Star-Jibber: Monrovia to possibly add bleachers ….

Never seen Monrovia with a more dominating performance than last night at San Dimas High. Several parents sitting in front of us kept saying Monrovia only had Nick Bueno, but it wouldn’t take long to find out that the Wildcats truly are loaded with depth, from Jay Henderson and Christian Blanco to Derrick Johnson, Anthony Kraft and Mason Bryant, who was a beast making seamless transition from offense to defense.

Some of you were concerned about not enough seating at Monrovia for next week’s CIF-SS Mid-Valley Division championship game against Whittier Christian. So, I went to the source and got some answers from one of the area’s best principals and big sports fan, Darvin Jackson.

Jackson said the school’s exploring options to add bleachers and increase parking. Jackson said the bleachers may be added at each end zone, but they will have to talk with the company that installed Monrovia’s synthetic track and find out if adding bleachers on it would void the school’s warranty.

Monrovia’s home side, which holds 2,500, saw only one sellout this season, which was during the Wildcats’ homecoming game. Jackson said the school that insted the visiting stands has in the past installed bleachers on rubber track, adding that it’s caused no damage.

Jackson also said the school is negotiating additional parking at Tom’s Burgers on Foothill and Madison Ave. They’re also talking with other local joints about using their parking space, each lot housing 30-40 cars. They are also talking to CVS about using their lot, and, if so, will bus fans from the lot to the stadium.

Some of you were concerned, but as you can see Monrovia’s one step ahead trying to make it easy for you all.

  • Aaron

Would a Citrus double header be cool? Southeast on Friday and Mid-Valley on Saturday?

  • mtownalum

Cosign with the comments about Mr. Jackson. He is definitely an integral part of leading the campus towards success.
It only seems fitting with the direction the program and campus is going, that if the ‘Cats win their first CIF championship that it is on the opening season playing on new stadium.

  • Anonymous

MHS Stadium hold 1500 not 2500. Like the Citrus double header idea.

  • Grim Reaper

Citrus is a good idea, second the motion. They hosted playoff games last year also. You would have lots of space there.

For that matter, Glendale High has a big stadium with plenty of capacity on both sides and concessions on both sides too! It was less then half full for the holy war last Friday.

  • How about APU ?

Monrovia should play at home! Adding stands would be a good Idea. It would encourage fans to get there early, and ensure a packed house. It would be an exclusive ticket. Standing room only. Even though citrus will hold more people, Monrovia and Whittier Christian still would not sell out that venue. Then the stadium looks have empty, even though there are more people there. APU would be a great venue instead! Its nice its smaller, so you get the atmosphere. So you get everything you want and need.

  • Sick and Tired

Another Monrovia story, when will it end!

  • Sick and Tired

Another Monrovia story, when will it end!

  • monrovia mom

Sick and Tired: it will end about a week after Monrovia wins the championship next Saturday. This is for football only of course.

  • Yeh yeh yeh

Common sense would tell you to move this game to a bigger venue. The last big game played at MHS, against Rosemead 2 seasons ago was a nightmare…No parking & not enough seating. The visitors bleachers are so low you can’t even see over the players on the sideline…gotta’ move this game!

  • Yeh yeh yeh

…Jackson also said the school is negotiating additional parking at Tom’s Burgers on Foothill and Madison Ave. They’re also talking with other local joints about using their parking space, each lot housing 30-40 cars. They are also talking to CVS about using their lot, and, if so, will bus fans from the lot to the stadium…

    You must be joking!

  • Patrick D

Double Header @ Citrus would be great !

  • QuietCat

I posted this on the other blog but it seems appropriate here:

As much as a bigger venue would be great, I think that if you can give the kids a true HOME game than you have to. In a high profile game like this it can be invaluable to keep their routine the same if possible. PCC wouldn’t be so bad but Citrus just throws to many bad memories that to you or I may not effect us but to a High School kid can play games into their heads. They are trying to get quite a few extra stands at MHS for Sat. The best thing to do is just get their early. Its a Saturday… College is over… go and get an early dinner and enjoy the night. Its gonna be a great game!

Lets think about the kids who are actually playing, and the fact that this is for a CHAMPIONSHIP!

The atmosphere will be much more electric than if it was held at Citrus. We went to Paso Robles in 1998 and that was at Paso’s home field, you wanna talk about a great place to play a Championship game.

    GoCATS!

  • QuietCat

Also I just read on the SGVT blog that there is an event at Citrus Saturday morning as well

    GoCATS!

  • Anonymous

Tired of Citrus. Let’s keep it on the westside of the 605. PCC cut Monrovia a break and let them use your football stadium.

  • SpartanAlum86

I dont understand why any high school team would give up home field advantage. At that level the home field is huge.

I was at Monrovia hs for the schurr game, and it seemed plenty adequate. Get there early or go home sad.

  • Sick and Tired 2

Sick and Tired – It’s football season and they are the number one team in the San Gabriel Valley right now. What would you expect? I see other articles all the time. Don’t know what sport you are looking for, but maybe you should say so that Miguel could look into it. Frankly, I get a little “Sick and Tired” of hearing people like you complain.

