Star Picks: Most leagues open in Week 6, it matters now.

The Stang Fan and I will go head-to-head this season…

Melendez: 15-1 last week; total 64-29-1
Stang Fan: 12-4 last week; total 68-25-1

By the way, check out Aram’s All-Encompassing SGV(N) Top 25, as Maranatha and Arcadia make an appearance.

NOTE: St. Francis plays Saturday, according to I’ve changed it on the schedule here.

NOTE 2: Pasadena plays Friday, not Thursday. This is what happens when I update my budgets past midnight…

If not for my laughable 6-9-1 record in Week 5, I’m confident I would be running away with 2010 picks against Stang Fan. It’s a tight race and Week 6 could be crucial as most teams begin league play. (Folks, there’s still no wager between Stang and myself, so suggestions are definitely welcome). My lone loss last week was St. Francis (lost to Paso Robles 42-28. Muir, La Canada, St. Francis and Sage HIlls were Stang Fan’s wrong picks last week. Let me say this: I was not surprised to see Arcadia win big against Muir. The Apaches completely outplayed the Mustangs, and so far I’ve yet to see Muir respond when its back are against the wall. Arcadia went up 7-0 in a matter of minutes. Muir responded with a three-and-out, the end result a 72-yard fumble return for a touchdown to put the Apaches on top 14-0. I have Muir winning this week because Crescenta Valley’s record is bloated. The Mustangs have played the tougher schedule and within that schedule have shown they can compete. It’s time to finish. As for Arcadia, now’s not the time to get too high. Yes, huge win Friday and nice to see your league record unblemished, but the Apaches must maintain focus as they head into a Pacific Leauge showdown against Burroughs, also 2-0 in league. If Arcadia stays focused, disciplined and ready to show its back, then the Apaches will be a force to be recokned with. Big game for the folks at Maranatha. The Minutemen (5-1) travel to Whittier College to battle Whittier Christian (5-1) in an Olympic League showdown. Is it just me, or has the San Marino-Temple City game lost its luster because of recent struggles? Still, the Rams have shown steady improvement, and this is when Temple City will put it all together. Once again it should be an exciting week ahead.

I didn’t pick all the games–don’t be offended if your team’s match was not picked.

Glendale upsets Pasadena. Prove me wrong, PHS…
Temple City starts its quest for 2nd place with a win over San Marino.
Serra wins, but hope it’s competitive.
    Burroughs, but would prefer Arcadia.
South Pasadena wins; LC defense has regressed too much, and if Gray is injured, uh-oh. Hope I’m wrong.
Monrovia over Blair; finally Blair plays a familiar opponent.
Muir, in a really close game

  • stangfan2

Muir cant and wont lose to CV are you kidding me? Muir is going 2 bounce back BIG friday night @ Muir

thanks for picking against us this week.. maybe this time we won’t complile a billion yards in penalties like we did last week when you did pick us.

  • Miguel Melendez

Natha Senior: Don’t get caught up on the blog and who picks which team. But good luck Friday. Maranatha-Whittier Christian has the makings of an epic game.

    TC v SM

how times have changed since 06/07 majority of those coaches are at SM.. its going to be weird seeing Mooney and staff on the away sidelines… and to top it off its TC homecoming game

MY pick SM wins a close one 21-14 ….

  • The Stang Fan

Miguel I have a completely different take on the game. I was STUNNED to see Arcadia win big. Remember, the score mirrored the score of the Muir/Amat game (without our QB and others), and Arcadia and Amat are not even close to being in the same league. Do you think they are?

You must’ve known something the rest of us didn’t. You must’ve known Muir was going to play flat. You knew they would be uninspired. You foresaw the lack of concentration on all those DAMN turnovers. You predicted a plethora of penalties. You envisioned a lack of identity. You forecasted nonsensical play-calling. Well, I guess you’re WAY smarter than I am.

Truth is, you’re the only one who knew. And the reason you were the only one is because Arcadia is not 21 points better than Muir. Not even close. Well, let me clarify. Last week Arcadia was the better TEAM, by far. I loved and admired their OVERALL effort, which, combined with Muir’s utter INEPTITUDE made for an a**-kicking. This isn’t a situation where Muir just didn’t show up and Arcadia simply won. No. Muir definitely didn’t show up, BUT Arcadia busted their a**es and smacked the Stangs. And the way the Stangs showed up that Friday night, I’m GLAD AS HELL that the Apaches put it to’em!!!! I’m sure they made there fans extremely proud….the Stangs?….not so much.

