Football: Good luck figuring out PSN All-Area team…

In my four years selecting the Star-News All-Area team, I have never been this tough a tme making deserving selections. If you don’t believe me, give it a shot. The Star-News All-Area team includes offensive/defensive players of the year as well as coach of the year. If you think there are slam dunks, I’d like to hear your thoughts on why.

I dont think anyone in the WSGV played better than Kevon Seymour of Muir the whole season and or playoffs.

Think about it he has been doubled team most of the season and was on an offense that really didnt get him the ball but he still manage to record numerous of punt return td’s and kickoff returns for td’s, not to mention he had at least 5 picks with a couple returned to the house. He scored almost every way possible only thing he didnt do was return a fumble to the house. he scored td’s numerous times at all these areas now if that isnt an MVP then i dont know what is. KEVON SEYMOUR ATHLETE MVP thats defense and offens…..

  • Questions for clarity…

Could you provide a list of all the schools that should be included in the potential pool?? I don’t exactly know what schools should be included/excluded. What I mean is, do you take all the Pacific League teams or do we exclude Burbank/Burroughs/CV? What about Rosemead/SEM/EM? Does that make sense??

Also, when do the all-league/all-CIF lists come out? That seems like a helpful pruning process.

  • ND Fan

Kristion Grbavac – Best Offensive lineman in SGV.
He was a three starter and Fisrt team Mission League lineman three years.

    Travis Talianko- Best two-way starter

  • Fan of the game

    Alex Villalobos- San Gabriel (SR.)

The senior wide receiver led the STATE in receiving this year with 1,978 yards and 22 TD’s. He had 2 games where he went over 200 yards and against Alhambra who was 9-3 he had 243 yards and 5TD’s. He was often double teamed and during the CIF championship game he scored 2TD’s. The whole second half he was double teamed against Monrovia. He started on defense as well and led the SG Matadors to the CIF championship game. He was also a three year starter. He was a first team all league WR as a sophomore and a junior and was the Almont League MVP this year.

Seymour is in the conversation. Here is the thing Big Mike, I understand Seymour is a all American, but Would you say that Muir is better than Monrovia? I understand, that Muir plays in the Pacific and the South East, and has played a tough Schedule. However, that’s Irrelevant because if Muir was in the Midvalley, they would have to beat Monrovia to win it, and Deshawn’s our Seymour. Besides Down the Stretch, La Serna kept Owens and Seymour out of the endzone. How, I don’t know. They were not very good and gave up 84 pts in the title game. Covina took West Co to OT.

    Monrovia 53 San Gabriel 14
    Muir 44 San Gabriel 20

    Arcadia 42 Muir 7
    Arcadia 30 Monrovia 22

Arcadia was really good. I don’t know what happened to them. However Deshawn Killed it in the playoffs and scored 2 times vs Arcadia and 3 vs San Gabriel. We Feel that he is as good as Seymour, on the Field. However off the field, he had some issues last year. I say Deshawn Ramirez was the most important player on the Area’s best team. I don’t think Monrovia losses to Muir, if the game was played tonight. Deshawn lead his team to title. I think that would be the Areas best match up though. Seymour had a 98 yrd int on the Same night Deshawn had his 100 yarder. I think the Ring is heavy. But I am not taking nothing From Seymour, he is sick!

I think the coach of the year award should go to RHP’s head coach Ken Drain

  • I got love for Monrovia but ya’ll can’t mess with Muir or PHS.

I was at the Monrovia game against San Gabriel and to be as unbias as possible. We have way too many skill players at MUIR & we have 2 shut down corners in Owens & Seymour. Deshawn is good but ya’ll don’t play anyone. Muir manhandled San Gabriel & sat their starters the 4th quarter. Villalobos went H.A.M on Ramirez & they only have 1 player at San Gabriel (Villalobos).

Sidenote Muir can’t play Monrovia for outside issues. We tried in 00 & 01 and it didnt end pretty. If Monrovia would stop being scared & join the Pacific League then we can gauge who is actually better. Macarthy had a real quiet night against San Gabriel (i heard his name 3 times). Bias won the title for Monrovia (4 or 5 tds).

