Football: Think you can pick the All-Area team? Try it.

Making these selections are never easy. Believe me. One thing is certain: no matter how it turns out, someone will feel their player, son, cousin or nephew was left off the team. I wonder, would the process be easier if there was a player of the year, offensive player of the year and defensive player of the year? Whatever the case, this season has produced a lot of good candidates, which makes it all the more harder to pick. Have at it.

    Defense will submitted later.

  • Great facility now

Is Rosemead High scoreboard one of the best in Southern Cal? I heard only Laguna Hills and Rosemead have these type of techy scoreboards. That was great for city to give the district a major portion of the funding so Rosemead can have a state of the art facility for its students and for the community. Great for football, soccer and for track with the built-in timing track system and one of the best track materials. It’s great for P.E. class and sports teams and the community as well to use a state of the art facility. There’s even more parking and good lighting.

    GF,

I see you have no bias towards Saint Francis.

  • The Stang Fan

Every year I say how easy this should be, and every year reality slaps me in the face. I don’t care what anyone says, this is HARD. We all rag on the prep writers for missing this guy and that guy but it’s a torturous task to accomplish. YOU give it a serious shot without having YOUR favorite school littered throughout. Obviously, my bias just can’t escape me and it’s hard for me to leave some other notable Stangs out, particularly LB Denzel Talifero. But hey, he’s a young sophomore…in due time.

I picked a 3-4 defense, and I also wanted to put Taylor Lagace at defensive back AND wide reciever, but I know it won’t happen that way. And yes, I’m heavy with Muir, Monrovia, and SF…and I should have more Apaches on there. Btw, Maranatha was tough because their defensive stats aren’t posted. Without further ado, here’s my hand at it…fire away:

Im not going to pick all the players on the list. But I am going to make a case for two very good players. Myles Carr and Taylor Lagace. This whole season Myles only threw 4 ints. He went 137 for 200 on the year. Thats almost a 70% completion percentage. I have yet to seen a better all around qb. And now to Taylor. On defense Taylor had 25 tackles and 4 picks, not to mention he missed 2 and a half games. On offense he had 42 receptions for 650 yards and 9 tds. One more player that deserves to be mentioned is Victor Wei. This kid is a great lineback. He had 60 tackle 3 sacks and 1 pick. Those are all cif numbers if ive ever seen them.

Agree with you that Edwards is a great back. But when faced a real defense,Rio Hondo he gained a total of 74 yards and 0 TD’s His competition on the ground Charles Quintero ran for 257 yards & scored twice. Seems to me Charles is our rep from Prep League.

  • Big Daddy

    To: Purduealum05

Agree with you regarding Edwards but your reasoning does not hold water. May I point out my choice C. Quintero (Rio) out gained Edwards 257 yards to 74 in their matchup. And as far as your league or division
comparison…Please not Village Christian is still alive in division 6, a team beat by Rio division 8.
Let’s see who brings home a CIF title.
    Quintero should be recognized somewhere.

  • Purduealum05

    “Anonymous said:
AP Blake Edward Poly – all cif last year – all cif this year.”

Yeah, what divison does he play in???? 14???? He might deserve all area honable mention, but not player of the year.

  • Mr. O-Line

The best Center in the Valley is Monrovia’s Dean Bisterfeldt. He was 1st team RHL last year and will win Lineman of the Year this year. He should be on the All-CIF team for the Mid-Valley. He handled Worthy in last year’s semis and has had a flawless Senior year. Do you think that having to block Ellis McCarthy everyday has benefited him?

