Football: Monrovia is untouchable in 57 win over Blair

PASADENA – It’s supposed to be tackle football, but what Monrovia High School witnessed in its Rio Hondo League opener against Blair on Thursday night at Muir High was more like touch football. Only the Wildcats were never touched the entire first quarter.

The first five times Monrovia (4-2 overall) had the ball, the Wildcats scored untouched en route to a 57-0 victory. The entire second half was played with a running clock.

“It could have been much worse than this, but we didn’t want to do that,” Monrovia quarterback Nick Bueno said.

“I don’t know,” Wildcats coach Randy Maddox said about what the final score might have been.

The first time Blair (2-4 overall) tackled a Monrovia player, the Wildcats already had a 37-0 lead. Antavion Allen came from behind to nab Bueno on a 22-yard run – the only time in the game Bueno didn’t score while carrying the ball.

Monrovia scored on the next play, though, Christian Blanco going 18 yards – and he was only touched because he ran up the middle.

“If everyone does their job, I knew we would end up in the end zone,” Bueno said.

“But I didn’t expect all that. Everyone was just doing their job. The line did a great job. We did not come here taking it easy on anyone. We came in doing what we needed to do.”

That was essentially it for the Wildcats starters. Sophomore George Frazier came in at quarterback. He had a potential touchdown dropped on his second play, and for the first time in the game Monrovia came away without scoring points; their field-goal attempt by Mason Bryant was blocked.

If the starters had remained, and if there had been no running clock, a league scoring record certainly would’ve been within reach.

“This was the message last week,” Maddox said. “It’s a new season. We start 0-0. We’re getting ready for Rio Hondo League play and for our postseason play. What happened in preseason is over. We’re working each week to get better.”

It was the Wildcats’ 13th consecutive league victory and the Vikings’ sixth consecutive league loss. Blair has been shut out for three consecutive games.

The Vikings were without head coach Gary Parks, who’s in Texas tending to his ill mother. The Vikings were run by committee.

“We just have to live for another day,” assistant coach Keith Alex said. “It’s not as consoling as they’d like it to be, but it’s life. You’re going to have those valleys. We’re in the valley and we just have to climb up.”

On Monrovia’s first play from scrimmage, Jay Henderson took a reverse and went 65 yards untouched for a touchdown. Bueno then ran a draw play 58 yards untouched for a TD.

Zach El’Radi blocked a Richard Bagnerise punt, and Bueno hit a wide-open Anthony Craft on a 40-yard TD pass.

The Wildcats then got their second consecutive blocked punt, Kenny Machi’s block of a Bagnerise kick sending the ball out of the end zone for a 23-0 lead with 4:42 left in the opening quarter.

Bueno then ran the option 63 yards untouched 26 seconds later, then hit Luke Williams on a reverse screen. He went 33 yards for the final untouched TD.

Bueno was moved to flanker when Frazier entered the game and caught a 35-yard TD pass – untouched, of course – for a 50-0 lead with 3:16 left in the half.

“We came out, executed and did what we needed to do,” Maddox said. “Our offense looked good, our defense played well. We just worked to get better each week.”

Bueno rushed for 153 yards and two TDs, completed both of his passes for TDs and a total of 73 yards, and caught that 35-yard TD pass.

Sophomore Cade Shultz scored the lone points in the second half on a 20-yard run.

The Wildcats ran only 22 plays in the game. Monrovia rushed for 313 yards and averaged 17.4 yards per carry.

Blair didn’t get its first first down until the second half. The Vikings were held to 12 yards rushing and 16 total yards.

it is 730 pm – somebody got word on the game?

  • Goldenarm

Blair is 2-3, Temple City is 1-4, that places us in the cellar even when Blair goes 2-4 by midnight tonight.

Rams are giving up 27.8 points a game, something that must change if anyone wearing horns ever wants to smile again.

Blair is giving up 32.2 pts a game.

  • Anonymous

    hey goldenarm;

go over to whittier daily news’ preps section. They have the game listed on their football scoreboard (but no score) Hopefully they’ll put one up soon.

