Thursday Night Final: Schurr overwhelms Keppel

MONTEBELLO – Schurr High School turned in a dominating performance Thursday, defeating Keppel 55-7 in an Almont League game.
The host Spartans kept their postseason chances alive with the victory, improving 3-6 overall and 2-2 in league.
Eric Perez led the Spartans on offense, rushing for 111 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries.
Schurr quickly took control and took a 34-0 halftime lead.
After forcing an Aztecs three-and-out, the Spartans scored on their possession, which was capped by Perez’s 10-yard scoring run with 7:52 left in the first quarter. Perez set up the score by opening the drive with a 66-yard run that moved the Spartans to Keppel’s 15-yard line.
The Spartans scored on all four of their first-half possessions.
Max Velez increased the Spartans’ lead to 14-0 when he scored on a 1-yard run. Abel Troncoza delivered the big play on the Spartans’ drive with a 47-yard run that put the ball at the Aztecs’ 2.
The Spartans put the game out of reach by outscoring the Aztecs 20-0 in the second quarter.
Spartans quarterback Ricardo Fonseca opened the second quarter with a 5-yard touchdown run.
Fonseca then used his arm to give the Spartans a 27-0 lead as the threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Handy.
Schurr made it 34-0 when when Danny Moriel returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown.
Perez ran for 86 yards in the first half.
The Spartans kept the momentum going in the third quarter, scoring on their first possession in the second half, capped by Perez’s 13-yard run.
The Aztecs (0-9, 0-4) got their only score on Alex Ramirez’s 5-yard touchdown run. Ramirez’s score capped a eight-play, 80-yard drive that ended with 5:25 remaining in the third quarter.