  • There can be only one MVP…and That’s Nick Bueno, Monrovia

I think there should be only one MVP when it comes to ALL AREA. All Cif can have two Mvps. Don’t get me wrong..A defensive player can be th “MVP”. Defense is a must. Historically, offensive players get the nod. Even when you another guy who could be a CO MVP, you still can critique even more to get the best guy. There are 3 phases of the game. Offense, Defense, and Special teams. Traditionally the MVP hase been a player that has excelled in two or more phases of the game. And is also the best player on the Field, in every game! Its more than just numbers…its a players presence, how much a team game plans against him. How valuable is he to his team. Basically is he in everyones conversation. For Example, Didriech Riley was the man! He was without a doubt the best player on offense, defense and special teams. Thats all three phases. Nick Bueno is the best all around player this season. He has rushed for over 1300 yards and passed for over 1300 yards, caught 2 tds. He has Accounted for over 30 tds. He is the best punt returner, and has over a 41 yrd punting avg. If monrovia needed a big defensive stop, this kid would be in at DB. He has two of the three phases on lock. Bueno week end and week out is the best player/Athlete in the game. Despite being 5’8 170, he get’s it in. If you put him on just about any team, he would be on the field in some capacity. The kid is just a baller.I am being unbiased as I can. There is not another player close. I love Ellis McCarthy, a absolute beast, But maybe next year. Elfers is great, Lagace is Great! But none of these players are absolutely in everyone’s conversation. MVP is easy. Don’t split it up. Give it to the man. Nick”the goods” Bueno!

  • the people

for punter i think that kid from La Salle. Stephen Wright im pretty sure. he has done very well. he has over 1500 yrds punting and has 10 inside the 20 and longest punt is 60 yrds. and is a very good place punter also.

  • Realist

I hate to break it to you Marantha fans, but Andrew Elfers is not even close to being as good as Bueno or Carr. Its the truth. Carr has played some very very good defenses. Bueno played a very tough pre season schedule. Elfers has not seen a really good defense in his career. I love Elfers, he’s a good friend of mine. But afterall, I’m a realist.

And I don’t see how Coach D will not win COY. He got his 100th win this year. Not only that but he made a great team out of his 2-7-1 season last year. No other coaches have done anything close to that.

    Big Aaron-

If you think all those Muir players deserve to be all CIF you are crazy. This is not a time to express your favoritism for muir.

    stats are real-

It does not matter what kind of offense you run. A good receiver is a good receiver. Every single offense passes the a fair amount. The stats on these receivers tell you everything you need to know. If a receiver only has 30 receptions, that alone will tell you what kind of receiver they are. Receivers are different. They are used different ways in different offenses, but a receiver needs to catch the rock. If they don’t catch the rock they don’t deserver to win any awards.

  • stATS are real

realist- are you kidding me? every wr drops balls it happens no one is perfect…. but if an offense passes 11 or 14 times compared too 24 or 30 times thats the diffrence!

  • Prep Football Fan

    Realist,

I dont think Elfers needs a friend like you! Realist= Ignorant! Sophomore QB with poise, speed, and accuracy. He is running the #1 offense in the section. Give your head a shake. Frankly it makes you look stupid.

the people… ive seen wright punt once this year when la salle played maranatha. his kicks were not good at all. the reason he has so many yards punting and kicks inside the 20 is because his team cant score! theres a reason they went 0-10.

  • el tigre

Yeah we’ll see how good Maranantha is this week

  • Witness

    Big Daddy,

You were at the game. Don’t downplay Blake Edwards effectiveness vs Rio Hondo Prep…. 74 yards rushing were on only 10 Carries (7.4 yards a carry) and 153 receiving yards were on only 4 catches (39 yards per catch)….and two touchdowns. A third touchdown was nullified by a penalty. Your post made it seem like RHP had him contained all night!

I’m seeing a ton of posts like these now that the the holiday seasons are coming closer. :)

  • Nick Bueno for MVP. Elfers is the all area QB.

@realist, I am a Monrovia fan. Nick bueno is the best athlete in the Valley this year. He is such a talented athlete, he can play the QB position or basically any position. Nick on the next level would be a great scat back/wild cat/ special teams return guy. However, Elfers is soph and the best QB prospect in the west sgv today and the whole sgv in the next few years. He is better than Miles Carr. If you put him on Arcadia, imagine him and lagace. Throwing for 3000yrds is hard to do period. Have you seen the stats of his WRs? He is slinging the ball around the yard bro. He has more yards than Livingston, Rivera, Bueno, and Bernadski. They all play in the same division. Besides Remember the olympic league still has 3 teams in the playoffs, So don’t say he did not do anything against good teams. its a shame that some people can’t see talent, even if it feel out the sky and wiggled on their face. Elfers will get verbal offers next season. He is going to a big school. Thats is real as it gets!