  • Romball

Monrovia 37- Blair 0 second quarter from Freddies scoreboard.

    Monrovia 50 Blair 0

At the start of the 3rd Quarter

  • MonroVian

    Monrovia -50 – Blair – 0 half time… WoW!

  • Fallin Vike

Maddox is a classless butt hole. Come on dude…you’re passing when you’re up 44-0 with 3mins left in the half. And to make matters worse, you move Bueno to WR to haul in the score. Jeez….way to go guy.

  • HOT ROD

I don’t know how deep the depth chart is for the Rove but everyone suited up in uniform should get playing time in the second half.

  • Anonymous

Fallin Vike: Since you obviously know nothing about monrovia, let me educate you. #5, George Frazier, is Bueno’s backup and replacement. This enormous lead is the perfect time to allow a young quarterback to gain valuable varsity playing time in the position he will most likely start in next year, as you can tell when he threw that touchdown pass, he has a pretty good arm. Maddox wasn’t doing it to run the score up on Blair, he was doing it with consideration of next year in mind. Also, if you havent read up on Bueno, he is getting looks from colleges into possibly playing slot receiver. This is why he has been jumping into that position from time to time this year. Games like these allow the coaching staff to experiment with plays and assignments in a real varsity game setting. Thanks.

  • Romball

Fallin’ Vike… I know this is going to sound awful but he’s playing his backups. There may be a possibility the Sophomore you saw at QB will play with Nick at another position which is not their primary positions. I know Maddox would not run up the score intentionally but this may have something to do with teaching his kids that “killers instinct” that they lacked in the San Dimas game. Maddox never loses an opportunity to coach up his players. It’s unfortunate that Blair and others in The RHL may feel the wrath of a hungry Monrovia team but in order to avoid the previous “can’t win the big game/close a game” monikers this may be happening more frequently.

  • Fallin Vike

Oh mister anonymous punching judy…its bush league no matter how you try to classify it. I don’t care if your backup QB was a one-armed midget who was blind in one eye…it’s b.s. Pretty much all your drives started in Blair’s territory. What are they going to do…..really? It’s called run the ball. C-Jack should have been able to shake and bake a couple.

And CHILD PLEASE! Stop with oh Bueno is getting this look and Bueno is getting that look. YOU must not know too much about YOUR team, their talent or their skill if you haven’t learned in 3 years that Slick Nick is a baller and a winner. I don’t need to see him in the game at center when you’re up 44-0 in the 2nd for any weak a$$ reason.

Stop making excuses for classless actions against a hapless program. I hope M-Town gets their just desserts down the road.

Wow Fallin Vike, i cant believe you said that. Maddox went straight to the refs at the half and requested a running clock which I’m sure in some cases never happens. Like the first Anonymous said, Our second string drops very little from the first team. George Frazier is going to be a killer throwing QB next season and this was one of is first opportunties to enjoy a little Varsity education for that position. Maybe we should have taken him out at LB as well. The truth of the matter is that Monrovia scored on its first 5 touches in the first quarter and the game was pretty much over then. 35-0 in the first quarter. We could have started the running clock in the second quarter and the score would have ended up much the same. You should be looking more at your coaches and calling them the explitives you are trying to call Maddox. He was simply doing his job. The kids are out there to play and not to the satisfaction of a few disgruntled fans like yourself. Hopefully Blair will gain something from this game going into their RHL play and win a few games.

It looks like YOU are the one who doesn’t know what you are talking about. Lets assume I was Maddox attempting to run up the score, I would simply leave Bueno under center and allow him to run all over your team like he did in the first quarter. Bueno at quarterback running the ball is much more dangerous than a young quarterback with a developing arm. Thanks for the practice Blair. Also, “hapless program” huh? Worry about your own team first, thank you.

  • Anonymous

Wow, fallin vike, you just got owned. Id go crawl back to were you came from if i were you, come up with a plan for your team because i felt sorry for those boys all night.