I spoke this past weekend of potential, which means you’ve done NOTHING. Muir has done NOTHING. IF they actually played to their “potential” they wouldn’t have lost to Saugus, Burbank, or Arcadia…which is why I’m picking them to LOSE to CV this week. They need to prove themselves, and not to their fans…but to THEMSELVES!!! Period!

Btw, Miguel a “3 and out” is when the opposing team shuts down the offense on three consecutive plays and forces a punt. Muir’s first two plays went for first downs. The third was a poorly pitched option which was picked up for a 70 yard score the other way. That opening drive pretty much summed up the ENTIRE game.

    Yeah…I’m still pissed.

  • BigCat

Blair vs. Monrovia at Pasadena is on Thursday. Is this due to a field conflict or did the SPCA step in? TIA.

  • Realist

I completely agree with every one of Miguels picks. I would like to see Maranatha win. This is a big game to prove if they are a contender or not. I think Muir runs all over CV. I think Arcadia will win by atleast 14 points. And I think TC sqeaks one out over SM. The toughest pick is Gelndale over Dena. I think Pasadena could win this game. They are going to have to prove us all wrong and play like they want it. I havent seen this Dena team play with heart and emotion all year.

  • Bronco5

Serra runs the same offense as Paso Robles only better. So if St. Francis doesn’t step it up on defense this week it could get real ugly real quick. By the way when was the last time a team came into the WSGV that was ranked in the top ten in state to play one of the schools? I’m pulling for St. Francis it should be fun to watch.
    Go Knights!

  • Wise Guy

Hey for the second week in a row you have forgotten some football games. Try looking them up, but maybe t6he people of El Monte can’t read or don’t have computers anyway. This is the biggest game of the year, and nobody will show maybe the other paper will list it.

  • PacificLeague

Has anyone actually seen Burroughs play? How do they match up against Arcadia? I know they played a real tough non league schedule

  • HeavyHitter

ST.Francis/Serra is that game on SATURDAY or FRIDAY???

My bad. St. Francis hosts Serra on Saturday, not Friday.

Stang Fan: Still waiting on your picks, buddy. So, not exactly three and out, but you got the idea.

Insanity or the curse of death?
Miguel and others are picking TC to womp on San Marino?

Guys, we beat one horrendous SoElMo team – that is it. We are playing a team with coaches who still have Hitchcock Field mud adhering to the bottom of their cleats. Most all could find and climb the crows nest ladder while blindfolded, and a couple probably still have a moldy jock and some loose change in an a corner locker somewhere. That is the field where Loya called the two point conversion against LC, where Mooney watched Broadnax and others ripped off long runs, where Saxon, Caceres, Camerena all played, where Carrington hung for decades, Cable for awhile ….basically McFarland and crew are the visitors, the old guard is coming back to town.

Last season we boasted a far superior team and got beat cleanly by San Marino, on the back of the worst scouted and no game plan Friday TC has seen in some time….along with the one difference maker SM had, Stevie Yortsos. We simply passed our way straight to defeat in the 2nd half – against a defense that had no reason to fear the run, after Mooney and crew made some halftime changes to prevent the long ball…and we just kept on throwing the long ball anyway.

McFarland won’t make any of these mistakes. But SM has seen our problems and will dance away from our strengths, that is for sure. Loya will test the waters
and SM will try to grind, short snap the punt, and do some weird kickoff thing, maybe sneak in a dbl pass and throwback.

We outdrive them and we win. Seniors, grab one back for us!

    Go Rams!!

  • Hal Lamaster

    Pasadena at Glendale-
Glendale keeps it close in first half then the wheels come off.
    Pasadena +14

    Arcadia at Burroughs-
Burroughs’s record is misleading having lost to former Foothill League foes Hart, Saugus and Canyon. I like how Arcadia is getting better every week but Burroughs looks to have too much.
    BHS +7

    Crescenta Valley at Muir-
This game has playoff implications… Burbank and Arcadia have already defeated Muir. Burroughs will probably beat Muir. If the Mustangs want to get a playoff spot this game is a must-win. It’s time for Muir to play a complete game.
    Muir +7

    Burbank at Hoover
    Running clock-
    Burbank +35

    stang fan

man you got me a little fired up over here i see you know what your talking about. muir has too much potential and havent played to it yet. and miguel i agree with stang fan you must be some type of psychic you know as well as the rest of the sgv knows muir is far more talented than almost every opponent they played. record should be 4-1 not 1-4 with a close lost to bishop amat. unlike you stang fan im going to have to say muir wakes up this week (hopefully) and destroys c.v…..i pick muir to win big +21…burroughs over arcadia only because i dont think that fire they had against muir is still going to be there BHS + 17…pasadena over glendale there is no way pasadena losses to glendale but then again glendale did play weak cathedral much tougher, it can go anyway phs=ghs…of course burbank over hoover by atleast 40 burbank +40….thats my pacific league breakdown.