  • A Real Fan

IF MUIR AND MONROVIA PLAYED,WHO’S THE WINNER?????????

  • Monrovia vs Muir

If Muir and Monrovia played, I would say monrovia. But that answers depends whether Muir was healthy when Arcadia beat them. Monrovia practically shut out Arcadia. Muir lost to them. Both teams are fast. I think muir may have a few more athletes. I think Monrovia would beat Muir up front. Ellis McCarthy and the d line would be hard block. The monrovia offensive line is great too. No Matter what it would be a game! Thats is a game that should be scheduled. Right now the west sgv rankings would look lik this if the season ended today.

    1. Monrovia
    2. Muir
    3. St Francis
    4. Arcadia
    5. Maranatha
    6. Rosemead

  • Realist

    Big Aaron-

I didn’t understand your last post. But there are two Muir players that actually deserve all CIF. That is Karl Holmes Jr. and Kevon Seymour. Bottom line.

    Prep Football fan-
What was ignorant about my last post? Myles Carr is playing teams like Muir, St Francis, Monrovia, Burbank, Burroughs. Bueno is playing teams like San Dimas, Glendora, Arcadia. Andrew Elfers plays teams like Village Christian, and Whittier Christian. There is no comparison. The Olympic League has 3 teams left because there is not much talent in Division 48. Sounds like your the ignorant one. The numbers that Carr and Bueno put up against very tough teams are more impressive than an Olympice League that puts up big numbers.

And yes, I am his buddy. We grew up together. He is a great kid from a great family. But like I said, facts are facts.

And yes, Muir was completely healthy when Arcadia beat them. It was the first time in the season they played with their whole team.

  • Anonymous

who cares about all-area the stangs just want to win. and muir is a waaaaayyyyyy different team now than back when they played arcadia and if they would’ve played now the game would be waaaaayyyyyy different too.

  • Monrovia speaks the truth….regarding All Area WRs

This years WR/DB all area selections are going to be most interesting. I seen alot of people throw Their favorites. I’m am going to clear this up now. There are many 2nd team scenario’s. Since we have a few guys who go both ways, Miguel has the freedom to mix it up. The guys listed below will make the Star news team rather it be on D or O, or 1st or 2nd team. Nelson is a great Second team selection! Their is no way he is better than my top four. For example, 200yrds and a 3 Tds are not enough to put him over a lagace, Holmes, Tailanko. Now the closest person he could have bumped was Jones. Their states are identical, but Jones did it against a better league schedule(3 olympic teams still in the playoffs), He got his yards dispite 3 others have almost 600 yrds respectively, and the are in the 2nd round(great case for Elfers huh?) Outside of Monrovia every secondary in the Rio hondo was weak. Nelson had 4 tds vs San Marino, 2 tds vs Blair, 2tds vs Glendale. Over 100 yrds vs Monrovia, but 0 tds. Nelson could have made it with 1000 yrds and 14 or 15 Tds. See you have to perform well enough to force peoples selection. Villalobos(6th Best) falls into the same category. Both excellent WR’s, but they are not tops. If he would have had a few more tough games maybe. This is how you break down a players performance. The kid Nelson is still good though(5th best). That’s why I don’t even have any of our Monrovia WR first team.
The first team wr core is set in stone. However There are guys who play both ways. As I have stated earlier a perfect example would be Lagace. He could be all area DB, but he won’t get both(he will get WR). Also remember players still in the playoffs have a advantge to impress Miguel. They can still add to thier yard total, and they will be producing when it matters most, and if they bring home a title well…they should be recognized. So you could see a player get the nod, if he explodes in the next 3 weeks.

  • QB rankings in the SGV !

