Star Picks: Sick to my stomach with Week 6 picks

…The Stang Fan and I will go head-to-head this season, though I guess I don’t see what’s the point anymore….

Melendez: 13-4 last week; total 77-33-1
Stang Fan: 15-2 last week; total 83-27-1

Here’s what Stang Fan proposes our bet should be. What do you guys think?

If I win you’ve gotta replace that picture on the blog for an entire week, and in the new pic you’ve gotta wear USC shirt and a SF Giants hat, OR a silk-screened tee that says Stang Fan>Me.

If I lose, I’ll mail you a gift card to whichever restaurant you choose, for you Freddie J, and Aram.

Take it or leave it?

I was sick to my stomach. No, really. For the first time in almost five years I actually called in sick thanks to a notoriously bad food poisoning that practically sidelined me for the weekend, and then some. Not calling in sick in years is a streak I was very proud of, but if only I had such an impressive streak when it comes to Star Picks. I guess 13-4 ain’t all that bad, but it doesn’t bode well for me when a blogger is beating yours truly. But I guess you’re not all that surprised, anyway. I lost when I picked South Pasadena, Arcadia, Glendale and San Gabriel. Stang’s two wrong picks came when he selected San Gabriel and Crescenta Valley. This week brings us a Mission Valley League showdown when Rosemead visits Arroyo. No doubt the winner of that game is in the driver’s seat for the league title. Freddy and Aram will have a two-minute drill breakdown later today. I’m interested to see how Maranatha bounces back against visiting Cerritos Valley Christian … and will you look at that, two Rio Hondo League unbeatens going at it when La Canada visits Temple City. Huge wins by both teams this past week.

Sick to my stomach!, Me too! Muir will probably win out the rest of their games. They will not win a championship. The problem every year is that we lose preseason, everybody is asking for the coaches to resign. League comes we do good, go one and out in the playoffs cause we get out coached! Everyone forgets! Howard is a good” Mentor”, but if PHS can get a coach and a Educator(teacher) thats what we need! if any sport cant finish practice by at least 5:45 its a problem. what teams finish after that?(thats why I say we need a teacher/coach- the last period would be football. not waiting for the coaches to get off of work. Thanks for everything , But the Kids deserve it and they need to get their butts home so they can do their HOMEWORK!!!!!!!!!! do the right thing!!!!!!!!!!!

  • BigCat

The San Marino coach resigns just before the Monrovia game? You have to wonder.

    GO ‘Cats!

    shouldnt this be week seven?

Hey Muir Fan you have a great idea and that would be great if the school district could afford to pay all the asst. coaches as teachers but the real thing is that most coaches are walk on coaches that work a regular job and they make arrangments with thair employer to get of at 3:00 or 4:00 to help coach so as you can see unless the teachers at the school all become coaches that would never work.Muir would never allow 3 teachers out at 6th period and never 8 out at 6th period. one coach can not run the team by him/or her self. yes I said her there are some women looking in to coaching these days!

  • Mike

Do most of the blogers on here realize that most of the coaches that they see coaching on fridays coaching the kids do not teach at that school they are either certified walk on coaches teachers from other schools who come over after their schools let out to help out and coach.these people are just out there so that your kids can play sports and most love being out there to help there alma mater win or at least present a program. if it were not for the walk on coaches most programs would not be able to produce a healthy program. give the ladies and gentelmen some credit. I do not see a lot of parents going out to say thanks coach for your time I know you could be doing something else or spending the time with your family that you are giving to my son /or daughter. FROM ME THANKS TO ALL WHO CARE.

Mid valley dude. Derrick & Ellis McCarthy are the Hardest hitting guys in the entire SGV. That hit was just timed perfefctly for any db to hit the player hi, its a QB mistake. The kid just bounced right back up. Those top 2 players hit you you stay down and wait for the stretcher!

  • Parent

Mike, I am a parent at Muir and I wondered why there wasnt a 6th period football class. Do most schools not have these classes anymore?

  • mike

Muir parent yes some schools still have 6th period football class but it is for study hall or PE and most senior players do not take that class all the on the field things happen after school when the other coaches arive.