    Re: Goldenarm

So you think SM is going to win this Friday? When was the last time SM beat TC at North Field? Personally, I like TC over SM by two TD’s. SM doesnt have the offensive to overcome TC. I would like to see TC use more play-action pass to keep SM off balance. You know the SM staff is going to sellout on the run vs. TC and put the ball in the hand of the sophomore. Sanderson and Simon could have huge nights if coach Mac can keep the defense on its heels. SM had a hard time slowing down Rosemeads RB. If SM had Kwamae Do I might see this going the other way. Bottom-line SM hasnt played well against physical teams. TC should have beat Rosemead. Without a doubt this is a major statement game for the RHL. The winner of this game plays the winner of the SP vs. LC game to get the 2 spot. Have you ever seen so much riding on the opening week of the RHL…ironically Monrovia plays Blair Thursday, which could be a sign of things to come for Monrovia in league play…blowouts for the Cats till mid November.

  • Anonymous

the game (Monrovia/Blair) is at Muir on thursday 7:00 pm

  • Realist

I really like that running back TC has.. He is a good runner with good vision. How old is that kid? Anyone know??

  • Goldenarm

here is my recap of the TC backfield:

Josh S looks like he is 12 and he weighs maybe 150, but the sucker is tough as nails. Last year against Rosemead as a DB, he made one of the best hits of the year on the Meads TE. He is quicker than Ruckle (that says alot)and is learning to follow and break off blocks to daylight.

Jaime Dea (5’3″)is going to see some touches against SM as well I think, and this kid has some skill. He makes tacklers miss. But damn, he sure is little.

Carlos Mota runs hard and is a good combo with the TC fullback Lopez. If we ever develop a power attack, this is it. Mota just needs a lane and he can take it to the house.

Quintanilla – QB, continues to show he is a gamer and can throw completions if given time. He is starting to show he is fully capable of running the offense as just a soph.

    FB Einstein,

No. I think TC will do well on Friday. But, when Miguel picks you, strange things happen,,,,this is my attempt to ward off the Melendez Mojo.

I hope Ram fans turn out in droves. We need to let McFarland know the Green/Gold is behind him and we can live with 1-4 preleague. This is a huge game for Temple City in the overall cosmic football universe. A win is a statement that we are clawing ourselves back into respectability. No where near Monrovia, but back playing sound football with no frills and standing tall. It signals the McFarland era is upon us and I like the ring of that. We need a 10 year presence at head coach.
A win means alot, which is why Mooney is going to SM ready.

TC line – that D line is going to be shooting low all night so BE READY TO push them to the ground.

  • PurdueAlum05

    The Stang Fan,
I thought you guys would beat Arcadia by two or three touchdowns. I wasn’t at the game, but I made my picks as if I were betting and you guys haven’t had the hot hand all season. Nothing personal, it might be injuries or a lack of numbers or a lack of discipline, but 99.9% of the time I root for you guys. Good luck Friday!

  • Huckster!!!!!!!!

    Stang Fan and SGV fans,

Ive seen Muir play and the rest of the Pacific league, so I dont get how anyone could possibly say, Muir has the most talent! The difference between the Pacific league teams is the quarter back play! Arcadia and Burbank have the best two QBs in the league. Then Hoover, Glendale and CV QBs dont make many mistakes and PHS & Muir have the worse QB play of all the teams in the league! There are some other things I could point out, but thats the main difference when it comes to winning and losing in Pacific league play! Muir has no senior leadership and there coaching STINKS!

All Ill say about PHS is, LETS TRY AND COMPETE FIRST! That hurts to even say that!

  • valley guy

SHUT UP….p.h.s is the worst team ever they have no talent what so ever and they’re not even competitive them dudes lye down every game and you say muir coaching sucks lol….so does p.h.s and muir qb is way better than p.h.s qb and i dont wanna hear oh he’s a sophmore well then he should of played j.v….HUCKSTER!!!! erase your blog hoover might just beat yall LOL…i know glendale will….

  • Huckster!!!!!!!

    Valley Guy,

Keeping it real! I can see Muir losing to PHS, because of a lack of running game and Jeffery Davis playing QB the whole game! I know I can say some $hit on here, but real football talk I can tell you how the unthinkable can happen! Ill be giving a football opinion not a rivalry opinion. PHS has more talent than you think, but if you don’t go to the games you might have a different opinion. Ill hit you up on what could be a 2-7 PHS vs. 3-6 Muir Turkey Tussle!

