Football: How not to stop Nick Bueno? By punching him.

| | Comments (85) |

With less than a minute left in the second quarter in last week's second round of the Mid-Valley Division playoffs, Schurr was forced to punt after facing fourth and 4 at its 44.

Waiting for the punt was Nick Bueno. He caught the ball and returned it for a small gain before he was tackled. As he lay on the ground, a Schurr football player wearing jersey No. 32 began punching Bueno's right leg. The Schurr player landed at least two clean punches before getting up and walking to the Spartans sideline.

There were no flags thrown, but the poor sportsmanship was in full display. I knew that things happen when in a pile, but I've never in my career as a sportswriter ever seen someone blatantly stoop so low and disregard complete sportsmanship. Punch the star athlete to slow him down?

Bueno didn't complain. He got up, walked to the sideline for the play call and hussled back to the huddle. I asked Monrovia coach Ryan Maddox if he got to see it happen during film.

He did.

"They played hard, they're a good program, but, yeah, they're a little dirty," Maddox said. "They cut a couple of our kids. I don't know if that's coaching or if that's just the kids. I know the defensive coordinator pretty well. He's a good guy. You hate to see it. You don't want to see anybody intentionally hurt and you hope the refs protect the kids."

Schurr's roster doesn't list a player with a No. 32 jersey. Would I have published the kid's name to begin with? Yes, because this athlete showed total disrespect for the game, himself, his teammates and, of course, Bueno. I'm baffled as to how someone can do such a thing and seemingly think he can get away with it. It's not what sportsmanship is about, and it's not the way to slow down Bueno.

Moving on ...

MONROVIA SAW MORE and more pressure come at them last week as the first half against Schurr wore on. The Wildcats made adjustments, and it paid dividends.

"They were taking advantage of our snap count," Maddox said. "So in the second half we adjusted, gave them a couple different looks and got them to jump offsides. That gave us momentum."

If you remember, Schurr jumped offsides twice in Monrovia's first possession in the second half that led to Bueno scoring from 24 yards. Schurr suddenly became penalty-prone and little by little, the Spartans succumbed.

I BROUGHT UP the no-huddle concept Monrovia went into after playing San Dimas early this season, and Saints coach Bill Zernickow said he doesn't think it'll affect them much, if at all.

"No, because every time they look to the sidelines we're going to check on the defense," he said. "We've seen a couple no-huddles throughout the playoffs and regular season. It's a new trend, the new thing to do. Now, if (the Wildcats) were doing it at Oregon speed, that'd be different."

That Monrovia's limiting the amount of players going both ways will work wonders for the, Zernickow said.

"Because they're always coming in fresh," he said, "and it also allows them to get more kids on the field. It's going to be good for the program and they're able to maintain success. When more kids are playing, kids are happy. That's an awesome thing to do."

I’ve been looking for all-around in relation to this matter but men and women just put rubbish posts, or short meaningless article. I contain looked at a couple vids on youtube but it’s now the equivalent as reading a good post.

I'll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

Awesome!Angels abound!

I like the journalism relevancy of your website and it will a beautiful decent job of presenting the info.

Wish you Happy New Year! Thankx so much for this! I have not been this thrilled by a blog for quite some time! You have got it, whatever that means in blogging. Anyway, You're definitely somebody that has something to say that people need to hear. Keep up the good work. Keep on inspiring the people!

At night me and my writer friends went out to paint our names on walls, mostly. That was in the late 90s and Berlin (which was already heavily bombed in the late 80s Berlins wall was like a huge canvas) was maybe the most bombed city in Europe. Some crews got famous by having their crew names bombed in nearly every part of the city. Some writers got famous through style, others through reckless actions like painting on rooftops, 20 cm away from death (and some died).

The only difference is Riley was a D1 prospect.
All you Monrovia fans who think Bueno's a D1 prospect
well......NOT!
Great high school player NOT a D1 prospect...sorry!

People, get a grip. I don't care who you are or what team you are for, if a player intentionally hurts an opposing team player, by punching, not shoving or pushing, that happens all the time, then that player needs to be suspended...bottom line! And as for the Schurr player that had to go to the hospital, if it happens during a play, I'm sorry, but that is a differnet situation. That's part of the game. Once a player is down, you don't beat on them. And, yes, these sports writers tell it like it is and I agree, there is none better then Bueno. He is a class act on that field...maybe the next Payton Manning! So, get over it, stop complaining. Every game has its bad...bad plays, bad calls, but some of this is going way too far. At what point do we say, okay, enough is enough! Kind of like these direct helmet hits in the NFL and college games. Is it really necessary to let a player get paralized before it's stopped? Obviously, it was.
And, as for the game last night, MTown rocked the house. Will they take the whole thing this year...you bet they will. So, let the boys play!! And enjoy the show or don't go!!

