CIF-SS Mid-Valley Divsion Preview: 3-Peat for the Cats? You bet! Green to reign surpreme

3PEAT?. You can expect Monrovia to 3-peat in the Mid-Valley Division.
Staff photo by Keith Birmingham

This won’t go well in the desert area of Lancaster, but I see a 3-peat for Monrovia, which is on a quest to match those legendary Temple City teams of the 1970s. I like the way the Wildcats are playing and remember, there only losses are to two teams — South Hills and Ayala — who would likely win this division. I see Monrovia leaving Sierra Canyon and Paraclete in its wake en route to a three-peat and CIF State Region Bowl title.

Awesome Steve, AWESOME! You the man…
“You Don’t Want No Green And White”

  • Greenie

Steve you might be on to something with the Northview Sierra Canyon game….I watch a lot of Sierra Canyon this season..there could be something to that. I won’t flat out call it..but IDK.

    • Desert Rat

Really…tell me what they’re all about?

      • New York

        What
is Sierra Canyon about? Big plays. Spreadout stacked receivers, big
plays. What is Paraclete about? The same thing they always are.
Finishing the run, finishing the run, finishing the run. lol. Paraclete
racked up 400 yards of offense against SC and threw the ball around just
10 times. They might seem unproductive in the first quarter, but that
is because they are wearing you down. Terrific pad level and tenacity.
Oh yeah and Paraclete’s defense flies around and lays the hat. They
scrimmage Muir earlier in the year. How’d that go?

Monrovia’s strength this year has been our defense. Held Ayala to 16
points. Really held South Hills to a couple scores (discounting the
amazing field position our offense gave them). Our “area for
improvement” has been our offense. And believe me, that has been a very
target rich environment with very low hanging fruit. It’s like that
saying of “I might be fat, but you are ugly, and I can lose weight.”

I think Paraclete, by the nature of their consistent system, has
reached its best level of play…and that level is very good. Monrovia
has still not played our best game. I believe our best game will come
once we remember that our playoff run last year went through Marquise
Bias grinding out yards and opening the field for play-action passes to
guys like Frazier, Williams, Bryant, Craft, etc. Even Peyton Manning
realizes the value of checking to RUN plays and taking advantage of the
defense. We have the tools to run through this division, one game at a
time. We just need to make things easier on ourselves.

I like the way monrovia is playing right now. But Im not quite ready to crown them the dynasty just yet. I want to see what Sierra Canyon does, and Paraclete. Ive seen highlights of SC…take it for what it is, they blewout teams inferior to their overall talent seems like. And Paraclete beat SC. But it would be sweeeeeeettt for monrovia to knock off SC and Paraclete to win it all, and then hopefully go to a state bowl. Cant wait for the playoffs to start!!
hey steve good luck on the northview upset first round haha

  • Jefe

Northview is not getting to the semis.

    • GrimReaper

Yep all HOPE and no change (especially if Steve is a betting man)

  • GrimReaper

Steve has a busted bracket due to thinking with his heart and not his head. We all know Northview is a 15 seed and that is just the hangover from the election of Hope but no change. but if Steve wants to put his money where his mouth is, I will take Sierra Canyon and maybe give him a couple of point too. Call me.

But if you notice the upset he forgot to mention.

Arroyo over BG.. That I agree with… the spoiler alert!

But the game of the week is

So El Monte V Covina.. Rain is possible but at 30% and it is going to be light and intermittent if at all. So the pass is still going to work. and in fact a little wetness might be an advantage to receiver routes as defenders may not be able to react and cut as well to recover, giving receivers additional advantage where the field is wet but there is no current rain.

    • http://www.facebook.com/philip.b.blackwell Phil Blackwell

Yeah I dont see Northview upsetting Sierra Canyon. But they may keep it close in the first half, that’s all Im giving the vikings. I dont see any real upsets in the first round. So el monte should win against covina, and I think BG’s defense is good enough to beat Arroyo

      • GrimReaper

But it appears clear that the games of the week are either Arroyo BG

or what I would consider to be the most entertaining game for the fan not wishing to watch a first round blow out, is the SEM V Covina game should provide the best entertainment.

Mainly I recommend it as SEM has a wide open passing offense should provide offensive fun, if not a close enough score to keep things interesting into the fourth quarter.

      • GrimReaper

But given you alligence to all things Green and White, I would suppose you will be in Monrovia tonight for a blow out 2 V 15 seed game that will be over early,, or maybe even a running clock.

        • http://www.facebook.com/philip.b.blackwell Phil Blackwell

Nah, I expect monrovia to win that game, but I am curious about the 2nd round match up against South El Monte…So weird saying that but I am.