  • theRealdeal

anonymous bloger… the hit that LAGACE put on the poor kid from muir was hard and i was there for that game and he didnt just bounce back up he stayed down for a good 5 mins. ive been to a few games just to watch this guy and he kills kids. as a matter of fact arcadia got blown out by monrovia but LAGACE did decleat your middle LB (bubba i think is his name) not once but twice in that game…. sorry to say that a WR/DB drops DL men LBs and everyone else on the field!!

  • anonymous

Nowhere on the game film does it show Legace decleating Johnson. Try again!!!

  • anon

He seems to be good at laying hits on unsuspecting players. Let’s see some one on one head on tackles during run support

  • BigA

@theRealdeal The kid who got hit still had 17 tkls and a pic that got called back plus held on too the ball on that hit i think he was ok but i blame the qb more then anyone on that play S just did his job

CV is hosting Pasadena on friday. I read they will start a new QB (he played well in second half vs Muir) and the original QB will switch to WR. I hope the Dogs saw a blue print on how to shut down their offense.

  • The Stang Fan

Come on now, I know you got my follow up email. I got SG and Kilkpatrick…not Keppel and Marshall.

  • Realist

To all you Monrovia fans that feel the need to hate on the BEST player in the Valley-

How can you take any credit away from that hit??? And yes Lagace rocked Johnson. I watched it. With my own eyes. But that doesnt matter because Arcadia lost the game. But im just tired of people saying how he was a defensless reciever, or he was in the air. LAGACE CAME FROM THE OPPOSITE HASH TO MAKE THE HIT!!! That was not his zone. Therefore it wasnt the qbs fault because Taylor closed so fast. He was open but Taylor read the play well, and closed out even better. Just for the record, if you think he only hit unsuspecting players than you havent been to an Arcadia game. He is not afraid to come up and lay a hit on a lineman or a running back like most safties are. And thats a fact. If you don’t believe me, Burroughs high tomorow night at 7. You will see him hitting in this game.

  • Apache Joe

    Wait, wait, wait.

Lagace made a nice play. This kid still has a TON of work to do. He made one great hit, but his open field tackling is average. As a free safety, it is his job to be the last man standing, especially in the open field and get the kid down. If he comes up and makes a great play, that’s great. But when he misses tackles in the open field as they run up the middle or to the outside, that is even bigger in importance than the one hit he made towards the LOS for a 2 or 3 yard gain.

Lagace is a good player, but he still has a lot to improve on and I look forward to him continuing his development as a football player in the coming weeks.

Good luck to Arcadia and all the SGV teams this week. Stay healthy!

  • theRealdeal

Im goin to email the coaches at arcadia to get film on the game vs arcadia and place the film on YOUTUBE! johnson got sat on his behind! but that doesnt take away the fact that both are great HS players.

yes Lagace has tons of work to do to become a great college player but hes young and im sure the coachs he has working with him are moving in the right direction. Arcadia’s whole team is better from last year and they are still young. Big game for the apaches tomorrow but everythings gonna have to go right for them to beat burbank. hope i can make it out to see this showdown!
no other games in pacific league seem interesting this week
Rosemead vs Arroyo isnt as interesting as its making out to be! ARROYO is a better team in WHOLE.
apache joe… you being from arcadia shoud know that hits like lagace had on muir set the tone for games and im not saying that one hit won the game but it sends a message to the team! i agree that he has to work on his open field tackling but muir is gonna be the most athletic team he’ll see all year

  • muirfan1

mike, their is coaches/ teachers out their(if not look at the Buena Park coach) young / or old educated( TIP DUARTE Is cool) just graduated from college that played d-1 that would like to come back and ” Help” Muir has had a couple. Q b coach, but as much as I hate to put this! he was a white coach in a now thing! My take is it aint a black, white, brown, yellow, or whatever. If you cant get it done. STEP A SIDE. all the Coaches. This is the new world of the Internet that we are on. Fly the Job for A college grad that has played Ball, and wants to prove himself! MUIR ALUMI STEP IT UP, its not being mean. Its just time to pass on the torch!

  • ATown

Above, Lagace missed a huge 3rd and 9 tackle in the 4th quarter of the St. Francis game to get the ball back for the Apaches. (He is the first kid to get there on no.40 and did not wrap up) He needs to work on his open field tackling.

  • Way to focus and straight to your point, i love it. Keep up the work people. Dont let anyone stop us bloggers.