  • Fallin Vike

Um yeah, Maddox should of asked for the running clock in the 2nd qtr…like hapless lil Blair was going to storm back on you guys.

Haha, whatever. Like I said, be careful what you wish for. Love a lot of your kids, but Maddox just lost all his credibility.

And for the record…I’m not a Blair fan, parent etc. Just an independent observer.

  • viking fan

57-0. Hard loss. No major injuries on our side. One monrovia player had to be carried off the field, hopefully he’s ok. Monrovia did what they were expected to do and did it effortlessly. All we can do is look towards next week.

  • Anonymous

Oh no, Maddox just lost every ounce of your credibility, what will he ever do? Go back to West Covina? Quit coaching forever? Oh no, I just checked, he continues to be supported by an extremely large majority of the Wildcat fanbase. No one but yourself view him as a “classless butt hole”. Dont believe me? Ask around. Youre just another troll in a sea of many trolls. Your thoughts on this blog mean nothing at all. Have a nice night

  • Fallin Vike

Owned..really? You play your 1′s because they earned it. Bueno got the reps he deserved. He did his thing…it was beautiful.

But your rationale is lame beyond belief. So say X college was looking at Bueno for a slot receiver, why not start him there against the teams you know you’re going to smack silly? I mean…now let’s talk about coaching up Frazier. That would give the best opportunity to get quality reps for the future.

I’m gonna laugh when you conceded coach $hits the bed in the postseason again.

  • I was on the sideline……..

Coach Maddox is a class act. He did not run up the score in the first half. Are you kidding me? Running up the score is when you have the first team out in the 4th quarter up by 5 or more touchdowns. All bets are off until the second half. We play football nose to nose until that time in fact and Coach Maddox was already substituting 2nd strings players in the first half.

As far as running the clock, that has to come from the Blair coaching staff not Monrovia. So let’s get the facts straight before you start mouthing off on Coach Maddox.

Maybe next time Blair may want to forfeit a game before they play so the visiting team doesn’t run up the score. NOT!

My hats off to Blair for sticking together as a team, it is tough week after week when you get waxed on a regular basis. I wish them well.

  • Pasadena Baller

    Pasadena Baller said,

Blair shouldn’t even be mentioned. They are a embarrassment and have no coaches at that school. They don’t take sports seriously and have no class, just ask the other Rio Hondo League schools. Its always sombody else’s fault.Stop complaining and coach your kids to be at least competitive. Good luck the rest of league because you are going to need it,lets just not make excuses, take responsibilty and learn to compete.

  • Anonymous

    Lets see.. “conceded coach”
    From the dictionary:
“Conceded 1. To acknowledge, often reluctantly, as being true, just, or proper; admit” How that would cause one to poop their bed is beyond me…

  • another anonymous

FallinVike..I understand you being embarrased by being a Blair Viking tonight, but come on dude to wish Monrovia bad luck is making you and your fake name even that much more of an embarrasment. If you were just some casual bystander then you need to change your name to fit the mold. You could have at least changed it to fallinStang or something but you really know how to hide from the crowd on this blog.
I’ll give you a good name in case you ran out of creativity….How about just calling your self Wildcat HATER 2010? Makes for better conversation.

  • Fallin Vike

Haha…you’re going to go the grammar and spelling route? Yeah whatever. Your lil green tribe is jaded beyond belief.

You guys want some rags to wipe Maddox’s giz off your grills? Jeez……

  • Anonymous

MaddoxHater is more suitable, Id say.

  • Ps…

Monrovia didn’t even play their first string running back tonight. He would have probably had a good 200 plus yards in the first half. Michael Harris. So take that as a blessing and good sportsmanship from the Coach you want to put down. Monrovia will not lye down this season just to prove they are the better team, We will only play and get better in areas we need more work on.

  • Fallin Vike

Oh and……MEMO TO ALL YOU MENTAL MIDGETS…there is more than one team in the Mid-Valley Division with a Viking as a mascot. You guys are so lost in a sea of your own b.s. it’s laughable.

