BREAKING NEWS: South Pasadena’s Ed Smith resigns

Ed Smith turned in his resignation this afternoon and has stepped down as South Pasadena’s football coach. South Pasadena principal Janet Anderson will release a statement later today. Smith entered his 30th season at South Pasadena where he compiled a 65-96-4 record in his 15 season as the Tigers’ head football coach.

The battle shoot in the background. Basically a summary of his career right there.

Always a class act, Ed Smith was a good adversary on Friday nights. His teams were prepared to play… trick plays, opening drives, inside blitzes, great special teams.

He left a positive impression on all that competed against him and So Pas.

Ed, the players, coaches and colleagues all know what you put into the program. God bless you and watch over you on your path.

  • New York

Time for Glosta Coach to step in…you could say this is the Perfect Storm…

  • Campanario

Big M, I couldn’t agree more. The only thing I would add to the list is the trap play. Great proponent of it.
    All the best, Coach Smith!

although many people might criticize coach smith for some of his decisions regarding play calls and his record throughout is time at SP, i am actually going to kind of miss coach smith.

While playing for him, you could hate him one day then not the next. I realize now that he and the other coaches truly prepared me for the future.

Thanks Coach Smith and good luck!

Thanks for everything you’ve done coach, despite what anyone else says, only the players and coaches know truly how much effort you put into the program. Thanks for everything!

  • el tigre

Very weird that Coach Smith is gone. While I used to feel differently, now that he is really gone I wish him the best in the future.

  • PurdueAlum05

I agree with both of the anonymous comments. I played for Coach Smith and despite his record, he cares a lot about his players and prepared me for life after football. Thanks for everything Coach!

  • BigFatFan

Ed is truly a class act. you never heard a peep about inpropriaties in his program. He went out on a high note this year, with all three levels of his program finishing with winning records. tho I’ve wanted to see this change for a few years, i agree with other bloggers that I am sort of sad to see him go. now the school has an opportunity to bring is a true football mind and get this program going in the right direction. a foundation for the program was laid this year, now it time to build the house. Go Tigers, and good luck Ed.

I say SP should hire John Fonseca.

  • So Anonymous

Fonseca would be the WORST head coach for South Pas. He’s a bully who’s been in trouble for risking his athletes’ safety and for throwing a chair at the girls’ cross country team.

Good luck in all that you do with your post-coaching life Coach Smith, thanks for everything!

You’re probably some little punk kid who Fonseca benched because YOU SUCK! Fonseca is a heck of football coach and deserves to be the head coach. He knows how to motivate players and knows the games.

If you’re going to rag on someone, at least put your name out there.

After 30 years of service on the gridiron, it is a mix bag of emotions to see Coach Smith resign. As bloggers have mentioned, he is a class act that has run a clean program. He supports his players and coaches and the school’s academic standards. He leaves the program with a solid core of young, well trained, and capable coaches that the administration can choose from if they want. Best of luck to coach Smith.

  • So Anonymous

I’m not a punk kid. I’m a parent who’s seen Fonseca’s bad decisions in action.

South Pas may have some good assistant coaches. Fonseca isn’t one of them.

BTW, “class acts” don’t run Bull in the Ring drills. Ever.

  • Gloucestercoach

NY…haha I’m flattered, but I highly doubt my Freshman Football Coaching in Massachusetts experience qualifies me, it has always been a pipe dream to coach at the Varsity level.

As far as Coach Smith goes, I truly did enjoy playing for him. He was a class act and his knowledge of football was tremendous. I learned so much from him and he definitely prepared us for life and real world experiences…I’m never late to anything to this day because I’m afraid of “AA”…attitude adjustment i.e. up/downs and extra gashers…

Anonymous against Coach Fonseca….is Bull in the Ring that bad? I remember doing it as a player, I never used it as a coach but maybe it’s an old school drill that is frowned upon now…do others have thoughts on this drill?

I’m very curious to see where Coach Punaro and South Pas goes from here….As far as Fonseca, I remember him coaching the freshman when I was on Varsity, definitely a feisty guy, haven’t seen him coach since then which was more then a decade ago, so I couldn’t tell you either way if he’s a good fit or not. Maybe Coach Chi takes the reigns? He’s been at South Pas for a while.

And people wonder why South Pas sucks in sports, it’s because of parents like you that want their kids to be babied. You need a coach that installs discipline in his/her players and care for them. You obviously don’t know Coach Fonseca, so I wouldn’t judge him off of one scenario. I bet the girls cross country team were probably doing something wrong and deserved to get yelled at. People don’t go yelling at people for no reason. Maybe you should just keep your kid(s) away from sports because you can’t handle someone installing some discipline in your kid(s).

