Outlook: McFarland is rightfully excited about his new gig. He's at a school where football is king, and that enthusiasm might translate on the field too. It's too early to tell, but at the very least McFarland will have this group starting on the right path.

The solution is to gradually become free of societal rewards and learn how to substitute for them rewards that are under one's own powers. This is not to say that we should abandon every goal endorsed by society; rather, it means that, in addition to or instead of the goals others use to bribe us with, we develop a set of our own.

Skip Hop Studio Diaper Tote Handbag is awesome. So a lot of pockets - and also not really these modest, useless pockets, either. Almost all of the storage compartments are a fantastic dimension and genuinely help maintain everything organized. The handles are a wonderful length and fit nicely over the shoulder; the handle shoulder straps additionally remain put on my own shoulder, which is actually essential when you are transporting a child. The bag appears wonderful, too. Not as well fancy, but not too casual. (I have it in black) The material is soft (can't consider of a far better word) so it is easy to squeeze in to tight spaces - but yet it is sturdy. I have a Fleurville Lexi tote and I really like it, too, but this tote is kind of stiff. I think this Skip*Hop will become my everyday handbag. It's a little bit big - so if you're not really in to large bags this might be greater as an over-night baby diaper tote.

Thank you for a great post

Include the usual facts about yourself such as date of birth (no point hiding your age whatever the reason - it will just be an irritant), address, education, email address (this is very necessary as you just look a bit sad if you don't have one!) and, most importantly, work experience.

Start with your most recent job and work back. The last 10 years work experience is likely to be the most important (particularly if you are looking for similar work) so as you work into the past write less detail.

You really must do something about all these junk comments, it makes it virtually impossible for a genuine person to be heard.

Once you have this the interviewer will scan down your resume for key points (he won't even read it), so you have to make the key points stick out. To do this, all you need to do is read through the job description and put in bold text, on your resume, where you meet the requirements of the job.

What you write is vitally important. As a rough guide, write about half a page on your current job and gradually reduce this looking back.

St. Louis Rams is a good team,I like it.

Your post is really informative for me. I liked it very much.

Sorry for the huge review, but I'm really loving the nfl, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it's the right choice for you.

Realist: I glad after all the the blog entires we have some sort of mutual respect, and you understand where Im coming from. I love my cats and think they're real good in a weak league and weak division, but Im not stupid hahaha.....Ask Stang Fan, I always show love for the mustangs...and I always want our league to beat up on each other like the SEC use to be...I think its more exciting that way. I still stand by my view where I think Monrovia can get by arcadia and possibly glendora...Im concerned about South Hills, San Marino...and thats about it right now...But Im Keeping my eye on blair...if they blow out Duarte this friday...then I know they can make some noise in the rio hondo league...

really? said:

Who cares about ranks!!! Aren't you supposed to beat teams that are in a lower division?

hahaha said:

It's a scrimmage!!! We had the same score against CV.

Realist said:

Philly B-

I like you. Your not like the the other Monrovia fans that think Monrovia is the best team in California. Your right, we will have to wait for the season to see if the success of Arcadia will carry over.

Philly B. said:

Realist- Yeah Im funny, but I mean what I say as well...the jokes will come even greater once the season really kicks off!

And to all those talkin bout a scrimmage: "Not a game, Not a GAME!, BUT we're talkin about... a scrimage...a scrimmage"

That is all...

Realist 2.0 said:

Arcadia did score 6 Tds to Rosemead's 1 Td in the scrimmage on friday. Crazy but true.

Truth said:

I don't understand how Arcadia didn't play well if they beat a team ranked higher than them 42-7?

Realist said:

Im stating facts.. like i said before, if you havent seen them play dont commment.

R u guys trying to convince us, or yourselves????

After arcadia sweeps there preleague games against st francis, monrovia, and temple city i will be blogging again telling everyone i told you so. Trust me when i say this team is for real. But thats why im not talking crap yet cause they havent done anything. But mark my words they will.

Your a funny guy.

Philly B. said:

Realist: See all is well with Monrovia...even if Bubba wasnt playing we have depth at the skilled positions...enough to handle the apaches thats for sure...

hahaha said:

Bubba is playing for Monrovia, period. He is good friends with Rodney Arnett. In fact, Rodney had been seen at several Monrovia practices.

Realist said:

Thats a GREAT question... Ummmmmmmm, maybe i was there and I saw him. Im not sure. But I do know that he lives in Fontana. It could have something to do with a permit. I was wondering if anyone else heard anything.

Just wondering... said:

Realist, when you say "I know for a fact that he was at an Arcadia practice trying to play for Arcadia," how do you exactly know this for a fact? Did he actually tell you "I'm here trying to play for Arcadia"? Because that's the only way it would make it a fact. Do you even know what the word 'fact' means? For example, I know for a fact that he is friends with two of our tailbacks and that's why you might have seen him at one of our practices.

anonymous said:

According to people that were at the scrimmage, neither team (Rosemead/Arcadia) looked very good.

Bernieri said:

People love the content that they come back for more.

Realist said:

Realist 2.0-

The best thing about the game tonight is the fact that Miguel has Rosemead ranked ahead of Arcadia. Just ask the coach for Rosemead who should be ranked higher. HAHAHAHAHAHA

Realist said:

Philly B-

If Bubba gant play for the Cats, they will be lucky to win 1 of their pre season games. Your an "Expert" on Monrovia football. What do you know about Bubba not being able to play?

Philly B. said:

New York,
Yeah it is a tough pre-league schedule...But I only worry about South Hills, and possibly Glendora...Other than that, Im highly confident that the cats can win the other three games! Just like you think the cats have a good chance at going undefeated

Realist 2.0 said:

Word on the street is that Arcadia dominated Rosemead tonight.