Are you kidding me with this! As a parent of a High School senior (who does NOT play football) and a subscriber to the Pasadena Star News, the next email I write will be to your editor Miguel. Are you related to Nick Bueno? Has his family paid you off? Do you have a man crush on him? I have held my tougue for too long and if you do not start providing your readership with a more balanced presentation/blog of the Prep Sports scene here in the San Gabriel Valley, I will ask for your editor to get another reporter or I will cancel my subscription! This is NOT the Nick Bueno/Monrovia section of the paper but your coverage and the pictures are as if it is. I really thought the final straw came when you wrote an article awhile back about how some teams that do not get much coverage in Saturday's paper( because you just CANNOT stop with Monrovia!) you felt that some should think about playing on Thursday night for press on Friday and, to my absolute astonishment, you actually had a picture of Nick Bueno and some other Monrovia players accompanying the article! The opportunity to give a team who does not get much coverage a picture in the paper lost because you have a bias for a particular kid and his team is disgusting and shows your lack of professionalism to your craft and to every other kid who plays sports in this area. I do not believe you should have this job and I will let your management know my thoughts. I just feel sorry for the next group of athletes you report on, they better hope Nick Bueno isn't anywhere around!

just some football fan said:

holy crap!! where you really bored when you wrote this or just in the mood to talk a lot of nonsense?? This article made me sick...first of all there are sooo many things that don't get caught on tape. Second, monrovia's big baby huey came in to the sidelines and started pushing, shoving and getting in to the face of the smallest guy on the team. EVERYONE saw that on the visitor's side (probably not on film), no flags were thrown. But oh well, that was just one player making a bad choice in the heat of the moment. No spartan would ever claim that Monrovia's team is "dirty" or that coaches approve or encourage this kind of sportsmanship. What a joke. But in a way, the fact that you wrote such a silly article must mean Schurr left a lasting impression. However, hopefully the impression that most people recieved is that Schurr's program is one to be respected not bashed. Oh, by the way....unless whittier christian pulls off an upset, it looks like maybe the championship game was played in the second round.

billy gumbo, give me your email address and I'll contact you. Or if you know anyone on the Schurr's football team, ask them if they can help you log on to www.hudl.com. You're going to need a username and password. The kids on the football team should have this. Most of the schools are using hudl.com to view and review game tapes. From there they should have all the games that Schurr's coaches have uploaded. You'll find the Monrovia/Schurr game there and you can see it for yourself. But if not, seriously, give me your email address and I'll set something up and we can meet at a Starbucks or something.

Spartanalum86 and the other knucklehead,

Don't be making sh#t up. There was no late hit or spearing on your starting RB. I have tape of the entire game from two different angles. The tackle on Schurr's #36 happened 3-4 yards in bounds. He never came close to going out of bounds. It was a run to the outside, CB forced him to cut back in, FS had pursuit from the back and the SS was coming full speed from the front. As the FS wrapped him up, #36 was spun around, and that's when the SS came in to put the hit. SS hit him with his shoulder pads. #36 WASN'T down or out of bounds when he got hit. It was a clean hit thru and thru.

On the other hand the video of #32 punching Bueno in the legs was pretty funny. He didn't even try to hide it. Good thing he punches like an eight year old little girl. I guess #32 was mad at Bueno for breaking his ankles and making him plow into two of his teammates. It's on tape. Funny stuff.

San Dimas put a whooping on Maranatha BIG TIME! But I do know that that Maranatha team was starting 7 back up back up players (yep that's a purposeful back up back up) No depth and playing some kids in positions they have never played... especially having to use some pulled up JV kids.
It's no excuse, but at least think about that before opening your mouth. The nice thing about those amazing San Dimas and Monrovia's is they have the students and the large programs with depth at each position! Kudos again to San Dimas.
When either Dimas or MHS face off against Whittier Christian and lose, then all the Maranatha bloggers will be back on here and saying... "See we aren't that soft"`We played the HELL out of Whittier Christian and they walked away at their own homecoming going.... "Holy Crap did we luck out"!
Maranatha played at full strength in that game and it was that.... A GAME!
But once again, last week San Dimas was a total dominator! Good luck Saturday!