  • GrimReaper

    Hey Desert Rat…

Steve just set it up and lobbed it in for you to make a statement about Paraclete and or Sierra Canyon.

Over enthusiasm abounds where Green and White are concerned.

The Monrovia Fans are convinced of a Three Peat and are making party plans right now. But besides a walk over in the first round there will be some hell to pay to get there. Given the couple of MoTown games I saw, there are continuing problems that MoTown has in relation to mental breakdowns both on the field and coaching that could end the dreams of three peat.

Further I do not know the status of #58 DL that went down to a knee in the SM game. When he exited the DL line was noticeably weaker,

Given MoTowns stand out safety and workable corners, I would venture a guess that establishing the run and just the right amount of passing would be the key to any team wishing to defeat them. Sierra Canyon’s stats would look to meet that offensive balance. But with only 1.5 sacks per game Sierra may not be able to set enough pressure on Heyworth and thus there may be too much pressure on the SC corners and safety. Heyworth with a good night might be the difference. But expect this Monrovia defense to give up points and thus rely on the offense to bail them out.

    • Me

I am a Monrovia fan and I am not “convinced” of a 3-peat nor am I making any party plans. You assume too much Grim. Of course, I was sure they wouldn’t go back to back last either so you never know. Best of luck to the Cats. What a thrill it would be for the seniors to win it all. It’ll be doubly hard if they don’t as I am sure they will feel that they some how let Monrovia down.

      • New York

        Me,
You were sure they would not last year or you were not sure that they would? There’s a big difference.

        Grim,
You have been calling for Monrovia’s demise on a weekly basis for the past two years. If it ever happens, don’t set yourself up by trying to claim that you told us so. You are correct, though, this year’s bracket is tougher than last year’s. Although, last year Covina was hyped up quite a bit for good reason. We made short work of them on their home field.

        • GrimReaper

weekly basis? I dont think so. And if it is penalties and mental breakdowns, maybe I will tell you I said so, as this seems to be a systemic problem that has been going on for years.

And I fully agree if MoTown plays up to their abilities we may see such dominations like, not so much Covina which was a game for a while, but the Whittier Christian demolition. That was over in the first quarter.

It may surprise you that I am not wedded to any single team so much in the RHL. I have gone to MoTown games (as well as other RHL games) when they strike my fancy and show the potential to be a good game.

I have coached kids from SP, SM, LC, Alhambra, LA, SG, Pasadena, over many years. So I truly believe rivalries are are over rated stuff for newspapers and old men. I will say I like to root for an underdog to give the big dog a good game or win. Thus it is easy to root for the MoTown opponent given the run MoTown is on.

Who knows maybe a few years from now I will be rooting for an underdog MoTown team. Things change… sometimes faster than one might hope.

That said it is so easy to get a rise out the the green and white faithful. Good for you and the others for being such devoted fans. So I will see you or one of the other cat posters when I say even the most mild of critical M posts.

My post was designed to get the Rat to post a Sierra Canyon post, about their team to ratchet up the coming game. Seems like my bait got not a rat but a cat.

          Thanks.

          • New York

            fair enough.

        • Me

I was sure they would not. I was happy to be proven wrong.

          • New York

            Very noble admission.

  • http://www.facebook.com/philip.b.blackwell Phil Blackwell

    GrimReaper-
Not So fast my friend. Monrovia’s defense has been pretty good. And our depth year in and year out has been pretty deep. So Im sure if #58 cant go someone will step in. And our linebacker core is solid. No monrovia fans are making party plans of a 3-peat. Dont make our fanbase out to be so overconfident. We know there are much more competitive teams in this years playoffs then the past two years. San Dimas or Paraclete, and Sierra Canyon will be tough match ups. I think both sides of the ball monrovia will be ready to face any team in the playoffs with a full head of steam. Ainsworth as the workhorse and Heyworth picking apart any secondary. And our defense playing lights out. Time will tell if all those mental errors have been corrected as we have a dress rehearsal tonight before the real playoffs actually start

    Bring on South El Monte!

  • Spirit in the sky

Paraclete beat muir 35-14 in the scrimmage only gave up one offensive score.

  • http://www.facebook.com/philip.b.blackwell Phil Blackwell

Hmmmm, they couldnt put up 35 on muir right now, that’s for damn sure!

  • SGV Football Fan

I have seen Monrovia, Paraclete and San Marino play.
The only team that can stop Monrovia from winning their 3rd Championship is Monrovia.

    • New York

      Agreed.