Realist said:

Bubba is Derrick Johnson. I heard he can't play football this year????????

Moneytalks said:

realist,

who is bubba???

Anonymous said:

Ask the Fans at CV... after the scrimmage they dont want to see another Bubba.

Realist said:

Ok... I hears of serious talk on the streets. The word is that Bubba can't play with Monrovia this season. Is this true???? I know for a fact that he was at an Arcadia practice trying to play for Arcadia. Monrovians help me out. Im confused.

REALIST- that was funny about Miguel's bromance for Monrovia... funny and true.
Miguel came out here and instantly started "stroking" certain flames in the San Gabriel Valley schools.
To be honest, Miguel, you should head back down to Orange County. You are horrible as a reporter....
There are going to be some surprises this season. Monrovia will do exceptional but look out for a dark horse to pony up. All this talk about La Canada??? They will lose a number of games this season that they shouldn't lose... isn't Maranatha on their schedule? What is a school the size of La Canada doing playing some tiny little school like that? I pick an upset..... I'll stop there! hahahaha

anonymous said:

M-town scored at will vs Crescenta Valley in today's scrimmage. They scored about 4tds on long pass plays and Bueno could have ran all day. The defense registered several sacks even without their 2 best dlinemen (nursing minor injuries). Jerome Brown and Ryan Teegarden created havoc in the backfield all day and made life miserable for the CV qb.

New York said:

Philly B,
I'd phrase it differently and say that every team on Monrovia's schedule has a shot at beating Monrovia. Heck, this is high school football.

Each individual game in isolation, I like Monrovia. Certainly a tough pre-season can take a toll, though.

Philly B. said:

First off let me say that these pre-season rankings dont mean squat!!!! Yeah New York is right for years its been St. Francis and Muir...they are in the higher divisions and usually have the best all around teams...Now overall I think Monrovia has the best team in the area...Thats my opinion like it or not..I could care less....As far as Miguel loving monrovia....Im not even gonna go there....And I am a fan of monrovia BUT I DO NOT THINK THEY WILL GO UNDEFEATED!!!! THATS RIGHT I SAID IT! I THINK WE HAVE A SHOT AGAINST GLENDORA BECAUSE OF OUR SPEED IN THE SECODARY...BUT SOUTH HILLS HAS SOME ATHLETES EVERY YEAR...AND I CANT WAIT FOR THAT GAME! But as far as the realist saying monrovia will struggle in the RHL????? hahahahahaha. San Marino will give us a run for the money with Mooney running the ship of the titans but thats it. T.C. is rebuilding, SP...no, LC, Not up in here! Arcadia...I dont think so but I wont completely count them out!

MoneyTalks said:

Realist,

I can tell you that Arcadia appears to be a very good team this season perhaps 7 wins. The coaching is with out question the best in the SGV. That was not the problem. The problem in recent years was due to the number of kids who came out to play. Arcadia had numbers in the low 20's the past couple of seasons. This year they have 30 something kids and that will be the difference as well as they have great talent this season across the board. It was be interesting. I would say SF is 10 point favorites going in and Monrovia 6 point favorites. Both games could be close ones. We'll see. Bueno conducted a track meet vs arcadia last season. He ran circles around arcadia's defense. Besides that Monrovia had a tough time mustarding any other type of offense. It was a close game even though Arcadia was very down last year, the worst in school history I believe.

Realist said:

Ok... How many of you people have seen Arcadia practice, or play in a passing league game?

hahaha said:

realist 2.0

Bueno carried us to a 13 and 1 season. Not bad for 4'11" baseball player, huh? While your 2 qbs managed only 2 wins. Hope you guys can back up all your talk, cuz you're in for a rude awakening on Week 2!!!

anonymous said:

Monrovia may just finish 6 and 4, but they're not losing to Arcadia. The Apaches aren't very good. I don't understand all the hype after a 2 and 7 season. Carr had a difficult time against fast teams (4INTs vs Pasadena and 5INTs vs Muir).

Go Stangs!!!

anonymous said:

The haters from Arcadia are out in force once again. You guys should worry about St. Francis first. They're probably gonna whip you pretty bad.

New York said:

This is the first time since the blog started in 2006 that Stang Fan can't simply repeat his annual statement about SF starting number one and Muir starting number two but inverting the rankings by the end of the season...

Anonymous said:

Monrovia only joined the top 2 last year, before that it was St. Francis and Muir for the past few years.

Miguel Melendez said:

My favorite teams are the Lakers, Dodgers and UCLA.

Realist said:

Here we go-

I am not surprised at all that Arcadia is 6th in the area due to a terrible season last year. But every single year the number one spot is the same. Monrovia is ranked number 1 every year. St. Francis has been a better football team for years. I think that Muir should be ranked ahead of Monrovia as well. Miguel favorites Monrovia, its blatant. I mean if your going to have a favorite team Miguel, don't make it so obvious.

Here we go again said:

Realist is not happy with Arcadia at No. 6 so now he's gonna start talking smack about Monrovia. Here's a tip Realist, you should be worrying about St. Francis and that they don't put 50 on you next week.

Realist 2.0 said:

Monrovia will be 6-4 at best for the season and make the playoffs. They will choke in RHL too. One man show bueno can't carry the team on his back.

BigFatFan said:

So if SP gives SG a drubbing on Sept. 10, does SP jump into the top 10?

Realist said:

Im SHOCKED. Miguels bromance with Monrovia continues for yet another season.