@Realist Since you are talking down Mid Valley teams, I am going to Destroy your Myles Carr argument. No Offense Myles, You are a good player. But people like Realist put you under the microscope! Realist be careful about belittling a lower division teams. Arcadia would not win the Midvalley, because they can not beat Monrovia! Lower division do have less talent than upper division teams, In The Mid Valley division there are some teams who are very good. For Example, Monrovia Blasted Arcadia and nearly shut them out. Its true arcadia was better later, but so was Monrovia. Covina beat the team(West Co) that is going to win Arcadia’s Division and held them to under 30pts. They also beat San Dimas, the only Mid Valley team who has beat Monrovia in 2 years. So you can not down Elfers Stats to Make Myles Carr look better than he is. He is not first or Second team. Since you want a ranking, Here is How the QBs in the West SGV rank up

    1. Bueno(Monrovia) over1300 yrds rushing and over 1300 passing over 30 tds”still playing and destroyed arcadia last two seasons” Star News MVP, all Encompassing All purpose player 1st team. Offensive player of year in Division, Rio Hondo league MVP.

    2. Elfers(Maranatha) over 3000yrds passing 250 yrds rushing 39 tds “Still playing” Star News 1st team, 1st or 2nd team all League if Anderson gets 1st team, 1st team all league. Won’t Get all Cif because of Bueno and Livinston.

    3. Nelson(St Francis) over 2400 yrds passing 58 yrds rushing 29 Tds “at home, but beat Arcadia” Star News 2nd Team, All league 2nd team. Won’t get all CIF.

    4. Carr(Arcadia) over 1500 yrds passing 82 yrds rushing 26 Tds”at home, but beat Muir so he gets nod over Davis” lst team all league.

    5. Davis( Muir) over 1500 yrds passing over 200 yrds rushing 14 tds, He sat out 2 games too. “Still playing, but lost to Arcadia Carr gets the Nod”

6.Bernaski(South Pas) over 1500 yrds passing 182 yrds rushing 16 tds “at home, does not have the team Carr has” 1st team all league since Bueno is MVP.

    “Bonus info”
Livingston(Covina) over 2600 yrds passing 51yrds rushing and 24 tds.” Still playing and beat West Co” In the Running for All Area QB in the Tribune, Battling Friday with Anderson(Whittier Christian) For All CIF Selection at QB In Division, Valle Vista MVP.

Anderson(Whittier Christian) over 2400 yards passing over 500 yrds rushing 30 tds. All Daily News 1st or 2nd team. Will go head to head Friday with Livingston(Covina) for All CIF friday. Battling Elfers for all
    league 1st team.

    Other QBs in the SGV
    Kessler(Claremont) Over 3000yrds Passing 37 tds
Santiago(Charter Oak) Over 2400 yrds Passing 21 Tds
    Jefferies(Glendora)D1 San Diego State
    Rivera(Arroyo)over 1900 yrds passing 21 Tds
    Johnson(West CO)over 800 yrds passing, over 500 rushing
Rodriguez(Baldwin Park) over 1900 yrds passing over 500 rushing
Cantu(Schurr)”Mid Valley” over 2500 yrds passing

I just like to be thorough when I break things down thats all. I am not a Carr hater, I am just saying there are alot Qb’s in the Mid Valley and Both Sides of the SGV.. He is somewhere in the lower Middle . He is a notable, but in no way he is in the top.

  • Realist

I respect your opinion. Ive been watchting Myles since he was a freshamn. I have only seen 1 qb better. Thats Bueno. But Bueno is not what I like to call a true qb. He is more of a runner. Hes got a decent arm but hes got great speed. Myles is more of a pocket passer. Great arm and great accuracy. Imagine if Myles ran the spread like Elfers. Myles would have just as many passing yards if not more. Im not saying hes not good because he is. Im just making a case that Myles is arguably the best true qb in the area.