  • Fallin VIke later that night

Mommy, the people on Miguel’s blog didnt agree with me and they made me mad! *stamps foot*

  • Monrovia fan

very tough game to watch tonight against Blair……Monrovia scored five touchdowns on their first six offensive plays in the first quarter. Blair did not make a first down in the first half. Monrovia primarily played the second unit in much of the 2nd quarter. I understand that Blair was missing a couple of their key players. For those of us that enjoy watching high school football, it is not fun for either side to watch such a mismatch.

Hopefully, Blair will improve their program this season and in the future…..it was not that long ago that they captured the league title. Hopefully, Monrovia will not overlook any opponents this year, as a result of this game.

  • Colt74

    Vike,
I’m sure that not one kid on the Blair team is crying about having the score run up. When you suit up you take the bad with the good. Back when dinosaurs played football we were beat by West Covina 56-0. It sucked but we earned that score. They were that much better than us. No one quit come Monday morning and the next week we practiced our butts of so that wouldn’t happen again. The players are a lot stronger than us fans are. Support them without question.

  • Another anonymous

Are you finished yet Fallin Vike?…. get some rest and blame the next team on running up the score on you guys. If you are from another squad then go root for that team and hopefully they will make a better showing than this Viking squad. Like Monrovia Fan said, it was not the best game for either side to sit through for the hour we did. You seem to carry a lot of anger in your speech about Mr. Maddox. He may need a bodyguard when he crosses your path. Take your pills and get some rest. Theres still a lot of football to be played.

Is it true that Blair’s Head Coach did not even show up to the game?

  • another anonymous

One other question? What happend to Blairs uniforms? not only did they look like they borrowed Muirs field but their uniforms were also Blue and Gold… where did this come from?

  • Realist

This is how I see it. You play to win the game. How much you win by is up to the coach. I am shocked that Bueno even remained in the game. I mean him playing slot reciever risks injury. Not only that but they were winning big. Heres my only question, why didn’t he just run the ball to bury the clock. I don’t think it was classless, but I think it was stupid. I mean, chances are Monrovia still blows Blair out even if they pound the ball. I wasn’t there, so I don’t know. But why would Maddox leave any starters in the game? Just from an injury standpoint.

  • another anonymous

Yea Realist you may want to stay out of this one as well. Nick Played 1 quarter and 2.5 Min of the second quarter and that was it. That’s barely 1/4 of the game. But If you or I went to practice everyday and worked our butts off to play on Fridays we would want to play as much as we can. Those players cant control what Blair Does within their practices. We did everything that a well coached team would do. I’m sure Tesoro’s Coaches didn’t look at their win over Diamond Ranch overkill. Let’s see what Arcadia does in regards to playing a Glendale or a Hoover team. Let’s take a look at your bench play by the 2nd quarter and then you tell me if Coach D is going to take out Legace or Carr so that their opponents can see what they have against your second team. Remember the score in the first quarter of Monrovia vs. Blair was 37-0 and the only other scores were made by our second and third team personel.

Coach Parks had an emergency out of state. Those who believe in the power of prayer, please pray for his family. It is serious.

    Another anonymous-

Our uniforms aren’t blue and gold. They’re black.

Like said last night, it was a hard loss. Time to look forward to South Pas next week.

  • another anonymous

Viking Fan, I hope Coach Parks situation gets better and I hope he is in a place where he can have peace with his situation from family, friends and even well wishers. Incidents like this put things like high school football in its perspective and reminds us all how important real life is. God Bless Mr. Parks and his family with sincere respect and gratitude.

  • titangrad

I think that Blair should pull funds out of their seemingly endless uniforms account and pay for some kids to go to their school! Blair seems to be getting new uni’s every year!

