Muir rolls past Heritage Christian in first round … La Verne Lutheran up next on Friday …

Muir High School’s boys basketball team left nothing to chance at the start of Wednesday’s CIF-Southern Section Division 4AA playoff game against visiting Heritage Christian.

The Mustangs jumped all over the Warriors early and to the tune of seven different Muir players scoring in the first. When the quarter was over, Muir was comfortably ahead and never looked back for a 89-64 win.

“I’m happy with the start,” Mustangs coach Simaine Stewart said. “The middle of the game, no. In the middle of the game I think we kind of got back on our heels and got complacent.”

Who could blame the Mustangs for getting complacent? Muir flirted with a 20-point lead so early in the game that the only drama left came when Heritage Christian made mild runs that the Mustangs answered with defense, which lead to turnovers, which lead to easy transition baskets.

“They know, one and done,” Stewart said of his team. “And for my seniors, they want to continue to play. We talk about getting deep into the playoffs and getting our opportunity, because the deeper you get, you don’t know what that ball will do.”

Muir improved to 17-12 and will play on the road against La Verne Lutheran on Friday night. Heritage Christian finished 11-15.