  • BigA

@ Valley Guy from a Muir fan i cant say jeff davis is better then anyone right now the kid is scared to get hit
@Huckster!!!!!!! I promise that the oline can run block and the back is good (#22) it just the OC we run the ball from under center and were a problem we run out of shotgun and well were a 1-4 team

  • Monrovia27

Hey I actually heard the game was now at Monrovia not in Pasadena!

  • Anonymous

No, Monrovia/Blair game still Thursday at Muir.

  • Goldenarm

Is Donnell Wilson playing for PHS?

  • Goldenarm

Laying blame on PHS Soph QB seems way out of line.
You could plop Nick Bueno into PHS starting line up and still have trouble winning games.

The problem lies within the program, the coaching and the admin support and PHS Athletics overall. In the case of Cox, much like at TC, the expectations for his performance are jacked so high, he is bound to disappoint in some way. A rare few kids can jump from Pop Warner football to starting Varsity safety or even more rare, starting Varsity QB, at just 14 1/2 years old. Putting a kid in that position is a coaching choice and therefore, a coaching error.
This is a kid that if he doesn’t burn out, will be an area star by his junior year. Had he come to TC as a freshman with the Backus regime in place, he would not have been exposed to 18 year olds pounding him and immediate defensive responsibilities at a position he was not even familiar with – where he struggled and cost his team heavily – all because of a coaching decision. He was given no learning curve.
The kid is an outstanding athlete and PHS should be estatic to have him on their roster. If they are not, he is always welcome back at TC, where I am sure McFarland would get him into a position where he can help TC win football games. By the way, his dad told me Brandon was expected to hit 6’4″ at least. I would look for great things from him in his junior and especially senior year.

  • Big Daddy

    Interesting prediction:
I have seen three sources predict Rio over Village Christian. Are they aware VC is 2 divisions above Rio and ranked 6th? VC enrollment 1800, Rio 100. Hope all are correct and Rio gets the respect it has earned.

  • Old School Ram

    Re: FB Einstein

For a guy who calls himself Einstein you are shaort on history and math.

First the history–1994 was the last time SM beat TC at North Field. That season the Rams and Titans came into week 5 both 4-0 and playing for the RHL Championship. The Rams pounded SM behind the efforts of Brian Vatrone, Joey DeKarr, Brian Costantino, and Jason Moorehead. They lead by 6 with just over a minute to play. Dan Loyd lead the Titans on a 55 yard TD drive to win the ball game. The OC under Bill Maloney that night—
    a young Mike Mooney.

Now the math–the transitive property does not apply in sports much less high school football. Our score versus Rosemead and SM’s score versus Rosemead does not add up to an advantage in the game Friday. That being said I do think our Rams will win the game because they are getting better every week while SM is headed in the opposite direction. SM seems to have returned to soft and unispired play under Mooney’s watch which is surprising to say the least. Our Rams will pound the “BMW Boys” (thanks for that GA) into submission this Friday at Hitchcock Stadium.

  • valley guy

now lets be real p.h.s does not have more talent then muir now they might have the most upcoming talent but as of right now no no way do they have more talent then muir…and wow you really think muir is only going to win 3 games smh….muir will end this season at 6-4 going into the playoffs and p.h.s well i give them 3 games they will find someway to beat glendale this week hopefully…man i use to love p.h.s but over the years there just never competitive when it comes to the turkey tussel or any other team….but muir will go 6-4 and make a deep deep run into the playoffs possibly all the way to the champioship…muir worst can be 5-5 but no lower….

  • Anon

Not that it matters much but Village has 450 students not 1800. They do not even have 1800 k-12.

  • Huckster!!!!!!!!

    Valley Guy,

Muir is average at best! A lot of those first time starters are not getting it done when the lights are on.Then the coaching staff doesnt know how to get their big playmaker Karl Holmes the rock! I have some suggestions, but I wont be the one to give them a clue on how to salvage the season. I write some out landish things on here, but to say Muir will go deep into the playoffs and then the Championship! Oh, boy! I know now that the saying Nope to Dope and Ugg to Drugs is still alive! I never said PHS had more talent than Muir, but they are about the same! You can ask any Muir people that know me and Ive been saying all a long that Muir and PHS were about the same! I might be a little touched, but I know football! PHS is terrible, but Muir is fighting them for that spot!

  • New York

    Old School Ram,
Let me add a bit more color to that 1994 RHL Championship game at North Field. It was definitely a game for the ages.