Muir plays way better non-league schedule. Ya’ll toughest challenge was Arcadia. Yes, we got stomped by Arcadia but we also lost our head coach 2 days before. We stomped Burroughs (the team that destroyed Arcadia). You can lose week in and week out in the Pacific league. Monrovia plays San Marino, S. Pasa, Blair, etc (no competition).

When Muir played back in 00 & 01 it was split Monrovia edged Muir in 2000 & Muir abused them in 2001. So bad that the starting qb & rec transfered to Muir (Ryan O’Hara & Jason Martin).

I don’t think it would be wise for Muir to play Monrovia bcuz we got Rancho , Alemany to prepare for. And the whole team has been living in the weightroom & going super hard.

I think Deshawn is very talented but he would be a third or fourth option at Muir bcuz we have Kevon, Tairen, Darick, Denzel, Andreece, etc (all D-1 bound players). Deshawn wouldn’t have scored against Rancho or Saugus or PHS.

Here is a lil secret most of the team was sophomores & Juniors & freshmen. They are only losing Kevon & Tairen.

  • big mike

    Hoss Cartwright
Do i think Muir is better than Monrovia YEAH!!!!!! if you would had seen the La Serna game you would understand how he really didnt do much but he still did good and one of his touchdowns was called back.

Comparing scores never amount out to anything Seymour numbers are better than Deshawn and Seymour played against MUCH STIFFER COMPETITION. And when Muir played SG the score was 37-7 at the half Muir let up off the gas but still finished strong and the Arcadia game will Arcadia handled their business that week no excuses but Muir head to head against Monrovia it all depends on what Muir team show up if Muir A team against Monrovia A team Muir wins without a doubt, And if Monrovia comes out trying to man up and not double team then the game would look like Muir against D-Ranch. But Seymour and Ramirez are great players but Seymour is on a much higher level then he is and it wouldnt even had mattered if Ramirez would had played last year Seymour is a man among boys LS did a good job having a LB play inside bump and the corner 13 yards off with a safety on top but no excuses Muir OC kind of choked oh and their D-Coordinator well trying to stop a run game with three down linemen speaks for itself. (Dumb) I give Monrovia coaching but Muir athletes wins the game. Also most of Deshawn numbers came against SM, SP, LC, TC basically the riohondo LOL…..

    I got love,

I have seen both Muir and Monrovia play. Monrovia across the board is better than Muir. Monrovia would beat Muir with out a question. Muir does have a tough schedule but they get blown out in those games, so it means absolutely nothing. We found out that La Serna was very weak and muir got handled. As much as a I hate Monrovia they could have probably played in the finals vs West Co in the Southeast.

Common team is arcadia and muir was blown away like the recent windstorm by arcadia. It took arcadia a 4th and 6 pass late in the 4th to beat Monrovia

Muir beat burroughs when their 300 yard a game RB was out so dont brag about that. Arcadia did not get blown out by burroughs. It was close.

  • haha

    Delusional Muir fans: STOP IT!!!

  • big mike

By the way this was Muir coaches first year so expect greatness out of them next year im sure they will see where they fell short at and adapt, i forgot they have everyone back next year besides Seymour and Owens. I hope yall got a good look at D. Holmes jr. to the boy look like he eat weights and run on ice skates, do you see how he slices through defenses stops then go and end it with a toe step (a step in which the skater walks from one toe pick to the other), man the boy look like he figure skating out there on the field.

But Much respect to M-town no disrespect at all just my “Bias” opinion. Im a pacific league fan.

  • All day

Muir brought a whopping 12 fans to a CIF SEMI FINAL GAME vs La Serna. Great program!