  • TigerFan

Nelson from south pas deserves to be on first team without question. First off, south pas does not run a spread such as Maranatha just because they don’t have the depth at receiver that Maranatha does so the fact that he has 46 catches shows he dropped (yes he dropped the one big ball at the opening of the Monrovia game but other than that a drop was a rare occurrence)very few balls throughout the whole season. Also, SP sports a 1000 yard back in Martin, something that Arcadia, Maranatha, and Muir have not achieved yet. This shows that SP is primarily a running team making it an even more outstanding feat for Nelson to collect so many catches. Consider all of this when formulating your lists.

Once all of the stats have been finalized, people will be able to pick their all area team a litte bit easier.

All you guys opinions are great but if you guys dont have #15Denzel Talifero you need to change your brackets he is a sophmore for (muir) whose been startin since that first game and has demolished the run game in all run teams such as (Burroughs) and (La Mirada)
I think he deserves another look

  • Anonymous

not that it really matters that much, and i know that its spelled “elfers” on maxpreps and the papers and such, but drew’s last name is correctly spelled “elffers” with two f’s not one.

    Big Daddy
I like Quintero. But there is no comparasion between edwards and him. Edwards made Quintero look really bad in the open field several times in that game. Quintero had 31 carries for his yards for his 257 and Edwards had only 10 carries. When you include Edwards’ receiving yards which are basically long hand offs via screens or swing passes out of the back field Edwards had 231 yards on 14 touches (10 carries and 4 receptions) – Quintero had 1 catch for 2 yards – Edwards averaged almost 40 yards per catch. So Edwards had 14 touches for 231 yards and Quintero had 32 touches for 259 yards. Edwards averaged double the yards per touch (16.5 yards) to Quintero (8.1 yards). And several time making Quintero look falling down bad in the open field. That being said I think Quintero is a great player but it is really the difference between having Reggie Bush (Edwards) and Lendale White (Quintero). Also in rushing Quintero averaged only 0.5 yards per carry more than Edwards. Edwards should be the MVP of the Prep League. That being said Poly doesn’t push it players forward the way Rio does and there is always a natural Rio bias against Poly. So I am sure the Prep League MVP will be Quintero even though it should clearly be Edwards.

Very good argument. Let’s hope we see these two in the finals. I do feel Poly’s QB helps Edwards and Rio’s sophmore QB isn’t there yet. Let’s hope Poly does not have to do a 530 mile roundtripper to beat Bishop. Maybe Chadwick can knowkc Bishop off. I do not see them playing anyone very good during the season.
Too many good kids to half to pick one in many categories.

  • Anonymous

Yep Poly’s senior QB is very under appreciated.
Their back up QB who is only a junior is excellent too.
Rio’s sophomore QB will only get better and is not too bad right now.
Let’s hope to see a rematch of that excellent game Rio – Poly Prep League game for the championship in a couple of weeks.

    Anonymous and Big Daddy

I’ve played the last 4 years against Rio Hondo and Poly and I have to admit Quintero is a better back than Edwards. Quintero is much harder to bring to bring down and if he gets around the corner he’s gone. Edwards is a great back too but through my experience playing against both of them Quintero is better.

  • Anonymous

    Anonymous,
I have played against both for the last four years including this year. When they were freshman and sophomores Quintero was better than Edwards, which is due to the Kares tackle program that begins at an early age. As juniors and seniors Edwards is much better and there is no comparision this year. Quintero is still the tough runner as he always has been but is easily caught from behind. Several back is the league are much faster. It even seems like he is not as good as last year. We never caught Edwards from behind. Poly embarrassed us and for the first time in my three years I thought Rio was easily beatable – but as we all know it is hard to win when you play at Rio. All good teams find that out and it well known in the Prep League – TDs get called back and weird penalties at the worst time. This is the first time Poly has had substantially more talent than Rio in years. It won’t be that way next year and even we will have more talent than Poly. But Edwards is the best player in the Prep League by far and Quintero is the second best. As the post said before we know Rio will push harder and Quintero will be the Prep League MVO even though it should be Edwards.

Michael Arkfeld from La Canada deserves a look. He had something like 6 interceptions this past season and was a big play maker. He is quick and he has a lot of natural talent.
