Star-News Pick’em: Who wins, Monrovia or St. Francis? I like the Knights

Keith Lair and I will go head-to-head in the Star-News Pick’em. Here is this week’s predictions along with how we did last week.

Last Week: Ramirez (13-4); Lair (13-4)
Season: Ramirez (58-25); Lair (58-25)

Last week: Another even battle. I correctly predicted South El Monte beating Maranatha and Bosco Tech defeating Verbum Dei. Keith got me back with Arcadia’s surprising win over Burroughs in the Pacific League and Eagle Rock beating La Canada
This Week: Big game week has arrived, with the area’s top two teams ready to tee it up when back-to-back CIF-SS Mid-Valley champion Monrovia calls on St. Francis, the area’s traditional power. Who wins? I like the Golden Knights in a close one. Also on tap this week is a key Montview League game between Duarte and Azusa. I like the visiting Aztecs, who are still the Montview League champs until someone takes it away from them.

    I think Monrovia will win.

I hope LC can start playing better. This season may be a “pass” for the new coaching staff, but it would be nice to see a good effort against a still-tough Arroyo team.

I truly think if Monrovia cut down on the fumbling and shooting themselves in the foot with the blown coverages in the secondary they should take care of a very discipline St. Francis team. This match up is Talent against Discipline coach against coach, the coach’s will basically have to display who knows more football. Monrovia has the talent no doubt but St. Francis has the discipline so i think it comes down to a classic match up talent against discipline just like the oaks christian-crenshaw game who can out coach who.

This will be a fun game for me to watch. I live in Monrovia but my son attends SF. I coached many of the MHS players at MYBL, Arcadia Indians, and Arcadia PonyAll great kids and very talented! Game could go either way but I think SF finds a way to win it. Good luck Wildcats and see you out at Friedman Field Friday evening.

Knights win in a close one in a packed home stadium. SF coaching staff puts the team over the top. Heyworth has a ton to prove to his ex-teammates but it won’t be enough. SF passing game proves too much for the Wildcats. Game may come down to special teams and mistakes. I’ll take coaching/discipline in close HS home games.

  • La Mirada guy

I have not seen Monrovia play, But i did see St Francis play La Mirada tough. Good disciplined team, very good Qb and tough Defense. Golden Knights by 10 if not more.

    My 2cents:
In order for Monrovia to pull of a win in La Canada at St. Francis it will have to be a complete cumulative effort on the coaching staff to find a first half solution to get all of the players on the team to relax and play their style of football. Monrovia certainly has the talent to have a great first half run and then kick it into second gear in the second half. The defense needs to step its game up a notch and play lights out in the secondary. I think that Monrovia’s offense will com alive in a game of this magnitude and all eyes will be watching as Heyworth shows his skills to the team that bought in a player from the East coast to fill his shoes. Ainsworth and Jones and going to have to light up the scoreboard and allow Heyworth those options of passing to his 2 great receivers. If Monrovia plays a great first half and is up they will win it going away, If they stall in the first half and dont answer St. Francis attack, It could be a long night. But I have faith that the Cats can pull this one out.

  • THE DIFFERENCE

The difference in this game will be St Francis’ diciplne as opposed to Monrovia’s lack of it . Team full of individuals who just can’t seem to play like a team so far.Don’t think they’ll get it right until they face that tough Rio Hondo league schedule . St Francis by 10 or more .