  • PurdueAlum05

I don’t think Coach Chi will take the job because of his kids, but who knows. I would like to see Coach Fonseca get the job because he has been there since 1997, and for the past 11 years he has coached the JV Football team. In his 11 seasons as the JV HC, his teams have finished first or second 7 times. I played for him along time ago, and yes he was tough, but he truly cares about the kids and installs discipline that has helped me out to this day.

coach fonseca yelled at the girls CC team for being in the football locker romm and talking loudly during halftime at a jv game. no idea why they were down there

  • random

    @So Anonymous

you have no clue what you’re talking about, Fonseca would be a great head coach.
You’re probably the parent of some kid who never saw the field, and are mad at Fonseca.

  • So Anonymous

The word is instill, not install.

Fonseca threw a chair at the girls (as he was yelling). Tell me they did something to deserve that. And, no, they weren’t in the boys’ locker room, nor were they being loud. Fonseca was suspended for a week so obviously, the administration didn’t think the girls were the ones who were wrong.

The biggest problem with your defense of his behavior is that you see his treatment of girls as instilling (or installing if that’s the language you speak) discipline. Those girls weren’t his athletes to bully. Imagine how he treats his players.

  • Anonymous

actually, so anonymous, i was there in the locker room when it occurred. he threw a chair at a locker nowhere near the girls and it scared them and they blew the whole thing out of proportion. this whole situation displays his intensity as he was this excited and angry when we were winning 16-0 at halftime

  • sCam Newton

The cross country girls were in the football locker room during halftime which the football boys use. Coach Fonseca told the cross country girls to be quiet and leave the locker room not only once but twice, thrice, then a chair @ a locker to scare the living day lights out of the girls. It worked; they rushed out of the locker room quietly.
The cross country coaches who were in the locker room with the girls could’ve and should’ve done a better job. Instead of the cross country coaches taking responsibility, the told administration about the chair flying. A bit of a lack of respect and discipline shown by the cross country coaches.

    Good bye Smith.
Why now after a winning season on all three levels?
Bull in the Ring drills are only for the strong and talented; not for everyone. A classic favorite drill of mine.

  • In the awesome scheme of things you secure a B- just for effort. Where exactly you misplaced me personally was first on your particulars. You know, as the maxim goes, details make or break the argument.. And that couldn’t be more true here. Having said that, permit me tell you exactly what did give good results. Your authoring is actually highly convincing which is possibly why I am making an effort to opine. I do not really make it a regular habit of doing that. 2nd, although I can easily see the leaps in logic you make, I am not convinced of how you seem to connect the details which make the final result. For now I shall yield to your point however wish in the future you actually link your facts better.

  • The very root of your writing whilst sounding reasonable at first, did not really settle very well with me after some time. Someplace within the sentences you were able to make me a believer but just for a short while. I still have a problem with your jumps in logic and you might do nicely to fill in those gaps. When you actually can accomplish that, I would surely end up being impressed.

  • BigFatFan

SP needs to test the coaching waters outside the existing inhouse candidates. see who might be interested from the outside and then decide. with the public support in town for program improvements, this is the opportunity to make the right pick, not just a safe inhouse pick.

i understand from my son, a player a the school, that CamNewton’s explanation of the chair throwing incident is very accurate.

  • Anonymous

scam newton hit the nail on the head with the cross country story

  • In this awesome pattern of things you actually secure a B+ for effort and hard work. Exactly where you confused everybody was first on the particulars. As as the maxim goes, the devil is in the details… And that could not be more accurate right here. Having said that, allow me say to you what exactly did give good results. The writing can be extremely persuasive and that is most likely why I am taking the effort to comment. I do not make it a regular habit of doing that. 2nd, even though I can notice a leaps in logic you make, I am definitely not convinced of how you appear to unite the points that produce the actual final result. For the moment I will, no doubt subscribe to your point but hope in the future you connect the dots better.

You are trying to say that Coach Fonseca disrespects his players and “bullies” them yet that is exactly the opposite of his coaching model. I played for him during my JV year and have never known anything except solid and consistent coaching. Even through my varsity years, he remained a coach that I had a strong relationship with as a player. He without a doubt cares a great deal about his players and teams both past and present. Yes, he is stern when he needs to be but what successful football coach isnt? Coach Fonseca is a stellar example of a couch that deserves everything that a head coaching job at SP has to offer.

This program (SP football) has been the laughing stock of high school football in the area. Most people who’s kids went through this program could not understand how the previous reign lasted so long. They almost always start strong and die like an unwatered plant as the season goes along. More talent has been wasted on this program over the years and it is head spinning. Thank God it is over. If South Pas hires anybody from Coach Smith’s staff as a head coach, they are recommitting to a failed system. There is a decent facility in place and a quality coach with no baggage should be hired. End of story.

  • I liked your article. I think I am going to have to subscribe. And good Topic.

Until this year, it was painfully clear that for many years at SPHS, there was absolutely NO interest in building and developing the football program. hopefully that is about to change.

  • SP FAN

I disagree in the sense that it was a 16 year slow painful blood-letting. It sucked the will out of the football community. It is hard to believe it went on for this long.

  • Anonymous

In early 2004, there was a tremendouse uproar in the local SP commmunity (aired out in the local press) over whether or not Smith should be fired. at that time, assistant coaches, teachers and administrators came to Smith’s defense, and the uprising was squashed, and Smith got another 7 season at the helm. the program’s combined record over those 7 seasons was 31-38-1 (three winning seasons in seven years).