San Dimas win this one......again. They are just too much for Monrovia. Monrovia played 2 real teams this year....and lost both times. Snack time is over...no more creampuffs Cats!!!!

anonymous said:

The beginning of the article is about a kid name Rudy Duarte. But if we are gona talk about the foul play that occured during the game we should talk about the late hit that happened late in the game against number 36 Abraham Gonzalez from Schurr High School! As you said bueno was able to walk off a couple punches to the leg, but Gonzalez was speared in the back after a run that hurt him so bad he was forced to leave the game and go to Arcadia Hospital! So I understand how punching bueno after a tackle is horrible, but which is worse, a couple punches to the leg or a full forced spear to the back sending a player to the hospital?? Thanks for making Schurr look bad whoever wrote this, you are an IDIOT!

Football fan said:

Monrovia will score big points against San Dimas, if so....then the Game between Monrovia and Schurr was the Championship Game...because Schurr would easily go thru San Dimas. Whittier Christian is the next team to look out for. San Dimas played a cupcake team Maranatha....who the heck are they???? Monrovia 45 San Dimas 14.

No good comes of articles like this. I hate to tell you but there are dirty and unsportsmanlike plays in almost all high school football games.

The higher the stakes, often the worse the conduct, and the greater the disappointments. High expectations lead normally sane people to do abhorrent things that they would not do normally.

It is not just the team and coaches, but the parents and the fans. I have seen it time and time again in youth sports.

That said, good luck to MoTown my heart is with you to get the monkey off your back, even though I believe San Dimas will prevail.

I will be going to watch the Christians duke it out at Glendale, as I believe that will be the exciting game of the week.

To the dismay of SVG Rat I pick a Village SD final. With SD the champ. If I am wrong you have my permission to tell me, "I told you so".

I don't think San Dimas will come out more fired up than the Monrovia. 500+ Rushing was last week. This is this week. This is a Rivalry game. Well at least to Monrovia fans. They are going to have to match Monrovia's intesity. This is personal for the cats. There is no denying that one. Also San Dimas Fans have been blogging all week. Monrovia will need to win Big Saturday night. No Doubt about that.

Cat'86 said:

Why would they come out flat? After last week 500+ yards of rushing. I dont't think they will come out flat. The last (3) games they have moved the ball up and down the field. They are not the same team that we played back in September. The only taking is our own fans, I have not seen any SD fan taking much on the Blog. I hope we are ready for Saturday.

Anonymous said:

I saw that too! However, this nothing new in football. I do not advocate Dity play, but it happens. I don't think the Schurr coaches advised thier kid to punch another player. I am sure they advised them to be as rough and physical as the can be. I am sure they told them to hit Bueno hard everytime. Whether they took it too far, is on the players. I don't think that cut or chop blocking is dirty. It's part of the game. Especially if the cut happens on the snap of the ball. Be a "Athletic" and get off the block. Every so often, a player hits a another player after the whistle. It could be because they were moving too fast or maybe you get a late whistle. Highschool refs blow late whistles. Or a kid may be doing extra. The hit on Gonzales on the sideline may have been a little extra, but not dirty. I say, you must always protect yourself! Stay alert to whats going on. I would call Schurr a dirty team. They played hard and clean for 99% of the game. One play, one kid, no reason to go too far with this.

Monrovias "No Huddle" Is a good thing. But the issues I have with it, is making sure you get in the right plays all the time. We also need to speed it up. It also Limits us getting in the right personel. sometimes we need to utilize the huddle, for communication purposes. A huddle also makes it harder to recognize personel, formation etc... When you are lined up in fortmations, You can see who is where and the D cordinator can see the formation for more time. The bottom line is no matter what formation, we have to block and Execute!

I have a feeling San Dimas is going to be a little flat coming out at home. Monrovia needs to jump out to a early lead. Then hold on to it. San Dimas get stronger as the game goes on. As we have seen in the midvalley playoffs. Defense has been the key. Covina's D couldn't Whittier Christian. Azusa couldn't Hold Villiage. Maranatha couldn't hold San Dimas. Saturday night, Monrovia's D will hold! All the talk ends Sat night!