  • Anonymous

Lets have it at home! There is plenty of standing room for people that want to support the Wildcats

  • Sick & Tired of Sick and Tired

“Another Monrovia story, when will it end!”

It will end when your team makes the CIF Finals

  • Realist

They have to move the game. The parking situation at Monrovia is brutal. It was bad when Monrovia played Arcadia. I can only imagine what the championship game is going to be like. I like the citrus and Glendale ideas. Both nice fields but Glendale has a bit of a parking issue as well. Citrus would be perfect. Tons of parking there.

  • Parking problems

The Arcadia game was a mess because you had people there for 2 games and a stadium dedication. Don’t think we will have quite as many there even for a CIF final. That was a cross town rivalry game between the 2 freshmen teams, as well as the varsity teams right after so there were all those parents/students and then you had dignitaries there from every city organization you can name as well as alumni, staff and people who wouldn’t ordinarily attend but voted for the bond and wanted to see the stadium. Besides, if the school works out parking with Tom’s and CVS there won’t be any problem with enough parking. I’d love to see my tax dollars being put to good usage with a CIF game played in our beautiful new stadium and, selfish as it may be for Monrovia, what a wonderful opportunity for the seniors, who didn’t get to use that new stadium for the last 3 “home” games of the year, to play once more on their home turf.

  • QuietCat

Citrus is out of the question. BoHi also wanted it but its not available due to a previous booking that morning.
Citrus officials say it would not be ready to host a game that night. Yes parking is going to be horrible, but do come late. Bottom line get out early and get your spot before early outs, that’s the only guarantee.

    GoCATS!

  • John Wayne

After how well M-TOWN played Saturday, they should make their way back to San Dimas for the Championship game vs. Whittier Christian…. HAHAHAHA
Talk about rubbing salt in their eyes.

  • Goldenarm

Although most schools don’t have the athletes Monrovia has, it is nice to watch as 10 or 11 “different” players come on the field as a kickoff team.
No doubt this makes for an overall better locker room.

Derrick Johnson, already a great linebacker, has raised his level of play even higher in M-town’s wins over Schurr and San Dimas. His reads, reaction time, and positioning…and his hits, just keep coming.

  • Title time in Monrovia!

Monrovia has made great football philosophical strides. This championship game will be another coaching battle and physical game. Anderson, the QB for Whittier Christian will be a handful. His go to guys Stanley and Escobar are good athletes. Monrivia is going to have to pressure on the QB and cover well. Anderson is left handed and loves to go roll left. Johsnon and Frazier have been hittig people, and McCarthy has been unblockable. The DB’s have made plays. If they can rattle the QB and create some turnovers, the Defense should have a good night.

On the Offensive side of the ball, the Cats will be challenged. WC is strong up the middle Jeff Worthy is WC version of ellis McCarthy. His a big guy who can play. He will be playing on the next level. They have 3 big LBs who hit, and they also have some good DB’s as well. Monrovia is going to have to mix up the run and pass. They do have More athletes than WC. They will need to maximize that advantage, get some one on one matchups on the outside . Bueno must take what they give him. Don’t try to do too much Bueno. We were very happy with him getting 8-10 yard srcambles. That means we are moving the chains in other ways. I love Blanco and Johnson in the backfield. All that beef coming down hill, now that’s a real stampede. I love the WR’s beating their Men. Henderson, Williams, Craft, Bryant, Jackson, Wingebach, were all stellar against San Dimas. Who do you cover?

Everyone is saying that Monrovia needs to move the venue. If they can get seats in th Endzone, I say have the game at Monrovia. It’s Monrovia has not had a title game there. It would be huge advantage. Monrovia fans living in the City, would there early. Monrovia would have more fans in attendance. It would be a true Home Field advantage! What better place to win then at home. There would be about 2700 fans in a standing room only events. If you play at citrus, There will be plenty of parking, Pleanty of seats, plenty of empty seats. A championship game looks alot better when It packed to capacity. The only other venue that would great, would Azusa Pacific University. If Monrovia could play there, the stands will be full, and the stadium is nice! We will see. I hope it is at monrovia!

  • schalupa

Have there been any other ideas to bring the game to people like internet radio, local cable TV, video feed to another part of the campus where space is available? I’m sure there are alot of followers who don’t want or can not hassle the crowds.

  • Daryl Cummings

Class of 85 from Duarte (the rock) it would be great for the Cats to get their first Cif championship win in there new stadium . Go WILDCTAS

  • lee roy brown

lets have the game at Glendale, Monrovia’s Stadium is really bad, I don’t care if they have a new stadium,it’s still too small for the Whittier Christian crowd! I hope the A.D for Monrovia High does the right thing.

  • Goldenarm

If the endzone seats are on top of the turf, unlikely they will do it. I believe the turf at M-town extends all the way to the track at the end zones… and do they even want people on the track, let alone sitting above the turf?

If they OK’d the end zone seats, then you would need a different protocol for entering the area, meaning no beverages of any kind, like they do at Maranatha.

Like others have said, get there early, way early. Even at San Dimas, this was a good idea. Just ask any Monrovia band member, they were sitting in the weeds.
    They still sounded good though.