  • Blair supporter

Wow! A lot of misdirected anger…Come see a practice or come see the school (Blair) and you would see that Blair kids are very successful based on what Pasadena has provided them which is, well, NOTHING!! They are losing players left and right due to injury as they are unprepared. These boys stay at school until the game, no break, no food, no support from the school, etc. This is not crying, this is the facts. At the end of the day, they have overcome more obstacles than anyone on here could ever imagine. Have you talked to a player? You should,,,There is a story here but people would rather look down on them then help them. Well, this is your community and lack of caring now will affect you later. If they dont have any successful sports programs, what will become of these kids? You might want to think about that and do something!

  • Goldenarm

People this is not a good thing.

Blairs woes run deep and it is no fault of the kids who are suiting up there. If any of those kids were wearing an M-town helmet, even as a reserve, they would be having a dream season right now. Were they playing for TC, they would at least see a positive environment where their hard work shows reward and individually, they get better each week.

Blair’s football program continues to be praised and optimistic in July and August – and falls completely apart in September, year after year. It does the RHL and Monrovia no good whatsoever to beat them 57-0, not even as a “practice” which somebody mentioned. An intrasquad practice easily has much more value. Sadly, the school which produced the legendary “Blair Pair” looks a good candidate for termination of their football program. No area kid wants to suit up and be ashamed to mention he plays there. The hole is not getting shallower and I hate to see how degraded the program has become. It is time for a tornado to suck out everything that is there…and begin anew.

  • Blair is 2-4 just like Muir, and PHS. So get off their back.

I am a monrovia Fan… I was at the game and on the field. The monrovia Fans and coaches were respectful. The crowd did cheer for our kids early, which they must. But after the 1st quarter we were not hooping and yelling and rocking the house. The coaches were not running up and down the sidelines. We just did what we had to do. Monrovia is a running team. We had to work on the pass. after the first quarter…monrovia played their reserves. However, Monrovia has alot of sophmores starting. The coach had to leave them in to get experience. For them its only their sixth game on varsity. Some of the subs were seniors. They should have the right to play their last year ever suiting up. I did not like seeing bueno in there. He could have possibly got hurt. He is such a important player. That was risky. On the other had. Its his senior year…and he is 5-7 170 lbs QB. He is going to need all the states, highlights and pub to get to the next level. Alot of seniors around the southland are doing the same. In sports no matter who the oppenent is, you have the mind set you want to beat them 57-0. Everyone has to deal with that. Almost every school in the valley has taken one of those…its not how yo fall, but its how yo get up. Blair is alot better than they showed that night. They will play better next week.

    In Blairs Defense…
    1. They just played their worst game of the year.
    2. Monrovia is the best team in The west SGV. They beat arcadia 34-7.
3.They did not have thier head coach…that is big.
    4.They don’t have a home field advantage
    5. All the teams in Pasadena are 2-4 including blair…and all of the teams in Pasadena have taken lumps this season…and they all would have been good by Monrovia.

I say keep your head up blair, their are still football to be played.

Blair still has a bunch of talented young men committed to playing out the season; let’s support them. As for the coaching staff, thanks for your hard work, but it falls well short of what a successful varsity football program requires; it’s time for you to move on.

This is getting ridiculous…no more time or excuses for this coaching staff. New uni’s and no improvement, something is clearly not prioritized. These kids can be successful, with the right coaching staff, dont forget the 2007-2008 teams who had the same support if not less in place at Blair-differnce being coaches

It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Count me as an additional particular person surpr ised that you simply did notinclude pepsi to the ??worst??? l ist or perhaps acknowledge their redesign.Other distinct comments. The new Pfizer logo looks sloppy and careless to me. The blue clearspace around the wordmark is uneven. I such as the concept, but the execution is lousy. The previous one particular is tighter.I do notunderstand what you like far better in regards to the new Guitar Hero logo. The adverse area in between the letters makes it virtually unachievable to go through for me.As for El Banco Deuno, I do notget it in any respect. The line breaks appear entirely jarring to me and remind me of a logo I did for my s ister is line of crafts when I was about 15 (it was the word pollywogs??? on two lines, with a hyphen?- ugh). Finally, I would appreciate to view your l ist of Identities which can be in desperate want of a redesign. My #1 choose can be Verizon.
