The hoopla of national signing day has come and gone, but high school athletes are still signing national letters of intent.
Maranatha quarterback Andrew Elffers took pen to paper on Friday afternoon in a ceremony in the gymnasium. He signed with NCAA Division II Azusa Pacific.
“I know I have a great chance to play at APU for a long time,” he said. “It’s so exciting.”
Elffers, who tore his meniscus this past season, waited until Friday to sign because his father was out of town.
He turned down offers from Division I schools, including UNLV, Idaho and Sacramento State.
“Of all the schools that I went to that made me offers, APU stepped out the most,” he said. “I could tell there was something different there.”
The west San Gabriel Valley, already a girls soccer hot bed, had three other girls make commitments: Pasadena Poly’s Katie Wardlaw and Julia Blanco and Westridge’s Allie Schiffman.
Wardlaw, who turned down Division I offers, will play for Division III Williams. Blanco will play at Division III Claremont and Schiffman at Washington University in St. Louis. La Salle’s Cassidy Rey will be at Division I Denver.
The signing period for softball and swimming began last November, but athletes are still signing letters. La Salle catcher Stefanie Ferri chose Fordham, Alhambra pitcher Tori Simpler picked Indiana Tech and Flintridge Sacred Heart softball player Jill Jacobs chose Loyola Marymount. Pasadena swimmer Victoria Lepesant signed with Princeton.