Vetrone and Dekarr were smaller backs, but I remember them making key catches from Schneider. The real pounding came from Brian Betts running behind David Gardner, Tommy Boeking and David Saensnuk, not really Jason Moorehead who was mostly on defense.

San Marino’s stingy defense frustrated and stopped TC enough. The key to that was the willingness and ability of the undersized SM D-Line led by Eddie Shuai and Ming Hsu to eat mud and create human piles out of themselves and the much larger TC offensive line, thus clogging up the TC power inside running game.

SM’s grind it out running from their staggered-I along with Danny Loyd’s ability to scramble enough and throw darts sealed the deal late in the fourth quarter.

That 1994 game was an awesome, but probably not nearly as disappointing to Ram’s faithful as TC’s loss to SM in 1993 when TC was undefeated and finished 9-2 (SM and Trabuco Hills were the two losses). The 1993 team was led by Eric McMurtery, Andrew Constantino and Brian Gardner among others. I saw them beat Schurr on a last play field goal.

  • valley guy

LOL…U FUNNY FOR NOPE TO DOPE JOKE….but average wow and karl isnt the only weapon of choice over there he is a bomb threat though then you got the others who can make a 5 or 6 yard pass turn into a 60 or 70 yard touch down run..but again everyone is right when you bring up muir coaching issue’s they’re terrible but with the weapons muir have they should be either undefeated or with 1 loss p.h.s talent is not in the same pool as muir it shows every end of the year game and muir has been having these terrible coaches for the past 3 or 4 years…unless you saying p.h.s coaching is worst then it is what it is…but according to you p.h.s has good coaching well then the talent cant be there every player is not just laying down every game come on HUCK..

    old school ram

Stir the history pot and conjur up whatever mojo there is to be had. Thx for the excellent recap, NY too.

Note to Ramrodders – return the history pages to the program which show past team records, past coaching achievements and historical won/loss records versus area schools. The youngsters need to see, understand and hopefully emulate the efforts of those that came before.

If we can avoid turnovers and have one or two “big ” plays – we can spoil the BMW brigade’s return to North Field. My voice has finally returned after my verbal assault on last weeks refs – normally a more relaxed and happy spectator am I.
    Go Rams

  • food for thought

Pacific Fans, I am not sure if the pacific will get three teams into the playoffs. Honestly no one in the pacific has any qaulity wins..For example Since both hoover and Glendale lost to Midvalley teams, that weakens the Pacific. Since Arcadia lost big to monrovia, that weakens the league too. Only two spots are a lock for each league. The rest is up for grabs. If Arcadia finish first second or third, that lost to Monrovia kills because arcadia will have beaten everyone else and that won’t fly with cif. Now Muir was better off Finishing 3rd with losses to Burbank and Burroughs. That way they would not be caught up in that mess. Now if muir will have to run the table just to have shot, but even if arcadia losses to Burbank and Burroughs, they will have the tie breaker against Muir. They may not get in because they lost to ya see the pacific will only get two in this year, that will be first and second place teams.

Almont: SG @ Montebello: Oilers have new stadium. Looks nice AND they even have their track installed. SG wins. Alhambra @ Keppel. The Battle for the Hat on Valley Blvd. GA, remember the old lady with the humped neck that served the pastramis?

Pacific: Muir and PHS might break into the WHEN? colunm or they might not. Apaches on the road again for the 5th time in 6 weeks. Reno likes Coach D’s Road Warrior crew.

Saturday Nite Special: Serra @ SF. Can the Golden Knights get of their recent slump to play the divisions best team? Reno might have to take in this game. It might be bigger than Notre Dame @ SF last year. (Serra SMACKED ND earlier this season).

Food for thought, the Pacific gets 4 automatic teams into CIF. The Southeast Division has only one at-large berth for all four leagues in the division.

  • A blind man and his guide dog enter a bar and find their way to a barstool. After ordering a drink, and sitting there for a while, the blind guy yells to the bartender, “Hey, you wanna hear a blonde joke?” The bar immediately becomes absolutely quiet. In a husky, deep voice, the woman next to him says, “Before you tell that joke, you should know something, the bartender is blonde, the bouncer is blonde, and I’m a 6′ tall, 200 lb. blonde with a black belt in karate. What’s more, the woman sitting next to me is blonde and she’s a weight lifter. The lady to your right is a blonde, and she’s a wrestler. Think about it seriously, Mister. You still wanna tell that joke?” The blind guy says, “Nah, not if I’m gonna have to explain it five times.” =))