  • the pacific

    All day
You really dont know what your talking about go check out the overall record between Muir and Burroughs and Arcadia muir owns them dude get real Monrovia wouldnt had made it past Santa fe or D-Ranch. SHUT UP LS played a good game like they said Muir is inconsistent But against M-town muir got the last laugh. then you say across the board better LOL….Muir actually has an all american to just like M-town, now lets go down the line Owens, (Washington) “Kevon anywhere he wants” you only can say “Ellis” i can keep going Telifaro offers from 6 D1 schools already who do M-town have ILL wait forget it ill help no one that anybody knows of. Muir got the last laugh and thats that, Muir owns burroughs who owns Arcadia and Muir has a winning Record against Arcadia do monrovia or is it a tie. get the hell out of here you d10 fools continue to play Blair oh which Monrovia has lost to a “few” years ago…..get real but i do respect M-town just not some of the idiots out of there congrats on your D10 back to back championship hopefully you get a bowl game against the 8 man league champion. hey if M-town ever fold thats their next step down because all the rest of their sport teams SUCKS.

Who cares about that fan write up it was payback for him to write that and read the article over IDIOT it was only about 12 fans left but if you look at the picture it was more than 12.

  • the pacific

And please dont start naming off players no one heard of outside of the rio hondo league. Denzel talifero will be on that list D.Holmes the freshmen will be an all american oh you heard of him man Muir never dries out of talent you M-town clowns come on the scene every so often with a good one here or there and dont use the street junk either our kids face that to. THIS BY FAR IS A POINTLESS ARGUMENT BUT IT IS WHAT IT IS im done with you clowns congrats on your season hopefully you move up and get pounded on in the pacific.

  • haha

    The Pacific,

Do you carry Muir players jock straps and their H2O around town? Just curious…

  • the pacific

    The Pacific,

Do you carry Muir players jock straps and their H2O around town? Just curious…

DUDE swear thats all you got, it took you that long to think up that weak comeback. OK look try again ill wait for a better one. But it is kind of weird that your “curious” about a homo activity, HEY!!!!! im not judging to each his own.

  • Please

Please, The Mighty Mustangs have been DONE 4 YEARS. You can’t even compare what you guys have done in the past 20 years to anyone let alone Monrovia. More Mustang talk and no Walk. La Serna did you guys a favor and didn’t let you face a West Covina team that would have put up 100 plus points on you in front of MIllions of viewers. Stick to track and field and girls basketball, because your football team is GARBAGE.

  • Child Please

Muir is not even good at track anymore. Arcadia has been owning them for the past 3 or 4 years now earning league titles. Maybe just girls basketball now, if that.

  • big mike

    Please
You say garbage LOL….Muir has sent out more D1 players in the last 4 years then Monrovia did in all sports. Oh and dont forget about the boys B-ball team they went to the championship last year and they beat Monrovia to that year. M-town against Muir is over rated you clowns continue to play lady ball and 100 points never against Muir CO fans thought they were going to blow Muir out but that didnt happen. The season is over these back and forth opinions are pointless. Muir has scholar athletes every year from boys b-ball, football, track and girls basketball to me that sound like a successful program dont you, if not then your about as dumb as they get. And WC great year Muir over looked LS and got popped in the mouth but 100 points not even close not even half against Muir believe me against a team like WC Muir would had played with much more pep. Not even Rancho could butter half of that up.

  • big mike

    Child Please
Oh your talking about team points how about individuals how many did Arcadia have in state. Ill wait and if you ask how many Muir well he finished top 5 in state last year_________CHILD PLEASE.

  • the pacific

Is it me or is you M-town idiots forgetting that Muir boys b-ball team made it to the ship last year, and beat Monrovia 79-40 this year and beat M-town last year 44-33 and finished 3rd ahead of Arcadia in league last year. And Muir had a state track runner last year and had an Arizona state signee off the football and well the girls b-ball we cant even count how many they sent out. But look at how Muir is competitive in almost every sport can Monrovia say the same thing H#!! NO!!!!! Their football team is d10 gods the last two years but its d10 step up and see how that works out better yet just ask CO how it feels. Oh and Arcadia does have one of the most dominate track programs around they field a lot of people to get POINTS to win duel meets WHO CARES ABOUT THAT.

