Star Picks: Let's all stand for the kickoff. Week 1 begins.

| | Comments (97) |

Melendez: 8-3 last week
Stang Fan: 8-3 last week (Anyhow, here are this week's picks. We differ with Alhambra, Contreras, Glendora, Montebello, and Duarte. Which means I'll be in the lead by Friday night...lol.)

Only five games last Friday. It was exciting to watch it unfold under the lights, but the anticipation and excitement will be even bigger this Friday night when Week 1 begins and the rest of the San Gabriel Valley joins the fun. As for last week, I went 8-3, my losses came when I guessed wrong Gabrielino, Pasadena and Bosco Tech. This week will be very interesting. We have some huge games, starting with the local flavor featuring Arcadia at St. Francis. The Apaches are really going to surprise some people. The young group is a year old and wiser after going through some quiet growing pains last season. A former Arcadia star told me over the weekend the Apaches unleashed on Rosemead in a scrimmage. I still think St. Francis gets the better of Arcadia, but expect the Apaches to hang tough. We also have Monrovia vs. Glendora at Citrus College and Arroyo at Temple City as the Mike McFarland era begins. La Salle vs. Maranatha always has been a good intrigue, but with both schools opening with a loss last week, the matchup loses a bit of its luster.

Thursday's Games
Alhambra at La Canada, 7 p.m. -- MM (La Canada); Stang Fan (Alhambra)
Bosco Tech at Contreras, 7 p.m. -- MM (Bosco Tech); Stang Fan (Contreras)

Friday's Games
Arcadia at St. Francis, 7:30 p.m. -- MM (St. Francis); Stang Fan (St. Francis)
Monrovia vs. Glendora at Citrus College, 7 p.m. -- MM (Monrovia); Stang Fan (Glendora)
Arroyo at Temple City, 7 p.m. -- MM (Arroyo); Stang Fan (Arroyo)
La Salle at Maranatha, 7 p.m. -- MM (La Salle); Stang Fan (La Salle)
South Pasadena at San Gabriel, 7 p.m. -- MM (San Gabriel); Stang Fan (San Gabriel)
San Marino at Gabrielino, 7 p.m. -- MM (San Marino); Stang Fan (San Marino)
Montebello at Rosemead, 7 p.m. -- MM (Rosemead); Stang Fan (Montebello)
Duarte vs. Blair at Muir, 7 p.m. -- MM (Blair); Stang Fan (Duarte)
Keppel vs. Workman at La Puente, 7 pm -- MM (Workman); Stang Fan (Workman)
Muir vs. Saugus at College of Canyons, 7:30 p.m. -- MM (Muir); Stang Fan (Muir)
Marshall at St. Bernard, 7 p.m. -- MM (St. Bernard); Stang Fan (St. Bernard)

Saturday's Games
Pasadena Poly at Malibu, 1 p.m. -- MM (Poly); Stang Fan (Poly)
Rio Hondo Prep vs. Big Bear at Big Bear Middle School, 1:30 p.m. -- MM (RHP); Stang Fan (RHP)
Flintridge Prep vs. St. Genevieve at Sun Valley Poly, 7 p.m. -- MM (St. Gen); Stang Fan (St. Gen)

Yes Arcadia had roughly 1800 male studes. 1400 of which are their for strictly education. Meanwhile SF recruits players from all over. So in this case it doesnt matter how big the school is. Arcadia does't recruit. Bottom line. Arcadia only has about 30 players on their football team because of the demographics in Arcadia.

!stang!:

Haha sf picking on smaller schools? arcadia has roughly 1800 male students.. st francis has about 800. dumb comment

New Orleans Saints jerseys is very beautiful.

Buckster,
Your too funny! But your coach is the one crying after games! What that say about him and the dogz!

Huckster!!!!!!! said:

Why would any team in the SGV be scared of John Mule High? Your coach got scared in the first quarter of the San Gabriel game and put in two kids that were not supposed to play until the 2nd quarter! I seen you guys play and I really think the whole Mule bandwagon should just calm it down a bit!!!!! Like all the other teams we all have a ways to go from the looks of the first game.

!stang! said:

St. Fanny is like the local bully. It picks on smaller schools! Why does st.fanny continue to play the pacific league in preseason? If your going to play the pacifi league at least pick the best team! Stop running from muir!

Try reading again Realist said:

Realist,
I was talking about Arcadia playing for pride. Try reading a little slower. Your school must not have pride in you right now!!!!

Realist said:

St. Win again-

HAHAHAH you play for PRIDE????? A private school plays for Pride?? I dont believe my eyes. What is prideful about leaving the city you grew up in and played little league in and played ayso in to go to a private school? Use any other word but pride. Because believe me, there is no PRIDE in going to a private school. Kids play high school sports to reperesent their town, their city, where they grew up! That is pride. Your pathetic. And it is clear that you havent seen Arcadia play this year!

St. Win a gain said:

What does arcadia have this year that makes them any different from last year? The Rail kid? He lacks experience and hasn't proven anything worth while for discussion. Lagace? He led his team to a 2-7 season last year. Arnett? He fumbles all the time. Carr? He will throw INTs. Same story same song - defense is too soft can't tackle as well. I expect another blow out by the end of the 1st quarter as usual. Play for pride. That's it.

Sf shutout win as usuall

another losing season coming up for arcadia once again. look for key players to be hobbling around the second half of the year as always

Philly B. said:

Moneytalks- You really think the arcadia game against monrovia will be a barnburner??? Hahahaha, I dont know about that. I think it will be a good game in the first half with all this hype after a scrimmage against rosemead who isnt the same team that went to the CIF finals.

I guess game of the week should go to Arcadia-St. Francis...only by default...I really dont see any other games that intrigue me enough to say that they should be game of the week.

mr almont said:

alhambra will bonce back this week after a tuff lost to roosevelt 16-13. alhambra is too big for la canada on both side of the ball. so we will wear them down GO MOORS!

You've got to give Maranatha vs La Salle a shot at game of the week. Will be the Pasadena small school game of the year. Check out the event on Facebook. Maranatha vs La Salle football. Lots of trash talking going on.

Bob Anon said:

That Blair/Duarte game is intriguing. I think Blair will win, but I feel bad for Tip, hopefully Duarte will improve this year.

MoneyTalks said:

The former apache star is correct. Arcadia had a party against Rosemead. In my honest opinion, I believe arcadia can hang with SF for 3 quarters. Their depth is always too much for the apaches and usually get the best of them. I hope arcadia can prove me wrong as I am a huge fan. This is high school football and anything can happen. If SF worries too much about Lagace, I think it is going to bite them in the behind because arcadia has talent in all positions this season.

It will be interesting!! I would say SF is 10 point favorites. Monrovia next week will be a barn burner, a high scoring affair/shoot out.