My my, how time changes things. this time around, the groundswell started slowly and quietly last year, and with the coaching debacle this season against LC, it was clear to even the SPHS AD and administrators that it was time for Smith to resign. Here’s to clearing the air and bringing in some fresh face from outside the exising program.

The SP football teams of the past were built for the preseason opponents (Keppel, Hoover, Glendale), and two weak league opponents Blair and San Marino. with four weak sisters on a ten game schedule, its no wonder the teams of the past were not capbale of winning more than two league games. One recent season, SP started off the season 6-0-1, then promptly lost their last three league games to miss the playoffs.

“The SP football teams of the past were built for the preseason opponents (Keppel, Hoover, Glendale)”….not much building needs to be done to beat these three. This year, their combined records were 2-28.

SphS didn’t play kepple this year.Get your facts right before putting them out.

I supported the So Pas program for years. All sports not just football. One big thing I see is most of the kids don’t care. Some people might think there is wasted talent at the school. Most of the kids are smaller and slower then most schools they play. Get real everybody. This is what we have in this city. I think all the coaches do the best of what they got. The talent that they do have does go on to play at the next level. Maybe some day pee wee football will be back. Many people think this is the reason why the program fails. I have talk and spent some time with some of the coaches at the school mostly the football coaches. Each one of them do a great job of what they have. People go out and meet some of them they really are good guys and I would be proud to have my son be coach by them. Good luck SO PAS. AND GO TIGERS!!

  • Anonymous

yes, keppel is finally off the SP schedule (oh by the way, Keppel went 0-10 this season), but rumor has it that Keppel wanted to drop SP this season, not the other way around, go figure. this year (2010) we got a schedule upgrade wtih cathedral by default. so we have Maranatha next year (2011), to replace Cathedral. progress is progress, lets take it anyway we can get it, no gripes there either.

the assistant coaches at SP are great, lots of energy and desire to make the program better. these guys should be applauded for sticking it out through some pretty bleak years.

  • Does anyone know of a really good business to join? I am looking for the best business opportunity.

I have to agree REAL SO PAS FAN…

    A. Not having a Pee-Wee football league hurts us. Most players at SPHS never put pads on until Freshman year of High School. There is a huge advantage for TC and Pasadena and other High School programs around the area.

    B. Our School District is small and very tightly regulated. South Pas prides itself on being a very good academic school district, the focus has never been on athletics and probably never will be. The mentality is “When we win, it’s a nice cherry on top”

    C. Since our school district is so small, the talent pool is small. Even if we do have talented athletes they don’t come out for football for some reason. I know when I went to school some of the best athletes never played football and they gave every excuse in the book. Which means South Pas will ALWAYS struggle with lack of depth. Injuries are what have killed SPHS Football.

I honestly think Coach Smith and his staff did a good job with the talent that South Pas has to offer. We get a diamond in the rough every once in a while and REAL SO PAS FAN is right, they play at the next level.

With that being said, Coach Smith could have tried different offensive and defensive schemes earlier in his career which to his credit he did try to mix things up during the last few years of his tenure. We were running the same pro style offense and 4-4 defense for a while there…

Offensively I think we needed to run the Wing-T for several years now. Using confusion and misdirection and getting the ball into the hands of the few stud athletes on the team.

  • BigFatFan

Gloucestercoach: i agree with you on some points, like “we have no pee wee football team in SP”. yes, we start from scratch each year with kids in 9th grade, putting on pads for the first time. But our frosh and JV players hold their own for the first two years. So why is that? It’s the varsity level that gets consistently wacked.

I put that blame directly on the coaching staff. poor training and development of the kids, no strength program at the school, until this year team slackers just rode on the program to get a varsity letter, but most of all, the offensive scheming and in-game play calling was just horrible.

last year 2009, SP switched from its traditional offense to the spread-option offense. the only problem was that none of the offensive coaches knew how to run the offense, let alone the QB who was asked to be in charge of the offense. no leadership from coaches, no offensive production on the field.

the offensive coaching staff continually demonstrates a lack of ability to maximize the use of its available talent. this year, we had a quick and shifty kid with lots of open-field running skills (Harvey). but after the first few games, he got NO offensive touches the rest of the season.

In-game offensive scheming: there is one word for it- “predictable”. take the LC game this year for example: our basic offensive packages get stuffed by LC in the first half. does the coaching staff change things up in the second half? Nope. they just keep trying to run the same old thing. Finally, in the waning minutes of the game, the offense is opened up, spread, multiple receiver sets, no huddle, and SP moves the ball for one TD and nearly scores the game tying TD with seconds left on the clock.

Its coaching, coaching, coaching. to say otherwise is just an excuse that SP cant do any better. year in and year out, SP should be competitive with LC, SM and TC, no excuses. Finally, a change is coming, and hopefully it will be a good breath of fresh air.