  • M-Town will never be Muir

    Preach Big Mike Preach

Let’s be honest Monrovia always wanted to be like Muir in every way possible. It’s okay Big Brother still loves you, lol.

Monrovia fans can call there AD & ask them to set up the non-league game then. I got $1,000 that Muir will win & embarrass them.

Let’s be honest ya’ll players don’t want to play MUIR next year, lol!!!!

WE ARE RETURNING 18 starters!!!! How about Monrovia??? Don’t worry I’ll wait, lol.

When I say they are hungry come up to Muir after school & watch their new off season weight program.

  • Rh Fan

The Rio Hondo never gets enough love! Everything gets focused on M-Town and forgets about the other teams within that league that don’t get the attention. I’m talking South Pas (who put up a serious game against Monrovia), San Marino, and La Canada.

Gotta focus on LC for a minute. Easily one of the hardest schedules in the SGV. Going up against much higher caliber teams like Maranatha, CV, Arroyo, Alhambra and Monrovia. And, not to mention, a team that barely suited a legit 25 varsity guys at the end of the season.

Yet, RB/LB Kyle Herron still produced this year. As one among few seniors, he’s been a 3 year guy on the varsity team and has started all three years. This year he was forced to run behind a small, inexperienced O line and play on a defense that was primarily last year’s JV kids. So somehow as a 3 way starter (O, D, spec teams) he still is able achieve (defense) 78 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 INT and (offense) 353 rush yds, 77 receiving yds, and 4 TD. Keeping in mind that those numbers are coming from teams of much higher ability than LC, like what I aforementioned. And left him with Team MVP, and first team all rio hondo RB and LB honors.

I say there’s a spot on the all area for him. He’s for real. Getting looks from USD, Cal Poly Slo and some other D2′s.

So show some love for the little man. LC worked hard this year and deserves recognition to at least one of their strongest athletes

Nonetheless, congrats to the teams at Monrovia and Muir. Working damn hard till the end, it was sad to see the seasons end.

    - Rio Hondo Fan

  • Titan Sports Fan

I’m going to speak purely in terms of the rhl i simply dont know enough of the other leagues but Kwame Do would have to make it at RB if any rhl back was going to make it unless there are multiple backs from rhl that get on the list. I cant pull out final numbers SM did not post them on maxpreps but anyone who played SM knows he was the engine that made our offense run. And this is no disrespect to Marquise Bias from Monrovia who came on very strong at the end of the year but when your surrounded by the amount of talent on that side of the ball he wasnt seeing nearly as many 8 man fronts as KDO. At monrovia other teams this year had to respect the pass game and there weapons outside ….at SM this year not so much our passing game was hit or miss week to week. For a young man too bounce back from an unfortunate turn of events his junior year to have the type of year he had too being the guy every team keyed on this year when matched up against SM and continually performing at an elite level it should be noted!

Also no disrespect to LC RB great year as well but Kwame did it from week 1 all the way to playoffs…. and obviously a bit biased but to be even in the conversation for these players speaks to there talent level

  • Fan of the game

Alex Villalobos did good against all competition this year. The only team that really held him in check was Maranantha. Against Muir he had 10 catches for 118 yards and 1TD. Against Monrovia he had 12 catches for 160 Yards and 2TD’s. He may be the only option on his team but his stats almost quadruple Ramirez’ and Seymour. Take Villalobos off of San Gabriel’s team and where would they be. Not in the championship game. Take either of the 2 off their respected team and the same outcome for both teams is likely. Most of the time is was against double teams. I do no know how you can deny him this honor look at his stats they are out of this world. One of the best prep receivers in California. Here are his final stats of the year.

    26 Rushes- 201 Yards 1 TD
125 Catches- 1978 yards 21 TD (#1 in state of CA)
    20 Solo Tackles 8 Assisted
    3 INT
    1 Forced Fumble
    2 Fumble Recoveries
    3 Blocked FG’s
43 Punts (1538 Yards) Long of 68 Yards
21 Kickoff Returns for 665 Yards
    129 Total Points

How do you argue with that. Best stats in the area hands down. No one even close.

I find it funny how people like to live in the glory of the past. You sound like Al Bundy. And then you try to bring up other sports in an effort to knock Monrovia. We’re talking football, just football. Nobody is trying to be like Muir. “d10 gods” are you freakin serious?! You guys went 13-10 the last two seasons. In my book that’s slightly above mediocre. You are talking about the same Muir that got spanked by Burbank and then got limited to a field goal in the playoffs by La Serna. You guys might have more pure athletes, but Monrovia does more with less. Come on man. When’s the last time Muir made it to the semis. Monrovia 4 years in a row. Back to Back CIF Champs.

I’m stumped….the picks this year are hard. However, I will say that Blair High School should get an honorable mention/spirit award…they played the entire season with 16-18 players. Dedication and heart have to count for something.

Also, the boys at Duarte, including their coach “Tip” Sanders, are worthy of mention….they went from a losing, unsupported 2010 season to posting wins and numbers in 2011…they seemed to have found their footing after “Crutch” after all. They” make us all believers in 2012.

Just my two cents…..well, three actually, Seymour of Muir is the player of the year hands down.

  • RHP fan

As much as Dave Drain contributed to the championship team, I don’t think he excelled as much as both Jr’s Rico Perez and Sebastian Rosales. Both these guys definitely stepped up their game, especially at the pulling guard. Just a thought.

…ahhh!! Yes, I’m aware of the kid wonder in Monrovia also known as Ellis McCarthy….I wasn’t knocking him when I said Seymour was the player of the year, so stop sending me hate emails..of course, I’m biased…a little.

Seriously, Seymour and E.M. are both outstanding players; however, Seymour’s talents were exhibited in a variety of skills and duties on the field. E.M. (and you must agree) is a man amongst boys – he’s very talented…in fact, I’ll reserve my judgment until the Army All American Bowl in January – both are playing; the true player of the year will be seen. That’s the best I can do Monrovia High fan club!

Give some consideration to Sean Magill, South Pasadena’s RB/LB.

  • So why doesn’t Monrovia’s AD want to play Muir next year??

Muir lost to Burbank by 1 point dumbie. They only got smacked by Rancho & Arcadia.

Call ya’ll AD and ask him if he wants to get embarassed by Muir next yr bcuz they already declined the game.

  • BigMLover

Muir – Monrovia would be a GREAT game. Anyone that says otherwise is an idiotic homer. No one is ducking anyone. FACT: these ADs aren’t on each other’s radar.

    Fan of the Game,

May Allah grant you 1000 wishes. This blessing is because you actually put a TEMPLE CITY player on your All League candidate list. Michael Bassette. One player….what the hell is wrong with this picture? Oh yeah…thats right, we know what happened.

Just a couple season ago the PSN selections were stacked with Rams.
Max Ruckle – Co Offensive player of the year
Nick Conora – defensive player of the year
Ryan Watkins – D Lineman of the Year
Joey Stewart – All Purpose player of the year
Josh Ouelette – O lineman of the year
First teamers were many – Gianni-Bruno Lopez, Matt O Malley, Justin Sutton, Morgan Hatch, Steven Fei, Alex Dunn and others I just can’t remember.

It is as if someone turned off the football faucet and left Temple City dry.

  • PacFan

    6power,

It’s one player for every win…

  • BigCat

I can come up with a lot of Monrovia names, obviously Ellis McCarty at the top. However, one name that I want to bring up is DeShawn Ramirez. Yje kid was in deep trouble last year and he has now turned his life around. He’s both a top DB and a top WR. Pretty spectacular.

  • duh!!

Are you all stupid ?? Bias is player of the year hands down.

  • 6power

    Pac Fan,

    Thanks man.
Too bad we could not have scheduled Blair twice.

Not that I forgot, but this year I was reminded, DEFENSE IS EVERYTHING. It was the year of no stops and no stands. “Move the chains” was the cry of every Friday night. If you volunteered for chain duty on the TC sideline, be prepared for a cardio workout. Everybody, and I mean everybody scored 40 points on the Rams, going up and down the field at will.

Of all the things that Coach McFarland needs to address this offseason, DEFENSE is number one. Without defense there is no promised land and every bus ride is a silent one.

  • southpastigeralum

I second South Pasadena’s Magill for consideration. Obviously I’m a little biased being from South Pas, but the entire year he ran straight up the middle with minimal carries and an o-line that was smaller than him and still produced. In addition he played LB and special teams (I think) and had a sack in about every game he played that I watched.

Also from South Pas Justin Cornford put a statistically impressive year at TE. If you were to add a slot for TE he deserves some consideration.

Maybe not 1st, but if there is a second team these two deserve to be recognized.

STATS DON’T LIE: BEST D LINEMAN IS SHANE TIERNEY
Look at the individual stats when choosing the best players and not the team’s win/loss record or the recruitment hype.

Do that and you will be surprised…

Example: Based on tackles, the best Defensive Lineman this year is not Ellis McCarthy or some of the other names mentioned above.

The best Defensive Lineman in the area is Shane Tierney, junior, of the La Salle Lancers. His team was 1-9, but Tierney is second in the STATE OF CALIFORNIA among Defensive tackles in tackles per game with 9.3.

    Stats per Maxpreps…

Shane Tierney, La Salle, 9.3 tackles per game
Ellis McCarthy: 5.0 tackles per game
Carlos Purser: 7.3 tackles per game
Tyler Marona: 2.5 tackles per game
Robbie Haines, Arcadia: 4.3 tackles per game

    Case Closed.

I have seen Tierney play. He’s got my vote for Best D Lineman. Nobody has a higher-revving, absolutely relentless motor. Here is a link to his video. Check out the blocked kick. He had three of those this year.

    Tierney is #71

You CAN’T go on individual stats. Especially if your team went 1-9. And more especially if none of the teams you lost to went any further than the first round of the playoffs. It shows me that you went up against mediocre competition. Same reason you’ll never see a Heisman winner come from a team with a losing record.

When it comes to DL, stats don’t show the number of times a player is double or triple teamed. Stats don’t show number of passes batted down and number of times the QB was rushed to throw the ball to avoid a sack.

    STATS DON’T SHOW EVERYTHING.

STATS DON’T LIE: IT’S TIERNEY AS BEST DL LINEMAN
Red, I don’t want to take a lot of space here to be fair to everyone, but let’s take just one performance. Would you consider Pasadena to be a mediocre team?

Tierney terrorized QB Brandon Cox all night, sacked him twice and knocked him down a third time on his way to 12 tackles in the game.

I agree stats are everything (although you can’t ignore linebacker-type tackle stats from an interior lineman, no matter what the team record says). But forget stats for a minute, and look at Tierney play in film against Pasadena (heck, look at him in any of those Hudl films) that Anonymous put in his comment and decide.

    Happy Holidays, Everyone

Sadly, yes. Pasadena was mediocre this year.

    Happy Holidays!!

Wait a minute! Regarding Tierney from LaSalle; I saw him a month or so ago in the Pasadena Star News as Athlete of the Week…soooo I believe that blows the theory that a losing team cannot have a star player out of the water. I also have a son play for LaSalle and I watched Tierney be double and triple teamed on almost every play during every game. On another note, Tierney played O and D as well as PAT and FG attempts. Tierney should be on the All Area Team without a doubt. Tierney is a Jr., so watch out for him next year as well.

  • Red Leader

Whoa Ann! I NEVER said a losing team can’t have a star player. We were talking about best defensive lineman in the area, NOT athlete of the WEEK. There’s a big difference there. So no, nothing’s getting blown out of the water here. Tierney is a fine defensive lineman and deserves to be on the All Area Team. But when you start telling me that he is better than McCarthy of Monrovia? Then you’re just delusional.

  • Ann-Marie Tierney

Never said he was better than McCarthy.

Pasadena junior offensive lineman Freddie Barnes did well this season. He only gave up 5 sacks on the season and he only played 8 games. with him the bulldogs went 5-3. He also hasn’t played football sense his freshman year
